Thoughts From Your COVVC Boardmember By Mark Garrett It’s August, and you know what that means, It’s Volksfest time once again! It just seems like yesterday we were all at the Spaghetti Warehouse, relaxing and reminicing about the fun filled past year. But as they say, time marches on and here we are, heading into Volksfest 23! For us oldtimers, we could never have imagenied that we would be doing this 23 years after that first, humble gathering. What started as a casual small show has grown L&I into the largest single day vintage VW event in Ohio. Hard to believe, isn’t it? Of course Volksfest would not be this successful, were it not for an amazing collection of hard working and dedicated enthusiasts, many who have been here since day one. At the end of the day, there is only one reason so many club members have contributed so much over the years, and that’s the passion we all Continued on page three The 31st Annual en Classic Auto Show mmke And Cruise In Why look, it’s the COVVC gang at the recent Len Immke Car Show! Be sure to check out pages six and seven for a complete run down of activities and high lights from this always amazing show, including the winners from the Saturday VW show withing a show. With post card perfect weather (compared to the 105 degrees last year), it was another great event. Always a good time! Next Monthly Meeting - August 9th - 7:00 PM At Watkins Memorial High School - Site of Volksfest! Third Annual PoloM atch & C oncourse Photos and text by Mark and Debi Garrett Sunny skies with the high temp of 75. That’s picture perfect weather for the Third Annual Polo Match and Concourse, held at the historic Bryn Du Mansion in Granville, Ohio. Debi, Gabi and I had Gertrude all spiffied up for a day of relaxation and rubbing elbows with all of those Ferrari’s, Porsche’s, Vipers and many other high end rides. Besides the Concourse, there was action on the polo field with Team Putsch going up against Studio 47. While we didn’t stay to the very end, Team Putsch was up 14 to 2 on our way out! Of course we just had to stop in Granville on the way home for a bite to eat and some refreshing ice cream. With our tummies full, and a fun day of memorable cars (and horses!), we headed back to Columbus to wrap up another way too quick weekend. Sadly, Kevin lost his life in a motorcycle accident last August at the age of 24.At the time I could not part with his pride and joy. A friend has stored "Emily" in a heated garage and started and driven her over the cold months. Heartbreaking as it will be, the time has come. "Emily" is an Orange 1981 Rabbit pick up. She is in fine shape, restored nicely with VW parts. She sports brand new tires, a new head gasket, and alternator. I would want her to be purchased by someone who would appreciate and treasure her. I am reaching out, if anyone in the club would have interest or point me in the right direction. Beth Hillmann -(614) 395-6511 6/13 72 Beetle for sale - Purchased in 1993 from the car's second owner who brought it from California. It was my daily driver until about seven years ago. It has been in my garage ever since. While I was driving it almost everything I couldn't do myself was done by Jans in Westerville so Kevin from Jans (now of Kevin's Auto Repair knows the car well). The floor pans were replaced by Ray Bets in Mt. Vernon in 97. The fenders are fiberglass with the front being pre 67 style and they are 3 inches wider than stock. I bought them from Creative Car Craft in 98 and had the whole car painted by Bernie's in Clintonville. The hood and most of the other body parts came from Volkfest swap meets. I still have the 72 hood and plenty of extra parts. I'm asking $2500 - (New lower price!) for it because the heads are pulling away from the engine and so it runs horribly. It needs at least new heads but a whole new long block would be better. The Beetle is in Worthington now if you'd like to see it call me at 614-593-6214. Of course it wouldn’t be Volksfest without some drama, and this year sees a relocation of the spectators parking areas. Not to worry though, as the ever present Boy Scouts are all over it, and by the time the gates open on August 10th, it will all be under control. Speaking of under control, pre registrations have been coming in at a fast and furious pace, and it looks like we will be right at previous numbers by show time. Marilyn Allen and Linda Brown have been on the phone rounding up Volksfest volunteers, so don’t be surprised if you get “the call”! It takes a tremendous amount of folks to pull this off each year, and Marilyn has noted recently the numbers are down. We might have to double up on several of the shifts to make ends meet. Lets all pitch in and help make this a great event. As I have stated in past years, each Volksfest always seems to