THE THREE WEEKS
th
The 17 of Tammuz (July 24) begins a period of
three weeks of national mourning, which culminates on Tisha B’Av (August 14), the day which
commemorates the destruction of both Temples in
Jerusalem. Jewish law and practice have developed
several degrees of mourning beginning with 17th
Tammuz reaching its solemn climax on Tisha B’Av
and tapering off gradually in the day after Tisha
B’Av.
No marriage or other festive occasions are held.
Haircutting and listening to music are curtailed until
after Tisha B’Av. No new clothing should be bought
or worn during this time. The blessing of
Shehecheyanu is not said during the “three weeks”
and therefore, no new fruit should be eaten for the
first time in the season during this period. (Some
authorities make Shabbos an exception with regard
to Shehecheyanu)
The 17th of Tammuz (July 24 observed)
Tammuz 17th must be observed, health permitting, as a fast day by boys 13 and older and girls
12 and older.
The Nine Days (August 5 - 14)
The Nine Days are from first of Av until the
afternoon of the 10th of Av. During this time
(excluding the Shabbos) no meat or wine is permitted.
Tisha B’Av
(August 14)
The fast begins at sunset of the previous day and
terminates at nightfall of the next day. No joy of
any kind is permitted on Tisha B’Av, not even studying the Torah, except portions dealing with the Destruction of the Bays Hamikdosh, etc. Wearing of
leather shoes is not permitted. Until the afternoon,
it is not permitted to sit on a chair, but only a low
stool or on the floor. Eicha and Kinnos (dirges) are
recited and Tallis and Tefillin are put on in the afternoon for Mincha instead of in the morning.

GETTING A HEAD START
Although we may have Sukkot in the snow, I am kind of excited to have the High Holiday season
begin in October. Unlike most years when as the school bells ring we know it’s a sign for the Shofar to
sound, this year we are given almost an entire month to prepare for the Days of Awe, the days when
the book of Life is open for our taking.
Not only is the late coming good for preparation time, it also sets the entire Holiday season extremely
close to the actual date for the Presidential elections. That being said, we should use this time to get
excited for the opportunity of September.
So the question becomes, how will we decide to vote? We must realize that this is a very important
questions and it has nothing to do with November. I fear that the political season will distract us from
the more important voting of October. I am referring to how we will vote for ourselves, our synagogue,
community, and our world. Hashem wants to see that we take this voting seriously, and we have to
commit ourselves, through the extra time given, to ponder and clarify what it is we need for the
welfare of our Jewish experience.
Here are a few ideas that can help us get started.
Torah first- One of the best ways to feel like you are connecting to Hashem and the Jewish people
is through the study of Torah. There is no shortage of information on every Torah portion, all
areas of Jewish Law, Talmud, and Midrash, google anything and you will find it. Also look into
the many learning opportunities our Shul provides on a weekly basis. If you need any assistance
on any learning initiative please feel free to contact me.
Prayer- Every single day we are given at least three opportunities to speak to Hashem to ask Him
for the things we need, the things we want for both ourselves and for mankind. Prayer is the
greatest comfort zone that we have to feel like we are doing the right thing and having a
sincere conversation with G-d.
Pray with a Minyan- One of the most cherished features of Judaism is that people come together
and unit in the service of G-d, join the force, be in Shul when there is Minyan, the value is
unmeasurable.
Student of Avraham- We read all about Avraham on Rosh Hashanah, we might as well get a
heads start and follow his lead. Let us look to how we can be more welcoming to guests, ask
who is in need of a visit, would appreciate a phone call, and needs a helping hand, all the
things which show that we are interested in helping others.
Connection to Am Yisrael and Eretz Yisrael- Learn the history of our people and our homeland,
learn about the past and the present. Entering into the High Holidays we recognize that
Hashem is the king over the entire world and we are His people taking care of His palace. This
stage might be the most introspective, it may lack in action, but when truly understood, it helps
with all the other categories, it brings us to our feet and helps shape what we decide to do
daily.
We will be voting for a healthy and sweet new year, a year filled with blessing and peace, a year filled
with inspiration and motivation, and now is the time to think of how all the things we want to vote for
will become a reality. Let us begin with the month of August and cherish the entire month of
September to get us ready for a year where we know we voted correctly, where we vote for all that
Hashem is anticipating us to do.
Bi’Hatzlacha,
~Rabbi Avi Kilimnick

