I work with five schools - covering all primary and secondary key stages, including A level students. My teaching subjects are English and Theatre Arts. I have always believed that the theatre is an essential extension to studies in the classroom - bringing texts to life helps pupils understand the content and context of what they read: looking at the interpretations of character by actors and directors generates great discussions in the classroom. The experience of theatre and live performance is magical - I never tire of seeing little eyes wide open with delight! What’s the first message that you want to convey to your groups when taking them to the theatre? The main message is simply to soak up the performance and enjoy, followed by how useful a performance will be in helping them understand what they are studying, but the first message is that live performances in the theatre need an audience to be quiet - no phones, no rustles and no chit chat! Those messages are all part of the education process. What’s your favourite show, and why? Two Cats workshop options are available: H A Musical Theatre masterclass centred on the unique style of this famous production, this workshop teaches all-round musical theatre technique featuring choreography inspired by the show. H A Devising Theatre masterclass using TS Elliot’s poems as a foundation to create original, movement-based performance in this creative, drama-based workshop. The Matilda The Musical workshop covers all the bases from Storytelling and drama games to Devising and Musical Theatre. It is ideal for groups of all ages as a creative and entertaining workshop experience. Each workshop explores the show’s central themes and characters through performance exercises and has plenty to offer any group. When introducing secondary school pupils to the theatre for the first time, I have always favoured BLOOD BROTHERS - it’s got everything - comedy, tragedy, great music and brilliant characterisation. The other winners I use to capture their interest are obvious shows like MAMMA MIA! - upbeat and fun - MEMPHIS is also great and has terrific social issues for discussion. What will the students and teachers do when back in the classroom after your trip to the theatre? Depends on the show - if it’s a production of something that’s a set text, then obviously they will use their experience to demonstrate their understanding and use what they saw to boost their confidence in exam questions. There are loads of activities that can follow a visit - designing programmes, writing reviews, ‘hot seating’ character or writers, set and costume design, trying to direct scenes for themselves and for older students, looking at specific techniques like comic timing, for example, which they can then try to develop for themselves. How do you find the booking experience with the Encore Education team? Booking through Encore is great - best prices, good advice and prompt service - you can always feel confident that your group will be well served. What’s your advice for teachers who haven’t done a theatre experience yet? Do it - you won’t regret it - the kids will have a fantastic experience and will see something other than a TV or computer screen! Once you’ve had one theatre experience, I guarantee it won’t be your last! Talk to an expert today! [email protected] Terms and rates: Subject to availability. Exclusion dates may apply.
