Wicked
Is the Wicked Witch of the
West really wicked?
Is Glinda The Good truly
good?
And what if The Wonderful
Wizard of Oz really isn’t so
wonderful after all?
Bring your classroom to life with this award-winning musical,
packed with thrilling technical wizardry, dazzling costumes and
show-stopping songs. Exploring themes of friendship, trust and
tolerance, and how it feels to be the victim of bullying simply
because you are different, WICKED is especially appropriate for
Key Stages 2-4. The stories and characters first created in 1900
by L. Frank Baum in ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ are ingeniously
reimagined in this extraordinary musical.
Competition
Please see page 10 for further details about the show.
Please email [email protected] with your answers to the

Christmas
treat!
Ignite your pupil’s Christmas
spirit with Elf the Musical!
Based on the well-loved 2003 film of the same name
starring Will Ferrell, this festive musical follows the
adventures of Buddy the Elf as he travels from the North
Pole to New York City to find his real father.
This brand new musical adaptation
brings the film to life live on stage,
direct from two sell out seasons on
Broadway, and a UK première in
Plymouth last Christmas.
A seasonal treat for your school
groups, ELF THE MUSICAL features
music and lyrics by Tony Award
nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad
Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with
book by Bob Martin and Tony Award
winner Thomas Meehan (Annie, The
Producers, Hairspray).
This
spectacular
production
features stunning sets, costumes
and choreography and has already
delighted audiences across the
world. The original Broadway
production broke box-office records
at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre three
times, and proved so successful it
returned for a second festive season
in the 2012/13 holiday season. The
London production will feature brand
new direction and choreography
by Morgan Young, and star Girls
Aloud’s Kimberley Walsh!

The Phantom of the Opera
is simply unforgettable
C&CF_Encore_charlie_moon_125x95mm.indd 1
Now in its 29th record-breaking year, THE PHANTOM
OF THE OPERA continues to captivate audiences at Her
Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End. Seen by over 100
million people worldwide it is the highest grossing musical
of all time and remains incredibly popular with both school
and college groups.
Far beneath the majesty and
splendour of the Paris Opera House,
hides the Phantom in a shadowy
existence. Shamed by his physical
appearance and feared by all,
the love he holds for his beautiful
protégée Christine Daaé is so strong
that even her heart cannot resist.
These workshops are a fantastic
opportunity to delve deeper into
the show and explore the acting
techniques and use of mask, art and
the power of music.
Andrew
Lloyd

Bend It Like Beckham has
kicked off to rave reviews!
BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM THE MUSICAL is a fantastically
feel-good new modern British musical. A celebratory
fusion of culture, music, emotions and fun, bursting with
warmth, humour and heart.
This brand new musical comedy
had its world première at London’s
Phoenix Theatre earlier this
summer. Based on the 2002 film
of the same name, the musical has
been adapted by the film’s writer
and director Gurinder Chadha,
alongside Paul Mayeda Berges
and features an original score by
Howard Goodall, with lyrics by
Charles Hart.
Following on from the success
of other British film-to-stage
adaptations such as ‘Billy Elliot the
Musical’, BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM
has been carefully developed
for the stage by members of
the original creative team and is
described as a new musical that
“speaks to us of today and of
where we are as a nation.”
Jess needs extra time. She is facing
the most important decision of her
life: live up to family expectations of
university, career and marriage, or
follow in the footsteps of her hero
David Beckham. When the talented
teenager is spotted playing football
in Southall, a world of unexpected
opportunities opens up before
her. But as her sister’s traditional

How theatre in...
my pupils
Jacky Froggatt,
Education Consultant
What type of school groups do you look after, and how
useful is Theatre to their curriculum?
I work with five schools - covering all primary and
secondary key stages, including A level students. My
teaching subjects are English and Theatre Arts. I have
always believed that the theatre is an essential extension
to studies in the classroom - bringing texts to life helps pupils understand
the content and context of what they read: looking at the interpretations
of character by actors and directors generates great discussions in the
classroom. The experience of theatre and live performance is magical - I
never tire of seeing little eyes wide open with delight!
What’s the first message that you want to convey to your groups when
taking them to the theatre?
The main message is simply to soak up the performance and enjoy, followed
by how useful a performance will be in helping them understand what they
are studying, but the first message is that live performances in the theatre
need an audience to be quiet - no phones, no rustles and no chit chat! Those
messages are all part of the education process.
What’s your favourite show, and why?
Two Cats workshop options are
available:
H A Musical Theatre masterclass
centred on the unique style of this
famous production, this workshop
teaches all-round musical theatre
technique featuring choreography
inspired by the show.
H A Devising Theatre masterclass
using TS Elliot’s poems as a
foundation to create original,
movement-based performance
in this creative, drama-based
workshop.
The Matilda The Musical workshop
covers all the bases from Storytelling
and drama games to Devising and
Musical Theatre. It is ideal for groups of
all ages as a creative and entertaining
workshop experience.
Each workshop explores the show’s
central themes and characters through
performance exercises and has plenty
to offer any group.
When introducing secondary school pupils to the theatre for the first time,
I have always favoured BLOOD BROTHERS - it’s got everything - comedy,
tragedy, great music and brilliant characterisation. The other winners I use to
capture their interest are obvious shows like MAMMA MIA! - upbeat and fun
- MEMPHIS is also great and has terrific social issues for discussion.
What will the students and
teachers do when back in the
classroom after your trip to the
theatre?
Depends on the show - if it’s
a production of something
that’s a set text, then
obviously they will use their
experience to demonstrate
their understanding and use
what they saw to boost their
confidence in exam questions. There are loads of activities that can follow a visit - designing programmes,
writing reviews, ‘hot seating’ character or writers, set and costume design,
trying to direct scenes for themselves and for older students, looking at
specific techniques like comic timing, for example, which they can then try to
develop for themselves.
How do you find the booking experience with the Encore Education team?
Booking through Encore is great - best prices, good advice and prompt
service - you can always feel confident that your group will be well served.
What’s your advice for teachers who haven’t done a theatre experience
yet?
Do it - you won’t regret it - the kids will have a fantastic experience and will
see something other than a TV or computer screen! Once you’ve had one
theatre experience, I guarantee it won’t be your last!
