The 2016 Scott Skyhawks
Scott Skyhawks have new leader
By Terry Bartley
For Civitas Media
MADISON - The
Scott Skyhawks take
flight this year under
new leadership. Head
coach Shann Elkins
said that while there
have been some growing pains, he has
enjoyed getting to
know his team.
“For me, all these
guys are first year
players. I’m trying to
learn them and they’re
trying to learn me, it’s
an interesting mix,”
Elkins said.
Elkins said that
this interesting mix
has caused it to take
a bit more time to
determine the team’s
starting line-up, but he
is impressed with his
team’s attitude during
summer practice.
“We’re still trying to
figure out a few things
about some of our kids,
who can do what and
those sorts of things,
it’s a little early for
us to say, ‘this guy’s
gonna be a starter,’”
Elkins said, “I think
our attitude has been
great, I think they’ve
done everything we’ve
asked them to do, off
season and in season.”

During the off
season, Coach
Elkins said that
they conducted
interviews
with the team
members to see
what areas they
believed the team
could improve. The
consensus among the
team is that they need
stronger in-team leadership. Elkins is hoping
he can find it within
the returning seniors.
“Whether I like it
or whether I don’t
like it, every football
team that I’ve been
associated with, even
at the high school or
college level, for the
most part lives or dies
with senior leadership,” Elkins said, “All
my seniors really, as a
group, have wanted to
take that role and move
everybody forward.”
Elkins said that while
they are identifying
these leaders, he has
also been trying to
ensure that his players
understand how
much effort is
required for high
school play.
“We feel like
we’re progressing
in the right direction and we’ve
got a number
of seniors that’s been
through some battles.
We’re trying to let
them know that level
that you’ve got to bring
for practice,” Elkins
said.
Overall, Elkins is
pleased with what he
has been seeing from
his team and believes
they will be ready this
season.
“We’ve had some
really good practices,
still learning a few
things about how to
practice, but overall
we’ve done a pretty
good job of doing what
we need to do to get
ourselves prepared and
ready to go,” Elkins
said.
This year Elkins said
that this season, the
Skyhawks are focusing
on one team in particular.
“Hoover, that’s the
only one we’re concerned about now,
we’re going to get a
good test in the conference with Wayne, and
I think our kids are
excited about that, but
all eyes are right now
on Hoover.”
The budget cuts
across the board in
Boone County has
had some impact on
the Skyhawk football
team, areas that were
cut include reducing
the coaches pay and
delaying the ordering
of shoulder pads and
helmets, among other
things.
“We did lose an assistant coach, obviously
that hurts, and some of
these guys are doing it
for free and that’s a big
thing,” Elkins said.
However, Elkins said
this is a good opportunity for his coaching
staff and his team to
learn how to overcome
challenges.
“We can’t worry
about what happened
before or what’s gonna
happen after, we’ve
got to deal with what’s
going on now, clear

Mullins said Early can
get the job done.
“When you get a ninthgrader you don’t know if
he will be able to handle
the grind of high school
football,” he said. “But
he’s done a really good
job. They did a great
job at the middle school
teaching him. When you
get to high school there’s
so much more to learn
but he’s doing a great job
up until this point.”
Brandon Kinzer and
Daniel Browning are
Logan’s other QB’s.
“Daniel Browning has
also played some quarterback,” Mullins said. “He’s
a run/pass threat. He can
play a lot of positions. He
can play quarterback, fullback and wide receiver.
We have a couple of other
guys, too, that we can put
back there.”
Logan is deep at running back. Returning is
junior Devin Hensley,
who ran for 195 yards
last year.
“We’re really deep at
the skilled positions,”
Mullins said. “We have
Devin Hensley at tailback. He’s returning and
he’s a junior. He’s real
explosive and he’s a real
hard worker. There’s no
half speed for that guy.”
Daniel Browinng, who
ran for 144 yards and
scored a touchdown last
year, is also back.
“Daniel Browning can
also play fullback and
tailback,” Mullins said.
“He’s a great blocker from
the fullback position. He’s
very versatile.”
Sophomore Shawntez
Matthews may also see

some time at fullback.
“Shawntez Matthews is
also going to play some
at fullback,” Mullins said.
“He started as the Mike
linebacker pretty much
all of last year when Cody
Maynard went down.
He’s had one of the hardest working off-seasons
that I’ve ever had. He’s
in the top five. He’s probably added 25 pounds
of muscle. It’s almost
like we have got a new
player.”
Senior Tyler Browning, who saw most of his
time on defense last year,
could also get some carries.
“Tyler Browning is a
senior and is back,” Mullins said. “He’ll get some
carries back there. Jamal
Maynard
Minter
Minter will also take
some carries back there.
Michael Hall will also
take some carries and
will also play receiver.
He’s so fast. He was our
JV quarterback last year.
We also have Trice Boatwright, who is a senior.
He was right there with
Shawntez in the off-season working hard.”
Trey Jude, a sophomore gives the Wildcats
another option at running
back.
“Trey Jude is a sophomore and he’s back out,”
Mullins said. “He’ll get
some carries. He’s a big,
strong kid. David Early
will also carry the ball
some for us.”
In Coach Mullins’
system, many of Logan’s

running backs will also
split out in the slot or at
wide receiver, depending on the formation and
scheme.
“We have a lot of guys
that are running backs
that we will split out and
be wide receivers too,”
Mullins said. “Just about
everyone who is a running back will also be a
wide receiver.”
At wide receiver, senior
Jamal Minter is back

year, Minter reeled in
27 passes for 354 yards.
Top wideout Matthew
Cox, who had 466 yards
receiving and more than
1,000 yards rushing, has
been lost to graduation.
“At wide receiver,
it starts with Jamal
Minter,” Mullins said.
“He’s a three-year starter
and was an all-stater last
year. I don’t know how
anybody could be better.
That’s a lot of pressure to
put on a kid but I don’t
see how there could be
any better wide receiver
in this state. He’s got all
of the tools and blocks
well. He can jump up and
get the ball and he runs
good routes. Everything
you want out of a wide
receiver he is that.”
Newcomer and basketball player Braxton Goff
gives Logan another target at wideout.
“Braxton Goff came
out and he runs real fast,”
Mullins said. “He hasn’t
played since middle
school but it’s like he has
played every year. He’s so
physical too. I’ve watched
him play basketball too
and you just don’t realize
how fast he is too.”
Dino Noe, a Nigerian
national and another basketball player, is also out
for football and gives the
Wildcats another athletic
receiver.
“Dino Noe can go get
the ball,” Mullins said.
“He has done well for us
in practice. He looks pretty amazing out there.”
Senior Skyler Miller
also returns at WR. He
had nine catches for 66
yards and a touchdown
last year.
“Skyler Miller played
some last year and
nobody can question his
intestinal fortitude,” Mullins said.
Chuckie Felder, a
sophomore has also been
impressive during the
preseason.
“We also have Chuckie
Felder, who is a sophomore,” Mullins said.
“He’s a shifty little guy.
We’ve got about 10 or
12 that we can play out
there.”
On the offensive line,
senior Caleb McDonald is
a returning starter. However, McDonald was lost
in the preseason due to
a possible season-ending
knee injury. He started
every game for Logan on
the O-line last year and
was expected to start at
center.
“We’ve got a bunch of
guys who are competing
for those spots. We’re not
real seasoned up there
on the line,” Mullins
said. Everybody is pretty
equal. It’s going to be
interesting to see how it
works out because I don’t
know who is going to be
starting for us.”
Newcomer Elijah
Adkins and sophomore
Jordan Brinegar are also
fighting for starting spots
on the O-line.
“We have a new kid
who is coming out this
year in Elijah Adkins.
He’s a real hard worker
and is a real physical,
aggressive kid,” Mullins said. “We also have
Jordan Brinegar. He’s a
sophomore and played on
our JV team last year that
we really successful.”
Junior Musco Adams,
who stands 6-4 and
weighs in at 340 pounds,
gives Logan some college-type size up front.
“Musco Adams is also
back and he started in

Senior Chris Watkins
and sophomore Tyler
Mileto, give Logan some
depth in the trenches.
Watkins may play center after the McDonald
injury.
“We also have Chris
Watkins, who is a senior
and has been our kicker,”
Mullins said. “Now he’s
going to be coming in to
our offensive line. Tyler
Mileto is also back. He’s
a good sophomore and
a big, strong kid. He’s in
there fighting for a spot.”
Senior brothers David
and Cezar Cruz are also
fighting for playing time
on the line.
“David Cruz is a senior
and has played some on
the defensive line,” Mullins said. “Cezar Cruz is
his brother and he’s also
in there fighting for playing time too.”
DEFENSE
Almost all of Logan’s
offensive linemen will
have to flip over and play
on the D-line. Newcomer
and freshman Troy Cowhart could be one of the
leaders up front.
“All of the offensive
linemen are also going
to play on the D-line,”
Mullins said. “We have a
freshman, Troy Cowhart,
who is a great player
that no one really is talk-

ing about. David Early
is tremendous and you
never take anything away
from him in what a great
player he is. Troy, too,
is just about as good a
freshman as I’ve ever
had. He’s physical and
he doesn’t look like a
ninth-grader. He’s probably going to start on our
defensive line as a ninthgrader. That tells you all
you need to know.”
Adams also returns.
He had 27 tackles and a
fumble recovery last year.
Adkins, Kinzer, David
Cruz and newcomer
Chris Childers are also
pressing for playing time.
“Musco Adams also
started on the defensive
line,” Coach Mullins said.
“David Cruz also played
a lot last year. Elijah
Adkins will also play,
along with a new kid,
Chris Childers and Brandon Kinzer, our backup
quarterback, who has
really been doing well on
the defensive line. He’s a
big, strong kid and he’ll
get a lot of playing time
in there.”
Senior Cody Maynard,
who was injured in last
year’s opener against
Man, has made a comeback and is expected to
start at middle linebacker.
Matthews, Maynard’s
replacement last year,
also returns. He had 37
total tackles last year.

