Director’s Report
An interesting and varied month.
Downtown Branch
At last we are raccoon and flea free. Well, nearly. We continue to treat for the fleas but each week there are fewer and
as of this morning, only one, and it was a real weakling.
Lots of time has gone into getting ready for the bigger,
better Old Town Festival coming up in less than 2 weeks.
Thanks to the Festival event leaders for all their hard work:
Katherine Mathews, Pat Farley, Denny Larkin, Cam Pratt,
Pam Greene, Paul Moore, Melton Henry, Sharon and Norris
Stricker, Suzanna Reeder, Beth and Frank Coletta, and Virginia Moser. This should be the best one yet.
We have decided to re-use our second exhibit, The Jetties,
this fall. It was one of the most popular so far and we will
re-hang it while we complete the research for the next one,
Getting Here.
Scow Schooner
The Schooner has a new keel and is now sheathed with
Dynel cloth and ready to be painted and then turned over.
This will first require a crane and then a big party. Gulf
Coast Cranes, through the generosity of company owner
and Museum patron John Durham, is donating the machine
and operator for this difficult and important step.
Boat wrights Dan Pecore and Amy Vanderlee, assisted
by Cam Pratt, Frank Coletta, Mike Oldani and me, have accomplished a lot this month. Go to the Farley Boat Works
Face Book page for pictures and more information.
It’s been busy at the Boat Works as we prepare for our
second annual boat show on October 16-18. We’ve finished the Family Boat Building kits and are working toward having the schooner ready to be turned over in time
for the show. More than fifty boats were registered two
weeks before the show.
We currently have three boat builds scheduled to start
in November. After the first of the year we will build
three playground pieces for the new Port Aransas Recreation Foundation. The pieces will be built to look like
the Tina, the Franklin Roosevelt Farley Boat and a Port
Aransas skiff. The Foundation and the City will install
them at the Roberts Point Park. We invited the Foundation members to the boat show to promote their efforts
and raise money.
We are pleased to report that two high school students,
Forrest Garlough and Benjamin Hebert, have been volunteering at the Boat Works after school. Several more
students have volunteered for the Boat Show. Thank you
to Rick and Cameron Pratt for making a presentation to
the Marlins in Action community service group.
We had another nice turnout for our September Farley
Boat Works Second Saturday party. It was another good
time with good food and good music. We will not have
a Second Saturday party in October with the Boat Show
being October 16-18.
134 visitors toured the Boat Work in September.
The conversion of the eastern block of boat barns into
an exhibit space is continuing. Architect Charles Milligan
sent us his second take on the conversion and we will now
talk with an engineer about the structural carpentry needed,
and then apply for our building permit from the city.
In very exciting news, Alex McAllister, a graduate of the
Farley Boat Works, donated his intact offshore Farley boat,
the “Starfish”, built in the 1960’s. It was one of the last
built at the shop on Ave C and, when paired with the Tina
in our new exhibit hall, will give us an example of an early
Tarpon Skiff and a late offshore hull; sort of the alpha omega of Farley design. We are researching the past history of
the boat and seeking photos of it in use during its working
life. Plans are to stabilize and paint it, but not restore it to
seaworthy condition at the present.
When we successfully build a copy the last Farley built
flats skiff, now stored in a barn in North Texas, we will
have a fine representation of their work on display.
