“The WSO was always good, but when Leif Bjaland came and
put his talent, passion and knowledge to work, the music
became magic... I never miss it!” C. Frantzis, WSO supporter.
Here are some of the stories behind the music and musicians highlighting
the 2013-14 season. See if you can guess the correct answers!
1. He is sometimes referred to as one of the greatest composers of film scores, who never wrote
music for film... 2. When this piece was first premiered, it was not received well, but later was used
by Anna Pavlova in dance recitals... 3. Perhaps influenced by his friendship with an astrologer, this
composer created a work to depict the progression of life. NASA became a huge fan of this piece...

1. Respighi’s Pines of Rome was used to accompany flying whales in Disney’s Fantasia 2000...2. The
premiere that was actually quite unsettling was Saint-Saëns’ Dance Macabre…3. The composer is
Gustav Holst and the work is The Planets. The piece was influenced in part by Holst’s new friendship
with astrologer Clifford Bax, who had introduced him to the concepts of Astrology.

Saturday, May 10, 2014 | 8 PM | NVCC Fine Arts Center, Waterbury
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique
Symphonie Fantastique is a cultural monument rivaling the Eiffel Tower
or the Mona Lisa. And like these other French National treasures,
there was a distant time when Berlioz’s magnificent work didn’t exist,
even as the smallest wisp of inspiration in his mind. How it came to
be written involves the collision between a highly combustible, red
haired romantic, an icy, aloof Shakespearean actress and a Paris filled
with dark scheming and political intrigue. Experience the birth of a
masterpiece in this highly theatrical, multimedia concert.