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
At our annual meeting in June I had the great pleasure of announcing that this year, at our Ambassadors of Humanity gala
we will be changing things up a bit. We usually announce an
honoree on behalf of our Shule, an honoree on behalf of Israel,
and an honoree on behalf of our community. This year our
designated honorees fit all of those categories and more. With
great pleasure and respect we will be honoring our very own
Rabbi Shaya and Nechie Kilimnick at our annual Ambassadors
of Humanity event. It promises to be quite an evening. The
date is yet to be determined but this coming year plan on joining us for a grand celebration!
Our annual meeting was well attended with many enjoying a
wonderful sunny summer BBQ picnic in our courtyard prior to
the meeting. I want to thank Barbara Gray for chairing this
event, Camelia Marzouk for all her help in preparing the dinner
and Stephen Schwartz and Aharon Baruch for their BBQing expertise.
Over the summer, Shule committees are continuing to meet
and address many different aspects of our Shule community. If
you would like to get involved or share any thoughts on Congregation Beth Sholom please don’t hesitate to contact me at
[email protected] or my cell phone at 752-7574.
As the summer continues to unfold I hope you are taking advantage of enjoying the sunshine and warmth both outside as
well as inside our Shule.

ROVA
We are looking forward to a
wonderful new year of our
Rova Hebrew High School.
This year we will be having a
new line up for our weeknight
classes. We will be having
programs on Israel, baking
and Jewish trivia, all geared
to shaping a strong
foundation for Jewish
knowledge.
In our Sunday classes we will
begin the year as we prepare
for the upcoming elections
with the course “The Bill of
Rights and the Torah- When
our founding fathers meet our
forefathers.” We will also be
including a Hebrew language
component, and an
opportunity for our students to
empower themselves by
teaching to the class a topic
of Torah which they feel
connected to.
We will be providing breakfast
on Sunday mornings and on
occasion diner for the
weeknight class.
I am extremely excited for this
new program and I am
excited for our Rova students
to have such an amazing
opportunity.
PLEASE BRING ALL
SHAMOS TO THE OFFICE.

BETH SHOLOM YOUTH
NCSY
With the leadership of Rabbi Adam Aronov, we are
looking forward to another exciting and eventful year
for our youth. Our Shaar Tzion Rochester NCSY chapter
is getting ready to kick off the year with its annual BBQ
where we will be electing the upcoming chapter
board.
Our Rochester chapter will be hosting NCSY Fall convention on September 23rd-25th. We are extremely excited to schedule a Shabbat of programs
which will inspire and motivate both our
chapter and the upstate region to have
a year of success.
With the help of our regional advisors led
by Rachel Hoffman and our regional director Devorah Weinstock, we plan on
having a year filled with Torah learning,
Shabbat visitations and events, which will
give all of our kids a sense of Jewish identity and pride unmatched by any other
program.
We wish our Shaar Tzion chapter all the
Bracha and Hatzlacha that they should
excel in all their endeavors.
Jr. Congregation
Our Shul has been extremely fortunate to
have Tzippy Spanjer as our Jr. Congregation leader. Tzippy began leading Jr.
Congregation this past March and since
she has taken over the reins, our program has flourished. We are very excited
for the upcoming year.
Our Jr. Congregation program on Shabbat morning is from 10:30-11:30am. We
provide services for our Children k-7th,
teaching them the beauty of prayer, the
Parsha and we run many Shabbat activities. We invite our congregants to volunteer to tell stories to our kids. Whether it
be a Parsha Story, personal story or any
other story, kids love stories and you are
certainly welcome to share.
Babysitting
For our young toddlers, we will have available every
Shabbat and Yom Tov babysitting from 10am-11:30am.
We are looking forward for another wonderful year
where all ages of our Synagogue are given the opportunity to experience Jewish life at its fullest.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
10 Minute Mishnah
We will be entering our 5th year of 10 Minute Mishnah. After Mincha and Maariv, we have
maximized our time by studying the Mishnah for 10 minutes every evening. This year we will
continue to learn volume of Mishnah called Moed. Moed is the section of Mishnah which discusses the Jewish Holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn the deeper source for the
Holidays that we all love to celebrate with family and community.
Shabbat Afternoon Gemara
An hour before Mincha on every Shabbat we explore different Tractates in the Talmud. This
year we will be continuing Tractate Beitzah- which covers all laws pertaining to Yom Tov, the
Jewish festivals.
Daily Halacha
After Shacharit, on days when the Torah is not read, we learn laws of Prayer, Blessings, and Holidays. Our primary source is the Shulchan Aruch- Code of Jewish law, and the Mishnah Berurah
- a commentary of the Shulchan Aruch. It’s a wonderful way to start your day.

