Specialized programs & options We offer a wide array of specialized programs taught by internationally trained teachers in our long-running and successful International Baccalaureate and Mandarin programs. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme follows an international curriculum that is taught in over 146 countries and transferable around the world. The programme promotes critical thinking, well roundedness and balance for students. It is a two-year course of study that positions you for success at university anywhere in the world. Grade 10 students complete pre-IB courses before entering into the full programme in Grades 11 and 12. • IB teachers have received extra training . • IB students can choose to use IB OR Alberta marks to gain entrance to university. • IB students consistently score well on university entrance exams such as the SAT exam. • IB students have higher acceptance, success and retention rates at universities than non-IB students. While this course includes the five areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening and representing, there is an emphasis on the analysis of literature. Analytical writing and critical thinking are major components of this course pathway. This pathway is for students who are not planning on attending university. While there is a focus on persuasive and functional writing, the course includes work in all six areas of the English Language Arts Program: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Some programs at NAIT and MacEwan, for instance, accept students who take English 10-2, 20-2 and 30-2. “M.E. This course pathway will help you to develop an understanding of the world. If you’re considering a career in social services, or aspire to become a healthcare worker, newscaster or would like to work for municipal or provincial government, then Social Studies 10-2 is the course for you! People who work in social science and social service careers have flexibility in their thinking, an interest in problem solving and a willingness to ask questions and listen. M.E. Take this course and you will not only learn Math 10C, but gain selfconfidence and increase your academic success through this 10-credit Math 10C Transitions class. During the first semester, you will challenge the Math 10-3 curriculum as well as work on essential math skills needed to succeed in Math 10C. During the second semester, you will start to challenge Math 10C. Students in this pathway will study quadratic functions and equations, trigonometry, radicals and rational expressions, sequences and series. Students in 30-1 will study trigonometry, relations and functions, permutations, combinations and binomial theorem. This skill-building pathway is designed to prepare you for everyday challenges you face in math. Learn how to get the best deals when you go shopping, redecorate a room in your house, budget for your dream vacation and so much more. This course is also ideal for students wishing to enter the trades. We’ll help prepare you for those apprenticeship exams. Math 10-3 and Math 20-3 meet the minimum math required for an Alberta High School Diploma. Math 20-2, 30-2 course pathway (5 credits each) Math 31 – Calculus (5 credits) Recommended: 60% in Math 10C Recommended: 60% in Math 30-1 or concurrent registration in Math 30-1. The 20-2 and 30-2 courses are for students who plan to enter post-secondary studies that will not require calculus, such as nursing, education, arts, fine arts, music, and physical education programs. Students in this pathway will study deductive and inductive reasoning, statistics, trigonometry and algebra. Students in 30-2 will study logical reasoning, probability, relations and functions and complete a mathematics research project. The Math 31 course is designed to introduce students to the mathematical methods of calculus. The majority of students taking Math 31 plan to attend post-secondary studies. “I like M.E. Science 10 Transitions (10 credits) Prerequisite: 50-60% in Science 9 and Math 9 Are you looking forward to taking 20-level science courses but need support to develop the necessary skills? Science 10 Transitions can provide you with an opportunity to develop key science and math skills before challenging Science 10 and allows you to have extended time to work on Science 10 course material. During the first semester, you’ll work on your science and math skills while preparing for success in Science 10. The second semester continues with the Science 10 curriculum with additional support to prepare you to challenge your choice of 20-level science courses. M.E. Having a basic understanding of how chemicals interact with each other, how your body works and how basic machines operate, will help you increase your level of safety and confidence and your ability to make educated decisions for your life. Explore the worlds of chemistry, physics and biology. Take a glimpse at how the human species affects the ecosystems of the globe. Enjoy the world of experimentation and exploration as you start to understand the basic workings of the things around you. Science 14 and Science 24 meet the minimum science required for an Alberta High School Diploma. 11 Header Text Science Science 20, 30 course pathway (5 credits each) Chemistry 20, 30 course pathway (5 credits each) Prerequisite: 50% in Science 10 Recommended: 60% in Science 10 Prerequisite: Math 10C The Science 20 and 30 program is for those who want a general science background without taking many courses. It is highly recommended for those who have an interest in the arts, N.A.I.T. programs or nursing. Science 20 takes you into the depths of chemistry, physics, biology and geology. Learn how we use chemical reactions to create consumer products you enjoy, how to navigate in a two-dimensional world and then how to analyze car crashes. Learn what factors determine the survival of species and the impact humans have. Finally, explore how we uncovered the Earth’s history by studying rocks. Science 30 is a diploma-level course that may be used for admission into some post-secondary programs. The course expands on the concepts and skills introduced in Science 10 and 20. The themes of this course revolve