Personal: Jeff Smith is no stranger to the Reavis athletic
program, no matter which sport it may be. He excelled in no
less than three - football, basketball and baseball - as a prep
for the Rams, but gained his top plaudits on the diamond.
There, he closed his playing career by earning all-SICA North
Conference and team MVP honors in 1992. Smith joined the
coaching ranks after graduating from Illinois-Chicago and, for
a six-year stretch, served as an assistant varsity basketball
coach at both Shepard H.S. (four years) and Reavis (two).
A varsity head coach for the first time in his career two years
ago, Smith took over for a Reavis institution in Jim Tracy,
who won a school-record 269 games and 427 overall in 24
years of coaching.

Notes
Just how challenging is the large school field in this year’s
LCC? The Reavis Rams opened up the season winning
five of their first six games, yet missed the cut when the top
four seeds were named in mid-December. That won’t keep
third-year coach Jim Smith’s club from making some noise,
however, especially if returning starter Bilal Fokaha gets as
hot as he did one year ago. Despite coming off the bench
in each of Reavis’ four games, Fokaha turned in the secondhighest field goal percentage of the tournament, converting
at a .778 clip (14-of-18). Forward Jim Fick is also back after
finishing second on the club in scoring one year ago at 9.2
points per game.

Personal: After consecutive three-year stints as the head
coach at both Elmwood Park and York High Schools, John
Daniels has settled in at Stagg High School, where he just
recently earned his 100th coaching victory as the Chargers’
head man. Currently in his seventh season at Stagg, Daniels
entered the 2009-10 campaign with an overall 12-year coaching mark of 168-160. Included in that count is one regional
title, which Daniels earned during his first year at York in
2000-2001. Both an all-area and all-conference choice during
his prep days at Addison Trail High School, Daniels went on
to become a four-year starter at Concordia University, where
he was twice named to the all-conference team.

Chuck Roth & Charles Turner
Notes
Don’t expect Stagg High School to be welcomed with open
arms as it makes its first-ever appearance in the LCC. The
primary reason is because the Chargers have been christened
as the favorite in both divisions after being the only school in
the 16-team field to go unscathed (7-0) through the first three
weeks of the season. Stagg is also the most experienced
team with four starters back, including its top three scorers
and rebounders in Niko Sheinfeld (15.5 ppg/4.2 rpg), Darius
Draper (13.1/6.2) and Dan Ahern (7.2/3.1). Enough said.

