C I T Y 53 BackRoad A BackRoa BACKROAD ADVENTURES M idwestern Ontario is the heartland of this great province. And its heartbeat is found, not only in the cities of our beautiful region, but in the rolling, peaceful countryside that surrounds each community. While travellers will enjoy the attractions of the larger centres, it would be a great shame if any visitor were to miss the tranquil pleasures of the rural area and small villages. May we suggest two “Backroad Adventures”, inter-connecting itineraries that will introduce you to the delights of rural areas, small towns and friendly cities in this part of Ontario during leisurely car trips that can last a few hours or an enjoyable day. En route, watch for opportunities for road-side treats – many area farmers, including Old Order Mennonites, offer produce, maple syrup, antiques, crafts and even beautiful, hand-crafted quilts to the passer-by. Stratford Route Head east from downtown Stratford – an irresistible locale in its own right – or anywhere along Ontario Street, which becomes Highway 7&8 as you head east. The first community Waterloo County to New Dundee from 401 Waterloo County’s Country Inns are famous for their friendly hospitality and good entertainment–but they’re best known for their food. This unique stop offers trout fishing and more – a great place for a relaxing couple of hours. Now retrace your route north on Road 12, through Petersburg, to St. Agatha – look for the towering church spire. At the stoplight in St. Agatha, turn left again, and you will find yourself between two of the most intriguing dining establishments in the area. On your left is Angie’s Kitchen, an historic, 1854 inn that features fine German cuisine, popular Sunday brunches, and a menu and facilities perfect for any occasion. Meanwhile, on your right is Kennedy’s Tavern, a great Irish country tavern offering a fine, traditional menu and a large helping of historical significance. Kennedy’s is on the Country Traditions Tasting Tour. (You could now continue through to Notre Dame Drive and do the reverse route of the St. Jacob’s Market Route.) St. Jacobs Market Route We’ll start this journey at the St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market and Outlet Mall, at Weber and King Streets, between Waterloo and St. Jacobs. As you leave the Farmers’ Market, heading north toward St. Jacobs, look for the corner of King Street and Road 15, an intersection known as Wagner’s Corners. Turn left on Ament Line, then right on Lavery Road, then left on Buehler Line. Here you will find Marhaven Furniture, a family business run by young craftsmen who know how to make customers happy. Marhaven specializes in solid wood, custommade heirloom furniture at more than competitive prices. They specialize in custom-made bedrooms and china cabinets; they will design and build almost any furniture a customer is seeking. They’re proud of their artistry: “We’ll make it just like they want it; we listen to our customers.” Leaving Marhaven, continue on Buehler Line, and turn left on Manser Road. Turn left again on Ament Line, into Linwood, and look for “Seven Sisters Antiques and Collectables,” the perfect place to shop for gifts for family and friends or just the right item for yourself. Allow plenty of time to browse; there really are seven sisters involved, and each brings her own particular expertise to the enterprise, making for a very eclectic and diverse inventory, from vintage linen to furniture. Retrace your brief route on Ament, and turn left to continue on Manser Road, through Linwood. At William Hastings Line, turn left toward Crosshill. There, keep an eye open on the right for The Twig People. Take time to browse among the surprising twig and wrought iron creations. Continue through Crosshill, turning right to travel straight south on Road 5 (Hutchison Road), and have your navigator on the lookout for the family-owned Shantz Country Treasures, on the right. SCT is a 10,000 square foot showroom filled with hand-crafted Mennonite furniture and solid wood mouldings. Visit, enjoy – and purchase some of this area’s excellent wood products. The Shantzes are especially enthused about their collection of Mission style furniture! (Don't hesitate to ask for a tour and some history behind this old cheese factory.) Continue south on Road 5 for about one quarter mile, and then turn left into Wellesley. Turn left (north) on Nafziger Road to visit Wellesley Apple Products, producers of the best apple butter and the purest sweet cider. Wellesley is also home to one of the best-tasting annual events in Ontario – the Wellesley Apple Butter and Cheese Festival, the last Saturday in September (this year September 25). This sweet celebration turns the village of Wellesley into a carnival, a festival and a farm market, all in one – and thousands of visitors return every year to enjoy this bigtime, small-town event. (You can continue south out of Wellesley, on Nafziger Road, and turn left in Philipsburg, continuing east to St. Agatha, where you could follow, in reverse, the Stratford Route.) l VISITOR GUIDE l Summer 2004 l July 6, 13, 20 & 27, Kitchener TOONEY TUESDAYS Downtown Kitchener, free celebration for children. When it’s travel on your own time, the most important reason to go is: pleasure. There’s nothing more important than relaxing the soul. Your objective is to get away from all of life’s worries; but to reach that objective may take a bit of planning. One has to look, read and discover. But even that search sounds enticing, doesn’t it? To begin a quest to arrive at the “Power of Three” – those “three Rs of travel,” the destinations and activities that “refresh, re-energize and rejuvenate.” Nothing else really matters. And so, to assist you in your search for the Power of Three, we give you Visitor – it’s for your pleasure. What you’ll find in Visitor is a whole cornucopia of experiences, unique in every way. This summer especially, the communities of Visitor Country offer a splendor of activities, from downtown buskers to highland festivities, from relaxing on the Grand River or boating on our inland lakes to picnicking with swans while the air is filled with the baroque of Bach or the buffoonery of the Beirdo Brothers. We offer something for everyone. It’s a pretty big claim; we wouldn’t make it if it were not true. But it is – oh, so true. Visitor Country offers perhaps the best mix of urban pleasure and rural delights, anywhere in Canada. The contiguous communities featured in this magazine range from busy, sophisticated cities like Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, 62 62 T H E P O W E R O F T H R E E Cambridge, Brantford and Brampton, to cultural havens such as Stratford, Fergus and Elora, to intriguing towns like Tillsonburg, St. Jacobs, Elmira, Acton and St. Marys, to friendly villages such as Shakespeare, and the rural delights of our Backroad Adventures. Our hotels and motels offer excellent accommodations, designed for the traveler or distinguished guest. Prices are as attractive as the establishments. Spread across Visitor Country are hotels and motels, bed and breakfasts and convention facilities, all designed to provide you a great home away from home, only moments away from the nearby Visitor Country events and attractions. Visitor Country offers rural charm that is none the less refined, multicultural, and very cosmopolitan. Touring our back roads will introduce you to excellent pubs, sophisticated shops, and cultural surprises. Actually, the same can be said for our urban centres, as well. Wherever you travel in Visitor Country, the staff in our shops, restaurants and attractions will make you feel welcomed and worry free. Whether you’re from a neighboring city or another country, we have plenty to keep you busy for a entire week or more. If you’re seeking something for the kids, or – probably more importantly – something for your sanity, in Visitor Country you’ll find the Power of Three, an unparalleled opportunity to be refreshed, re-energized and rejuvenated. Your quest for pleasure will be accomplished.
