JCCC MOVIE NIGHT : "NAGAI SANPO - A LONG WALK"
Winner of the Grand Prix at Montreal Film Festival
Join us at the JCCC for this tender and powerful 2006 film of love and redemption.
A retired school principal estranged from his grown daughter and still grieving the recent death of
his alcoholic wife finds new meaning in life by protecting a young girl whose careless mother leaves
her open to the repulsively salacious advances of her abusive lover in director Eiji Okuda’s tender road
movie. With his wife gone and his daughter still bitter about his poor parenting skills, recent retiree
Matsutaro Yasuda (Ken Ogata) retreats to a crumbling apartment building in the Japanese countryside.
Upon witnessing the neglect with which his new, loose living neighbor Mayumi (Saki Takaoka) treats
her five year-old daughter Sachi (Hana Sugiura), Matsutaro determines to protect the innocent child at
all costs. When Mayumi’s violent boyfriend Koji (Tomokazu Ohashi) attempts to have his way with the
frightened girl one night, stealthy Matsutaro knocks the pervert unconscious and spirits the young girl
away to safety. Later, as aimless Japanese boy Wataru (Shota Matsuda) joins the pair on their curious
journey, seasoned Detective Iwai (Eiji Okuda) vows to reunite mother and daughter even if it means
bending the rules of standard police procedure.

DISCOVER “HAKKEN” JAPAN PROGRAM UPDATE
What is the Hakken Japan Program?
Hakken, the Japanese word for “discover,” forms the basis of the
Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre’s (JCCC) newest educational
program targeting Canadian school children. In many cases, the
Hakken Japan Program provides the first formal introduction
for participants to learn about Japan and Japanese-Canadian
culture. It presents an important educational opportunity
that provides communities across Southern Ontario with the
means and incentive to experience the culture and heritage
of the Japanese Canadian community. Although Japanese
Canadian history is included in school curriculum, the breadth of
information is limited. The Hakken Japan Program complements
the current school board
curriculum by teaching
children about the art,
culture, and heritage of
Japan, providing new
knowledge and skills
development and giving
children the philosophy
and understanding that
will equip them for the
21st century.
Is the program as success?
The program was launched in 2006 through the support and
generosity of the Ontario Trillium Foundation and has so far
provided training to over 10,000 children from all across the
GTA as well as many other regions. Any visitor to the JCCC has
seen the school buses as they pull in.
We are now working on strategies for delivering the training
off-site and are creating volunteer networks in Simcoe and
Waterloo to help us provide Hakken Japan in those areas.
What is taught?
The program introduces various aspects of Japanese art and
culture such as tea ceremony, Japanese writings, haiku,
story-telling, kimono, toys and games, crafts and origami,
foods, festivals and dance, and the history of Japanese
Canadians and Japanese relations. The education methods
provide for hands-on experience and will be offered in small group
settings allowing for children of all learning abilities to participate
and benefit from this program. Recreational activities such
as karate, aikido, iaido, judo, kendo, naginata, and shorinji
4
kempo promote the importance of health and fitness. These
classes will not only encourage physical well-being but also
spiritual and intellectual well-being.
Are there other benefits?
Another of the goals of this program is to positively impact
economic development, as it enhances current provincial
initiatives by reinforcing existing partnerships and forming new
ones with the Japanese community both at home and abroad.
Represented within the parameters of the JCCC’s geographic
barrier, a radius of 1.5 hours, is $11 billion of Japanese investment
in the Province of Ontario. The program both acknowledges and
reinforces the importance of Japanese investment to our region.
The Hakken Japan Program makes the resources and
lessons of the JCCC available to more of the community as it
seeks to break the barriers of geography, culture and economics.
Currently the JCCC has members throughout Canada with the
greatest percentage in Ontario. Interest in programs and services
stems throughout Ontario but for some it is not easy to travel into
Toronto either for expense or simply because they do not have
the ability to travel far. Because the Hakken Japan Program will
have various satellite sites throughout Ontario and in smaller rural
communities, it will be easier for Ontario members to access the
program in a location closer to them. This easy access will not
only be more convenient for traveling and addressing geographic
concerns but it will also be cost-effective for participants as it
will require a shorter trip and thus less of a burden on travel
expenses. We continue to work on ways to spread this learning
further.
Who is doing all this work?
The program is being delivered by
an active and enthusiastic group
of teachers and volunteers from
with the community including
Haruyo Ota, Kumiko Yamamoto,
Sachiko Suzuki, Joy Sato, Kayo
Tsushima, Hiroko Piggott, Kyoko
Sugita, Kunio Suyama, Yaeko
Yasumura, Saori Fukumoto, Mitsuko Dazai, Aiko Murphy and Mr.
And Mrs. Takakura. For futher information or to book a school
group, please contact 416-298-7657.
JCCC GIFT SHOP NEWS
Ten Ten is a Japanese music
ensemble led by Aki Takahashi on
vocals, shamisen (three-stringed
lute) and sanshin (Okinawan lute).
Together with Kiyoshi Nagata
and Heidi Chan on taiko (drums),
shinobue (folk flute) and shakuhachi
(end-blown flute), the trio performs
original music inspired by Japanese
folk songs known as Minyo.
In the Japanese alphabet, “ten
ten” refers to two dots used to change the sound of a syllable. In the
same spirit, the ensemble strives to create its own unique voice for
Japanese folk music breathing new life into this traditional art form.
The CD is $22 (10% JCCC membership discount applies).
THE BAKUMATSU AND
THE MEIJI RESTORATION
The years between 1850 and
1868 were a turbulent period
in the history of feudal Japan.
After 250 years of oppressive
rule, the Tokugawa Shogunate
fell to the Imperial loyalists led
by the samurai of Satsuma
(Kagoshima),
Choshu
(Yamaguchi) and Tosa (Kochi);
men such as, Sakamoto
Ryoma, Nakaoka Shintaro,
Saigo
Takamori,
Okubo
Toshimichi, Kido Takayoshi, Ito
Hirobumi and many more. This
period of instability is known as
Sakamoto Ryoma
the Bakumatsu Period or the
end of the bakufu. Next year marks the 140 year anniversary of
the Meiji Restoration and the Heritage Committee has a series of
exciting activities planned. For further information, please contact
Ken Noma at: [email protected].