FIRST-DAY ACTION
Argo put a scare into large school No. 1
seed Carl Sandburg by rallying from a
13-point halftime deficit, but the Argonauts
scored just three points over the final 7:47
after forcing a 39-all tie to open the fourth
quarter. Sandburg wasn’t much better, but
its six points were just enough to prevail,
45-42. Argo’s Godfrey Brown, who forced
the tie on a three-point play, led all scorers
with 19 points. Sandburg’s Mitch Thompson notched a double-double (12 points, 11
rebounds) … Lisle’s upset bid also came
up just short after a furious rally in a 49-45
loss to small school No. 4 seed Chicago
Christian. Lisle’s Cameron Wright topped
a trio of Lions to post double figures in the
scoring column and just missed out on a
double-double (15 points, 9 rebounds).
Andy Stuursma paced the Knights with 13
points … Like the previous two underdogs,
Hinsdale South also challenged large school
No. 4 seed Plainfield Central, but the defending LCC champions could not stop Deadre
Owens from long range in a 54-50 Wildcat
victory. Owens came off the bench to net 21
points with 15 coming from long range (5-of-6
shooting on three-pointers). Hinsdale South,
which received a game-high 22 points and
12 rebounds from reserve Lavonte Brown,
was just 2-of-16 from beyond the arc …
Large school No. 3 seed Leyden cruised
to a 66-39 victory over Reavis behind Alex
Regalado’s 25 points. Reavis, which committed 26 turnovers on the day, picked up
15 points from Richard Thomas … Walther
Lutheran, the small school No. 2 seed, had
its way with Joliet Catholic running away with
a 59-40 decision behind Brandon Smith’s
21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. He was
one of 11 Broncos to score in the contest.
JCA’s Dan Dispenza produced a doubledouble with his 17 points and 14 rebounds …
Lemont did everything but stop Romeoville’s
Demarius Miller in attempting to get into the
win column for the first time in 2008. Despite holding the Spartans
to 35.6 percent shooting
from the field (21-of-59),
the Indians had no answer
for Miller. He forced both
the first and second overtimes with late baskets and
finished with a first-day
tournament-high 38 points
as the No. 2 large school
seed breathed a sigh of
relief after the third overtime in an eventual 64-60
victory. Lemont’s leaders
were Dominic Piazza (15
points) and Joe Motto
(14) … Westmont’s Tyler
Pierce accounted for his
team’s first nine baskets
and 20 of the Sentinels’
first 21 points en route to a 33-point performance in a 53-40 victory over Montini
Catholic. Montini tried to offset Pierce by
putting 10 Broncos into the scoring column,
but only one netted more than five points –
Zach Brash with nine – in the loss to the No.
3 small school seed.
SECOND-DAY ACTION
Argo made just four field goals in the second
half, including overtime, but still escaped
Hinsdale South, 54-52. Behind Morris
Woods (game-high 25 points, 9 rebounds)
and Kendale Cooper (15 points, 8 boards),
the Argonauts opened up a 15-6 first-quarter
lead. But with poor shooting coming from
both sides (Argo: 34.1 pct., Hinsdale South:
32.6), no lead was safe, especially with Argo
missing 16 free throws. Woods, however,
made just enough – 14 in 26 attempts –enabling the Argonauts to prevail. Karl Ploger
(15 points) was one of four Hornet starters to
score at least nine points … Lemont played
beyond regulation for the second straight day
thanks to a fade-away three in the corner at
the buzzer by Joe Motto, yet it only delayed
another agonizing loss for the Indians, who
dropped to 0-10 on the season following a
68-66 setback to Reavis. The inside game
of the Fokaha brothers – Nabil (16 points, 14
rebounds) and Bilal (21 points, 6 rebounds
off the bench) – for Reavis neutralized the
Indians’ outside tandem of Motto (22 points,
5 treys) and Alex Nelson (23 points) … Joliet
Catholic got into the win column for the first
time on the season courtesy of four starters
totaling no less than nine points and the
Hilltoppers shooting 57.9 percent from the
field as a team in a 55-48 victory over Montini Catholic. Dan Dispenza (18 points, 12
rebounds) led the charge for the Hilltoppers
for the second straight game with Breshion
Tucker contributing another 17 markers.
Anthony Blashewski was Montini’s top man
with 13 points … Chicago Christian opened
up an early 20-6 lead in the first quarter, but
that deficit proved no worry for small school
No. 1 seed Providence St. Mel, which posted
a 26-point turnaround by game’s end in a
69-57 victory. Marc Mack (17 points, 13
rebounds) and Phil Jackson (12 points, 12
rebounds) both registered double-doubles
for the winners, who were led by Arthur
Jefferson’s 21 points. Chicago Christian’s
Andy Stuursma topped all scorers with
27 points, but had little other help … Large
school No. 4 seed Plainfield Central pulled off
the first upset of the tournament, knocking off
top dog Carl Sandburg, 59-53, but not before
a furious rally by the Eagles. Despite shooting just 30.8 percent for the game (16-of-52),
Sandburg came within four points of the
Wildcats after trailing by as many as 18 early
in the fourth quarter. Michael Schneider (17
points) keyed the rally with a pair of threepointers, while Mitch Thompson totaled
14 points and 13 rebounds for his second
double-double in as many days. Plainfield
Central’s Jeff Allen got his first with his 17
points and 15 rebounds … Neither Westmont
nor Walther Lutheran were impressive – both
shot just under 31 percent for the game – but
the Sentinels weren’t about to return their
40-39 upset victory over small school No. 2
seed Walther in overtime. Westmont’s Tyler
Pierce was off his mark (6-of-22 shooting),
but still made headlines with his 15 points,
19 rebounds and a blocked shot to force
overtime. The lone double-figure scorer for
the Broncos, who were 0-for-16 from threepoint range, was Brandon Smith with 12 …
Romeoville’s Demarius Miller (21 points) got
help this time around – 13 points from Devon
Hodges, 10 from Nathan Johnson – and it
was a good thing he did as the large school
No. 2-seeded Spartans staved off defeat yet
again, winning 52-51 over Leyden. The Eagles, who were outrebounded, 40-21, were
led by Anthony Cushion’s 15 points … Of the
seven games played on
the day, six were decided
by less than eight points,
including four by one basket or less. Three games
went an extra session.
THIRD-DAY ACTION
Host Lemont became the
first-ever school in LCC
history to have each of its
first three games go into
extra sessions, but for the
third straight day the Indians came up on the short
end of a 62-57 overtime
decision to Hinsdale South.

