Affiliated with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Live in Madrid Madrid is worthy to be lived! Madrid is the capital and the largest city of Spain. Madrid is a lively city with atmospheres for any kind of person.Madrid is able to offer countless opportunities to enjoy a great experience: Cultural heritage, weather and gastronomy are just a few of the reasons which make visitors come to Madrid. As it is well connected by public transport, visitors are able to visit the surrounding neighborhoods, villages and towns which some of them are among the cultural heritage UNESCO towns. It has a dry climate with little rainfall, resulting in hot summers and cold winters, but no matter what time of the year you chose to come, you are very likely to see with your own eyes the famous blue sky Velázquez loved to paint. Spring Autumn You will find the city’s trees and parks blooming. The first couple of months tend to bring rain, with an average temperature of 12ºC (54ºF) in April, but as the month of May progresses the weather becomes almost summery with an average temperature of 21ºC (70ºF) in June and increasingly livelier streets. In October, autumn in Madrid is very mild, but as November progresses temperatures drop and rainfall becomes more frequent; the last two months of the year generally being the wettest. The average temperature falls from 15ºC (59ºF) in October to 7ºC (45ºF) in December. Even so, this is an ideal time to enjoy El Retiro park bathed in shades of red and ochre. Summer Winter Summers are dry and can be very hot, with an average temperature of 25ºC (77ºF) in July and August. During these months, it gets dark late and the city really starts to come alive in the evening. In August, the city is much quieter since a large number of Madrileños tend to go away on holiday. At the end of the month, and during September, the temperatures cool down significantly. Winters in Madrid are cold and dry. Although it doesn’t tend to snow it can do so at the end of December or in January, the coldest month of the year, when the average temperature is 6ºC (43ºF). Nevertheless, cloudless skies are very common during this time, so you won’t miss out on the warm and pleasant midday sun. Climate: Continental Mediterranean Average Temperature: 12ºC. Summer: 24ºC-35ºC Winter: 4º-5ºC Culture You can visit the most important museums of Madrid (The Prado Museum, The Thyssen - Bornemisza, The Reina Sofía and the National Art Centre) along The Paseo del Prado avenue which was extended in the 19th century into the Paseo de la Castellana. These paseos, lined with shady paths and embellished with gardens, monumental fountains and grand squares have remained prestigious places. The remains of the Buen Retiro, the old royal palace, now house museums. In addition to being home to one of the world’s greatest art galleries, the range of museums and monuments on offer in the Madrid region goes much further than the well-known and deservedly admired galleries located in the “Paseo del Arte” The broad and varied range of art on offer in the region includes everything from prehistoric rock paintings through to the most avant-garde works of modern art, in addition to the ever more popular museums on science, technology, anthropology and history. Madrid also has a leisurely commercial lifestyle and daydreaming at a terrace café or lounging with a cocktail in a classy bar is probably the most widely practised pastime of the Spanish capital. Madrid’s shopping culture, which is dominated by ritzy boutiques and designer stores, also includes city’s famous flea markets. This open-air spectacles interweaves sellers of fake antiques, groceries, reproductions, used books and great deals on cheap items. If you wish to experience the city’s old-world charms and see for yourself what Hemingway saw in the city, a visit to one of Madrid’s literary cafés is a must. It is here that intellectuals, artists, and a great deal of the idle and pretentious ‘artistic’ elite come for a laid-back chat or to hold social gatherings. Having originated in the 19th Century, the ‘literary cafés’ became a traditional pastime by the 1930s. Transport Travelling in Madrid is one of the most enjoyable parts of stay. The City is most adequately interconnected with many underground subway lines (Metro) and more than 200 buses (EMT) running daily on routes around Madrid area. To travel in Madrid, you have to buy Metro/Bus passes. There are many versions of these as per your availability and usage. 1. 1 journey Pass 2. 10 journey trip Pass 3. Monthly Pass 4. Anual Pass Entertainment Madrid has more than 40 carefully maintained parks, with small ponds and perfectly green lawns stretching as far as the eye can see. The city’s main park, El Retiro, boasts the astonishing Crystal Palace, located beside a large boating lake inhabited by ducks and black swans. It regularly plays host to exhibitions of Modern art. The Royal Botanical Garden is another favourite refuge for the locals. Situated next door to the Prado Museum, it’s a maze of exotic palm-lined paths, terraces and neatly arranged stretches of grass. The garden holds representatives of plant species from five continents. You can admire Chinese peonies, soapbark trees from Chile, irises from South Africa, rhododendrons from Korea and Japan, exotic fruit trees, herbs and vegetables as well as a wide variety of wild roses. Needless to say, the best time to visit is spring and summer, when all of the plants and flower explode in a colourful pandemonium of scent. A traditionally popular form of entertainment in Madrid is bullfighting, drawing tourists and locals alike. The city’s Plaza de Las Ventas is the secondlargest bullfighting ring in the world. Since 1931 it has hosted the controversial spectacles that are widely recognised as a symbol of Spanish culture. Among football fans, the Spanish capital is known primarily as the hometown of two famous teams, Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. Though the locals divide into two groups supporting either one of the other of the teams, every visiting football fan shouldn’t miss the opportunity.
