Thoughts From Your Board Member
By Stark Hughes
Several things always happen each
spring. Plants bloom, the days get longer and
cabin fever goes away just to name a few.
The one thing that I always look forward to (and I can
speak for everyone reading this article) is bringing my vintage VW out of hibernation and driving. No worries about
snow or the horror of hearing salt pellets slamming against
the undercarriage eating away at whatever they stick to.
Cruising around I have grown accustomed to glances,
nods and the traditional thumbs up.
Even when I have been in the unfortu655B Providence

&
nate situation of being on the
side of the road with my head
buried in the engine compartment trying to figure out why it just stopped running,
someone always stops and asks, ‘Do you need some
help?” Love them or hate them there’s something about
a vintage VW that draws attention.

pecializing in show quality detailing
Submitted by Tim Fox, this popular Zits cartoon depicts the perils of “in home” engine repairs! Thanks Tim!
May is my month to run the monthly meeting. As I
thought about what topic to cover I realized it’s been 10 years
since my bus has been restored. It’s the first restoration project I have done and I am amazed how it’s still maintained its
appearance. Except for occasional road debris or some UFO
flying off a truck I’m following, I’ve been fortunate not to
have any major dings or dents. Even my three kids wheeling
bikes and kid things in and out of my garage over the years
there’s been no “mystery” scratches no one will admit to.
When I started the project and got the blessing of my
wife, Mary, I also got a lot of advice from seasoned veterans.
Mark Garrett, Mike Young, Bill Duvall, and many others I
can’t recall at the moment. The one thing that was always
consistent with what they told me was put together a budget.
Check the budget in thorough detail, and when you know you
can do it for the amount, double it. That was the best advice
of all. Believe me the expression rust never sleeps is the
gospel when restoring a vintage VW. Rust will hide in every
nook, cranny and not seen to the eye cavity. Just when you
think there’s a solid area, you pull a piece and there it is, cancontinued on page three

nibalizing itself, RUST! At one time during the restoration I
had a 67 donor bus sitting next to my current 66 bus in my
garage.
Most of my neighbors view me as a person who marches to the beat of a different drummer but when my garage
door was up and both busses could be seen they started getting nervous. After I got all I could from the donor bus I
called Al Moore and I told him,” If you want what’s left, it’s
yours”. Al gladly took me up on the offer and transported the
carcass to the friendly confines of Fairfield County.
Restoration is similar to a treasure hunt. The search for
the elusive part is the utmost challenge. I could write for days
about all the interesting characters and people I made contact
with finding and negotiating for parts. Just when you think
the needed part doesn’t exist you’ll get an email saying.” I’ve
got one in my barn, basement, shed, or whatever”
The most important part of restoration in my opinion is
the paint and body work. It’s a combination of skill, knowledge, experience and art all blended together to put the finishing touch on a project. That’s the area that separates the
novice from the knowhow. When my bus got to that point I
took it to Craig Cline in beautiful Athens County. My good
friend, car junkie and one of the club founders Dave
Sheppard jumped at the opportunity to tow my bus to Craig’s
place. Craig’s place is “out there.” We passed his driveway 3

times before we realized we were where we were supposed
to be. When we pulled into the drive we were greeted by a
very large and thankfully friendly dog. Noticing several
VW’s in various stages of restoration we then knew we were
at the right place. We left it and when we went back it looked
like it just rolled off the Westphalia line in 1966.
In ending this month I have invited Craig to make the
trip up from Athens Co. to answer questions and give us
some insight on what it takes to restore a vintage VW. If
you’re contemplating a restoration project this will be a good
meeting to attend.
So get your vintage VW’s out of hibernation and bring
your restoration questions. Hope to see you next meeting.

Judy Diley
We are saddened to report that Judy Diley passed away on
April 14. As longtime club members, Judy, and husband
Tom were tireless in their contributions to the COVVC,

Let’s Talk Toys!
by Michael Williams
Welcome back everyone!! The toy I’m sharing with each of you this
month is actually a replica of a very famous VW drag car which terrorized the
California strips in the early 1970’s. This car was known as the EMPI Inch
Pincher Too driven by Darrell Vittone. Because of the
EMPI logo on the side of the car, the popularity of this
toy gathered speed like the actual car itself when it hit
store shelves in the 1970’s.
The example pictured is known as the “EMPI Love
Bug” among collectors and was manufactured by the
Taiyo Toy Company of Japan during the mid to late
1970s. This battery operated tinplate and plastic car is
10.6 inches long with raised Goodyear lettering blackwall racing tires. When the toy is switched on, multicolored lights blink in the rear window as the car begins to
move in a “mystery” bump and go pattern. This toy has
always been one of my favorites and always seems to
draw the attention of visitors when looking through my
VW toy collection.