Having players return

that. Also having the

The 2016 Sherman Tide
Sherman Tide looks for wins
By Terry Bartley
For Civitas Media
SETH - The Sherman Tide football team
is planning on winning
games this year. After a
challenging season last
year, Head Coach J.D.
Fairchild said he believes
this could be their winning year.
“We’re just looking forward to winning games,
I’m not going to make
any predictions, but I
think it’s going to be a
little better, I think we’re
going to win some games
this year,” Fairchild said.
Fairchild said that this
year their schedule looks
more manageable then
it did last year. He feels
hopeful because The Tide
shouldn’t be facing any
more than one substantially larger school this
year.
“We’ve just got to get
some Ws here, it’s been
rough. Our schedule last
year was really tough,
we’ve gotten rid of some
of the better teams,
especially the AA teams
this year,” Fairchild said,
“We’ve lightened up
the schedule a bit and
it should be more conducive to getting some
wins.”
Fairchild said another
aspect that offers some
hope for a winning season is that they have a
number of returning play-
ers this year. Baily Kirk
will be returning as quarterback, Ben Salmons,
William Chirstian and
Tommy Harper will be
returning as running
back and Dillion Richman
will be returning as center, among a number of
other returning players.
He believes have this
slew of returning players
will give them the edge
they need in this upcoming season, as well as the
support of his coaching
staff.
“We have a lot of
people returning, everybody’s looking real good.
Everybody worked hard
in the off season, my
assistants do a wonderful
job, and they make my
job really easy,” Fairchild
said.
Fairchild said that one
of their biggest challenges in the pre-season was
adjusting to a new set of
practice rules set by the
West Virginia Secondary
School Activities Commission. The rules were
suggested last season,
but required this season.
The issue that the Tide
has been having trouble
with concerns the length
of practices.
“These new rules have
been a pain to deal with,
we’ve not been able to
have your normal two-adays with our kids. Three
hours between puts the
second session at 10:30

p.m. or 11:00 p.m. and
that’s been hard,” Fairchild said.
Another obstacle the
Sherman Tide is expecting to face this year
comes in the form of the
Boone County Schools
budget cuts. Fairchild
is concerned that the
team may have to pay
more for buses for away
games, which he said is
especially a concern considering they have some
pretty long-distance away
games this year.
However, in spite of all
of their challenges, Fairchild said he thinks the
pre-season practices have
been going well.
“We’ve helped the
schedule out a little bit
and things are going
well, everybody’s working hard,” Fairchild said,
“There’s a lot of kids that
have come out and really
contributed.”
The Tide’s first game
will be on August 26, at
home versus Tug Valley
High School.

for Mingo Central.

“In the secondary we
have a lot of guys who
are returning, guys like
Tyler Browning, who
has started the last 20
games for us,” Mullins
said. “We also have Trice
Boatwright, who has
been competing for time
in there. Trey Jude and
Michael Hall and others
too, such as Caleb Ding-
ess, who came here from
Madison Middle School,
who is a tremendous athlete, are also competing.
Jamal will also play back
there some.”
SPECIAL TEAMS
Watkins is back as
Logan’s kicker. He
made 6-of-8 of his PAT
attempts last year. He
missed on his only field
goal attempt.
Daniel Browning, Cowhart and Noe can also
kick. All four can also
punt.
“Chris Watkins is back
as our kicker,” Mullins
said. “Tyler Browning
and Daniel Browning are
our holders. Troy Cowhart can also kick well
as a freshman. Dino Noe
can also kick. We think
that we’ll be pretty solid
as far as special teams
go. All of those guys will
also be in competition as
the punter. Chris Watkins
punted for us last year
and he works really hard
and goes to camps in the
summer. Right now, he’s
the front-runner.”
SCHEDULE
Logan’s 2016 schedule
will be difficult with
Class AAA holdovers
Greenbrier East and John
Marshall.
The Cats have four
Cardinal Conference
games against Poca,
Chapmanville, Sissonville
and Scott.
Logan also has games
against Class AA schools
and former 3A teams Lincoln County, Point Pleasant and Oak Hill.
The season opener is
Aug. 25 at home against
Man, which is now a 2A
school as well.
“When you have Point
Pleasant on your schedule and they have guys
signing with LSU you
know it’s going to be
tough,” Mullins said. “We
also play Greenbrier East
and John Marshall who
are Triple-A teams. All of
those northern teams are
always good. We also play
some tough teams in the
Cardinal Conference. We
have a lot of tough teams
on our schedule. We’re
going to have to play well
every week if we want to
have a successful year.”

Kentucky hopes for bowl bid
AP Sports Writer
LEXINGTON, Ky.
(AP) — Two straight
years coming up short
of a bowl bid have the
Kentucky Wildcats eager
to seize the opportunity
this season.
Reaching the six-win
threshold, though, won’t
be an easy task after a
pair of 5-7 seasons.
The schedule is more
well-balanced than in the
past, and the backload
of games against highlyregarded opponents may
pave the way for that
bowl-eligible sixth win.
“It gets frustrating, but
you can’t dwell on the
past,” Kentucky running
back Stanley “Boom”
Williams said. “We made
some critical mistakes
(in the past) that cost us,
but that’s what we have
the offseason (for), so
we can learn from those
mistakes and can better
ourselves and not make
the same mistakes this
year.”
Kentucky’s offense will
look different in many
ways.
Sophomore Drew
Barker is now the
quarterback in place of
Patrick Towles, who has
transferred to Boston
College. Calmer has
overcome several offfield incidents early in
his career, and looks to
build off a strong spring
that earned the starting
job.
“I’ve always been kind
of a calm person,” said
Barker, who will run a
new pro-style offense.
“I haven’t gotten too up
or too down and I’m not
really an emotional person. I can see that, but
sometimes you have to
kick it up into a different
gear. That’s something
I have been working on
for sure.”
With nine returning
starters on offense and
15 back overall, the
Wildcats believe they
have the personnel and
experience to come away
with a winning season.
They even have the
facilities in place — a
$45 million training
center that might put
some NFL complexes to
shame.
“I really believe this
team has what it takes
physically and mentally
to take us to the next
level,” coach Mark
Stoops said. “We’re up
for the challenge.”
Here’s what to look for:
DEEP BACKFIELD:
Kentucky returns three
running backs who
rushed for at least 318
yards last season, including speedy team-leader
Williams (855 yards, six
touchdowns). Also back
are Jojo Kemp (555, six
TDs) and Mikel Horton
(318, three TDs).
OVERHAULED
STAFF: The Wildcats
have five new assistants:
offensive coordinator
Eddie Gran; co-coordinator and quarterbacks
coach Darin Hinshaw;
Lamar Thomas (receivers); Matt House (special teams) and Steve
Clinkscale (defensive
backs). Gran, Hinshaw
and Clinkscale previously worked together at
Cincinnati.
SEASON OPENER:
Kyle Lovern/WDN Photo
Belfry senior Cameron Catron is shown gaining yardage in a a game last season. Catron is also one of the Pirate’s top defensive players.
Kentucky’s Sept. 3
matchup against Southern Mississippi is important for reasons beyond
starting well. With the
SEC opener looming
the following week at
Florida, the Wildcats
need this win to avoid a
possible 0-2 start along
with showing they’re
headed in the right direction. USM is coming off
a bowl appearance and
debuts offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson,
who held the same job at
Kentucky last season.
KEY GAMES: Kentucky plays a nationallytelevised game at Florida
on Sept. 10 and travels
to defending national
champion Alabama on
Oct. 1. A tough threegame stretch against
SEC East foes features
a Nov. 5 home contest
Mark Stoops
against Georgia sandwiched between road
games at Missouri (Oct.
29) and division favorite
Tennessee (Nov. 12).
PREDICTION:
Despite another rugged
schedule, the Wildcats
have enough experience
to win their non-conference games and get
enough division victories
to earn their first bowl
bid since 2010.

Van Bulldogs work toward playoffs
By Terry Bartley
For Civitas Media
VAN - Coming strong
off of a playoff year, the
Van High School Bulldogs expect another
successful year. Head
Coach Steve Price said
he believes they may
once again be headed
to the playoffs.
“Coming off a playoff
year, I feel pretty good.
Ya’ know every coach
sets a goal at the beginning of every year to
get to playoffs that year
and that’s not beyond
our reach this year,”
Price said.
Price said this is
possible because this
year his team is just
as strong as it was last
year. He said there are
many returning players, which sets them up
for more success this
season.
“It’s not a rebuilding
year, we’ve got plenty
of depth returning and
guys that took a lot
of reps over the last
couple of years,” Price
said.
Price said he is looking forward to this
year, because there is
quite a bit of experience returning to the
team. He said he has
even retained some of
his star players.
“We’ve got a two-year
starter and tail back
returning, Brady Grant
that ran for over 3,000
yards his first two
years,” Price said.