HIROSHIMA DAY COMMEMORATION
The JCCC has taken an active role on the
Toronto Hiroshima Day Coalition. Members
of the JCCC are invited to attend the
annual Hiroshima Day Commemoration
at the Toronto City Hall Peace Garden on
Civic Holiday Monday August 6, 2007 at
6:30pm. Hear Mayor David Miller’s Hiroshima Day Proclamation,
prayers for peace from Toronto’s interfaith community, Mayor
of Hiroshima Tadatoshi Akiba’s Hiroshima Peace Proclamation,
the Yakudo Traditional Drummers, and the Toronto launch of the
International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons. A lantern
ceremony will conclude the event. For further information, contact

KAMP KODOMO SUMMER 2007
With more than 50 returning and new children, the Kamp Kodomo
summer sessions were another huge success in 2007!!! During the
three weeks of operation, children were involved in many different
activities that kept them active, energized and engrossed in the
Japanese culture.
Each session that we ran featured a variety of different activities.
Sessions included the return of many of our favourite workshops,
like cooking with Chef Shoji, Judo, Karate, Kendo, and Ikebana.
The list just goes on. The campers also had the opportunity for
new experiences with workshops in Iaido and Naginata.
The success of Kamp Kodomo Summer 2007 could not have
been possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and patience of
the staff and many volunteers who helped at the camp. Without
their help, Kamp Kodomo would not have been as much fun, nor
run as smoothly as it did! A special thank you to Patty, our head
teacher and Mauria, our ECA student. Another thank you to our
volunteers, Jaime, Guillaume, Cassandra, Daniel and Janice.
Together you help make the campers experience memorable. As
well, many thanks to the dedicated instructors who rearranged
their busy schedules or took time off of work to come and teach
the campers. Your support of Kamp Kodomo and the JCCC is
an inspiration. Thanks to: JCCC Judo, Shito-ryu Itosukai, JCCC
Kendo Club, JCCC Iaido, JCCC Naginata, Ikenobo Ikebana, Shoji
Yano, Association for Japanese Culture and Yakudo.
We hope that everyone will join us for Kamp Kodomo March
Break 2008!
JUDO SENSEI TANGLES WITH OVER 30
COMPETITORS TO EMERGE VICTORIOUS!!!!
The location was Multi III on Friday June 8. Once again the
gathering included new players, regulars and returning players.
Even without some of our returning players, we were amazed to
find a field of 32 eager Euchre players for a second year in a row.
The competition was tougher than ever with the introduction of the
Banzai Bonus! Each time a player scored a 4-point loner, they
would shout out “Banzai!” The last person to score a loner during
regulation play would win a prize.
After nine games of play, Russ Takashima squeaked out a one
point win to take the 2007 title. Not far behind were Barry Akiyama
and newcomer to our tournament Sue Markos, who tied for second
place. Glen Kawaguchi scored the final loner to emerge as the
Banzai Champ. For more information on the remaining players and
their final positions, plan to be at next years Euchre night!!!