around how societies obtain and use energy and affect global systems. The units covered in this course include: Living Systems Respond to their Environment, Chemistry and the Environment, Electromagnetic Energy, and Energy and the Environment. Biology 20, 30 course pathway (5 credits each) Recommended: 60% in Science 10 Biology 20 takes an in-depth look into how energy and matter are obtained and used within organisms and ecosystems as a whole. The units studied in this course are: Energy and Matter Exchange in the Biosphere, Ecosystem and Population Change, Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration and Human Systems. Biology 30 explores the themes of change, diversity, equilibrium and systems. Discover how your body regulates in changing environments. Learn about reproduction, inheritance and DNA. Finally, learn what factors cause changes within this world’s many populations and communities. Biology 30 is a prerequisite for many post-secondary programs. It also has a diploma exam at the end of the course. 12 Chemistry 20 students explore the structure and behaviour of matter as it forms and changes. They learn why substances have the properties they have and how to predict that a substance may react with others. The units taught in this course are: Diversity of Matter and Chemical Change, Forms of Matter as Gases, Matter as Solutions, and Quantitative Relationships in Chemical Changes. In Chemistry 30, students learn about the following topics: Thermochemistry, Electrochemical Changes, Organic Chemistry and Chemical Equilibrium. Explore the energy associated with chemical reactions. Learn how a battery works. Look at the many ways we use fossil fuels. Learn why one acid or base is stronger than another. Chemistry 30 is a prerequisite for many post-secondary programs. It has a diploma exam at the end of the course. Physics 20, 30 course pathway (5 credits each) Recommended: 60% in Science 10 Prerequisite: Math 10C Physics 20 students learn to describe and explain why things move the way that they do. Then they are introduced to concepts of energy. The units covered in this course are: Kinematics, Dynamics, Periodic Motion and Conservation of Energy. In Physics 30, students learn about the following topics: Momentum and Impulse, Forces and Fields, Electromagnetic Radiation and Atomic Physics. Explore how to analyze car crashes and explosions. Learn how electricity works. Get a deeper understanding of magnetism and light. Then, finally, look into the world of the very small to discover what makes up matter in our universe. Physics 30 is a prerequisite for many post-secondary programs. It has a diploma exam at the end of the course. M.E. LAZERTE SCHOOL • 2016 - 2017 High School Program Guide Languages other than English Chinese Language & Culture 10-3Y, 20-3Y, 30-3Y (5 credits each) These courses will offer you a good look at China’s unique ancient history and its modern-day development. You will meet new friends, experience a new culture and, at the same time, learn conversational Chinese. The IB course will fast-track students to a higher level of proficiency in language acquisition. There are also International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme sections of this course. Chinese Language & Culture 10-6Y, 20-6Y, 30-6Y (5 credits each) Prerequisite: Chinese 7–9 In these courses you will become more confident using the language. You will have the chance to speak, write, read, create multimedia presentations and perform in Chinese. Different cultural activities will also keep your learning interesting. In the future, your language skills will help you become highly competitive in the global job market. Chinese Language Arts 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Prerequisite: Chinese Language Arts 9 These courses will allow you to explore many aspects of this unique language. After studying varied themes, such as sports, travel, holidays and relationships, your Chinese language skills will become more sophisticated. French 10-3Y, 20-3Y, 30-3Y (5 credits each) Your adventure in learning French begins here! In this course, you will gain a cultural understanding of la francophonie that will allow you to communicate in French perhaps while traveling or while pursuing an interesting career. There are also International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme sections of this course. French 10-9Y, 20-9Y, 30-9Y (5 credits each) Prerequisite: French 9 Continue your journey in French as you develop your language skills and cultural knowledge while studying activities, shopping, vacations and fine arts. From a fashion designer to a politician, and any profession in between, speaking French gives you an edge in finding the ultimate career. Spanish 10-3Y, 20-3Y, 30-3Y (5 credits each) You will learn about the rich and diverse culture of numerous Spanish-speaking countries in the world as you learn expressions and vocabulary related to introductions, descriptions of family and friends, preferences, sport and leisure activities, clothing, food, school, and select holidays and celebrations. Spanish 10-6Y, 20-6Y, 30-6Y (5 credits each) Prerequisite: Spanish 9 Use your Spanish language skills confidently, and hold more meaningful conversations. Your cultural exploration will include authentic literary works, real-life scenarios, arts and entertainment. You will understand and share your opinion about the rich and diverse culture of numerous Spanish-speaking countries in the world. M.E. Daily active living is the theme and explored through four main outcomes: movement activities, health benefits, interacting positively with others and personal responsibility. Students will also learn about healthy eating through a nutrition module. If you are interested in increasing your fitness to improve your performance on a sports team or just to look and feel better, CrossFit is for you. This introductory CrossFit class will teach you many full body movements that will increase your strength, flexibility, power and stamina. Every level of fitness is welcome, and we guarantee you will see significant improvements in your fitness goals. Come see what all the craze is about! Soccer Physical Education 