And what better place to go to than the “sunniest” city in America, Tucson, Arizona! With over 350 days of sunshine a year, odds are good that we will have terrific weather for this year’s BBIA Convention. The average daytime temperature in Tucson in mid April is between 77-86 degrees and a nighttime temperature between 49-56 degrees. Even though it’s the desert, it still cools down at night so a light jacket would probably feel pretty good. As I said at last years meeting, my goal was to pick a place that had something for everyone. For the golfers, we have two 18 hole Tom Fazio designed courses on the property. The Mountain Course features the most photographed hole west of the Mississippi, the number 3 107 yard Par 3. The Canyon Course’s signature hole is the Par 5 18th hole, which features a partial island green and cascading waterfall. Not a golfer, no problem! This property has complete spa facilities plus if you ‘re not playing in the tournament on Sunday they have a special “Blue, Brews, & BBQ Sunday Brunch” with everything available from hot dogs and burgers to salmon and sushi. If you are flying in and renting a car you can plan on approximately 30-35 minute drive to the resort or if you prefer not to rent, plan on about a $55-$60 cab fare. The resort can schedule a town car to pick you up from the airport at a cost of $55 plus gratuity. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy your time at the AAA Four Diamond Loews Ventana Canyon which is nestled in Tucson’s lush Sonoran Desert and has amazing views of the Catalina Mountains. Besides the amenities already mentioned, it has two swimming pools with Jacuzzis and a bar, lighted tennis courts, hiking, ping-pong, basketball and more! Also, did I mention the food? While you’re here you must experience the incredible menu at the Flying V Bar & Grill. I’ve personally tested this place for quality two nights in a row but I can only truthfully tell you about one item because I had the Tuna both nights....it was that good! Their specialties are guacamole & margaritas, go figure! Once again I hope that you will agree Loews Ventana Canyon Resort really does have something for everyone! As always we have an action packed schedule plus we may have something special planned for Monday evening so keep your schedule open for that night. I can guarantee you will not want to miss it! I look forward to seeing everyone in Arizona this coming April 11-15th! Make you plans now! If you have any questions please feel free to give me a call at 214-957-9280. See you there! David Hickman Dear BBIA Members, P. O. Box 6573 Arlington, TX 76005-6573 (817) 385-8120 Fax (817) 633-2940 I would like to start by thanking you all for giving me the opportunity to serve as President of the BBIA. It is such an honor to hold this position and as members, I hope you will feel I served you and our industry well. This has truly been one of my most rewarding and educational experiences. In the past few years, we have certainly been on a roll with incredible convention destinations and I hope to continue the streak as I welcome you to join us for our 2014 Convention. Our convention chairman, David Hickman, did a wonderful job selecting such a nice property. Having visited this location myself, I will tell you that I think it is a wonderful place to be inspired, share information, and create even more memorable times with one another. This is my seventh year as a member of the Board and I am so appreciative of all those that I have been lucky enough to work with over the years. I would especially like to extend my gratitude to the current board; without the hard work of this team, we would not have been so successful in furthering the goals of our organization. Their dedication and reliability have been great assets to myself as President as well as the BBIA as a whole. I would also like to recognize Bill Supper for his unwavering support and guidance. When we come together with each of our individual strengths, we create the greatest opportunity of success for our industry. With this in mind, I hope you enjoy our 2014 BBIA Convention and I can’t wait to see you there! Sincerely, Chris Chartrand BBIA President Convention Chair convention chair message BBIA 14 Reg Broch.indd 2 president’s message 1/12/2014 11:05:22 PM Tuesday Evening, April 15 • 7:30 pm (Cocktail Reception at 6:45 pm) 61th Annual Industry Service Award Dinner Kiva A [included with full registration; $100 per person without a full registration] Bill & Barbara Chrisman This is truly a unique situation when two people as a couple are honored for their contributions to bowling. Bill and Barbara Chrisman have each contributed to the bowling industry in many ways. Barbara was born in Ogden, Utah and began bowling as soon as she could hold a bowling ball. She joined the junior leagues at the age of 11 and has been