SISTERHOOD NEWS
We hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer!
We started the summer with a very successful Donor Dinner, where we honored our Thrift
Shop volunteers. We are very grateful to June Slavny, Helen Cohen, Bob David and all the
volunteers for so many hours of dedicated service to the Shul, We would also like to thank the
Donor Dinner committee for putting together such a wonderful event.
We would like to thank Sheryl Tatelman, Alice Palokoff and Anne Cherney for the beautiful
Father’s Day booklet that they prepared. The Mother’s and Father’s Day booklets always
make these occasions so meaningful for our Shul members.
In late June, some of our Book Club members attended a showing of the film “Me Before
You,” based on the book of the same title that we read this past year. Later this summer we
are planning a showing of the film “Woman in Gold,” based on the book Lady in Gold. If you
are interested in joining our Book Club, we’ll be selecting next year’s reading list soon. Please
email Tamar Fix at [email protected] with your contact information.
In mid-July, we hosted a fabulous Hat and Clothing Exchange in memory of BJ Yudelson, z”l.
The entire women’s community was invited to exchange hats, purses and gently worn
clothing. A silent auction was held with several of BJ’s beautiful hats. This was a wonderful
event and an important fundraiser for Sisterhood, and we thank Julian Yudelson for making
this possible.
The annual Rochester Red Wings game with Men’s Club is
being planned for later this summer. Please watch for more
information.
Plans are already being made for many Sisterhood events this
upcoming year. In the meantime, please have a great
summer!
If you have not yet paid your annual Sisterhood dues, please
be sure to do so. Dues are still only $20 and can be sent to:
Sisterhood Membership, c/o Anne Cherney, 161 Fair Oaks Ave,
Rochester, NY 14618.
We are looking for people to help out with our weekly Shabbat
Kiddushim or with Team Kiddushim. Please email Anne
Cherney: [email protected]. There are many
opportunities to become involved with Sisterhood, so please let
us know if you would like more information or if you have an
idea for a Sisterhood event. We would love to hear from you!
We continue to send our prayers and wishes for a Refuah
Shlaymah to our beloved Rabbi.

SATURDAY
People who cannot be home in time to receive Shabbat with the Congregation should formally exclude themselves. In no case, of course, should candles be lit after the latest time listed in the regular candle
lighting schedules.
Beginning Friday evenings, March 15th and for the duration of the summer months of long days, the Congregation prays regularly on Friday evenings at 7:00pm. This means that Kabbalat begins around
7:30pm. It is Halachically proper that the Congregation receive the Shabbat together at the same time. This means that families should light candles and receive Shabbat at the same time that the Congregation
prays Kabbalat Shabbat rather than waiting until the normal candle lighting time.*