2008 Tournament Recap
Lemont, which trailed by as many as 16
points in the second half before rallying with
a 22-point fourth quarter, fell to 0-11 with
the setback. Hinsdale South’s Josh Ward
amassed nine of his game-high 23 points in
the decisive four-minute overtime, while also
leading both teams with 16 rebounds. Alex
Nelson paced the Indians with 22 points and
nine boards … A second record was set in
the second game of the day with Lisle and
Joliet Catholic combining for just 20 first-half
points. After shooting only 16.7 percent (5of-30) in the first half, Lisle finally got on track
in the second half, where it shot 44 percent
and outscored JCA, 29-22, including 14-6
in the third quarter, to win the small school
consolation crown, 39-32. Lisle’s Marcus
Wilson led everyone with his 13 points
and 10 rebounds. JCA’s Xavier Myers (10
points) was the only other player to score
in double figures … Argo pulled away from
Reavis in the fourth quarter to claim the large
school consolation championship, 52-38.
Three different Argonauts scored in double
figures opposite none for Reavis with Morris
Woods’ 17 points topping all others … One
day after shooting just 30.8 percent from the
field, Carl Sandburg converted at a 57.8 percent clip in cruising to a 67-44 victory over
Leyden. Four Sandburg players, including
three off the bench, tallied no less than 10
points with Michael Schneider (14 points)
pacing the attack. Fahad Nazir also was
a key contributor with his 12 assists. Alex
Regalado accounted for better than half of
Leyden’s point total with his 23 markers …
Chicago Christian’s Andy Stuursma broke
one record and came close to a second in
his team’s 69-62 win over Private School
League foe Walther Lutheran. Stuursma
broke the LCC mark for most free throws in
a game with 18 and came within four points
of the mark for most points in a single game
with his 42. Walther tried to counter with
three Broncos in double figures topped by
Brandon Smith’s 18 points … Plainfield
Central jumped out to a 32-19 halftime lead
and then hung on to defeat Southwest Prairie Conference mate Romeoville, 57-50, for
the large school championship. Jeff Allen
(16 points, 15 rebounds) took care of business in the early going for the winners with
Deadre Owens (14 points) cleaning things
up late. Romeoville’s Demarius Miller led
all scorers for the third game in a row with
his 18 points … Providence St. Mel got all
of its points out of its starting five with four
tallying at least 10 to claim the small school
championship over Westmont, 62-54.
Phil Jackson (21 points, 9 rebounds) just
missed a double-double for the winners,
who got one from Marc Mack (10 points, 10
rebounds). Westmont’s Tyler Pierce authored
his third double-double of the tournament with
his 22 points and 10 rebounds.
FOURTH-DAY ACTION
Hinsdale South opened up a 30-16 halftime
lead and never looked back in a 56-40 win over
Montini Catholic to open up the final day. Hinsdale South’s Garrett Vanhal (20 points) and
Lavonte Brown (12 points) nearly outscored
the Broncos by themselves. Jordan Werner
was the lone Montini player to net more than
eight points, finishing with 11 … Reavis used
a team effort to defeat Joliet Catholic, 49-44,
and capture tournament consolation thirdplace honors. All seven Rams who played
scored with each of them contributing to the
team’s overall 53.8 percent shooting percentage from the field. Nabil Fokaha led the
way with 13 points with Richard Thomas
one off that mark. Dan Dispenza closed out
a solid tournament for himself with his third
double-double, outscoring (23 points) and outrebounding (10 boards) everyone who played
… Alex Regalado’s driving jumper with 0.6
seconds to play made a winner of Leyden over
Walther Lutheran, 50-48, in the tournament’s
seventh-place game. Regalado registered
12 rebounds and 16 points on the day, or one
point less than teammate Anthony Cushion.
Walther Lutheran’s Brandon Smith led all

scorers with 22 points … Carl Sandburg
pulled away from Chicago Christian in the
fourth quarter to land a 61-34 victory and
tournament fifth-place honors. Michael
Schneider and Mitch Thompson tied
for game-high scoring honors with 12
points each for the winning Eagles. For
the Knights, who shot a tournament-low
21.1 percent from the field (12-of-57), only
one player – Andy Stuursma (9 points)
– produced more than six points … Argo
dominated Lisle to claim the tournament
consolation championship, limiting the
Lions to just nine first-half points and 17
points through three quarters in an eventual
50-28 victory. Morris Woods keyed the
Argonauts’ third straight victory with his 20
points and 10 rebounds. Godfrey Brown
contributed another 16 markers. Tyler Triplett netted 10 points for Lisle … Westmont
and Romeoville helped tie a tournament
record by playing in the Classic’s sixth overtime game in the tournament third-place
contest. Westmont finally prevailed in the

another first-teamer, paced Providence St.
