With most of the hard work
behind them, it was time for
some fun and a group shot
at Volksfest 18! This is just a
small portion of the total
number of volunteers that
helped to make this years
show another roaring success. Congratulations to all!
Thanks to Pete Knoll for
snapping the pic.

Thoughts From Your President
by Brenda Agan
Wow! That’s about all I can say about Volksfest 18.
We were fortunate to have great weather and a fabulous
turnout. It’s obvious that many of you worked very hard
passing out show flyers and talking up the show. I can’t
say enough about all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly to make Volksfest 18 a huge success.
I was the doubting Thomas back in May, concerned
that high gas prices and tough economic times would
impact our show. I had heard that attendance was down a
several shows at the beginning of summer. I’m sure that
our reputation for putting on a great show made the difference.
If you missed Volksfest, here’s a quick recap: 310 registered show cars, 1400 spectators and about 70 vendors.

We had 150 show cars in place before 10:30. As always,
the quality of the cars was phenomenal. I think it was
around 1:30 that I stopped to take in all of the cars and
thought, “What a beautiful sight!” I can’t wait to see our
show featured in Hot VW’s Magazine!
Marilyn and Teresa did en excellent job on the
COVVC Museum and Volksfest T-shirt display with the
help of Johnny Ray and Sarah Raymer. The T-shirts provided an excellent trip down Volksfest memory lane. We
could have sold every one of them.
My special thanks go out to Tom Kern and those who
helped him save the orange wooden splitty bus from the

With the picture perfect
weather that blessed us at
Volksfest continuing into
the next weekend, it was
time to hit the road for
another show! Your roving

their unique trophies at the
Tiffin “Horsepower And

main trophies were Tiffin
Crystal glasses! Beautiful.
Mark Richmond also won a

put this pic in Zundfolge as a tribute to him.
Not a problem. God bless you Vinney.
chopping block so it could become a hopefully
permanent fixture at future Volksfests. Mike
Young, Ted Chaney, the Motorkars Race Team
and more made a lot of Kodak moments possible for people attending our event.
We were fortunate to have Pataskala Scout
Troop #21 with leader, Mike Dalton take care of
spectator parking this year. Mike showed up
Friday night to line the parking lot and the boys
worked very hard on Saturday. COVVC will
present the troop with a Certificate of
Appreciation and a $200 donation at their Court of Honor on
September 29. If you would like to attend, please call me at
614-323-2593 for details.
The day was not without its challenges. Our bicyclists
did an excellent job of getting the cars to their appointed
classes without the usual benefit of our orange cones. Would
the person who has the cones, please come forward? Stark
Hughes and his crew managed to organize the swap area
despite the home run fence that sliced through the middle of
it. Helen Albright and Carolyn Shisler were able to enter all

registered cars in the database and sort them for the awards
ceremony in spite of a nasty glitch. My special thanks to Brad
Shisler for taking on the challenge of coordinating the registration database with the ballot counting, utilizing an entirely new crew of ballot counters.
I’m sure there were more challenges that were met without my knowledge – thanks for sparing me the stress! There
are so many names I could add here. You should all feel
proud of a job well done.

Celebrating 21 Years Of Service!
I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the Kids ‘N Kamp
families for volunteering their precious time to help make
Volksfest a success. Without their help, Marilyn would be
hard-pressed to fill the close to 100 volunteer time slots by
show time. When you add in the impromptu jobs that are
done by folks who jump in and help as needed, you realize
that volunteers are our number one asset!
Please try to attend this month’s meeting for more Volksfest
discussions. Bring your comments and suggestions. We’ve
already started making plans for Volksfest 19. We will play
host to the Volkswagen Club of America who will hold their
annual convention in Columbus the weekend of our show.
Hopefully this will provide us with the opportunity for even
more publicity.
With Volksfest 18 a pleasant memory, be sure to enjoy a few
more Volkswagen shows before you have to put your baby to
bed for the winter. There are some great events coming up
including the premier club event, Burning Bubblehead II
Poker Rally and Tailgate on Saturday, Sept. 13. Meet at
Motorkars at noon; rally begins at 1:00 with final stop at Al
Moore’s farm for cookout, music, OSU game, etc.

Brenda said 14 people were here for the newsletter folding and stuffing goodie bags. She said she will host the Sept
newsletter folding and Albrights volunteered for Oct folding.
Brenda was wearing a customized VW shirt by Mark
Richmond’s wife. Let her know if you would like a customized shirt.
Articles about our show were in Cols Dispatch
Weekender, Columbus Monthly, Hot VW, and also several
local weekly papers.
There were 310 registered cars and around 1400 spectators. Stark said there were around 70 to 75 swappers. He
said Todd Sichel was a really big help in the swapper area.
May need to re work the swap area next year. Swappers
couldn’t get out once they were there.
Has anyone seen the parking cones?
Boy Scouts did an outstanding job of parking the spectators and are planning on coming back next year. Chuck suggested giving the Boy Scouts a donation of $100, Ted suggested $200 or $250. Marilyn said the troop leader said the
scouts were working for their community service. Helen
suggested giving the troop a certificate of thanks. Brenda
made a motion to give the troop $200, 2nd by Linda. All
approved. Doug Schleifer suggested sending the check and
certificate as soon as possible.
The school is thinking of putting up a pavilion next to
their concession stand. Would we like to have the show cars
back on the grass area. Judy said what if it rains??
Kathy K said speakers too loud, Tom K said how about
a live band?

