MUNICIPALITY OF THE DISTRICT OF LUNENBURG NOTICE: PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETING BLOCKHOUSE Proposed Amendments. “Restricted Developments” in the Blockhouse Plan Area. The Municipality’s Planning & Development Services will be conducting a Public Information Meeting on Tuesday October 7th, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. at the Blockhouse Fire Hall, 510 Highway #325, Blockhouse. Municipal planning staff will present proposed amendments to the Blockhouse Planning Strategy & Land Use By-law that would alter existing requirements that allow for identified “Restricted Developments” to be permitted in the Blockhouse Plan Area, by way of Development Agreement. Proposed policy changes would introduce the idea of certain uses being prohibited from the Blockhouse Plan Area, and other identified uses being required to meet additional setback requirements. This amendment was discussed at a local Blockhouse Area Advisory Committee meeting on August 12, and at the Municipality’s Planning Advisory Committee meeting on August 28th. Both Committees have recommended that a Public Information Meeting be held in the community, to solicit possible public input, before further consideration by Council. The purpose of the October 7th meeting is to present information, and will not involve any final decision. For further information, contact Douglas Reid, Planner at (902) 530-3480, or by e-mail: [email protected]. Page 6 The Lighthouse Log, Thursday, October 2, 2014 Dog walking behaviours studied I t probably won’t surprise most dog owners that dogs tend to be more aggressive when on a leash and/or when being walked by a male. A study from Mendel University in the Czech Republic looked at more than 1,800 interactions between dogs during their walks. The researchers cataloged the effects of age, sex, size and who was walking the dog. It was determined that dogs in general are friendlier when a woman is holding the leash. Dogs were four times more likely to bite or attack other dogs when walked by men. Dogs are skilled at interpreting human social and communication behaviours and it is thought that the male walkers are more likely to use strength to control their pet whereas women walkers rely more on training techniques. The dogs may mimic the control style of their walker. It was also found that leashed dogs were twice as likely to threaten another dog as ones off-leash did. Dogs like to run around each other and give each other a good sniff when they meet. The leash stifles this ability and researchers believe this makes the dog feel frustrated and threatened, which results in the aggression. This behaviour can be observed daily at your local beach or park. Dogs on leashes when passing each other are likely to bark and lunge. Those who are off leash will more likely circle each other, sniff and either walk away or start to play. The aggressive behaviours of dogs on leash are also evident in dogs that are crated or behind a fence. They are more likely to bark and growl when they are confined. Being confined or leashed takes away their ability to choose between fight or flight. Dogs and many other animals, including humans, can become fearful and hostile when they do not have control over their own decisions. Unsurprisingly, male dogs preferred sniffing female dogs. Dogs threatened same-gender dogs almost three times as often, and bit them over five times as often as opposite sex dogs. The study found that female canines enjoyed playing with both sexes but that male dogs prefer to play with females. This makes sense say the researchers, because females rear the puppies and play is part of her nurturing technique. Therefore, instinctively, female dogs are more genetically predisposed to not discriminate between genders. Puppies were also found to be more playful with each other than older dogs, especially senior ones. During a study at the University of Missouri, walking was also found to be important for dogs’ overall behaviour. Dogs in a shelter were randomly selected for five walks a week by elderly volunteers while the control group was left in their kennels. Impressively, 75 per cent of the walked dogs were adopted into permanent homes vs. 35 per cent of those not walked. The walked dogs were calmer and friendlier and their walkers realized improved fitness. Be aware of your style when walking your dog and you may find it positively affects your dog’s behaviour, but remember to observe leash regulations too. Encouragement feels good. Encouragement can be motivational. Encouragement can be the key to a win-win in many areas of life, whether it’s work, school, or family. With all those positive effects, encouragement is a useful skill to develop. You’ll notice that I said, “skill to develop.” Doesn’t everyone know what encouragement is and how to give it? Surprisingly not. Have you ever offered encouragement to someone, only to be informed that they don’t need your help, thank you very much? Or come away feeling that your encouraging words were perceived as condescending, or were met with anger, resentment, or simply not appreciated? Why do some folks respond negatively to encouragement? After all, you are only trying to help them. Take a look at this example: Do you see any possibilities for why this encouragement might not be effective? Reality Check Maurice has tried to encourage his son to take a more active role in sports. Maurice says, “I tell him all the time, ‘Get out there. You can do it! You can do it!,’ but he doesn’t try. He gets discouraged and walks away. His favourite saying seems to be, ‘No, I can’t.’” Why might Maurice’s encouragement not be working as he hoped? First, for any encouragement to be effective, it’s important that the person want, for themselves, whatever they are being encouraged to do. A good question for Maurice’s son is, “Do you want to be more involved in sports?” Listen carefully to the answer. Many children (and grownups) have a highly developed skill of telling people what they think you want to hear. If that’s been the norm in your relationship, and if you now really want to hear the truth, you will need to listen closely, keeping your judgments and opinions to yourself. Second, can Maurice’s son, in fact, do it? If you don’t have a skill, then no amount of chanting, “I can do it, I can do it,” will make it true. If the son wants to develop skills, then a more encouraging act for Maurice would be to find ways to make that happen, such as through extra practice, improved coaching and so on. Working on the skill itself, especially if Maurice works with him, can be much more encouraging than enthusiastic words which are essentially no more than wishful thinking. One characteristic of effective encouragement is honesty. Does SuSanne Beck Page 11 A delicious idea I t was one year ago that I went to the Nova Scotia Community College — Lunenburg Campus, where all of the South Shore was invited and people were asked, “What will you do to chart our own course as we, as a region, navigate our ship into uncharted waters?” That was a challenge set out by us at Lighthouse Media Group, and all community newspapers, who funded and founded the Georgetown Conference in an attempt to redefine and revitalize rural Atlantic Canada. I was sitting in the audience after learning about more than a dozen good ideas which were generated by community members in café-style discussions. A woman stood up and announced her table came up with the idea of initiating a squash festival in Bridgewater as a way to bring people to the area to showcase the produce (not the sport), a resource we grow plentifully, but that isn’t as sexy as, say, the strawberry. As the tables were announcing their ideas, this enthusiastic, fearless woman convinced a room full of people that, in less than a years time, she and a feisty bunch of local food enthusiasts would pull this off. Pull it off they did, as this past weekend, everywhere I turned, squash in every shape and colour were on display in and around Bridgewater. The savory vegetable was served up in ice cream, wrapped in bacon, in dog treats, and even in soap. It was so much fun to be a part of this event, but perhaps even more impressive was seeing this evolve from a nugget of an idea into something fantastic. Call it a crush if you wish, but I am a fan of Elspeth McLean Wile. It was Elspeth’s team who brought this about, and while for the most part it was held at her farm market in Wileville, she brought in partnerships such as Cilantro — a very cool kitchen supply store in the area — she invited talented local chefs and helped cross-promote the Afterglow Festival. People might have gone to Wile’s Lake Farm Market for the delicious samples and some of their date squares, but I bumped into a Squashtastic goer at the drug store, and also at Frenchy’s later that afternoon. These opportunities benefit us all, and we need more of them. We need more ideas large and small. We need more Elspeth McLean Wiles; people to stand up like she did that day 10 months ago in a room full of other people and say, “This is what I’m prepared to do. I’m going to take a risk, and work a little harder, and we’re going to do this.” One thing that I’m sure Elspeth would say is that she didn’t do this alone. Lots of people stepped up to help, and I suspect if I, or any of you for that matter, took a leap of faith, there would be people to stand behind us. This weekend inspired me to take a risk and put myself out there. But not today. I have a squash strudel to make.
