August - COVVC Home Page
by Brenda Agan
If you missed the Arthritis Foundation show this year, you’ll want to plan to be there next year. It was Fabulous with
a capital “F”. Several club members came for the Friday night Cruise-In. I worked my usual stints on Saturday, where we had
only a dozen or so cars, but the quality was phenomenal and, as expected, some that I’ve never seen before. The word of the
day was “original” with low miles. Brad Shisler took the Best Import award Friday night for his ’57 Beetle, which also won
Best of Show VW and the CD101.9 sponsored award on Saturday. Between both days and two cars, he walked away with 6
trophies, or was that 7? I apologize if I missed any other Friday award winners. VW’s received 5 Awards of Excellence on
Saturday and the scores were close. Thank you, Mark Richmond, for helping with judging. Not counting VW’s, the most
impressive display was the 70 or so Model A Fords, too fantastic for words.
Thanks to the Raymer’s, Bailey’s, Garrett’s, Dick & Patty, Carol LaSala and Brad Shisler for joining me at the TMobile grand opening on July 19. Even store manager, Dineen Speer parked her Jetta with us after a quick spit-shine. We all
had a good time relaxing and chatting. The number of cars was small but mighty and everyone came away with a prize, even
Brad who squeaked by tied for last, much to everyone’s amazement, not to mention the blow to Brad’s ego. Mark and Debi
were pleased to take first place. Yes, the competition was fierce, but we all came away amused at the outcome! The awesome
prizes were gasoline and prepaid Visa cards, so eat your heart out.
After sweating it up at T-Mobile, Brad and I were joined by our spouses, Carolyn and Jim along with Ted and Sue for
Kids N Kamp’s Mystery Night at the Polaris Hilton Ballroom. I am definitely doing this event next year. KNK had asked us
to provide a couple of 50’s Beetles for display to promote the 50’s theme. Ted’s and Brad’s cars were parked at the ballroom
entrance for the start of the evening. The Shisler’s and Agan’s stayed to participate in the sleuthing and we succeeded in solving the Mystery, but lost out in the tie-breaker. It made for a very long but extremely fun day. The COVVC logo flashed on the
giant screen in the ballroom throughout the evening. I received the following email from Chris Coulles of Circone &
Associates: “I want to thank you for your involvement in Mystery Night 2008! The vintage Beetles looked even more incredible than I could have imagined (why don't they make cars like that anymore!? I'd buy one in a heartbeat!) They added so
much to the evening, we had people commenting all night on those cars. Thanks for your hard work and flexibility - it truly
contributed to our night!” Chris, it was our pleasure and I’m sure we can hook you up with a car!

Thoughts From Your President
by Brenda Agan
Wow, the event we all look forward to is just
around the corner…down Route 40…and taking over
Watkins Memorial High School! Volksfest is here, so after
you finish reading this newsletter you need to shine up
your VW and pack it up with all the usual Volksfest necessities – walking shoes, sunscreen, chair, door prizes…the
list goes on. This is our most exciting event and I can’t
wait to see all those beautiful vehicles roll in on Saturday
morning! But, before that happens there are a few lastminute housekeeping details to address.
First and foremost, please make sure your name is
on Marilyn and Teresa’s Volunteer Roster for at least one
time slot. Our army of volunteers is what makes Volksfest
THE BEST show around. If you missed their phone call,

please check to see where you are needed and call one of
them ASAP. Your time is precious and we cannot thank
you enough for offering it, nor can we pull off a successful show without it.
This year we are fortunate to have parking help
by a local Boy Scout troop and Kids N Kamp will send a
group of parents to help with gate staffing and other
assorted jobs. We will also have a new crew of ballot
counters who have been busy working out the details of a
slightly more “automated” method of getting the list of
class winners organized for announcement at the awards
presentation. I am determined to find a way to keep on

During the two day Arthritis Show event, Brad
Shisler had the kind of weekend one can only dream
about, scoring the six foot trophy and best of class for
the all original 914, and best import, best of show VW and the B107.9 award for his
beautifully restored Oval Window. WOW! It’s nice to see a fellow COVVC member reap
the rewards of all the hard work that goes into preparing and maintaining two cars to
the standard these two winners represent. Congratulations Brad!

Celebrating 21 Years Of Service!
for a good night’s sleep and the fun begins very bright and
very early Saturday morning. If you are not there, you are
definitely SQUARE!
After what will be a rewarding, albeit very long, very
hot day, we’ll stumble up the road and around the corner to
Yummies Grill and Bar on Lois Lane (that’s not a typo) in
Pataskala to soothe our tired feet, quench our thirsts and
share show anecdotes. (If you don’t have any of those to
share, just share stories!) The only thing organized about this
part of the day will be our own section of the restaurant and
a short line for a cold drink. (No sign-up required.) Check out
their menu at www.yummiesgrill.com – something for every
taste and pocketbook (which may be light after buying all
those goodies at Volksfest). They have an outdoor patio
which we politely declined in favor of air conditioning.
Thanks go to Bruce Raymer and Pete Knoll for scouting out
this venue.
Now, although I said this last month, here’s a
reminder about door prizes. We have been accumulating
some nice door prizes for the show, but more are needed. If
you frequent an auto supply store, restaurant or other business, please ask if they will make a door prize donation. It
never hurts to ask and it’s worked for me. If they say yes, get
two business cards, one to attach to the prize and one for Tina