While other teams
in Boone County have
struggled with the
reduced budget, Price
said his team shouldn’t
see a difference and
he isn’t sweating the
reduced salary.
“Football is a self-supporting sport, the budget came from personnel, but any coach will

Price said he is proud
of the work his team
has accomplished over
the past two years, and
he points to that year
as a turning point.
“Two years ago we
had a bunch of sophomores and freshmen on
the field, started the
season 0-4, ended up
5-5 and it was a really
good building point for
us,” Price said.
Now Price said his
team is looking forward
to being one of the few
teams in Van Bulldog
history to pull off going
to the playoffs twice.
“I think these guys
now want to be that
first time since the
92-93 team to make the

last season, but has been
a force the last couple of
years. Lester was a first
team Class AA All-State
and all-conference defensive player, but stepped
in as a running back
last year due to injuries.
“Hunt is a very good kid,”
Kinder said. “He runs
hard and he could always
run over people. But this
year we need him to play
defense.”
“Anytime other coaches
talk about Mingo Central, they mention No.
7,” Kinder said of Lester,
who is a 4-year starter.
“He got forced into playing early as a freshmen
and has gotten better
and better. He should
be the leader of our
defense.”
“The reason we will
be better offensively is
because of Jeremy Dillon,” Kinder said. “I
didn’t have a clue he was
coming and all of a sudden he popped up – and I
said ‘man - that is pretty
good for me in my last
year coaching.’ ”
A junior, Dillon (6-4,
190 lbs.) will man the
quarterback position.
Dillon was a first team
all-state performer as
a freshman and sophomore at Tug Valley. He
played several positions
including receiver, running back, linebacker and
defensive end. Dillon will
also be a key on defense
for the Miners.
“He is an athlete,”
Kinder said. “He can
throw the football. He
can run and do a lot of
things. He is known for
his defensive play, but he
is learning our offense.
We want to play fast and

now – we can match up
with them better,” Kinder
added.
Kinder said he has
several other players competing for playing time
on the line - Adam Starr,
Mikey Hall and Zack
Yates.
Others vying for playing time at wide receiver
with Grimmett, Hatfield
and Sheppard are Lee
Chafin, Thomas Harmon,
Devin Turner and Allen
Richards.
Kinder and his staff
expect several other
younger players to
improve and earn playing
time as the season progresses.
Kinder will be assisted
by Fields, Sammons,
Terry Harrison, Ashton
Cline, Logan Lester,
Bob Huff and Jacob Staton. Rick Jackson is the
equipment manager and
Wes Wilson assists equipment and other aspects at
Buck Harless Stadium.
What does Kinder
expect from the Miners
this season?
“I expect us to play
hard because their attitude has really changed
in the last three years,”
Kinder said, motioning
with his hands. “We
have better players and
they have worked hard in
the weight room.”
“These kids have
bought into the system.
Most of them come to
our summer practices,”
Kinder concluded. “We
should be able to compete
with anyone we play.”

Another player Kinder
mentioned on defense is
senior Isaac Fox (5-11,
190 lbs.) “He is another
outside linebacker who
can play cornerback,”
Kinder added.
“Fox has been a starter
for us since the 9th
grade.”
“We have Dalton Fields
(junior, 5-9, 235 lbs.)
who should have been
playing defense last year.
He called the plays for
us on the offensive line
last year on our blocking schemes,” Kinder
said. “He is going to be
an inside linebacker this
year.”
“We also have junior
Kaleb Hurley (6-2, 195

as anyone we have on
defense,” Kinder added.
“He can flat out hit you
and he is tough. He
started at guard last year.
We moved him to defense
and he played hard. We
have to keep him in
there.”
“We have real good linebackers. In the secondary
we have Dalton Sheppard,
who has been one of
our best defensive backs
since I’ve been here. He is
a good all-around player,”
Kinder said.
On offensive, Kinder
praised Robbie Daniels
as the “best center in our
conference.” He is 6-2,

for an offensive

on defense for the Miners.
“We have big Zack

sides of the ball.”
“On defense we want
to get after them. We
want to blitz and we can’t
sit back on our heels,”
Kinder said. “We have to
get to the point where we
have that certain toughness.”
Speedy freshman Drew
Hatfield will be one of
seven wide receivers the
Miners have available on
offense, but he is also
the back-up quarterback.
Hatfield was the Mingo
County MVP in the
middle school ranks the
past couple of seasons.
“We won’t care one bit to
put Drew in at quarterback,” Kinder said of the
talented freshman. “Joey
worked with him during
the summer period. Josh
(Sammons) has worked
with both Drew and Jeremy. Both of them are
smart kids.”
Kinder is pleased to
have depth at quarterback, which has not been
the case the past few
seasons.
Seniors Daniel Buchanan (6-6, 280 lbs.) and
Tyler Grimmett (6-4, 210
lbs.) are two capable targets. Buchanan is a tight
end and defensive end,
but may also be used at
tackle some this season.
He has gotten several D-1
offers to play college football. “By the end of the
year, he was playing as
good as anyone,” Kinder
said of his big end.
Grimmett was one of
the top receivers in the
Cardinal Conference last
year and should continue
that success this season.
He is also getting attention from several colleges.
He has been hampered
by nagging injuries early
in practice, but should be
ready to go by the start of
the season. “He runs well
and he’ll hit you,” Kinder
said of Grimmett.

The 2016 Chapmanville Regional High School football team, coaching staff and cheerleaders.
Tigers turning the Dial this season
[email protected]
CHAPMANVILLE —
The last 12 years, George
Barker helped transform
the Chapmanville football
program into a team that
not just hoped to make it
to the playoffs but a team
that expected to.
Barker led Chapmanville Regional High
School to six Class AA
playoff appearances,
including last year’s
home post-season berth
— only the second ever
home playoff game for
the Tigers in their history.
Chapmanville saw its
season come to a close
at 7-4 with the 42-14 loss
to Robert C. Byrd on the
Tiger Stadium Field Turf.
It also ended up being
Coach Barker’s last game
at the helm of the Tigers.
Barker has stayed on
as the school’s Athletic
Director and has handed
over the headsets to former assistant coach and
Offensive Coordinator
Rob Dial.
Dial, a Chapmanville
assistant coach from
1999-2012, hopes to keep
the success going this fall
in his first season.
Chapmanville was hit
hard by graduation with
the losses of such players as quarterback Alex
Berry (2,345 passing
yards, 31 TDs), recordbreaking wideout Jacob
Dingess, running back/
linebacker/kicker Tanner Dillon (997 rushing
yards, 13 TDs), linemen
Ricky Combs and Andy
Bias and almost a dozen
other players.
The Tigers will need to
find players to step into
those shoes.
“First and foremost, we
have to get better each
and every day,” Dial said.
“On the football field
we’re going to get better or we’re going to get
worse and a lot of that
is based on effort and
attitude. That’s where
it’s at with us. We have
to get better each and
every day. We’re not good
enough to be complacent.
We have to work and
have that blue collar mentality to really push to get
better.”
Chapmanville, though,
just as in year’s past,
hope to be in the playoff
equation at season’s end.
“Every team in this
state has the goal at the
very least at making
the playoffs,” Dial said.
“Here at Chapmanville
Regional High School
we want to make it to
the playoffs every year.
I’m not concerned with
preseason polls and what
the experts predict. I
wan’t us to continue to
work hard to get better
every day. Then when the
season ends after 10 ballgames our body of work
will be good enough for
us to play an 11th game.
“Once you get into the
playoffs, and Chapmanville is a great example
of that in year’s past.
Depending on how the
brackets fall, we’re going
to have an opportunity
to do something special
in the playoffs if we are
fortunate enough to get
there.”
OFFENSE
With the graduation of
three-year starter Berry
at QB the Tigers will turn
to junior Adam Vance.
“Adam played on
defense last year and was
a backup to Alex Berry,”
Dial said. “He’s a junior.
He’s got multiple years in
our system. He was also
a quarterback in middle
school. For us, it begins
with Adam. He has a
good grasp of what we
C&W
CARPET HOUSE, INC.

