Message From the Board-
Message From the Manager–
Ron Botello, Board Chairman
Sergio Salazar, General Manager
As I sit here writing this article in the middle of
February, the high today is supposed to be 81 degrees. Maybe this long winter is finally over. Now
if we could only get some rain, everyone would be
happy. Our Member Mixer for February was well
attended and the weatherman cooperated by giving
us a great day for that event. The painting of the
main clubhouse has begun and will look great as we enter our Spring
season.
Your Board of Governors has been very busy this past month and
some very exciting events are getting ready to take place. Working with
our Ambassadors Council we are kicking off our membership drive the
week of February 24th by asking some of our members to assist us in
contacting potential new members. I want to also reach out to our
entire membership to do the same. I’d like to explain the potential
return on our new member initiative. Century Golf has agreed to make
improvements totaling $1,300,000 if we reach our goal. They also
agreed that they will make staggered improvements based on staggered
levels of new members, and have in fact already begun phase one since
we are all confident we will reach that level. This will begin with the
upgrading of the bathroom facilities in our main clubhouse, both those
by the bar and at the end of the hall. Phase two will be a complete
upgrade of our bar in the main clubhouse and phase three will be expanding the 19th hole to the Ivy Room and a total remodeling of that
area. This is going to be awesome for our current membership and if
you were ever looking for a reason to invite friends to join ---- the reason is here. If any member wants more information please contact
someone on the BOG or the Ambassadors Council, we are excited to
answer any questions you might have.
We are very excited about the opportunity that
could soon be our reality. Last month, Ron Botello and the Board of Governors made an agreement in conjunction with Arnold Palmer Golf
Management that will have a huge impact on the
future of The Club At Sonterra.
Once the club reaches 20 net new golf members, both sets of bathrooms in the main clubhouse will be completely renovated along with
the main lounge. Once the club gains a total of 55 net golf members,
the existing 19th hole and Ivy room will be converted into one large
bar and grill that will also incorporate the patio area. These two upgrades will be a huge improvement to our club, creating a member
destination for adults and the entire family throughout the year.
There will be more information and conceptual drawings available
shortly through email and our website, but please consider sponsoring
a member today. In the past couple of years, improvements have been
made to the golf courses, tennis, and fitness facilities and now with
your help we can make our club something we can all be proud of.
Please consider who you can invite today. Thank you for being a
Member.

Golf News- Jeff Hunter, Director of Golf
As we begin our journey to spring and hot weather
please be advised, ee are fully aware of the condition
of the south course greens. They are getting better
quickly. Donnie has spent hours on the phone and in
person with the inventor of the Emerald Bermuda
grass to find out the source of the weakness. It is as
simple as the cold weather. We have thus instituted a
plan to alter our agronomic practices throughout the
year to make sure this does not happen next winter.
We plan to fertilize, maintain, and aerate differently
than the north and possibly overseed the south greens next fall. The
greens will return to good playing condition once the temperatures rise.
We appreciate your understanding during this unusually cold winter.
Thank you for being a member.
On the Greens–
Donny Latham, Golf Course Superintendent
It’s finally March and the weather seems to be
getting warmer. What a winter we have had. It has
been a long cold winter for San Antonio. With these
warmer temperatures come lots and lots of weeds.
We have been spraying non stop the past couple of
weeks keeping our courses as clean as we can. Our
spring pre-emergent weed control will be going out
the second week of March. You will see me
spreading a granular fertilizer all over the course.
This product will not only get our Bermuda grass the
early season feeding it needs to come out of dormancy but also will prevent Crabgrass and Goosegrass.
The warmer temperatures have caused our MiniVerde greens on the
North course to really come out of its winter dormancy. We will start
our agriculture practices in March with small solid tine aerifications, application of granular organic fertilizers and light topdressing. These MiniVerde greens look and putt great. Our Emerald Bermuda grass on our
South Course has also started to wake up and put on new growth. We
will begin pushing this growth to recover from the winter thinning.
Going forward we will fertilize with a granular product every two weeks
to promote root and shoot growth. We will also foliar feed these greens
weekly with the added nutrients required to push the covering of all thin
areas. I’m looking forward to a great summer! As always, Thank You
For Being A Member!