This toy is fairly rare and is sought after by EMPI and
VW toy collectors alike. Being an EMPI collectible, the
toy continues to increase in value each year as demand outpaces supply. The value of the toy in good condition with no
box is around $75 to $100, with a boxed mint example coming in around $400 - $500. It’s not uncommon to see this toy
sell well above these figures when collectors get into a bidding war over the same car.
Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !!
before the show found many people camping at the show site.
Some of the members found time to attend the very popular
pre-show party at Ted's and Sue's.
Saturday, August 11th, was a perfect weather day for a
show. Our show was covered by the 2 magazines--Hot Vw
and VW Trends. Everyone agreed that this was the best show
ever. 274 cars were registered. People commented that there
were many other vw's in the parking lot that should have
been in the show. The fantastic show resulted in a fantastic
$900.000 for the 50/50 drawing. The winner was Mary
Hughes. Thanks to Stark Hughes and Mike Young, the swap
meet was a very busy and popular spot to be on show day.
Another popular spot was the dunk tank provided by Mile
Young and Motorkars. People were standing in line to try to
dunk some of our members. The activity raised $325 for Kids

Volunteers wore bright shirts provided by Byers. Byers
also provided a display of vehicles and merchandise.

VOLTAGE DROP TESTING
by Bruce Amacker
I put three starters in, and my car still cranks slow. Does
my car have VD (voltage drop)?
It’s too often that you will change a starter that
cranks slow before testing things to make sure the problem is the starter. There’s an easy test for available electricity to a component and it’s called a Voltage Drop Test.
You may know how to test the battery voltage and many
have the ability to properly load test the battery, but some
fail to understand a simple test to verify that sufficient
power is getting to the starter. Battery cables are the
obvious weak link and that pesky ground strap that is
usually under the transmission on VW’s.
The voltage drop test is quite simple- verifying that
there is sufficient power getting to the starter under load.
Under load is the key phrase here- we can all check for
voltage at the starter, but making sure it doesn’t drop off
under load is where many tests fall short. This test takes
only seconds using the simplest of voltmeters. Set your
digital volt meter on DC volts. Hook the red lead of your
meter to the battery positive post and the black lead of
your meter to the starter stud, not the cable end. Having
long alligator clip leads on your meter will come in
handy here. Disable your ignition by disconnecting the
coil lead to prevent the engine from starting during the
test. Have your assistant crank the engine 5-7 seconds
while you watch the meter, it should not read higher than
.5VDC, and most should read .2VDC or less. If it does
exceed .5V it indicates high resistance in the circuit, like
a bad or corroded battery cable. I’ve seen cables that
looked perfect visually and would not pass enough
amperage to light a headlight! Repeat the test on the
ground side of the system by connecting to the ground
post of the battery and the case of the starter, once again
it should read well below .5VDC while cranking. On the
ground side your problem could be not only the battery
ground strap, but also the ground strap under the transmission. I’ve even seen corroded starter mounting flanges be the
problem, where the starter is bolted tight to the transmission
case, but not grounded!
This test is important not only to diagnose the slow
cranking problem, but also to prove to the parts store counterman that you really do understand electricity and all three of
those starters he sold you really were defective. Sidebar: If
the nose bushing on the regular SR15X starter is worn, it can
cause excessive amp draw because the starter shaft will bind.
Be sure to inspect or replace the bushing whenever the starter
6
or engine is out. If you are using the “autostick” style starter,
this does not apply.
This test can be applied to virtually every electrical component or circuit on any car- starter, alternator, generator,
wiper motor, headlights, taillights, radio, etc. in the same
manner- one DVOM lead on the power source and one lead
on the power terminal into the component. Do you have one
dim headlight bulb? Instead of disassembling everything in
the system, diagnose the circuit by doing a VD test on the
power side of the headlight, and then the ground side of the
headlight. Common problems in this circuit may be a loose
or corroded fuse, or a corroded ground wire. Many times
these components will look fine visually, which is why it’s
important to test them electrically.
Have fun, good luck, and keep driving those classic
VW’s!
Linda and I really appreciate your willingness to volunteer. See the book at the May meeting.
Maennerchor folks really appreciate our presence. The time
has not been determined. The time will be announced at the