835 CENTRAL AVENUE
SOUTH WILLIAMSON, KY
want offensively. He has
all of the intangibles of
knowing where to throw
the ball, who to read and
has all of the physical
attributes.”
Dial said Vance has all
the tools to step in and
have a fine season.
“He also has some
natural leadership qualities,” said. “That’s something that you really need
out of that quarterback
position. He’s the guy
that’s going to have the
ball in his hands every
single play. He’s going
to be the guy that has
to know where all 11
guys are going to go and
what to do. He has those
attributes and we’re looking for some really good
things out of Adam.”
Vance’s backup quarterbacks are sophomore
Sam Craddock, a lefty,
and freshman Chase
Berry, the younger
brother to Alex Berry.
The younger Berry was
the QB at Chapmanville
Middle School last year.
Craddock was the Tigers’
JV quarterback last year.
Senior Austin Butcher
may play a number of
positions for the Tigers
whether it be quarterback, running back,
receiver or linebacker on
defense.
“Austin Butcher is a
utility player for us,” Dial
said. “He’s going to play
some quarterback, some
running back and some at
receiver. Austin is a guy
that we want to use in a
lot of different roles and
in a lot of different ways.
He’s an athlete and he’s
got good speed and good
size.”
Chapmanville has an
outstanding skilled position player in versatile
junior Dylan Smith, who
will likely split time at
running back and at wide
receiver. Last year. Smith
coach Rob Dial Butcher
Vance
had 47 rushes for 357
yards and four TDs and
also had 32 catches for
584 yards and eight more
scores.
“In the backfield, we
return Dylan Smith,”
Dial said. “He started for
us last year. He will also
continue to split out and
play receiver as well. We
as coaches have to find
ways to get Dylan the ball
because he is going to be
a very valuable player for
us. He’s a game changer
and he’s someone that
can make something happen when he has the ball
in his hands. We’re excited about his potential.
He’s worked phenomenally hard in the off-season
in the weight room. He’s
got a real good attitude.”
CRHS also has a
good back in newcomer
Tristan Browning, a
senior, who transferred
from Lincoln County.
“He’s not overly physical in size, however, he
has a very hard, aggressive running style and
he has speed when he
breaks out in the open.
We’re really looking for
big things from Tristan,”
Dial said.
Senior Ryan Craddock,
who played mostly on
defense last year, may
also see time in the backfield.
“He’s a throwback player. He’s got a more true
fullback type of mentality
to him. He’s also going
to play some inside linebacker for us,” Dial said.
Sophomore Brennan
Williams also figures into
the mix at running back.
At wide receiver, senior
Billy Sheppard expects
to get the lion’s share
of passes come his way.
Last year, Sheppard came
on strong with 24 catches
for 289 yards and three
TDs.
“At receiver, Billy Sheppard returns. Billy had a
good year last year and
as the year progressed
he got better,” Dial said.
“In the off-season he was
in the weight room every
day. He’s got a lot of leadership abilities and characteristics about him. He
wants to see the team
work hard and wants to
see the team do well.
Billy’s the kind of guy
that will sacrifice and will
play wherever you need
him to play. He’s a possession receiver and we
look for a big year out of
him. He does a good job
of getting open in one-onone man coverage. He’s
also good at finding out
where the hole is on zone
defense. He’s a real solid
reliable guy for us.”
Juniors Peyton Hensley and Cade Elkins are
other top targets at WR.
Sophomore Dillon Renniger and junior Robert
Seigman give CRHS
added depth at wideout.
“Dillon Renniger is
going to play a lot on
defense but he could also
help us on the offensive
side,” Dial said. “The
same thing goes for Robert Seigman. Another
guy who is new to our
program who took a couple of years off is Hunter
Long. We’re excited to
see Hunter back out. We
just think that he needs
to be patient and let his
Willis
Craddock
body get
re-adjusted
to football.
I think that
we can see
Hunter
Bigley
step in at
the X or Y
position and see some
significant playing time.”
Devin Vance and Ethan
Ferrell would also see
time at wide receiver.
On the offensive line,
junior starters Corey
McGraw and Evan Willis are back. Dial said,
however, Willis is being
moved from center to
guard.
“Our success is going
to be based upon on how
good that we are going
to be up front,” Dial said.
“We have two starters
back in Corey McGraw
and Evan Willis. We are
expecting them to lead
us up front. Evan was our
center last year but he’s
going to be a guard. He’s
going to back up at center. Corey is going to be
one of our tackles. Both
are extremly hard working young men. They are
‘Yes sir, no sir’ kids. They
are not going to back
talk. You can get on them
and they are going to get
better.”
Junior Hunter Adkins
is also fighting for a starting spot on the offensive
line.
“Hunter Adkins is a
great kid,” Dial said.
“He’s got a good attitude
and is very coachable.
He’s short in stature
but you kind of like that
sometimes for a center.
We think Hunter is ready

At running back, senior
Logan Presley returns
along with Derick Meridith, another senior.
Sophomore Pat Finley
and juniors James Watts
and Jonathan Johnson
also expect to get a bulk
of the carries.
Senior Brian Campbell
and junior Trey Smith
are two of the Rebels’ top
wide receivers.
“We’ve got some weapons and we’ve got some
talent,” Smith said. “It’s
just going to be a matter of putting this back
together and us settling
in and trying to make
another run.”
Cameron Nichols, a
senior, returns on Tolsia’s
experienced offensive
line at right guard. He’s
been a starter since his
freshman year.
At center, senior newcomer Dusty Stacy is
expected the start.
Wyatt Dillon, a senior
and tight end, has been
converted into an offensive guard.
Sophomore Brent Setser is expected to nail
down the left tackle spot
and defend the Tolsia
quarterback’s blind side.
DEFENSE
On the defensive line,
many of Tolsia’s offensive
linemen will flip over on
the other side of the ball
to play Iron Man football.
Tolsia lost all four linebackers and two in the
secondary to graduation,
Smith said.
“All of those kids will
have to be replaced but
up front we lost nobody,”
Smith added. “Hopefully
our offensive and defensive linemen will be one
Jennifer McKinney
of the strengths of our
team.”
Returning starters
Campbell and Presley are
expected to lead the Rebels in the secondary.
“They are really the
only two back there that
have any experience,”
Smith said. “We’re going
to move Campbell from
corner to free safety.”
Trey Smith and Johnson and sophomore
Devon Crum are also
projected to play in the
secondary.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Tolsia heads into the
season not having a true
place-kicker.
The punter position is
also for the taking.
“We’re not like a lot of
schools that can just go

don’t have that (a soccer team) and hopefully
never. If that happens
then football is over with.
That’s what is happening
with schools right now.
When they get soccer
football is over.”
SCHEDULE
Despite being Single-A
again, Tolsia will have a
very tough schedule with
some Class AA holdovers
from the Cardinal Conference such as Wayne,
Mingo Central and Scott
as well as a rematch with
Class AAA Kentucky
school Boyd County and
Class A powerhouse Williamstown.
The Boyd Couty Lions
handed Tolsia its only
regular season defeat a
year ago.
Tolsia only has a ninegame schedule.
“We probably have
the toughest schedule in
Single-A,” Smith said.
“We’re looking at three
Single-As on our schedule, five Double-As and

his team can have another successful season.

The 2016 Belfry Pirates
Pirates looking for 4th state title
GOODY, Ky. – The
name of the game is
football. In the Class
AAA scene in the Bluegrass State, one team
has held the championship trophy over their
heads for the last
three years - Belfry High School!
The Belfry
Pirates have been
competing for the
top spot for six
Coach
years in a row.
They have been
the state champions
since 2013 in ClassAAA and state runnerups since 2010 before
that. The Pirates have
continuously charged
forward and bested
their opponents for the
better part of a decade.
If you don’t think it
can get any better than
that then stay tuned for
this season. Pond Creek
Nation has already
hinted that this could be
the best team yet, and
many do not think they
are wrong.
The Pirates have a
special senior class that
will return for one last
year. They have returning runners like Andrew
Fletcher (2015 championship game
MVP) and Derek
Wellman. Veteran
quarterback Noah
Corbett will take
the reins again.
The offensive line
is at the top of
their game, and
the defense has plenty
of players ready to step
up and take the place
of the seniors who have
graduated.
Veteran Coach Phillip Haywood believes
that the biggest threat
to winning is a player’s
personal attitude. “It’s
great to have high
expectations and we
have always had that
in our program. It is
expected around here
but what I continually
remind my kids that
you can’t look at the big
picture until you look
at today. We have to
stay focused and take
everything day by day,
week by week. If you
start focusing too far
down the road you can
be beaten today,” said
Coach Haywood.
The spotlight is somewhere the Belfry Pirates
are extremely familiar
with. The senior class
that will be competing
for their fourth state
championship in a row
was also the group that
began the middle school
tradition of winning
the state championship. The Pirates have
become the program
that is emulated by
programs around them
even down to the youngest little league team.
Coach Haywood said he
is thrilled to have programs underneath his
that help in such a way.
Coach Haywood said,
“We have always had
good continuity with
our coaches on the middle school and junior
league levels. They lay
the foundation for us by
running our program
and teaching the kids at
an early age what they
will need in the future.
I wish them all the luck
this season and appreciate all of the fine work
that they do.
The Belfry Middle
School Football Team
will be contending for
their fifth state championship this season.
The Pirates have
a reputation of not
rebuilding, but reloading. While other programs take time off to
build up their over-all
team knowledge on the
system they will run,
the Pirates have players
waiting for their chance
to prove themselves.
This was seen last season when Noah Corbett
was forced to miss some
time and freshman quarterback Avery Browning
stepped in and continued the Pirates on their
quest for glory.
The Pirates do have
spots that are open
this season due to the
graduation on senior
stars. Coach Haywood
said the competition
for those positions is in
full-swing.
Xondre Willis was
the Pirates break away
back last season. Willis finished his senior
season with 1,339
yards on only 103 rushing attempts with 16
rushing touchdowns.
Coach Haywood mentioned three players he
believes are showing
the most promise at the
position so far. Taveon
Hunter, Justin Adkins,
and Devin Varney are
the three players Coach
Haywood mentioned as
the front runners for the
position in addition to
returning runner Cameron Catron.
“All of those guys
have practiced at that
position and all of them
have taken some snaps
there. I believe it will
all shake out, we may
end up having three or
four running backs like