Landscaping– Gary Tupa, Landscaping Manager
March is here and spring is in the air. Warm days will send people to the nurseries and home improvement stores with the thought of getting
started on all those outdoor lawn projects. It’s still too early for a lot of tasks but the perfect time for others. There will be a ton of oak tree
leaves and blooms to deal with, cool season weeds will be in abundance, and the list goes on. I’ll pass on a few tips to help you out.
March is still too early to plant any tender vegetation such as bedding plants and vegetables. South Texas always has a good chance of getting a
late season freeze or two. And it’s still way too early to fertilize your lawn. Wait until mid-April or May.
But it’s a perfect time to give your lawn that first mowing and the perfect month to top dress. Mowing will
knock down those weeds and denying them growth will certainly help in getting rid of them. If you do top
dress, always purchase quality soil from a reputable company. And if you have any perennials such as lantanas, salvias, now is the time to get them cut back. Around the club we have just about finished up the
new patio between the tennis pro shop and locker rooms. And work has begun on the landscape enhancements and drainage issues around the tennis gazebo. Additionally, we will be working on the landscaping
around the swimming pool and fitness center in anticipation of another pool season. Warmer weather will
bring a lot of outdoor activity to the club and lot of pedestrian traffic. Please maintain a safe driving speed
when entering the club and when driving through the parking lots. Enjoy the sights and sounds of spring
and as always, THANKS FOR BEING A MEMBER!

“MGA Sonterra Points Update”
The MGA Sonterra Cup is a yearlong event. All members of the MGA
compete for “Sonterra Points”. There are a total of 40 players that qualify
for the Sonterra Cup tournament in November. The tournament is set up
in Ryder Cup format and split up between 20 guys each on the RED and
BLUE team. The points are earned by a formula of participation and performance (gross & net, top 20% get points). So the more tournaments you
enter, the better your chances on earning a roster spot for the Sonterra
Cup held November 7th - 9th, 2014. Each MGA member is automatically
entered into the Sonterra Cup by signing up for any tournament
event. The tournaments change in format each month. The MGA hosts
10 tournaments each year. Normal tournament dates are the second weekend each month. There is a mix of one day and two day tournament
events throughout the year. As of our last February tournament, the top

Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis
Hello March, hopefully you will be nicer to us than the
previous three months- brutal to the sports enthusiasts.
Somehow we got through February only partially
scathed with tons of makeup USTA matches, but we
were lucky to get in our two major tournaments (check
out the winner's circle). Besides all the league matches
that are ongoing, March has some added events Sneakers and Cleats, Ronald McDonald Mixer, Spring
Break Adult and Junior Clinics, Member Monthly Mixer
Tennis Exhibition and Daylight Saving Time begins.
Our Valentine's Day Mixer was a huge success with a
break in the bad weather and an eager group to play a
little tennis before the next batch of cold weather hit us.
We had three great poems vying for the honor of best
poem and the winning poem is featured in this newsletter. It was very hard to choose the winner and the ladies that composed the poems were very clever in their message and delivery. Thanks to all who played.
When you think of our Club's landscaping you think of Gary Tupa and his crew
of three. How does he get it done? He has the daunting task of getting this whole
facility transformed into the beautiful botanical gardens that we see as we drive in
and we appreciate and enjoy all the detailed work he displays throughout the facility. Give him and his crew a thumbs up when you see them.
Prepare yourself for a very active next three months. It is even more important
than ever that you open those emails from us because of the many activities we
have coming up. Buckle up!

Sonterra Valentine Poem 2014
by: Chantal Smith
To my friends at Sonterra
You are all so diverse
I’ve gotten to know you
For better or worse
It’s alarming how often
I think of Scott Works
Our time on the court
Does have its perks
Mike Thatcher, the head pro
He’s tried and he’s true
Though he’s been flirting with me
But I just won’t pursue
There’s a lady that lives here
She deserves a bouquet
She’s got a Beautiful Heart
She’s Michelle Dodier
Ben Brown is my partner
Yes, he came to play
Hope there’s NO Love on our court
Or we’ll have to pay
This poem was written
because we all love to win
But truly,
The Love of My Life
Is my husband, Jim

GET HEART HEALTHY
Exercise at least 20 minutes a day: Just 2.5 hours
of exercise a week, or a little more than 20 minutes a
day, can reduce the risk of heart attack by one third.
Just take a brisk walk in the morning, evening or during your lunch break.
Use ground turkey instead of beef: Red meat contains a ton of both
saturated fat and cholesterol. Ground turkey has half the fat of lean ground
beef and can be used in virtually every recipe calling for ground beef.
Say hello to olive oil: Olive oil is a great dip for your bread and is full of
heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, which promote heart and circulation
health.
Embrace the 3 F’s: Fiber, fish, and flaxseed. All three have been shown to
help reduce heart disease – often dramatically. Stock up on vitamin D: It has
been shown to help strengthen healthy and even damaged hearts.
Switch to low or nonfat dairy: Every bit of saturated-fat reduction helps
when it comes to taking better care or your heart. Besides reducing your fat
intake, you’re reducing your calorie intake too. Stretch every day: A recent
study showed that those who stretched for 10 minutes every day had not
only more limber muscles, but also more supple arteries.
Sleep it off: It turns out that rest is just as important as activity, in
maintaining a healthy heart. Recent studies show that people who get
adequate sleep have up to 33 percent fewer heart-related health issues.