KATSURA SANSHI:
A HUGE, HILARIOUS HIT!
The rakugo superstar sold out Kobayashi Hall last month with a
hilarious night of story telling. With great support from performers
Sankin and Sanpo the night sent most guests home with cheeks
aching from 2 hours of constant laughter. We look forward to the
great Sanshi-shisho’s next visit to Toronto!
The JCCC thank the committee and the Toronto Geino Aikokai
for their support.

The peony (botan) is a favourite seasonal marker in summer haiku. The following verse portrays the peony in a romantic, otherworldly fashion:

Of the great garden,
In a part of heaven.

The moon is shining brightly into a room where a beautiful mosquito net is already hung for the night. The nun asleep within,
her shaven head white in the moonlight, a calm, noble face, these things may be imaged, though not seen. The evening, the

NOSTALGIA NIGHT 2007 REVIEW
by Peter Wakayama
Approximately 265 people attended the fourth Nostalgia Night on
Saturday July 7, 2007. This year, the Women’s Auxiliary/JCCC
Auxiliary and the Dance Clubs from the 50s on were recognized.
Twenty panels of photographs and history of both groups were
displayed in the Shokokai Court. In the Kobayashi Hall decorated
by colourful balloons, Peter Wakayama, the M.C., welcomed the
gathering and acted as the interviewer. Marty Kobayashi, the
president of the JCCC, brought greetings and thanked the many
volunteers for their support to the Centre over the years.
Following a video of the
Women’s Auxiliary/JCCC Auxiliary,
WA panelists Pat Adachi and Dawna
Kobayashi told their stories and
viewpoints of their experience during
the early years and the current
situation of the Women’s Auxiliary/
JCCC Auxiliary. A video of the various WA panelists Pat Adachi and Dawna

former members. The panelists were
George Fujimoto, the dance instructor for the Kisaragi Club for 37
years, Frank Shimada of various clubs, Shig Suyama and Ken
Kato, former Sunday Niters. They provided nostalgic and funny
stories about their activities with the dance clubs.
A fabulous Japanese Canadian cuisine buffet with over a
dozen different dishes was enjoyed by the large crowd. After dinner,
Mitsuko Okui lead the dancing crowd to a series of line dances.
With Kay Fujiwara the M.C. and Jim Ura providing the music, the
dancing enthusiasts were able to dance to the big band sounds of
yesterday.
Thanks to the members of the Nostalgia Night committee and
the various volunteers, Nostalgia Night 2007 was a large success.
The guests were able to meet old friends and reminisce about
the old days. Special thanks to Theresa Sano and Linda Oikawa
for coordinating and preparing
the food with all their kitchen
volunteers, Russell Onizuka for the
videos, Jim Ura for the music and
Kay Fujiwara for the decoration
and M.C. of the dance portion.

GENE DINOVI DELIVERS AN UNFORGETTABLE EVENING AND
A “BRAND NEW MORNING” AT THE JCCC
On July 12, the Generations Trio performed to a sold-out audience of 260 in the “Kobayashi Hall Jazz Club". Generations brought together
the tri-generational musical talents of pianist Gene DiNovi, bassist Dave Young and guitarist Andrew Scott for a live concert recording of
jazz standards and DiNovi originals. The evening was enthusiastically received by all including many luminaries for the Canadian jazz
scene. The CD is produced by legendary Japanese jazz producer Mitsuo Johfu for the Japanese label Marshmallow records. Titled “Brand
New Morning”, the CD will be released later this year. Watch the JCCC newsletter and website for information.

JC COMMUNITY PICNIC 2007
A glorious, sunny July 1st day brought hundreds of picnickers together for the 30th anniversary of
the Japanese Canadian Community Picnic (JCCP). Everyone enjoyed the fresh crisp air of beautiful
Caledon Place as friends and family took time out of their busy lives for some rest and relaxation. Kids
of all ages (and adults too!) took part in the games, races, bingo and everyone’s favourite part of the
day - the candy scramble. Many avid fishermen were seeking to land the “big one” but only one, Kyra
Ito, made it happen. Her catch was an incredible 20 1/2 inch large-mouth bass. Certainly a record for
the JCCP and probably one of the biggest fish ever from the Caledon Place pond. The day rounded
out with Fukubiki and Share The Wealth prizes. The JCCP would like to thank all of the volunteers
who organized a very successful event and would like to extend a special thank you to the following
sponsors: Caledon Place, Dundee Wealth Management (Marty Kobayashi), G&G Electronics, Nikka
Times, Sandown Market, Tropic Ice (Glenn Shimoda), and the JCCC. Marty Kobayashi also thanked
honourary chair Mike Shin for 22 years of chairing the JCCP.