offense around him during the
2016 season.
The Panthers offense is anything but conventional and
coach Clusky said they will
adapt to their players skill set.
Looking to get some playing
time this year will be Noah
Lucas, Levi Davis, Chandler
Pack, and Jared Farley to name
a few. The Panthers lost a senior
class that many have called “the
most winning class to ever come
through Tug Valley.”
This year’s junior class will
have to fill in where Phillip
Lucas, Corbin Oliver, and Calvin
Blankenship left off.
Tug Valley will use a multitude of offensive sets during the
2016 season to best opposing
defenses. The wing-T, pro-I,
and spread are just a few of the
formations the Panthers will
utilize. Pack and Farley will
be working from the tight end
position this year. Lucas and
Dawson Elia will be carrying
the running workload. Working
the outsides will be Davis, Kyle
Vance, and Zach Samuel.
The schedule this year will be
a tough one for the Panthers.
Coach Clusky said, “We have a
good tough schedule. Sherman
will be much improved this year
and they start it off. Meadow
Bridge is always a playoff team,
Van was a playoff team last year,
Tolsia was state runner up in
Class-AA last year, and Buffalo
is a top four team in Class-A.
That is a pretty tough six weeks.
Mount View has a lot of returning skill players and Man is
always Man.”
The Panthers are scheduled
to kick off the season on August
26, on the road at Sherman at
7:30 p.m. The big game for the
Panthers will be the season ending match-up against the Man
High Hillbillies. Last season the
Panthers and Hillbillies played
in a double overtime battle that
ended in a two point conversion
loss at 14-12 for the Panthers.
Tug Valley returned in the first
round of the Class-A playoffs to
beat Man 38-28 before losing to
Moorefield in the next round.
The Hillbillies lost some seniors
as well but Panthers fans will
have to wait until October 28,
to see the two teams square off
again.
Clusky is assisted by Justin
Crawford, Tyler Hodge and Joey
Childers. The trainer is Joey
Carey.

The 2016 Man High School football team.
Billies have work cut out in 2A
By Jerry Fekete
Banner Correspondent
MAN — The Man
High School football
team will have their
work cut out this season.
The
Hillbillies, after
competing
more than
a decade
as a Class
A school,
Arms
return to
the Double-A ranks.
Several starters have
graduated as well,
including four-year allstate quarterback John
Thomas Keffer.
Man’s schedule has
also been beefed up as
the Billies have added
Class AA powerhouse
Bluefield and Point
Pleasant, a former
Triple-A power, which
has dropped to 2A.
The Billies, though,
are moving forward
and so far practices
have gone very well for
Man, which opens the
season on Thursday,
Aug. 25 at county rival
Logan.
Man reached the
Class A playoffs in
each of the last three
seasons, including
last year when the Billies lost 38-28 to Tug
Valley in the opening
round to close out with
an 8-3 record.
Veteran head coach
Harvey Arms returns
for the Billies.
“First of all, we
have got a pretty good
turnout,” Arms said.
“We’ve got 46 kids out
at this point. We lost
13 seniors and most of
them were starters and
first line players. And
now we’ve got to determine who is going to
start in all those places
left.”
OFFENSE
Replacing Keffer at
quarterback is first and
foremost in Man’s concerns.
The All-State Keffer had a remarkable
career for the Billies.
Last year, completed
113-of-191 passes for
1,730 yards with 27
touchdowns and six
interceptions for the
Billies. He was also a
threat to run the ball
as he carried the pigskin 87 times for 223
yards and scored nine
touchdowns.
Sophomore Zach
Cook and newcomer
Cameron Simpson are
battling for the quarterback job with three
others.
Cook, a former QB
at Man Middle School,
saw very limited action
last year under center
for Man. He didn’t
have any pass attempts
and ran with the ball
twice for a net zero
yards.
“Right now the competition is still strong
on all those spots,”
Arms said. “We’ve got
five kids trying out for
quarterback which is
a better situation than
I have been here In all
of my time. We have
struggled to have two
quarterbacks and now
we have five competing here. They are all
pretty even in skills
and we will look at the
next two scrimmages
and see who is going
to step up with leadership and be the leader
of the team.”
In the backfield, Man
has experience with
Dustin McCoy, Seth
Chapman and Jake
Frye.
McCoy, a senior, ran
92 times for 548 yards
and scored two touchdowns. Frye, also a
senior, rushed for 239
yards on 46 carries and
scored four TDs. Chapman is also a senior.
Last year’s top
rusher, Jace Duba, has
graduated. He ran for
699 yards a year ago
on 139 rushes and
scored seven touchdowns.
“In our backfield,
we’ve got some experience there with Dustin
McCoy, who played a
lot and Seth Chapman
played some and Jake
Frye played some as
well,” Arms said. “It
looks like we are going
to have some good
young backs. We have
some freshmen guys
who are looking good.”
At wide receiver,
senior Matt Sanders
is Man’s top returnee.
Last year, Sanders
caught 29 passes for
471 yards and scored
eight touchdowns.
Man’s top receiver
last year, First-Team
All-State wideout Ross
Osborne, has graduated. He reeled in 67
passes for 971 yards
and 15 TDs last year.
Also back for Man at
wide receiver is junior
Trey Whitt who had
a pair of catches last
year. Man will also
look to senior Nick
Collins at receiver.
“We’ve got Matt
Sanders and Trey
Whitt back and they
played quite a bit last
year,” Arms said. “Nick
Collins is working hard
at tight end. He played
some receiver last
year. We also got some
good young people that
don’t have the experience and as we go we
hope to develop them
and have a little bit
more depth there.”
The good news
for the Billies is that
Man has some experience on the offensive
line. Seniors Jacob
Asbury, Austin Bragg
and Kayne Brown and
junior D.J. Browning,
all return.
“Up front, we’ve got
some experienced people in Kayne Brown,
D.J. Browning, Jacob
Asbury, Austin Bragg
and Steve Ramey,”
Arms said. “All of
those played with the
Brown
Simpson
varsity and played JV
ball, so we do have
some experience up
front. Our problem
up front will be with
depth because the
other kids don’t have
the experience. At this
point it looks like we
got some pretty decent
skilled people. We’ve
got to see what they
look like when we get
to pads and full contact.”
DEFENSE
On the Billies’
defensive line, Brown,
Bragg, Collins, Frye,
Asbury, Browning,
William Osborne, Nick
Vance, Blake Griffin
and Levi Davis are
expected to battle for
playing time.
Tyler Blair, Seth
Chapman, Dustin
McCoy, Seth Osborne,
Brock Muncy and
Dylan Morris are
Man’s linebackers.
In the secondary,
Sanders, Whitt, Buren
Maynor, Kyle Browning, Daniel Browning
and Chase Harvey are
the leaders.
SPECIAL TEAMS
Daniel Browning
appears to have the
nod as Man’s kicker.
“We are working on
that,” Arms said of his
special teams. “We’ve
got a kid here, I don’t
know if he played any
soccer, but he is a soccer style kicker in Daniel Browning. He looks
pretty good now so we
will keep working with
him.”
SCHEDULE
Man will play a
tough schedule with
the addition of Point
Pleasant, Bluefield and
Lincoln County, a 2A
school and former 3A
team.
Man is scheduled
to host Bluefield and
D. Browning
McCoy
Point Pleasant in backto-back weeks on October 14 and 21.
Bluefield went 9-2
last year, beating
Weir 32-13 in the first
round of the Class AA
playoffs before falling
35-22 to Mingo Central
in the state quarterfinals.
Man and Bluefield
last played each other
in the early 2000s.
Man ended up being
the cutoff team in
the WVSSAC’s most
recent realignment,
which was complete in
December.
As several schools
dropped from Class
AAA to 2A and from
Double-A to Single-A,
Man High School was
the only school in the
state to be raised in
classification.
While Lincoln County has struggled for
years in football since
the school was formed
after consolidation,
Point Pleasant has
Man’s Matt Sanders (21) runs with the ball after intercepting a
pass in a game last season.
Chapman
been a Class AAA and
2A state powerhouse,
sporting a 54-7 record
the last five years.
The Big Blacks,
coached by David
Darst, were 12-1 this
past fall in Point Pleasant’s last year as a
Triple-A school. Point
won its first 12 games,
including a 10-0 regular season and playoff
wins over Musselman
(54-14) and Huntington (49-0) before falling to Wheeling Park
(35-14) in the Class
AAA state semifinals.
The Billies are slated
to open the 2016 season on Aug. 25 at
Logan. It will be the
first time Man and
Logan have played in
the same classification
in years. Man is also a
former Triple-A school.
Logan is dropping to
2A status this fall.
Man then goes to
Class A Mount View

