July 2016 - The Club at Sonterra
Page 2 Council Corner / Catering Message From the Board- Message from the General Manager Ron Botello, Board Chairman Bryant Early First it was the rain, it seemed like it would never stop. Then it was the heat and humidity that was difficult to bare. Here’s hoping that July will bring us a little less of both. The Sunday Father’s Day brunch was well attended continues to be a favorite event. July is a very active month for your club. Our Fourth of July celebration is one of the best in the city, with great fun, camaraderie and an awesome fireworks display. This event is enjoyed by our members, their guests and a couple of hundred locals that park along 1604 and adjacent business’ to enjoy the show. If you’ve attended before, come again; if you haven’t attended you are missing out and should make it a point to be here. Our Director of Golf, Bobby Haby had his one month anniversary and is making positive changes to the golf cart process by hiring a manager to oversee that operation and implementing a maintenance process to keep them in tip top shape. The men’s card room is nearing completion, with the current wall removed to increase the space and eliminate the congestion that has been an issue for some time. Utilizing new technology we’ve purchased devices for some of our areas that are on the tables with one button that will call a server and another that when pushed will inform him/her that you are ready for your bill. The servers are wearing watches that light up when you press the buttons and informs them of what action to take and also what table is making the request. Enjoy a safe and fun 4th of July and take advantage of all your club has to offer. It’s hard to believe we have crossed mid-year already! As we head deeper into the summer, it’s no surprise that club activity has increased. Camps, Tennis, Swimming, Food & Beverage and of course Golf have all seen an increase in member utilization. As a result of this, it’s important that we tighten up on our security efforts. You may have noticed that we have now started utilizing our Guest access gate for all Non-Members entering our property. Despite having to repair the gate arm on several occasions, it looks as though this measure has helped with much of our typical juvenile vandalism during this time of year. I want to give a special shout out to coach John Ryan, all of the assistant coaches and of course our awesome Sonterra Stingray swim team. What a fantastic season, congratulations to you all!!! GREAT news! I’m glad to say that work will begin on the tennis courts the first week of August. This much needed work includes resurfacing 6 hard surfaced courts as well as addressing the tree roots causing additional damage to several courts. Please contact Michelle for more information on the court closures. It’s our hope to move through this process fairly quickly as I know our tennis program is one of the largest, if not the largest in San Antonio. Finally, I’m eager to announce that the staff here at Sonterra will be putting together a Member event in August geared towards giving back to our community. This Gala will be open to all Members and their guests with hopes of raising money that will benefit several local charities. If you are interested in helping, please contact our Member Relations Direc- tor, Debbie Gonzaba at [email protected]. Page 10 Tennis Corner Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis Tennis Events/News We are at the half way mark of summer and our summer activities and your staff is focused on preparing for the busy fall schedule of events. One nice change for USTA players is that the mid-year ratings have gone away—can we all say “YEA”? Captains and players can rest easy and not worry about changing teams or finding teams due to a ratings change. Now before we scratch off summer let’s not forget all those promises we made that we would accomplish before fall—ball machine, improved strokes, getting in shape for those long matches, working on your serve and playing singles even though you’re not a singles player. Play singles—it will improve your game in so many areas and you will see the results in your doubles play—trust me. Club Mixed Doubles Championship August 29th Well- as most of you seasoned league player’s know-team numbers are handed out late July and August. For those new to league play, or new to the club, we have a sign-up sheet available for you in the pro shop so captains that need players can contact you. We have four leagues each season—USTA, SAPTA, Friday SAT and your very own club leagues. So you are quite busy. We have leagues every day of the week here at Sonterra and I’m proud to say that Sonterra does really well when it comes to being in the play-offs, sectionals or going to nationals. We have over 90 teams playing out of Sonterra and many of those teams are captained by the same person, year after year, many times captaining multiple teams. Being captain isn’t easy or popular, but without them there wouldn’t be organized tennis or the opportunity for members to get involved in a team sport that has many rewards. The most important part of league tennis is fun… have fun!! Please contact the pro shop if you need help joining a team, getting a match, finding a clinic to join or just to talk about that super match you just had or the one that got away. We are great listeners. Christy has the catalogs for captains to look at for team uniforms so don’t wait too long as supplies are limited. We have some really cute junior outfits and shoes so take a look at our shop and if we don’t have it –we will make every effort to get it for you. We will be happy to gift wrap for that special event. Enjoy the summer and keep an eye on those emails. We know you get inundated with emails, but we will forward items of interest and deadline reminders. So please read us before you delete us. Registration for this event begins August 8th at 8am. All matches will be played in the evenings. Here is your chance of having your name and picture (oh and parking space) on the winners plaque forever. You are guaranteed two matches. Event begins the week of August 29th. Projects around the tennis area now/future Motion detection lights installed along the sidewalk coming up from court 25 and more to come down the middle sidewalk area Ice machine installed by court 4—we now have ice/water machine –Aah refreshing! Six courts repaired/resurfaced beginning in August New menu in sports grill Painting the surrounding buildings Court Resurfacing Update We will be repairing and resurfacing six courts beginning in August. Courts 6, 7, 8, 9, 24 and 25 are scheduled for some major repair. We not only have a lot of cracks but some structural damage due to a tree root expansion into the court. We will hopefully have all the work completed by the end of August. Fall Adult League Registration ATTENTION MEMBERS—Registration for our fall adult leagues begins August 8 at 8am—only 52 spots available so call early as it fills up very fast. Ladies Beginner & Advanced Beginner Clinics Monday morning 9am to 10:30am and Tuesday/Thursday evening 7-8:30pm Please call pro shop to reserve your spot and begin enjoying the sport that keeps on giving-fun. Team Clinics Don’t forget to start booking your team clinics for the fall before the season starts. Summer is a great time to work on Some of you are returning captains and some of you are new captains- please let all our shots, develop that weapon and develop some us know who you are so we can help you gather members for your team. We partnerships for the fall season. We have eight staff pros have a sheet in the pro shop of members who are looking for a team. Let’s get available to help you, but some juggling is required since every member that’s looking for a team on a Sonterra team. many clinics require FALL CAPTAINS Summer Junior Tennis Camp We have six more weeks of camp left. If your child has not played then these one week camps are perfect. It will give them a taste of the sport and for those who have played then let’s not stop the momentum of their progress.
