Your Knightly Quest
King Arthur Webquest
Before we start reading the novel, you must learn a bit about Freak's obsession with King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. To understand the novel better, and why Freak is so fascinated by them, you need some background knowledge. You will research and create a wiki that can be used to teach others about this legend.
Groups of 3 are required. All topics must include pictures.
Investigator research the mysteries surrounding King Arthur and Gwenevier
Adventurer research the stories of the great Knights of the Round Table
Traveler research the Holy Grail can you find it?
Your minor assignment will be creating an informational wiki about King Arthur.
You will be marked individually on the 6 Traits for your section of the wiki and as a group for the overall presentation and how well you worked together
.
Your project must also include a statement about our first Essential Question at the beginning of your wiki: Why are myths and legends important to us and our culture?

Student Information:
This unit is meant to be done completely on your own. You will have the choice to read the book silently by yourself, or listening to it on the iPod Touches with a partner/small group. You can read at your own speed and complete the work as you go.
A few rules before you start:
1. We will complete a King Arthur Mini Unit together first
2. After each chapter check your booklet to see if there are questions/activities to complete if so, you must stop and finish them before you continue reading hand them into the hand in bucket before you continue reading
3. Moodle Discussion Questions must be completed for the appropriate chapters before you continue reading 4. Most of the novel questions and all of the moodle questions are formative, which means they will not be marked on the report card They will say Assessment 4321 on the page
This means you will be assessed on the quality of your work so you are still expected to do your best:
4 work is excellent at grade level, shows in depth understanding
3 work is proficient at grade level, shows solid understanding
2 work is at grade level, shows basic understanding
1 work is not yet at grade level, shows additional instruction is needed
5. Some of the novel questions/activities are for marks and they are labeled (/mark) please complete these assignments on loose leaf and submit to the hand in bucket before you continue reading
6. You will read and complete the work at your own pace, but there will be a specific deadline in which you must have the novel and questions done so we can do our final projects there may be other midway deadlines for activities as well
7. You should work on your Quest for Music project as you read through the novel it would be a good idea to create a list of possible songs after reading each chapter song examples have a space for writing song ideas
8. If you finish the novel and questions before the deadline then you can start on your Quest for Music and Quest for Truth assignments if those are complete then a challenge assignment is available or you may study your vocab, or read for you AR goal

goal: To become Dean at Baker Academy.
role: You are a Professor, in a specific field, at Baker Academy and you are trying to convince your colleagues that you are the best candidate to be the next Dean of the University.
audıence: A very opinionated, highly educated, professor who reads books constantly.
sıtuatıon: You are applying to become the Dean (president) of Baker Academy. You must argue your opinion on one of the following topics, strongly defending your topic with evidence, and of course, highly educated word choice.
The topics deal with mythology, literature, medicine and law. You choose which field you want to explore and write about.
1.
man or myth? – This is a persuasive opinion essay that requires some research – did King Arthur exist or is he purely myth? What parts of the myth are taken from fact, if any, or is it all a fantasy? What is your opinion? Express your opinion and defend yourself using appropriate research, evidence, quotes and sources cited.
2. why do we have to learn about thıs? – Answer one of our essential questions in this opinion essay. Why are myths and legends important to us and our culture? Use research and facts to support your arguments, focusing specifically on the legend/myth of King Arthur and how relates to our lives today.
what’s wıth freak’s obsessıon? – You must explain why Freak (aka Kevin) is so fascinated by King 3.
Arthur and the Knight of the Round Table. What are his reasons for wanting to act like a knight? Why did “Freak the Mighty” end up working for both Kevin and Max? Use quotes and situations from the novel Freak the Mighty to support your arguments.
how do people overcome dısabılıtıes? - There are two ways to do this essay. A) You can focus 4.
strictly on the novel and explain how Max and Freak overcome their disabilities and challenges to lead fun and successful lives. Use quotes from the novel to support your arguments. B) You can choose any disorder, disease or disability that humans suffer (medical, physical, emotional, or mental), and explain what it is, how it is treated, and how a person can live with it and have a good life as well.
why do murderers go free? - In this opinion essay, you will discuss what you think about the 5.
American Justice system, and explain how people who commit murder are able to receive parole. You must explain, using Kenny Kane as an example, and other real life cases, if you think this is really justice. What do you think should change? You must solve this problem. All the essays must include a proper bibliography of works used. Please see me if you need another bibliography sheet (even though you should still have the one from the debate unit at the beginning of the year!)
The essay should be the standard 5 paragraphs, and must express an opinion and defend it strongly. Anywhere from 1‐4 pages is adequate. (1 full page at least, – if less than that, seek my help with extending your ideas). 2‐3 pages would be ideal.
You will be graded using the standard essay rubric.