a sanctioned member ever since. Bill, however, was raised in Green River, Wyoming and didn’t take up bowling in his youth until after his family moved to Ogden. In 1972, he joined a mixed league with Barbara. This is when the fire for bowling took over their lives. Bill served on the Ogden Bowling Association for 8 years, holding many service positions. Bill was also a great bowler, earning five spots on the OBA All Star Team and winning several local tournaments. He is in both the Ogden and the Utah State Halls of Fame for Superior Performance and Meritorious Service. Barbara has a B.S. degree in Medical Technology and worked in the medical field while Bill started their first company called C-C Distributing, an industrial chemical and supply company. Through Bill’s knowledge of cleaning chemicals, he invented the first on-lane bowling ball cleaner called U-Clean U-Score. In 1985 they started High Score Products to sell the cleaner. In 1989 they bought Parkside lanes in Morgan, Utah and started the first sanctioned junior league in that center in over 20 years. Then, in 1991, this company morphed into making bowling balls and the name was changed to Storm Products, Inc. As Bill and Barbara grew Storm, each utilized their own strengths. Bill focused on sales while developing amateur tournaments, always looking for what the bowlers needed. He always said he had to go “work” the tournaments, but he and most of the other employees at Storm would go bowl them. As a strong supporter of international players and tournaments, Bill has also helped grow bowling around the world. Barbara served for 5 years on the USBC Board of Director after an appointment by then President Mike Carroll. She spent many days in the politics of bowling, trying to make the right decisions for the bowlers. She also spent many days touring with the PWBA, getting to know the women and sponsoring tournaments. In fact, Storm is proud to be the first and only sponsor of the USBC Senior Queens. True promoters and benefactors of the game, Bill and Barbara fund and sponsor hundreds of tournament and groups, and continually sponsor the PBA to ensure our professionals have a place to showcase their talents. Additionally, Bill and Barb have given thousands of dollars to support the International Bowling Hall of Fame, where Bill currently serves on their board. Storm truly is the bowlers company. The creation of Storm Products, Inc. has provided many an opportunity to make a living and provide for their families. With their love and dedication to the sport of bowling, Bill and Barbara Chrisman have forever changed the world of bowling. industry service award dinner BBIA 14 Reg Broch.indd 3 Sunday, April 13 8:30 - 11:45 am 12:30 - 6 pm 7 - 9 pm Monday, April 14 8 - 9 am 9 - 9:15 am BBIA Board of Directors Meeting Golf Tournament (additional fee) Welcome Reception Breakfast Welcome and Opening Remarks BOWLING MANUFACTURER / DISTRIBUTOR PRESENTATIONS 9:30 - 9:55 am Kegel 10 - 10:30 am Brunswick / DV8 10:30 -10:55 am KR and On The Ball 11 - 11:25 am Turbo Bowling Accessories 11:45 am - 1 pm Lunch BOWLING MANUFACTURER / DISTRIBUTOR PRESENTATIONS 1 - 1:40 pm Storm, Roto Grip and Master Industries 1:45 - 2:10 pm Dexter Shoe Company 2:15 - 2:55 pm The Brands of Ebonite International 3 - 3:25 pm MOTIV 3:30 - 3:55 pm XBowling 4:00 - 4:25 Jayhawk Bowling 4:30 - 4:55 BSI 7 - 9:30 pm Cocktails, Dinner and Entertainment Sponsored by Strike Ten Entertainment Tuesday, April 15 8 - 9 am 8 - 9 am Sabino Canyon Course Upper Terrace Cascade Terrace Catalina Ballroom Coronado Executive Boardroom Executive Boardroom Coronado Cascade Terrace Executive Boardroom Executive Boardroom Coronado Executive Boardroom Coronado Executive Boardroom Coronado Coyote Corral Distributor Breakfast Breakfast Non Distributors Santa Rita Cascade Terrace BOWLING MANUFACTURER / DISTRIBUTOR PRESENTATIONS 9:15 - 9:40 am QubicaAMF Executive Boardroom 9:45 - 10:10 am Radical Bowling Coronado 10:15 - 10:40 am Luby Publishing Executive Boardroom 10:45 - 11:10 am 900 Global Coronado 11:15 am - Noon Industry Catalog Update Catalina Ballroom Noon - 2 pm Lunch and Industry Updates: Stu Upson-USBC; Tom Clark-PBA; BPAA; Salon C Frank DeSocio-STE; Kevin Dornberger-WTBA; and Lou Marquez-IBPSIA 2:15 - 3:15 pm 3 - 4 pm 4 - 6:30 pm 6:45 – 7:30 pm 7:30 – 10 pm Joint Meeting Manufacturers and Distributors Catalina Ballroom Members General Session Catalina Ballroom Free Time to enjoy the property ISA Cocktail Reception Kiva Patio ISA Dinner and Award - Bill & Barbara Chrisman Kiva A All functions, meetings, times and locations are subject to change. schedule 1/12/2014 11:05:24 PM 7000 North Resort Drive Tucson, Arizona, 85750 Phone: (520) 299-2020 http://www.loewshotels.com/en/Ventana-Canyon-Resort Tucson’s spectacular ‘Ventana’ or ‘Window’ to the Soul of the Sonoran desert--- is Loews Ventana Canyon.