Treasurer report - Bob said income up, trophy expense
down, donation from Byers received. Will have a complete
report at Sept meeting.
Membership - Linda said we received 47 signed up at
show (new and renewals)
She said “Ride” made it to the meeting tonight after leaving her stranded on the way to the show. Thanks Bill Duvall
for his help. Linda was presented with the Duvall Award.
Stark said his VW stopped at 310 and wouldn’t go on
when he was leaving the show.
Bob said he is organizing a caravan from his house to
Clifton Mills on Sept 13th (Has now been rescheduled for

October 18th, 2008). This is the same day at Mike Young’s
Poker Run.
Marilyn thanked all the volunteers on behalf of her,
Linda, and Teresa. Also thanked volunteers for helping with
the museum.
A get well card was passed for Sue Smith who is in the
hospital.
Brenda read several good e mails about out show.
Ran out of T shirts, had 150 made, need to order more
next year or print them at the show. Could put a order form
on the web site to order and pay for the shirts.
Jim Meyer suggested getting zip codes from spectators.
T
he reason for
Volksfest’s Success!
Long before the gates swing open for
Volksfest, the most important activity of
stuffing all of the goody bags that are
handed out to the show participants must
be completed! Pictured here are the fine
club members that stepped up and volunteered to get the ball rolling for Volksfest
18. Many thanks to all who attended the
“Stuff and Fold” function at the
Columbus Maennerchor.

Horsepower for History
After the high of our fabulous Volkfest show, what better
way to unwind than to attend another event, this time the first
annual Horsepower for History Concourse d’Elegance in
Tiffin, Ohio.
With another very un-August like day of moderate temps
and low humidity, August 16th would turn out to be picture
perfect from beginning to end.
One of the many pluses of this show was that it didn't begin
until 2:00 in the afternoon. How cool is that! With that is mind,
the first order of business was breakfast at Scramblers with
Bob and Helen Albright. The day just always seems to go a bit
smoother if there are pancakes involved! With breakfast completed, Bob, Debi and myself (Helen had a previous commitment) headed up 23 North to the sleepy little town of Tiffin.
The drive up was lovely with those low temps making for perfect aircooled cruising.
Upon arrival at Hedges Boyer Park, we were greeted at the
front gate by the event organizer, Casey Putsch. Casey knew
Gertrude had arrived as we had pre-registered, and included the
story of the old german gal! He escorted us to our parking spot,
right next to Mark Richmond, who had arrived a short time
before. After the requisite cleaning and display set up, we could
sit back and watch the event unfold.
While the amazing assortment of autos were arriving, Debi
and I hitched a ride back into town with one of the Tiffin Glass
Museum employees. The museum is a collection of Tiffin pro-
duced glass ware from the middle 1800’s to the 1980’s. Even
if you aren’t into glass, it is a very well done display.
After a leisurely walk back to the park, we couldn't
believe our eyes, as the grounds were filled with a very select
group of autos, including Auburn, Maxwell, Lincoln,
Bentley, Aston Martin, Porsche, Lotus, Jaguar, Ford GT40,
BMW, Lancia, Ferrari, and of course, Volkswagen! Mid way
through the show, a vintage bi-plane flyover provided aditional thrills.
Antique "Tiffin" crystal stemware was given as awards.
The pieces are identical to those used by the Trumans, the
Presleys, and even at the Monaco palace. The grand award
was an identical gold-rimmed champagne glass to which
Princess Grace Kelly acquired from Tiffany's in New York
for use in the Monaco palace with Prince Rainier! Both Mark
Richmond and Debi and I were fortunate enough to receive
the very special trophies, with Richmond also receiving a
signed auto racing print, presented by the artist.
The final bit of excitement came at the end of the show,
as all of the winners were invited to take a three mile tour of
the town with police escorts! It is always fun to run red lights
legally!
The drive home was framed by a breathtaking sunset to
our right and a full moon rising on our left. As I said, picture
perfect from beginning to end.

With the continuing beautiful weather
in place for yet another weekend, it
was off to the Columbus Park Of
Roses for the third annual Cruise the
Ville! This is another show that has experienced growth each year, and ‘08 was no different, as close to 300 vintage rides of all shapes and sizes added even more color to the
beautiful Park of Roses! Club members Mark Richmond, Bob O’Shaunesy, Bill
Lowendesky and Mark Garrett were in attendance, with Bill and Mark G bringing
home some of the gold at the end of the day! The diversity and quality of the cars was
truly amazing. This is one of those shows that you MUST mark your ‘09 calender for,
you will not be disappointed!

VOLKSFEST 2008!
6
With the rousing success of Volksfest 18 behind us, lets take some time to savor the feeling of a job well done! Just when you think this
event can’t get any better, we seem to raise the bar just a little bit more! On this page are just a VERY SMALL sampling of the days highlights. With many old regulars in attendance, and several never seen before vehicles, it was definetly difficult to pick ONE favorite car. Sit
back, grab your favorite beverage and relive the day, one more time!
