BUFFER STORE WITH AN INNOVATIVE FIRE-EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM
The Customer
Knorr-Bremse is the world’s leading manufacturer of braking systems
for rail and commercial vehicles. As a technological pacesetter the
company has been promoting the development, production, distribution
and servicing of modern braking systems for more than 100 years.
Knorr-Bremse has more than 20,000 employees worldwide; around 3,800
of them work in the company’s four different locations in Germany. Apart
from the company headquarters in Munich and the historic company site
in Berlin Knorr-Bremse has also production facilities in Bavaria and a
development centre in Baden-Württemberg.

1
In the company headquarters in Munich, all components used to be stocked at a
decentralised location, the space requirements were enormous. Each assembly worker had access to the entire stock which lead to large numbers of misplaced items and
incorrect stock levels. Knorr-Bremse had therefore decided to pool the buffers for the
assembly components at one central location. The company also needed an effective
fire-extinguishing system that would protect the stored parts.
2
Solution
In 8 Shuttle XP units, more than 210,000 parts are now stored on a footprint of only 84 m² mostly
in plastic bins. Order pickers place the parts on trolleys and transport them to the assembly sites.
In this system, the innovative Kardex Remstar Fire Solution came into play. In the event of a fire,
residue-free inert gas is used to extinguish the fire. The novelty about the solution presented by
Kardex Remstar: along the entire height of the Shuttle units, nozzles distributed at a distance of
5 cm are ready to inject the gas with only 4 bar directly into the storage units. Gases are distributed over the whole system very fast, the oxygen concentration in the air is quickly reduced to
below 8.8 percent, and a fire is extinguished in the shortest possible time. As a result of the low
pressure, there is no damage to the stored components. However, a fire-extinguishing system
is only as good as its fire warning system: at Knorr-Bremse plastic tubes continuously suck in
air from the Shuttle interior and check the air for traces of smoke particles. If a limit value is
exceeded, the fire warning signal is issued.