The Past, The Present, The Future
A reflection of the accomplishments in the JCCC and what to expect
In 1964, the JCCC first opened its doors to the community
and planted the seed for the future. The location was carefully and deliberately chosen at the time by Raymond and Sachi
Moriyama who worked together over 10 years to determine
the best possible location for the Japanese community within
Toronto.
Thirty years later, the growth of the community has expanded
to the point where more space was needed. In 1996, the purchase of 6 Garamond Court was made and the project taken
by the KPMB Architects helped start to re-define the vision
and the goals of the centre. Open to everyone regardless of
race, religion, sex or age, the JCCC provided a place - and
more importantly, the impetus - for the exchange of ideas; a
showcase for those with Japanese artistic and athletic talents;
social and intellectual events: the history and future of the
unique Japanese-Canadian community. This began to take
shape in a series of steps.
In the initial step of Phase I, we saw the completion of facilities such as the Martial Arts Centre, which holds various
martial art classes from Kendo, Aikido, Judo to lesser known
arts such as Iaido and Naginata. The multi-purpose rooms
constructed also allowed for various programs in the area of
arts and crafts programs such as Shodo, Bunka Shishu, and
Ikebana.
During the course of Phase II, we saw the completion of Kobayashi Hall, which has a style similar to the Roy Thompson
Hall located in downtown Toronto. The Kobayashi Hall is designed to accommodate a wide variety of venues ranging from
business conferences, to weddings and banquets, to festivals
and community events. The Sid Kiyoshi and Marie Ikeda
Tower has been named after Sid and Marie Ikeda in honour
of their continual leadership and support to the centre and its
activities. The Gendai Gallery and The Ijusha Garden have
also been completed during this phase. As well, the additional multi-purposes rooms upstairs have become tenant rental
spaces which are currently being occupied by organizations
such as Japanese Social Services (JSS) and Nikkei Voice.
Through the course of Phase III, we will see the completion of
the Centre as construction on this phase is set to begin in September 2007. One of the primary additions will be an elevator
and stairway constructed near the entrance to provide easier
and additional access to the facilities on the second floor. The
Nikkei Resource Centre will provide a facility where archives
and articles can be stored and viewed by members of the
community, which will preserve the rich history of Japanese
culture and tradition. A Tea Ceremony Room and Garden are
also being designed and possibly implemented within the second floor and outside the centre respectively. An additional
culinary facility located near the Kobayashi Hall will provide
easier access for local and outside catering. The administrative offices and the boardroom will also be renovated to reflect the improvements of the centre. And last but not least,
additional rental spaces and multi-purpose rooms will be added upstairs to encourage further growth and facilitation of the
community and the centre as a whole.
Overall, the Centre has reflected the evolution of the community as programs and facilities have grown and continue to
expand to this day. With the completion of Phase III, we hope
to continue the tradition of preserving the rich history and
culture of Japan while being able to open and share our experiences and knowledge with other culture and communities.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped support the
centre and we encourage all to become more involved in the
future.
For further information about the JCCC Phase III, please contact James Heron, Executive Director at 416-41-2345 ext. 224
or for funding information, please contact Bill Petruck at 416579-0870.

“Beloved Gifts”
The JCCC Community Collection
From album of vintage photosgraphs donated by Norah Brown Irwin.
Beginning in September 2007, the JCCC Heritage Committee will present treasured
artifacts from the Centre collection in the Heritage Lounge display case.
These sparkling displays represent only a small fraction of the Japanese and JapaneseCanadian cultural objects donated to the JCCC. Over the years, the JCCC has received a wide range of gifts. Vintage photo albums of Japan, dolls, Japanobilia for the
export market, ceramic pots, framed brush paintings and calligraphy. These items were
treasured by their owners for reasons of aesthetic beauty, sentimentality, family and
community history, monetary value, cultural linkage. They find their ways to the JCCC
at the bequest of their owners, or because they have lost their homes. Japanese prints
(originals and facsimiles), kimono, furniture, tools, musical instruments. These are symbols of our cultural legacy and the JCCC has both the mandate and the resources to
welcome them. The Heritage Committee glady accepts donations of artifacts and the
JCCC will be pleased to issue tax receipts*. * based on fair market value/independant appraisal

Due to popular demand, we will be holding another ‘Treasures from the Attic’ workshop where you can have your Japanese family heirlooms assessed
by experts. The event is scheduled to take place in October 2007 so please
check the September newsletter for details.
