There are financial resources — money in the bank and those toonies in your pocket. Companies refer to human resources — employees with skills and knowledge who make the company work. If you live in a rural area, it’s likely that you, or someone you know, has a stack of scrap wood in the shed. In the house, there’s probably a collection of fabric suttles and spare buttons. One definition of a resource is “a source of supply in reserve.” You might not think of those scraps as resources, but that’s what they are, and when you need a shim, it’s nice to be able to go to the “resource pile” and get one. If only the scrap wood pile could serve as an all-purpose resource! However, different situations call for different resources. Personal probReality lems, relationship problems, emotional problems — they call for emotional resources. If you have ever felt at the end of your emotional tether, then you know why it would be helpful to have a stack of emotional resources in reserve. So, what are some emotional resources? Here’s a start: Optimism, gratitude, satisfaction, faith, joy, pride, cheerfulness, courage, confidence, hope, resilience, trust, and so on. Some people seem to effortlessly fill their lives with those resources. Others can hardly imagine a life where those feelings would play a significant role in their lives. If you are in the second group, do you want to make a change? Men’s Drop in Basketball — 7:309 p.m., Tuesdays to end of May, Bayview Community School. Writing with Capt. Robert Louis Boudreau — 7-8:30 p.m., April 8-May 27, 8 weeks, Mahone Bay Centre. Chair Yoga — 10-11 a.m., Mondays and/ or Fridays, until March 23, Mahone Bay Centre. SuSanne Beck HUNTERSTON FARM Tractor Parts and Repair All Makes and Models te hun town of mahone bay 902-541-1343 According to choice theory, emotion is led by action. So if you want to change your feelings, the route to change is through what you are doing. Try focusing on one positive resource you’d like to build, and work on actions that can cause it. For example, say you want to build a stronger sense of gratitude. Develop a practice of taking actions — even small actions — that invoke the feeling of appreciation and gratitude in you. Because choice theory also suggests that satisfaction comes through relationships, try finding opportunities to appreciate people to build that sense of gratitude. For example, build a snow critter with your children and appreciate their creativity. Take a walk with your neighbour and appreciate the natural beauty around you. Cook a meal with your partner and appreciate the taste and texture of every bit of the food. Read a poem Check to your friend and appreciate the sound and flow of the words. Smile at a stranger and appreciate their response. If that’s a little too touch-feely for you, then deliberately look for something to appreciate in a difficult situation. For example, I’ve recently developed a pretty strong sense of appreciation for the snow blower. Which emotional resource do you most want to build? Can you come up with actions to take so as to increase that emotion in your life? Let me know at [email protected] or by mail c/o Lighthouse Log. To your choices! I followed the link to the website to read a review of a book produced by artist Johanna Basford called “Secret Garden,” which is full of spectacular line-art drawings compiled together in a book for, get this, adult colourers. Apparently, adult colouring is a new trend creating a market for sophisticated colouring books for adults. Who knew? This may very well have been the first time I had ever heard of anyone over the age of 10 admit that they love to colour, but I have to say, colouring is kind of awesome. I remember when my kids were young and they would ask to me colour with them and I would be down on the floor colouring superheroes with broken Cray- ola crayons long after the kids moved on to another task. And admit it, you probably did too. Colouring is just relaxing, it can take no real thought, it creates no stress and it’s pretty easy. The article’s author, Kelsey Campbell-Dollaghan, in my opinion, identified perfectly what it is about colouring that is so appealing for adults. Colouring is nostalgic. We remember colouring as kids, long before we had mortgages, jobs and the stresses that we have in life. Even reading the article made me want to colour; so much so that I clicked the link to buy the book. However, I wanted the book now, not in seven to 10 business days. So, what would be the odds of reading an article about this really random book and it being at my local Coles bookstore in the Bridgewater Mall? There was only one way to find out. I snapped one up, as well as the book, “Persuasion” by Arleen Dickenson — a book I had been eyeing for awhile — and made my way to the counter to pay. There, I happened to find my new friend, John from Tancook Island. I remembered John from my last trip to the bookstore and he remembered me, and he even told me how much he enjoys my column. John is a big advocate for Tancook Island, the place he calls home during the summer with his wife, and he encouraged me to experience the magic the Island has to offer for myself. I had a lovely time, right there in Coles, something that I would never have experienced had I bought the book on-line, which is just another reason of many to support local. As an aside, let me just say, I cannot wait to explore Tancook Island this summer. I’ve never been there before, but you can expect to read about it here. Now, back to my colouring book. I got it home and marveled at the beautiful illustrations. It is art on it’s own and I worried about wrecking it. I dug out the bucket of coloured pencils the boys use for homework and made my way down memory lane to Grade Primary and began to colour. I won’t deny that it felt a little silly, and the laundry pile taunted me from the laundry room, but I persevered. Art of any kind can soothe the soul and make the heart feel