The 2016 Wyoming East Warriors open the season at home on August 26 against Mingo Central.
Wyoming East: Looking for improvement
By John Conley
[email protected]
With most of his
starters back on both
sides of the ball, Wyoming East coach Donald Jewell is looking for
improvement.
“They don’t want
3-7,” Jewell said, referring to his team’s 2015
record. “And they know
I don’t want 3-7.”
East lost its first five
games last season, won
three straight and then
fell in the last two.
Jewell likes the
enthuasiasm this year’s
team has shown.
“They have worked
really, really hard in the
weight room,” he said.
“Joel Cannady (a senior
lineman) has gone from
(benching) 305 to 405.
(Running back) Uriah
Adkins worked on his
quickness.”
“We have seen the
strength and quickness
come into play in practice,” Jewell said. “But
we’ll see what happens
in the scrimmages.”
While his team will
stick with the double
wing when it has the
ball, “we will spread it
out a lot more,” Jewell
commented. “We’ll put
them five or six more
yards out.
“We’ll still run the
same plays,” he added.
What he is looking
for is better execution.
“Teams stuffed the
box last year and it
killed us,” the coach
noted. “Sometimes
they would put 10 in
the box.”
A big, experienced
offensive line includes
center Adam Compton.
“He’s worked hard,”
said Jewell. “He knows
he’s got one job, and
that’s get the ball to the
quarterback.
Right guard Austin
Tilley and left guard
Cannady make the
Warriors big up front at
280, 325 and 332.
The tackles are Matt
Cook and Tyler Hagy.
“They’re about the
same size and same
type of player,” said
Jewell. “We hope we’ll
have a lot more aggressivness. We want to
get off the ball quick
and push blocks down
field.”
Senior Hunter Hall is
back at quarterback.
“He’s worked hard
on his passing,” Jewell
stated.
Uriah Adkins was the
team’s top rusher last
season. “Hopefully, if
we can spread defenses
out, he can get some

good yardage,” the
coach remarked.
Running backs Zack
Raye and Jake Cannady
will be on either side of
Adkins.
“I like their work
ethic,” the coach said.
Tanner Hall and
Ethan Hatfield will play
at wide receiver. Logan
Davidson and Tyler
Bradford will see time
there as well.
Others likely to play
at times on the offense
are Kyle Clay and
Ethan Francis.
Others who could
play in the backfield
are Michael Elkins,
who will back up
Adkins, and Evan Preece, who played wide
receiver last year.
Jewell says he is looking for greater consistency from the offense.
“Last year we would
move the ball on one
series and then not do
anything on the next
three or four possessions,” he recalled.
The defense will
operate from a 4-4 formation.
“We’re big in the
middle and quick on
the ends,” Jewell commented. “We’re trying
to keep (the defense)
simple.”
The defensive ends
are Christian Weis,
Matt Cook and Tyler
Hagy.
Ethan Francis will be
one tackle. The other
will alternate between
Tilley and Joel Can-
nady.
Junior Christian Ross
may also get to play.
Inside linebackers are
Brody Jenkins and Kyle
Clay.
Michael Elkins and
Josh Simmons are also
in the mix.
Outside linebackers
are Zack Raye and Jake
Cannady. Adkins could
be used there as well,
although Jewell says he
prefers to keep him on
offense only.
Contending at the
corner are Ethan Hatfield, Evan Preece and
Hunter Hall.
“Hunter is quick and
has good hands and
wants to play,” the
coach said.
Tanner Hall and
Ethan Day will also get
time at the corner.
Battling for a spot at
safety are Logan Davidson, Tyler Bradford and
Gage Bailey.
Jewell says his
defense is a veteran
crew. “They were all
out there last year and
they got a lot of playing
time,” he observed.
The coach says the
upper classmen should
have thier eyes on the
freshmen.
“I’ve got some good
little freshmen and
they want to play some
ball,” he said.
James Snuffer, a
sophomore, is the kicker and punter. He was
10-11 on extra pointss
last year.

West Virginia Mountaineers preview
Tries to fill many
holes on defense
in 2016
By John Raby
AP Sports Writer
Big 12 teams have
feasted often on West
Virginia’s defense since
the Mountaineers
entered the league in
2012, and this season
could spell
another
long one
for a unit
that must
find eight
new starters.
Gibson
In a pivotal year
for embattled coach
Dana Holgorsen, the
Mountaineers return
plenty of
Holgorsen
playmakers
on offense,
leaving it up to defensive coordinator Tony
Gibson to keep that
side of the ball from
becoming the team’s
weak spot.
Junior safety Dravon
Askew-Henry is the
lone returnee among
the top six tacklers. All
three linebackers and
three of the five starters in the secondary
are gone. Senior Nana
Kyeremeh is the most
experienced returning
cornerback with one
career start.
The good news is the
backups from a year
ago were part of a 3-3-5
formation that came
up with some stops
after the Mountaineers
got knocked around in
their first three seasons
in the Big 12. Despite
allowing an average
of 45 points over a
four-game conference
losing streak, West Virginia allowed the fewest
touchdowns (33) and
had the most interceptions (23) among Big
12 teams in 2015.
“Last year there was a
lot of optimism because
of what we had coming
back defensively,” Holgorsen said. “This year
there is not quite as
much optimism but we
have equally as much
coming back offensively. That kind of made
us mad offensively last
year and it makes us
mad defensively this
year. I think there is a
little bit of a chip on
our shoulder and we are
anxious to put in the
work to get us to game
day.”
West Virginia has
shored up the secondary with four junior
college transfers along
with Iowa graduate
transfer Maurice Fleming and Miami transfer
Antonio Crawford, both
at cornerback.
One defender looking
for a breakout season is
third-year starting lineman Noble Nwachukwu, who recorded team
highs in sacks (8.5) and
tackles for loss (13).
“When he gets one
on one with anybody in
the country I think he
is good enough to beat
them,” Gibson said.
On offense, quarterback Skyler Howard
will have a veteran
line and wide receivers to try to feed off
the momentum of last
year’s Cactus Bowl,
when he threw for a
bowl-record 532 yards
and five touchdowns in
a 43-42 win over Arizona State.
Other things to know
as West Virginia battles
for respectability in the
Big 12:
RUN IF YOU CAN:
Gone is Big 12 rushing
leader Wendell Smallwood, leaving most of
the running responsibilities to senior Rushel
Shell, who will look
to reach 1,000 yards
for the first time since
transferring from Pittsburgh after his freshman season. Holgorsen
will also have to lean
on freshman Kennedy
McKoy and junior college transfer Justin
Crawford.
NEW BLOOD: The
Mountaineers made
wholesale changes
among their coaching
staff. The newcomers
are former Texas assistant Joe Wickline as
offensive coordinator;
wide receivers coach
Tyron Carrier, an offensive graduate assistant
at Baylor last year; exMiami Dolphins assistant Blue Adams at cornerbacks; and former
Arizona assistant Matt
Caponi with the safeties. Former standout
wide receiver Stedman
Bailey is joining the
team as a student assistant coach.
KEY GAMES:
Among West Virginia’s
seven home games are
dates with perennial
league contenders TCU
on Oct. 22, Oklahoma
on Nov. 19 and Baylor
on Dec. 3. The season
could hinge, though, on
an Oct. 29 visit to Oklahoma State.
PREDICTION: The
Mountaineers aren’t
expected to challenge
for the Big 12 title but
might have to make
some noise in order to
save the job of Holgorsen, who is 36-28 in five
seasons. WVU could
ride a solid start over
the first five games and
hope to become bowl
eligible for a fifth time
under Holgorsen. A
7-5 finish sounds about
right.
SEASON OPENER:
Missouri, Sept. 3, in
Morgantown. The
Tigers beat the Mountaineers 34-31 the last
time the teams met
in the 1998 Insight.
com Bowl. The Mountaineers have lost five
straight against Southeastern Conference
opponents.

to step in and take that
center position and
thrive at it.”
Timmy Bigley, another
junior, may also start at
tackle.
“Timmy Bigley is
fighting for that other
tackle spot. He played a
lot of defense last year,”
Dial said. “He’s probably going to have to
play both ways this year.
We expect a lot out of
Timmy. He’s got great
size and good natural
ability. He goes out there
and plays hard. He’s
going to have to play
both ways. We’re just not
that deep up front.”
Others are also pressing for time on the
O-line, including senior
Alex Oxley.
“The other spot we’re
looking at a couple of
guys in Zack Workman
and Seth Whitt. Both
have worked hard,” Dial
said. “Seth has a ton of
potential. He’s a young
guy and just a sophomore. He’s got good size
and we think that he’s
going to fit into our plans
on either the O-line or
D-line or very well possibly both. We really think
Seth can be special, not
only this year, but as we
move forward.
“We also have two new
guys, the Smith brothers,
Wesley and Aaron. We
like both of those guys
and we’re happy that they
are out for the team.”
DEFENSE
On the defensive line,
Dial said almost all of the
offensive linemen will
also have to at least play
some.
Bigley had 98 total
tackles last year (68 solo
stops and 30 assists) and
also had a sack and a
fumble recovery.
“All of our offensive
linemen are going to have
to play on the defensive
line especially Bigley and
Whitt,” Dial said. “We
also have Tyler Barcklay,
who is probably going to
be playing some defensive end for us. Tyler has
worked hard. He’s never
played up front before but
we think that he’s going
to be strong enough to
handle it. We also have
a new guy named John
Hill. This is his first year
and we think that he can
help us on the defensive line. McGraw, who
played on offense last
year, will have to probably get some reps on
defense as well as Hunter
Adkins.”
At linebacker, Dial said
Craddock, Butcher and
Willis will be key for the
Tigers, along with Ferrell and freshmen Josh
Bumgarner and Chase
Berry.
Craddock recorded 100
total tackles — a team
high — for the Tigers
last season with 65 solos
and 35 assists. Butcher
had 87 total combined
tackles with three sacks,
a blocked kick, a fumble
recovery and a forced
fumble.
“At linebacker, we’re
going to have three really
solid players in Austin
Butcher, Ryan Craddock
and Evan Willis,” Dial
said. “We also have Ethan
Ferrell. He may also help
us in the secondary. We
feel really solid with
our linebackers. Josh
Bumgarner and Chase
Berry have also been in
the mix at linebacker.”
Smith is back to lead
Chapmanville’s second-
ary. Last season, Smith
had 39 tackles and a
fumble recovery.
“Dylan Smith is back
in the secondary as a
cornerback. He was a
two-way starter last year
and he’s probably going
to have to play two ways
this year,” Dial said.
Junior C.J. Dalton,
Seigman and Elkins are
Chapmanville’s other primary cornerbacks.
“We’re happy with C.J.
Dalton as well,” Dial said.
“He’s a good guy and he’s
always got a smile on his
face. He’s really worked
hard at trying to fight
to play at one of those
corner positions. Robert
Seigman and Cade Elkins
are also going to help us
there as well. Whether
you are a two-way player
or not you’re not going to
be able to play 150 plays
on Friday nights. You
have to have some breaks
in there someway and
somehow.”
Sheppard, Renniger,
Craddock and Williams
are the Tigers’ safeties.
Sheppard had 20 tackles
last year.
“Billy Sheppard and
Dillon Renniger are
our safeties,” Dial said.
“Renniger has worked
really hard and we’re real
high on him playing on
defense. He runs well and
he’s going to be a good
tackler for us. Sam Craddock, our backup QB,
might also end up playing
some safety for us. Brennan Williams is another
guy who will play.”
SPECIAL TEAMS
On special teams,
Chapmanville has some
huge shoes to fill with
the graduation of Tanner Dillon. He did all of
the kicking chores for
the Tigers last year and

