The Puy de Dôme is the jewel of the range, peaking at 1,465 metres high. Visitors can reach the site on foot or by the rack railway, the Panoramique des Dômes. Its highly uniform construction has undergone very few modifications through the ages as its large dimensions have precluded extensions. But the interior décor has disappeared, along with its embellishments. Notre Dame has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1840. Don’t miss the statue of the Vierge en Majesté in the church chancel. All that is left is the the cone of the Sandoire rock and the chimney of the Tulière rock. The Sanadoire stands at 1290m and until the 15th century was home to a castle. LAC DE GUERY At an altitude of 1,268 metres, Lac de Guéry is Auvergne’s highest lake. This listed site is very popular for fishing, and perfect for an easy mountain hike. Leave the D996 in the direction of the Esquiladou camping and the cemetery. Continue straight ahead. Today, the lake has two beaches open for swimming in addition to offering water sports and fishing.