10, 20, 30 (7 credits each) 16 Students will receive soccer instruction that covers the curriculum outcomes and credit completion of Physical Education 10. Student training includes a focus on tactical and technical activities. The focus will be on individual soccer skills, and students will advance their knowledge of working in a team environment. Students registered in the course will receive a full uniform (jersey, shorts and socks). They will also receive extra instruction relating to nutrition and coaching. Functional Fitness 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Healthy Living Physical Education 10, 20, 30 (Girls phys-ed) (6 credits) Sport Medicine 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Do you want to learn how to live a healthy life through physical activity and nutrition but don’t like traditional phys-ed? Then healthy living girls phys-ed is for you! This class will focus less on team sports and more on individual wellness and healthy living. Girls will have the opportunity to learn how to be healthy while participating in fitness activities including yoga, circuit training, and more. Students can also provide input into activities that interest them and learn about healthy eating through a nutrition module. These courses will introduce students to the world of sports medicine and allow them to explore the prevention, immediate care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. Students will get hands-on experience in sports first aid and taping and strapping while learning the functions and purpose of the musculoskeletal system. Sports Medicine 15 is a great introduction course for students thinking of a medical career. In these courses, you’ll learn about fundamental training principles, proper nutrition and sports psychology. These courses provide a great opportunity for students to get in better physical shape and improve their health-related knowledge while participating in a variety of fitness activities. LAZERTE SCHOOL • 2016 - 2017 High School Program Guide 17 Visual and Performing Arts Dance Dance 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) The introductory course is designed for students with little or no dance training. Students will explore a wide range of dance styles including jazz, modern, ballet, tap, hip hop and folk dance. These dance styles will be studied in a practical format where students learn new steps and choreography. Students will also learn about each dance style and its history, theory, and terminology. At the end of the semester, dance students participate in a showcase. Drama Advanced Acting 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Prerequisite: Concurrently enrolled in Drama 10 or instructor permission Advanced Acting 15 students join with Advanced Acting 25 and 35 students to form an ensemble. Advanced Acting 15 is geared to the Grade 10 student keen to perform in productions to enrich their class work. The main stage production takes place in early December and M.E. LaZerte’s One Act Play Festival in early April. The rehearsals and classes run Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Drama 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) You will learn the skills needed in performance: stage combat, improvisation, speech, theatre studies, technical theatre and basic acting. Students intending to continue to Drama 20 and 30 are strongly encouraged to take Drama 10 for 5 credits. Note: Drama 10 IB is a 5-credit course. Students that cannot fit Drama 10 IB into their schedule may be able to enrol in an after-school section of the course that meets with the Advanced Acting 15 class. There are also International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme sections of this course. 18 Musical Theatre 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Recommendation: Co-registration in choir or dance These classes are for students at all grade levels—whether you’re a novice or experienced—focusing on singing, dancing and acting in the musical theatre genre. The courses will emphasize rehearsal discipline, risk-taking, and working together to perform a final show in the theatre. Music Audio and Video 15, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Audio and Video is a new program that focuses on songwriting, electronic music, recording, and live sound at the 15 level. Various elements of the entertainment business are explored, such as band management, promotions and live radio. Students learn how to create their own music using computer programs and keyboards as well as live instruments and recording. In the 25- and 35-level courses, students will learn about video production. They’ll create exciting projects with video, sound track recording, and editing. Choral Music 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Singers have the power to make people happy, to celebrate success and connect with an audience. If you want to be part of an amazing team, then these courses are for you! Choral Music 10 focuses on vocal skill development, ear training, theory, sight-reading, rhythm and performance. Your singing voice will become fuller. You will learn basic piano skills and gain songwriting technique. Take the chance with choral music. Participate in concerts, special events, festivals and music trips! Drum Line (General Music Drum Line) 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Drum line teaches students to read rhythms and play multiple percussion instruments. Classes will focus on traditional drum line techniques with snare, bass drum, tenor drums, and cymbals. Students will also learn some Latin percussion rhythms and drum set techniques. Learn to play your favorite songs, read music, jam with other people, and even write some songs of your own. Instrumental Jazz 15*, 25, 35 (5 credits each) Prerequisite: Junior high band experience or training on piano or violin Through the exploration of jazz music, students gain insight into the creative world of improvising and performing within traditional jazz styles. Students learn a variety of pieces ranging from pop, to Latin, to traditional jazz. Several pieces will include a vocalist also! The typical instruments in jazz band are