we did a couple of years
ago when we used three
or four different players
at the halfback position,” said Haywood.
The key to earning
the job will be looking
past the cheers of the
crowd upon scoring a
touchdown and focusing
on the things that often
go unnoticed. Coach
Haywood added, “They
are all talented and
they all can run. It’s the
knowledge of knowing
who to block and what
to do when it’s not your
play to run that I am
looking for.”
Along with the departure of Willis were
other veteran players
like Nate Sanger and
T.J. Dotson who will
be missed on defense.
Coach Haywood jokingly told his defense
regarding Tates Creek,
“they scored 38 points
on us last season, the
way you guys are play-
ing now, they would
score 68.”
The Pirates have
some spots to fill in the
defensive backfield. The
linebacker position is
one that is up for grabs
at the moment due to
the departure of Sanger.
Wellman played last
season but has been
sidelined as of late with
a minor muscle strain.
Coach Haywood said he
missed having Wellman
out there because it is
usually better for someone to learn by watch-

coach also said the competition for the position
is ongoing.
The Pirates have 16
returning seniors who
all have played under
severe pressure through
most of their football
careers. Among those
seniors are Austin
Dotson, Cole Bentley,
Ray Horton, and Jordan Scott who have
all received Division-1
offers to continue playing football at major
programs. Bentley has

Dotson has verbally
committed to the University of Kentucky. Ray
Horton is considering
Wake Forest, Louisville,
Ball State, and Florida

The schedule for the
2016 season is another
filled with tough teams.
Tates Creek will be
the opening game of
the season during the
Pike County Bowl but
after that the Pirates
will find other familiar
teams that will pose a
challenge as well. The
regular competitors like
Pikeville, Pike Central,
and Lawrence County
will be there but so will

Cabell Midland, a team
that handed the Pirates
their only loss of the
season last year. The
new face in the crowd is
Warrensville Heights, a

to play Belfry on a one

The Pirates have all
the makings for another
great season and expectations are as high as
they can be in Pond

New start for an old program
By William Plaster
[email protected]
2016 roster
his own.
Jones has brought some
new blood to Phelps and
relied heavily on the help
of veteran coaches who
have ridden the waves
with the program throughout the years. Lineman
Coach Gaino Stiltner has
been with the Hornets
since the early 1980s and
he see’s something he
hasn’t seen in a long time
happening in Hornetville,
which is the formation of
a real team. “We have the
basketball players out this
year which is something
that we haven’t seen in a
while, a Class-A school
needs all of their athletes
to play. We have kids like
Christian Mounts and
Peyton Rife out this year
that we were really missing,” said Stiltner.
The Hornets seem to be
in a lot better shape; player wise, than they have
been in seasons past. The
entire school has seemed
to throw all of their chips
in the middle expecting
a big pay-off this season.
The Team and the school
believe in Jones, and the
Hornets haven’t even
played the first game.
The official home
opener will begin Aug 19.
Under the Friday Night
Lights against Allen Central. The Allen Central
Rebels turned in a decent
5-5 season last year and
have a solid group of players returning for their
senior season.
The Hornets will play
out of district during
the 2016 season, a move
Jones inherited from his
predecessor. Jones hopes
to make the move back
into district play during
the 2017 season. The Hornets will however, play in
the Pike County Bowl for
another season. Traditionally the Hornets face off
against East Ridge in the
opening game. East Ridge
also played out of district
for a number of years
before believing their
team was able to move
back in.
The Hornets have had
a good quarterback battle
during the pre-season.
One they believe will produce a few compeitiors
ready to take hold of first
year offensive coordinator Terrance Pruitt’s new
offensive system. The
Hornets will be running a
wing-t offense this season,
one thet Pruitt referred to
as “simplified.” Pruit said,
“We have widdled this
package down to it’s basic
form. We have base plays
that everything else will
feed off of, if you understand the basics of the
offense then there shoudl
be no problem if we start
adding variations here
and there as the seaosn
progresses.”
The Hornets will rely
heavily on veteran players
like Adam Dotosn, Caleb
Lester and Lawrence
Mayhorn but will have
assistance from plenty of
fresh players like Garret
Clevenger, Tyson White,
and Brandon Turnmire.
The Hornets have seemed
to develop a solid offense
with depth at skill positions and a solid offensive
line.
Coach Jones said, “Our
first obstacle was getting
kids out to play, we have
about 26 now. We overcame that to begin with
and don’t be surprised if if
you see somehitng big out
of us this year.”
Jones continued by saying, “it was hard starting
out, we had great numbers during the offseason
but we had to start at the
beginning with a lot of
kids. Everyone has put int
he work and us coached
have done our best at getting competition into the
mix and working through
fundamentals intot he
level we are at now. We
are building confidence
and starting with the
building blocks that you
need to get soemthing
going.”
The excitement is
surely building around
Hornetville as opening
day aproaches for the new
“Marty Casey Stadium.”
Along with big numbers for the new team the
Hornets also have more
coaches than they have
seen in a long time and

PHELPS, Ky. – The
Hornets are saying that
everyone will see a new
team this year.
Phelps High School
has had their fair share of
hardships throughout the
last decade. They are the
decaying dinosaur of the
Class-A scene, consolidation and more prosperous
programs boast shiny surfaces as the Hornets have
been forced to stay seated
and watch as everything
else grew all around them.
At one point, Phelps
was right in the fight with
other Class-A schools like
Feds Creek, Virgie and
Elkhorn City. West Virginia school’s like Matewan,
Williamson, Gilbert, and
Burch all traveled across
the river to test their
skills against the Hornets.
Those days have long
since passed and the Hornets became the owners
of the land that time had
forgotten.
The school and the
community worked out
a deal with the state to
build a new athletic complex several years ago ,
complete with football stadium, baseball and softball
fields, with ample room to
host district and regional
matches on site. The
dream was big but after a
half decade of twists and
turns the time has finally
arrived for the Hornets to
put these advantages to
good use.
During the offseason,
former UK Wildcat and
professional football
player David Jones was
handed the head coaching
position after the 2015
season came a gnat’s hair
from folding the program
for good. Jones has made
many changes to the
program and the aura
surrounding the team.
Jones was an assistant
coach under the direction
of Belfry’s Coach, Phillip
Haywood, for a few seasons before taking off on

Determined Cardinals ready for season
By William Plaster
[email protected]
INEZ, Ky — The
Sheldon Clark Cardinals are in a rebuilding
year but new coach
Chester McCoy is
there to get the Cardinals back on the right
track.
Expectations around
the Cardinals team is
in a different direction
than it was several
years ago. The Cardinals are wanting to
get their program back
to the glory days and
coach McCoy may be
the answer. McCoy
is the Cardinals third
coach in three years.
“It’s been tough for
us, getting the numbers. A lot of the kids
look down on football
here because of the
last few seasons. No
one knew what to
expect when I came
here, it was the end of
the spring semester.
That didn’t give everyone much time to get
to know each other.
Getting our numbers
up was the hardest
part but now we have
between 25 and 30
kids and they want
to play,” said Coach
McCoy.
The next challenge
for the Cardinals will
be winning some
games. Last season
they had three victories in a ten game
season. This season
the Cardinals have
dropped out of district
and will only play
seven games. Pikeville, Belfry, and Pike
Central have all been
dropped from the Cardinal’s schedule.
Coach McCoy said,
“The guys that we
Supports Dedication
and
Athletic Excellence.
We would like to congratulate and
encourage all area teams in the upcoming
football season.
School athletics, and the solid life-principles
that local sports programs teach our young
people are extremely important to our
communities and future. We also support
the team emphasis on physical fitness and
good health. We are proud to salute the
participating schools, coaching staffs and
dedicated players.

have out now are doing
good, we took 25 kids
to camp and they were
after it. They have
been working really
hard this is a bunch
that can make this happen. They can show
everyone that football
is still alive here in the
mountains. They are
very determined to get
this program back.”
McCoy continued by
saying, “That doesn’t
mean we are going to
come out and be successful every snap and
this group understands
its going to be like
that. there is going to
be adversity and this is
going to be hard, but
hopefully if we have to
give up a few touchdowns the kids will be
mentally tough enough
to get over it and move
on towards a bigger
goal.”
Last season the
Cardinals were led
by star running back
Brandon Butcher, he
has graduated and the
team stage is open for
another player to step
into that role.
The Cardinals will
running a fast paced
offense under coach
McCoy. McCoy said,
“We run a hurry up, no
huddle, spread offense.
We make the thought
process minimal for
the kids because the
more you think the
more you mess it.
Everything is in repetition. What I tell them
is , if you mess up you
better be doing it at
full speed. Good things
happen when you’re
going full speed.
The Cardinals will be
relying on a big senior
class to help get all of
this done. There are 11
returning seniors from
last year and twelve
total on the team.
“Lafe Messer will
2016 Schedule
be running out of the
quarterback position.
He’s gonna be accepting the leadership
role. Grant Marcum
and Andrew Tackett
will have big roles at
line backer and be the
leaders of the defense.
We ave the right guys
in the right places and
we have guys trying to
step up. We have good
leaders and the rest
of the guys are doing
good learning.
The Cardinals will
kick off the season on
the August 19, against
Paintsville on the road.