good, just like a nice cup of tea or meeting a new friend. ! Two Locations Serving the South Shore Cuisinox Expresso Coffee Makers ! What’s not to love? Adopt a Senior Cat! HAID is thrilled to tell you all that several cats found forever homes last week. We are so happy for Sandy, one of the three Himalayans that has been waiting a long time was adopted. Hooray for Sandy. Skylar was also adopted to a wonderful family. Clyde has found a wonderful family, too, and SHAID is very happy that Sissy and Bubby could remain together in their new forever home. It is great when people can open their heart and their home to two cats so they remain together. SHAID currently has several senior cats waiting for a loving home. SHAID considers any cat over the age of seven to be a senior. SHAID understands that the correct age to be classed a senior is not seven, but we feel it is an important key to finding a loving home for each senior cat at SHAID. There are many benefits to adopting a senior rather S Seniors at SHAID than a kitten or a young cat. Seniors are settled, over the playful and sometimes destructive stage. They have developed a definitive personality that you can see before you adopt them. SHAID also has a lesser adoption fee for cats over seven years of age. In fact, it is half of the regular adoption fee. SHAID encourages people to consider giving senior cats the loving home they deserve. If healthy, cats will generally live well into their teens, so adopting a senior at SHAID still ensures a lengthy timeframe of love from your new pet. It also ensures a happy and loving retirement for these cats — so at SHAID we ask you to give a senior cat a second look, and a chance to enjoy a families love and affection. Currently at SHAID for seniors is CJ, a 10 year old male cat. CJ is a cream/orange colour and he would love a great retirement home. With the love and patients of SHAID staff, CJ has transformed from a cranky boy to a sweet boy since arriving at SHAID, he is a beautiful boy waiting for someone to adopt and love him. Jack is also 10 years old and he is also a great boy. Jack has a unique personality, he loves people and affection but isn’t all that fussy about other cats. Jack is all black with the odd tuff of white. Jack will be a great companion for a quiet family. Cuddles is a beautiful Himalayan, she is nine years old and does have an issue with using her litter pan. Cuddles does not like out-of-the ordinary or new situations and we feel this is a key factor in her litter pan mishaps. Cuddles also prefers not to be left alone for extended period of time, this can cause her to become stressed. A quiet home will be best for Cuddles. BRIDGE continued from page 7 Bridgewater bridge club results Liana Crossland photo Why You Need Vitamin C and Lysine for Heart Health and More... W. Gifford-Jones, MD V itamin C is arguably the single most important water soluble antioxidant in the human body. Antioxidants play a key role in protecting cells against free radicals, which can cause damage and play a role in heart disease, cancer and other diseases. It’s tragic that researchers are unaware that high doses of vitamin C and lysine cannot only prevent, but reverse atherosclerosis in coronary and other arteries in the body. Vitamin C is needed for the manufacture of collagen, the glue that holds cells together. A lack of vitamin C means poor collagen, resulting in cracks appearing between coronary cells thus setting the stage for fatal blood clot. Recently, Dr. Sydney Bush, an English researcher, made this monumental discovery. He took photos of the retinal arteries and then gave patients 6,000 milligrams of vitamin C and 5,000 of lysine (lysine adds strength to coronary arteries just like steel rods increase the strength of concrete). A year later he repeated the pictures. To his surprise, he found atherosclerosis fading away. Millions of North Americans also suffer from osteoarthritis. Without sufficient vitamin C to produce collagen, a major component of cartilage, bone eventually grinds on bone. There would be fewer joint replacements if more vitamin C were available to produce healthy collagen. due to inadequate amounts of vitamin C. This vitamin is needed in large amounts to produce healthy collagen, the glue that holds cells together and keeps gums healthy. Without good mortar bricks fall apart and the same happens when gums lacking collagen lose their grip on teeth. The essential amino acid lysine is probably best known for its use in those with herpes simplex infections but several other benefits have been ascribed to the molecule, including favourable effects on blood pressure and stroke prevention but also a positive influence on mood and anxiety. In addition to providing healthy collagen production and a healthy cardiovascular system, vitamin C and lysine supplementation helps support: • Immune system health • Vision • Teeth and gums • Wound healing • Bones and cartilage • Recovery from shingles • Recovery from herpes outbreaks This is why I’ve been taking high doses of vitamin C and lysine for the last 16 years following a heart attack. I believe it saved my life. Medi-C Plus™, containing high doses of vitamin C and lysine, is available in powder and capsules. Rheumatoid arthritis, the inflammatory type, also requires large doses of vitamin C. Every moment of the day our bodies are using oxygen to keep us alive. But oxidation results in metabolic ash, known as “free radicals”, which are believed to trigger an inflammatory reaction in joints. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps to reduce damaging free-radicals. Patients often appear surprised when I tell them that vitamin C will help them keep their teeth a lifetime. By age 65 one in five North Americans has lost all their teeth and many of their teeth were normal. Rather, it was the gums that could no longer hold teeth firmly in place in part The Bridgewater bridge club met on March 12 with eight tables in play.