wind instruments, piano, guitar, bass, and percussion. These exciting courses will give you the foundation to pursue post-secondary jazz studies or a career in the music industry. The Jazz Band will rehearse twice a week after school—Monday and Thursday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Visual Arts Art 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Art 10 is an introductory course in the visual arts for all students regardless of their ability levels. Art courses allow students to experiment with a variety of techniques and materials within teacher-directed projects. Students will work to develop strong technical skills in drawing, painting, and 3D media. Drawing 15, 25, 35 Advanced Techniques (5 credits each) Recommendation: Co-registration in Art 10 These unique courses focus on the development of strong drawing skills. Students will use a variety of methods and materials to develop self-confidence, creative thinking and technical skill. Students will learn to draw highly realistic objects and portraits and do figure studies. They will begin to develop a portfolio of excellent work that can be used for entry to post-secondary art programs. These 6-credit courses will give you the chance to learn and perform manicures, discover makeup artistry and skin care concepts, and become skilled at hair braiding techniques and the manipulation of hot tools. Cosmetology 10 offers many different opportunities to explore career paths in cosmetology or learn new skills. These courses are offered as a 22-credit CTS option through which you will gain the first year of technical training for your beauty certification. If you’re interested in learning to write or get better at programming, this is the course for you. Use problem-solving skills to write programs that create solutions for the world’s problems and learn how to build and command robots. Pre-engineering 15, 25, 35 (Electro-Technology and Design) (6 credits each) Co-requisite: Math 10C Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) are vital to the future. In our current technological age, STEM jobs are some of the best options for careers. In this course, you will learn about the fundamentals of good design and apply this to various design challenges. You will learn about robotics and their importance in our world as you build and design a robot of your own. You will also gain important soldering skills as your assemble electronic circuits while learning the theory behind how they function. Students in this course are expected to have strong math skills and work well independently. Graphic Design 10, 20, 30 (6 credits each) You are the creator, the designer, the storyteller, and the presenter. These courses place your passion for everything creative into our unique and highly specialized Digital Arts & Graphic Design Program. Using our commercial kitchen, students will be exposed to various techniques and practical applications of the food and hospitality industry. If you are looking to pursue a career in the tourism, hospitality or food industry or just love food, then this is the course for you! From using hand tools to power tools, you will develop lifelong skills and acquire construction techniques in a fully-equipped construction lab. You’ve heard the term “hands on” and in construction, we mean it! Your family will be impressed when they see the amazing creations you bring home. If you are curious about the many pathways a career in the trades could take you and want less theory, more application, this course is for you. You will experience auto body, concrete construction, plumbing, electrical, wall finishing and welding trades. Mechanics 10, 20, 30 (6 credits each) Fashion Studies 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Fashion studies allows students to study current trends as they create and make alterations. No experience is necessary, but the experiences you gain may just lead you to an exciting career in fashion. Interested in vehicles and automotives? Mechanics will help you develop skill in servicing vehicles and an understanding of how to buy, sell and insure vehicles. Welding 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) We are thrilled to offer a state-of-the-art welding program. Whether you want to explore the trade, develop skills or secure employment after high school, check it out! Nursing Pre-Nursing 10, 20, 30 (5 credits each) Do you like helping people? Are you interested in working in hospital or health-care centre? Pre-nursing is an opportunity to explore not only nursing but all healthcare related fields. You can work after school or on weekends, in positions with fast food restaurants, retail or grocery stores, warehouses, daycares or virtually any paid or volunteer workplace. Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) M.E. LaZerte is proud of the partnerships with community employers supporting our young apprentices. You have a chance to complete your high school diploma, earn a competitive wage and begin a registered apprenticeship in a skilled trade: all before you graduate! S Classes include Math 10-3S, English 10-2S, Science 14S and Social 10-2S. S Classes are taught in a structured environment by teachers who show students how to practice strategies to improve their learning and meet their personal and academic goals. Students are focused on earning a diploma and complete the -2 curriculum. Math 10C Transitions (10 credits) Prerequisite: 50% in Math 9 Did you pass Math 9, but found it difficult? Take this course and you will learn Math 10C topics and gain self-confidence while increasing your academic success through this transitions class. Each course is assigned a number of credits (usually 3 or 5), and credits can only be earned once in any course. A prerequisite is something you need to do or know before doing or learning something else. Most Grade 11 and 12 courses have prerequisites. In most cases, you need to earn a grade of at least 50% in a prerequisite course to take the next course in a sequence. You need to meet course requirements and have 100 credits to graduate from high school. For example, you’ll need at least 50% in Social Studies 10-1 to take Social Studies 20-1.