carry with it one or two hurdles to deal with, but each year show morning arrives, and Volksfest unfolds with very few complaints. That’s a miracle in itself considering the size the event has grown to. Just a reminder, the monthly meeting will be AT THE SHOW SITE, on Friday the 9th, at 7:00pm, under the big tent at the side of the school. We will review final details for the show, and do a fair amount of set up also. We will be setting up the show class cones in the parking lots, and also stuffing the goody bags for the show car hand outs. Another year, another Volksfest. With everyone pitching in, lets make it another fabulous event! See you all there! American Awards/Reynoldsburg Trophy has agreed to make our name badges for $5.50 for a pin badge and $6 for a magnet badge. If we order 6 or more, the cost will decrease. I think that the magnet badges will be very popular. Thanks, Brian, for finding us a new name badge supplier. For the 10 of you who ordered new name badges, the name badges will be available at the July meeting. For anyone who needs a name badge for the show, I will be taking orders at the July meeting or e-mail me with your order. I’ll take a break from the split bus restoration series to talk about something many of us take for granted- safety. How may of you have a currently inspected fire extinguisher in your shop hanging properly on the wall? How many of you keep a small fire extinguisher in your cars? I hope you all do, and keep it at hand in a potentially dangerous situation such as when gasoline is accidentally splashed around. I suggest you do a bit of reading about the different types of dry chemical and CO2 fire extinguishers, I have both in my shop because of the problems a dry chemical unit can make. Dry chemical extinguishers are better at stopping fires, but make a terrible mess that is commonly very damaging for what you spray it on. In my opinion, I’ll shoot the CO2 unit and try to put out a small fire before I resort to the dry chemical, which will cause heavy corrosion on what ever you’re spraying it on, perhaps forcing a replacement of that item. Wiring harnesses are really damaged by dry chemical, and I’ve even heard horror stories about the corrosion induced onto VW engine cases requiring replacement. There are on board fire extinguisher systems available and marketed specifically to ACVW owners for under $300 that incorporate a pressurized fire retardant that automatically deploys when temperatures exceed normal limits in the engine bay. In my shop I have several fire extinguishers- many more than commercial fire code requires. When I had my commercial repair shop I had a cart mounted fire extinguisher consisting of two tanksenough to put out a full fuel tank ablaze on a car. OK, I’m a bit paranoid about fire, but it’s always better to be over-prepared in a critical situation. How about safety glasses? Do you wear them occasionally, all the time, or only when using power tools? Or, not at all? I am fussy about this also and wear mine from the moment I walk into the shop until I leave. I also wear heavy latex gloves, mostly to prevent grease stains on my hands but they also provide minimal protection from cuts and scrapes, as well as helping prevent infection for those that inevitably happen. Do you use a breathing mask appropriate for the environment? I learned a harsh lesson years ago when I did some overhead sanding (five minute’s worth) letting the dust get in my face. My penalty? 18 months of acute bronchitis with many doctor visits and medical treatments to get rid of it. I am now fussy about dust and dirt, like when grinding or sanding with a power tool. In doing my bus right now, there’s a lot of that going on so I wear an approved 3M mask with See pages six and seven for more great photos! These are not appropriate for painting, which requires a separate mask or clean air system. How about ear protection? The noise levels we endure with many power tools exceed safe limits. I don’t like running an air sander/grinder because of the piercing noise and use ear plugs regularly. I commonly even put headphone-style ear muffs over them to prevent hearing damage and to provide a quiet (to me) work environment. And there’s another benefit from earplugs- if you’ve ever had a hot spark hit your eardrum when grinding, welding or cutting (fairy common, actually) the pain level is intense. Steel toe shoes is an area that I lack in. I admit it, I’m not comfortable in them and rarely wear them, but I know I should. How about a cell phone if you are working alone? Is it always in your pocket so if you are pinned or injured you can easily call for help? That phone may be worthless if it’s sitting on the toolbox and not within reach. Asking about jackstands sounds ridiculous as I hope nobody would consider