SANI IN THE POCKET
While the week-one
depth chart hasn’t been
released, if Sani Warren
is on the field at quarter-
back, it will be his third
straight year playing
in the season opener
against Bluefield. In
fact, in his collegiate
debut he had arguably
his best outing, throwing five touchdowns
and rushing for another,
while completing 16-of20 passes for 346 yards.
As a sophomore, Warren did more damage on
the ground, rushing for
57 yards while throwing
for 122 on 10 completions in a game the
Bears grinded for a win.
One of Warren’s goals
for this season has to
be staying on the field
as he has played in just
seven games in each of
his first two seasons due
to injury. Despite missing some action, Warren
is fourth on the all-time
passing list with 2,791
yards and fourth all time
in touchdowns with 19.

day. Like the past two
years, the divisional
clash gives the Bears an
opportunity to start the
season unblemished in
the league play without
having to face another
team from the East until
week seven on Oct. 15.
“It gets us more
excited when we know
its conference play,”
said senior defensive
back Jack Hopkins. “At
the end of the day we’re
playing for a ring, even
if it is week one, this
could make the difference between us getting
it done or not.”
While the Bears will
face off against a number of teams from the
MSC West throughout
the season, only games
against teams in its division count as conference
games. Win the division
and the Bears earn an
automatic bid to the
NAIA National Playoffs.
QUARTERBACKS FIND
NEW SPOTS ON THE
ROSTER
Senior Russell Gordon
and sophomore Jarredd
Jarrell spent last season
competing for reps at
quarterback, but now
their focus has shifted
to a new role to help the
team, catching the ball
as a receiver instead of
throwing it.
Gordon played in six
games last season, completing 9-of-24 passes
for 119 yards and two
touchdowns, while also
running for 114 yards.
By leaving the quarterback spot and joining
the receivers, Gordon
is taking on something
completely new.
“I’ve never played
wide receiver before,
I’ve been a quarterback
since I was a kid,” said
Gordon. “It’s been fun
so far.”
Jarrell, who prepped
at nearby Prestonsburg
High School, goes into
the change with a little
more experience.
“I played receiver one
year in high school as a
freshman, so that was a
little bit different then
how it is here,” said Jarrell. “We’re just trying
to work hard and the
quarterbacks and coach
Justin Lamb are helping
us along and giving us
confidence.”

TVHS facilities update
By Courtney Harrison
[email protected]
WILLIAMSON – At a
regular meeting of the
Mingo County Board
of Education (BOE),
Dr. Johnny Branch provided an update concerning ongoing renovations to facilities at
Tug Valley High School
(TVHS).
Dr. Branch
approached the BOE
stating, “We have had a
lot going on. I wanted
to make sure that I
updated the board. You
did ask me to keep you
informed as to what
is going on… As you
remember, we came
to you with a list of
our projects we would
be completing. Those
plans included working on the locker room,
building our board
walk, and putting up
fences around the football field. We ended up
adding another project.”
Branch continued,
explaining the progress
that has been made on
the locker room facilities. “We have been laying block. We are going
to be finished in the
next few days. By Monday, I should be signing
off on the job… That is
pretty good. We will at
least have it under roof.
We will see how much
we can get operational
throughout the football
season.”
Plans for the locker
room include areas
for visitors and home
locker rooms, officials’
locker room and showers, coaches’ office and
storage. “It is going
to be a nice facility,”
Branch stated.
The next project
Branch discussed were
renovations currently
underway for the TVHS
concession stand. “This
kind of just happened,”
Branch began. “The
fellow that is doing
the block said that
he would work in the
evenings and weekends
on the concession. I
started him off with
$1,000 from our general athletic fund. I had
him get me a list and
I went and purchased
the materials for him to
get started. They took
off the top floor which
was the old press box,
and basically they cut
serving windows in the
other side and got rid
of the restrooms … The
windows on the rear
will be plexi- glassed so
that the servers can see
the game and they can
watch their children.
Basically, they will be
served out the other
side. They put a new
roof on and the entire
building on the outside
and the inside will be
covered with tin. That
was donated by Mr.
Brown who has helped
so much with the locker
room. It will look brand
new,” Branch continued.
Branch also reported
that the concession
stand will be ready for
the first game on September 8.
Branch also discussed
bleachers, boardwalk
and fencing. “I spoke to
the contractor who is
donating his services.
He did the design for
me. Hatfield Construction came down and
took my idea and came
up with their material list and design.
He said he would be
able to frame it up in
two days. The material has already been
purchased…We still
have to do the fence…
It is a straight line
of fence with about
three or four gates that
will go in front of the
board walk,” Branch
explained. “It is going
to keep people off the
ground. Water drains
from the field and
comes down that direction. It is going to be
much better and safer.
This will be complete
in September.”
Branch also discussed
the cost associated with
the summer renovation projects at TVHS.
“The school and boosters have contributed
$4,500. Private and InKind have contributed
$38,000 and County/
Levy funding 15,700.
That is where we are so
far,” Branch explained.
Branch concluded
by thanking everyone
that has been involved
in making the projects
a success. “One of the
things I told you: ‘I am
willing to put up what
we have.’ I wanted to
make sure that everyone knows that the
county’s finance department has been excellent. They have worked
with me on this and
anything I had to work
out; they helped me
get it right in there… I
want to commend them
Good Luck

and thank the board
again. We are willing to
invest. Our people are
willing to invest. Our
community is willing to
invest. I have $182 left
in my general athletic
fund. I am waiting for
that first game so I can
get a gate in. I am very
appreciative of what
the board has been
able to help us with as
well. Working together,
we get these projects
done,” Branch said.

2016 Marshall University football team
Litton back to lead Herd at quarterback
By JOHN RABY
AP Sports Writer
HUNTINGTON Marshall has never had
four consecutive 10-win
seasons in its history.
While that might seem
like a stretch in 2016,
coach Doc Holliday is
confident in the ability
of quarterback Chase
Litton to put the Thundering Herd in the hunt
for a Conference USA
championship.
Holliday has gone
33-8 since 2013, including a conference title in
2014 and a 10-3 finish
last season when Litton
was a freshman.
“We just can’t forget
what got us to where
we are these last three
years — that’s going to
work every day,” Holliday said. “You can’t
get complacent. You
can’t get selfish. You’ve
got to hold each other
accountable. The last
three years we’ve done
that, and that can’t
change this year.”
Litton took over as
starter for Michael
Birdsong in the third
game last season, tossing four touchdown
passes in his debut.
Litton won his first
seven starts and led
the Thundering Herd
to a 16-10 win over
Connecticut in the
St. Petersburg Bowl.
For the season Litton
completed 60 percent
of his pass attempts
for 2,605 yards with 23
touchdowns and eight
interceptions.
All Holliday asks of
Litton is “just continue
to grow.
“I thought he exceeded his expectations as
a true freshman,” Holliday said. “But now he’s
got to take that next
step. He’s not a freshman anymore. Just take
that next step as far as
leadership things go
and understanding the
offense.”
Some things to know
about the Thundering
Herd in 2016:
KEY GAMES
Marshall, which has
seven home games for
the first time since
1996, hosts Louisville
on Sept. 24 and travels
the following week to
play Pittsburgh. The
Thundering Herd are
expected to battle
favorite Middle Tennessee and Western
Kentucky for the East
Division crown and
play both at home.
RB MIX
Converted wide
receiver Hyleck Foster
could be the primary
running back again this
season after he subbed
for the injured Devon
Johnson over the second half of last season.
Foster finished with
Chase Litton
453 yards, including a
pair of 100-yard games.
Junior college transfer
Anthony Anderson,
who is 240 pounds,
has drawn size comparisons to the beefy
Johnson.
HELP AT LB
The departure of
2015 Conference USA
defensive player of the
year and team leading
tackler Evan McKelvey
left a huge hole at linebacker. Damien Dozier
has moved over from
Coach Doc Holliday
the defensive line to
help out. And Davon
Durant joins Marshall
after sitting out last
season following his
transfer from Arizona.
The Sun Devils dismissed the top junior
college prospect after
he pleaded guilty and
was sentenced to pro-
bation in a domestic
violence case.
PREDICTION
An 8-4 finish should
get Marshall into
a bowl for a fourth
straight season.