who will send a thank-you to the business. If you’re thinking
about donating a purchased item but are on a tight budget,
check out Big Lots, Wal-Mart and your local dollar store. No
contribution is too small. We can assemble donations into
some great prizes. A novel idea: gas gift cards!
Once Volksfest 18 is behind us, we WILL meet in
August on our usual 2nd Thursday of the month which will
be the 14th, our usual time, 7:30 and at our usual place, the
Maennerchor. This time come HUNGRY. Marilyn and I will
once again arrange for pizza (monetary donations accepted
but not mandatory) and we’ll share more of those dreaded
anecdotes. Seriously, with Volksfest upon us, summer is zipping by at lightning speed, but there are a lot more VW
events on the horizon to attend, so come learn what’s coming
up.
Please feel free to call me at (614) 323-2593 with
any last-minute questions, or email me at
[email protected]. My final wish for you is that you
enjoy a spectacular Volksfest. Welcome our guests with a
huge smile and they will return the favor – and return next
year. Let’s have FUN!

If it’s the Fourth of July, it must be raining in Upper
Arlington! Does that stop the COVVC faithful from showing
up in force, NO! With wet weather firmly in place for yet
another holiday weekend in Ohio, our club simply gets in
their vintage rides and gets on with it. We had ten fine German air

LIFE IN THE 'PAST' LANE
by Marilyn Allen
Continued from July,2008.....................
The person chosen to promote our club through out the
year was Brett McCormick. Treasurer Ted Chaney gave a
report of $8600 incoming. He reported that outgoing was
$8000 and that there was around $7000 in the bank. He stated that a check would be presented to Kids-in-Kamp at the
January meeting.
October, 1997, was full of events for our club. On
October 5th, 1997, a group of 5 vw's led by Don Wuertz
journied to the annual Oktoberfest held in Minster. Ohio. The
cars were always a popular part of the parade.
The October meeting was held on October 9th at
Capoziellos. Membership chair Teresa Schleifer announced
that the latest membership count was 287 families.
October 7th,1997 was the date of the South East Ohio
Vintage Volkswagen Club meeting in Athens, Ohio. The
Southeastern Club hosted a picnic and campout at Lake Hope

Arthritis Show 2008!
With picture perfect weather for the entire weekend, this years Arthritis
Show was another smashing success! Over 1000 cars made the scene for
the Friday night cruise in, and Saturdays event also had record attendance.
This show has everything from a track roadster recreation (lower left), to
a fabulous line up of brass era cars (lower middle), to our favorites! (lower
and middle right), to a Vespa CAR! (upper right, with Debi getting the story
of the cars restoration from the proud owner). Club president Brenda Agan
once again organized our Show Within A Show area on Saturday. Great job
Brenda. Plan on attending the 2009 Arthritis Show NOW, you will not be
disappointed!

Fun!
-T---MOBILE
photos by Mark Garrett
The COVVC was recently invited by T-Mobile to help open their new store on
Hamilton and Morse Roads. With hot and sunny weather the order of the day, we
had a nice turn out of pretty German cars to compliment the grand opening of the
German based company. Besides free food and great prizes, our club received some
great exposure before Volksfest. As we were preparing to leave, a fellow pulled up
in a new Passat and was quite excited to learn of our upcoming show and plans to
attend. A win win situation if there ever was one! Thanks to all of the members that braved the HOT day. After this afternoon
gathering, club president Brenda Agan and club reporter Brad Shisler
went directly to the Kids-N-Kamp murder mystery fund raiser that
evening. That’s dedication.
We will stuff goodie bags at the newsletter folding
on August 1st at Maenchor and finish stuffing on August
8th if necessary.
Brenda said she is looking for the big white vinyl
banner.
Ann has 9 hotel rooms blocked at Country Inn at the
airport if anyone is looking for rooms.
Bring door prizes to the show or the newsletter folding. Include name and address if they are from a business.
Stark checked out the show swap area and figured
out the area. Need a couple of volunteers to help him
and Mike Young Sat Am to help park vendors.
Ted - got all the Bubbleheads for the 1st place trophies, working on the wood base. 2nd and 3rd place will
be certificate in a glass frame. Brenda said the trophies
will save us about $500 this year. She talked to byers
about a donation toward Kids n Kamp or COVVC.
Kevin said since they have not been paying for their display at the show, they could probably pay $500 for their
spot.
Marilyn said she, Teresa, and Linda will be calling
members to volunteer. There will be a list of volunteers
in the August newsletter. She said their will be a scout
troop to help with spectator parking. Tom said he will
go over the parking with the troop Sat AM. Chuck asked
if we are going to give the troop a donation. Marilyn
said the workers will get a coupon for a sandwich and
drink. Bob said after the show, we could consider a
donation to the troop.
Marilyn plans to have the year books on display at
the show museum and would like trophies, cars, and T
shirts on display.
Bob said there is currently $905 in our checking
account.
He also said their were 10 vehicles in the UA 4th of
July parade. Said one group had a large wooden VW
bus in the parade which they were going to tear down.
Tom Kern talked to them and they gave it to us to display at our show.
Linda said we currently have 195 members - 106
paid memberships.
Tina gave a Cruise In report.
Ted said T shirts on sale tonight for $10, $12 day of

We would like to display the show t-shirts in the museum at this year's Volksfest. The
shirts would be returned to you at the end of the show. Shirts for the following years are
needed: 1992,1993, 1994, 1995,1996,1997, 1998, 2002,2003 and 2008.
If you have a shirt to donate, Please call(299-4841) or e-mail([email protected]) me
with the year. The shirts can be brought on the Friday night before the show or the day of
the show. It will be interesting to see all of our shirts again and see how many we can
remember. Thanks so much.