getting under a vehicle that is not securely resting on stands. I have an odd concern about my bus- it’s on high stands (12 ton), about 30” up. Being a completely empty shell it is fairly light- I can easily pick up any corner of the bus off its stand. I’m concerned about bumping this shell and knocking it off the stands! As an extra precaution I have a chain threaded through the windows and connected to an overhead beam. If I do knock it off the stands it can only drop a few inches before the chain tightens up and supports it. How about storage of flammables? Do you keep gas cans in the shop? Being cautious about fire makes me store my gas cans outdoors in a plastic deck box so sparks cannot find them. I keep my car batteries and cardboard boxes in a different room from where my welding gear is, too. Years ago one of my techs dropped a wrench on top of a battery crossing the terminals and causing an explosion. He was not wearing glasses at the time and was lucky to have no permanent damage. COVVC will be hosting its Volksfest this year on August 10 in Pataskala. I’ll be doing a Tech Talk as usual, and the topic will be “Basic Electrical Testing”. I hope to see you there, bring your problems and questions and I’ll do my best to sort them out. There will also be several door prizes for attendees! Have fun, BE SAFE, and keep driving those vintage VW’s, the most reliable and safest car is one that gets driven regularly. 9 Let’s Talk Toys! This example was manufactured by the Daishin toy company of Japan during the mid1960s into the early 1970s. This battery operated tinplate car is 9.8 inches long and represents a green and white German police car. When the switch is turned on, the car begins to move forward with a bump and go action while producing a wailing siren sound and blinking blue light on the roof. The car is a treat to watch and never seems to do the same thing when I flip the switch. 50/50 This toy is very rare. In my 25 years of collecting, I’ve only seen a few examples of this toy for sale. The toy looks exactly like the green and white police version made by the Taiyo toy company of Japan. The only difference is the Daishin version has a German shield on both doors and “POLIZEI” is smaller. The value of this toy in good condition with no box is around $250 to $275, with a boxed mint example coming in around $425 - $475. It’s not uncommon though to see this toy sell well above these figures when collectors get into a bidding war over the same car. ± 12:00 noon BALLOT COUNTINGSPECTATOR GATE MEMBERSHIP Brad Shisler & MARKETING (FRONT/BACK) Carolyn Shisler Museum Host Hostesses 50/50 Kids n' Kamp Ray Duane Randall Easley Until next month… Happy Toy Hunting !! Having the meeting at the show site allowed the members to see how the new parking arrangement would work. At the Thursday meeting, all of the last minute adjustments were made and everything and everyone was ready for Volksfest 13th. Attendance was down from Volksfest 12. Many thought that the low attendance was due to the rain of 2002. It was reported that attendance was down at other shows. The new arrangement for cars worked out well. The vendors liked their arrangements on the grass. The new vendors at the show were impressed and stated that they would return in 2004. All in all, everyone agreed that Volksfest 13 was very successful. Awards were given out in 30 categories. The winners included........ What else can you say about a show where you can see everything from a brand new Lamborghini to a brass era Reo, and pretty much everything else in between? The Annual Len Immke show is one of the events that Debi and I always look forward to. With the diversity of cars to peruse, it is almost to much to take in in one day. This year was certainly no exception. The 2014 Lamborghini Aventador was breathtaking. In classic Italian Red, it struck a dramatic pose among its other sporty relatives. A most impressive super car display all in all. At the other end of the spectrum was the brass era cars, also another impressive collection of cars from the early 1900s to the 1930s. Filling in the gaps was every conceivable era of automobile. I always enjoy the late 50’s early 60’s land yacht. There was a mmke Text by Mark Garrett, photos by Mark and Debi Garrett and Brenda Agan And Cruise In good turn out of Volkswagens this year, with 14 fine German masterpieces gracing the grassy parking area. Congratulations to all of this years winners. Truly an outstanding group of cars! After several trips around, Debi and I were ready to head out. But we weren’t done for the day by any means. We also managed to attend the annual wine festival at the North Market, followed by the annual cruise through the hotel parking lots to check out all of those cool Good Guy’s street rods. What a weekend!
