May 2016 - The Club at Sonterra
Page 2 Council Corner Message From the Board- Message from the General Manager Ron Botello, Board Chairman Bryant Early Fiesta has come and gone and we again hosted The Taste of the Northside, which has become one of the premier events of the Fiesta week. Open to the city, there were approximately 8,000 attendees and a great time was had by all, with the weather cooperating and our club receiving praise again for being an excellent host. With the Sonterra staff being released at noon due to the Taste of the Northside event, the Board of Governors sponsored a luncheon for the entire staff as they departed. Led by Gordon Hudson a food truck was available at the tennis center, with burgers, fries and shakes enjoyed by all. Yes, I had one too, it was great. This was our small way of thanking the staff for their hard work to make the club more enjoyable for the members. The Sonterra Easter event was awesome and enjoyed by family and friends, with the Easter Bunny making his annual appearance. Luckily rain did not affect our events, but the rain we did receive was very welcomed; however our courses are still recovering from debris and damage to our bunkers. Donny and his staff are working hard to make needed repairs. With the courses in good shape, new carts arriving this week, activities galore and great weather just around the corner, it looks like the beginning of a great time for our members. By the way gentlemen and children please don’t forget Mother’s day on May 8th. Bring Mom out to the club to celebrate all she does for you. Thank you all for being a member. Ron Botello, Board Chairman It’s been a busy month as our Board Chairman, Ron Botello eluded. I’m glad to say May will be no different. We welcomed 22 New Member Families to Sonterra with more expected this month. I am also very happy to report that our selection committee unanimously voted on our next Director of Golf. Bobby Haby, currently at TPC, has eagerly accepted the role and is ready to fill the void here at Sonterra. Bobby’s official start date is May 12th but I wouldn’t be surprised if we see him around the club prior to that date in an effort to get a head start meeting all of you. Prior to Bobby starting, I will send out a Bio of him and the other new members of the golf staff as well as an invite for a meet and greet. This will be a great way for you to get a chance to learn a little more about Bobby and the other new members of the staff. I’m also very excited about our new cart fleet arriving the 2 nd, 3rd and 4th of this month. This will most certainly be a welcome addition to the club. Bobby, his Assistant Pros and Outside Service Managers, Gary, Brett and our cart mechanic have already starting putting together a comprehensive game plan to maintain our fleet to the highest standards. Finally, the changes to the Men’s card room has begun.! In addition to a paint job, we will be expanding the space by pushing back the north wall. We also plan to add 4 additional TV’s, a new kegerator as well as a fully stocked bar. These changes will most definitely enhance not just the space but the experience. Until next time, Bryant Early General Manager The Ambassador Committee Taste of Northside 4:30pm Thank you so much to Ron Botello, Chairman of the Board, Rita Parscale, John De Loach, Gordon Hudson, and Milt King for contributing to serve the Sonterra Staff Lunch! Every year, on the day of the “Taste of The Northside”, these Members solicit donations from their fellow members so they can feed the staff. We really appreciate everyone who contributed and we appreciate your support of the Club! A BIG HELLO to all long standing and new members to the Club at Sonterra! After meeting and socializing with the GREATEST people in town, it did not take much convincing to get my sweet husband to join my 11 year membership to THE MOST SPECTACULAR CLUB IN SAN ANTONIO. We have purposely chosen Sonterra as "Our Home" because it has ALWAYS been a happy environment in which we have shared unique events such as July 4th and Summer pool parties with our family and friends. Not to mention the special people we have met with whom those relationships could never be replaced and will last a lifetime. Finally, we had to mention the hard working staff who goes the extra mile to make everyone feel right at home. It takes a special heart to serve others and your contribution is the foundation of this club. As Ambassadors to Sonterra, please let Big Al and myself know if there is ANYTHING we can do to help share the opportunities this club has to offer! MGA Tournament Handicapping Just a reminder – The MGA has adopted a new tournament handicapping system for 2016. For events where individual scores are posted (there are 5 such events in 2016), a player’s handicap will be based on his MGA tournament performance. Only events where an individual score can be posted will count toward a player’s MGA handicap – thus, no shamble, scramble or other event based on team performance will be used. To ensure accuracy and the maximum possible fairness to all, a score must be posted for each hole in a tournament counting toward an individual’s handicap. Failure to post will result in a score of “par” for the hole involved. Golf Corner Page 7 April Tournament Results The fourth tournament of the season was the Individual Play competition, which was held on April 9th. There was an excellent turnout for this flighted event, with one-third of the competitors earning a cash award. Tim Roberts has asked me to compose a memo clarifying our plans for the next several weeks. The schedule published in the team handbook is incorrect. Our coaching staff is comprised of college students, most of whom are taking final exams during the first two weeks of May. Therefore, we will begin Stingray practices on MONDAY, MAY 16. Swimmers will be assigned to practice groups in advance of that date. Late-comers will be assimilated as they appear on the scene. To do this, we'll need for our parents to bring their swimmers to the Sonterra pool during the week of May 2-3-4-5-6-7 for a tryout/evaluation. Swimmers will be evaluated so that we can make an educated guess as to which group is the correct one for them. Adjustments will be made as we move forward. The speed of the golf swing can take us out of balance if we are not stable. Muscular Endurance is very important for golfers. It gives golfers the ability to perform at a high level for a sustained period of time, such as in a round, tournament, season career, or lifetime. Muscular Strength Yoga poses require a high level of muscular strength. Many yoga poses utilize the weight of the body against gravity to exert force. This produces higher levels of muscular strength. Golfers need above average amounts of muscular strength to achieve a powerful golf swing. Balance is the ability to sustain our center of gravity when external forces are placed upon it. In sports, an opponent could throw you out of balance. In golf, the wind or an awkward, uneven lie can significantly challenge balance. Balance is also our ability to maintain grounding energy and our center of gravity while moving Functional / Flexibility/Mobility is the ability to move muscles and joints at different angles and ranges of motion (ROM) specific to the task or athletic movement at hand. In this instance, the athletic movement is the golf swing. Flexibility refers to the tensile elasticity of the muscles, mobility to the ROM at the joint sites. Yoga poses provide a vast array of shapes that both strengthen and stretch the body at many different angles in all ranges of motion. Cardiovascular Endurance is the ability to sustain an increased level of aerobic exertion over an extended time frame. Any form of exercise has some effect on this. Yoga works directly on this because deep breathing is the primary focus of the yoga presented in this book. Yoga poses require sustained, powerful levels of isometric muscular contractions. When this is merged with deep and full yogic breathing, it increases the ability to utilize and access more lung tissue, which increases lung capacity. Yoga Classes Offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am in Main Ballroom Call Maria Luce for more details 210.347.1192 Page 10 Tennis Corner Tennis News- Michelle Dodier, Director of Tennis What a fantastic first four months. Ball Machine Club What is summer good for? Well I’m sure you can answer that with many ways, but one way for sure is the ball machine. We are happy to see so many members taking advantage of what the teaching staff already know-and that is the benefits of working out on the ball machine. Make plans with your pro to work on changing that grip or swing. Maybe you would like to hit a harder pace ball or develop that weapon you’ve longed to hit. Learn with your pro this summer. They say it takes 10,000 balls to get a shot down—what number are you on?