On a Quest for Music Example #1 Listen after reading ch. 1
The novel Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick lends itself beautifully to a filmmaking experience. It is a story of struggle and success, goodness and evil. In keeping with the plot line and the theme of the text, the following musical selections are recommended as excellent choices to accompany the video footage of the film. Many selections are given, with reference given to the placement of each and justification for the choice.
The first song is suggested as the opening number for the film. In the first chapter of the novel, "The Unvanquished Truth", the speaker, Max, talks honestly about himself, revealing his character flaws. The song "Fooling Yourself" by Styx mirrors Max's view of the world. The long instrumental introduction is well suited to establishing the drama of the story.
Fooling Yourself
Written by Tommy Shaw
Lead vocals by Tommy Shaw
Make a List of Song Ideas for the Beginning or for Kevin and Max:
You see the world through your cynical eyes
You’re a troubled young man I can tell
You’ve got it all in the palm of your hand
But your hand’s wet with sweat and your head needs a rest
And you’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it
You’re kidding yourself if you don’t believe it
How can you be such an angry young man
When your future looks quite bright to me
How can there be such a sinister plan
That could hide such a lamb, such a caring young man
Find the song and listen.
You’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it
You’re kidding yourself if you don’t believe it
Get up, get back on your feet
You’re the one they can’t beat and you know it
Come on, let’s see what you’ve got
Just take your best shot and don’t blow it
You’re fooling yourself if you don’t believe it
You’re killing yourself if you don’t believe it
Get up, get back on your feet
You’re the one they can’t beat and you know it
Come on, let’s see what you’ve got
Just take your best shot and don’t blow it

Irony a contrast between reality and appearance, or between what is expected and what happens.
Max makes the comment, "Me rescuing Freak. What a joke, right?" Do you think he feels that to be an ironic assessment of the situation? Why or why not? Write an explanation of the situation in the novel and give your assessment on why this is an example of irony.

Stand
Rascal Flatts
You feel like a candle in a hurricane
Just like a picture with a broken frame
Alone and helpless
Like you've lost your fight
But you'll be alright, you'll be alright
[Chorus:]
Cause when push comes to shove
You taste what you're made of
You might bend, till you break
Cause its all you can take
On your knees you look up
Decide you've had enough
You get mad you get strong
Wipe your hands shake it off
Then you Stand, Then you stand
Chapter 6 Close Encounters of the Turd Kind
I chose this song for the part when Freak can't see the fireworks so Max lifts him up onto his shoulders. When it says "You feel like a candle in a hurricane...", that is like Freak. When it says "When you stand..." it's like Max. The music has a great beat and it really fits when the two are watching the fireworks. The words have a good significance to this part. Make a List of Song Ideas for Chapter 6 and/or 7:
Find the song and listen.
Life's like a novel
With the end ripped out
The edge of a canyon
With only one way down
Take what you're given before its gone
Start holding on, keep holding on
[Repeat Chorus]
Everytime you get up
And get back in the race
One more small piece of you
Starts to fall into place
Oh
[Repeat Chorus]

The next song up is "Knights of Cydonia", by Muse. The song is generally about taking adventures, and the music video implies an imaginary adventure. This goes very well with when Max and Kevin become Freak the Mighty. They start going on make believe adventures, and become nearly honorary knights. The strong, almost hypnotizing lyrics have a very powerful effect on the listener, and the changes of vocals seems to make the main characters of the lyrics very powerful sounding. Just like Freak the Mighty.

Activity Ch. 12
Writers can tell their stories from many points of view. Sometimes a central character in the story tells what is happening, sometimes the storyteller is a minor character, or a narrator who sees everything. Sometimes the writer switches point of view from one character to another.
Who tells most of the story in Freak the Mighty? Rewrite an interesting part of the story that you've read so far from a different character's point of view. (12 paragraphs). Please write this on loose leaf and hand in to bucket.

Song 6
 listen after finishing novel
The final selection is intended for play at the end of the film. It is Pearl Jam's "Man of the Hour", a farewell song to a dying man. Although Kevin is not an old man at the time of his death, the lyrics speak eloquently of a fond farewell to one who has made a difference in the lives of others. This is especially true for young Max in this novel. Because of Kevin, his life will be richer and greater for many years to come. The riveting vocal and instrumental tracks of the song will haunt the viewer and maybe even evoke a tear or two.

Make a List of Song Ideas that show Friendship:
Tidal waves don’t beg forgiveness
'CRASHED' and on their way
Father he enjoyed collisions; others walked away
A snowflake falls in may.
And the doors are open now as the bells are ringing out
Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow
Goodbye for now.
Find the song and listen.
Nature has its own religion; gospel from the land
Father ruled by long division, young men they pretend
Old men comprehend.
And the 'SKY BREAKS' at dawn; shedding light upon this town
They’ll all come ‘round
Cause the man of the hour is taking his final bow
Goodbye for now.
And the road
The old man paved
The broken seams along the way
The rusted signs, left just for me
He was guiding me, love, his own way
Now the man of the hour is taking his final bow
As the curtain comes down
I feel that this is just goodbye for now.

The six selections cited in this quest for music have been carefully chosen for both their lyrics and melodies. They are meant to not only reveal, but illuminate the events and feelings of the story. It is intended that they whisk the viewer away to the time and place of the film, and make her feel like she is there. They will take the viewer on the quest.

Song 7
 listen after finishing novel
Chapter 23 is titled "The Empty Book", and at this point in time the reader is aware that Kevin has been living a fantasy, but sparing Max the pain of his imminent death. Kevin's gift to Max is an empty book, ironic in the fact that all along Max has been honest with the reader about of reading and writing skills. In gifting Max so, it is Kevin's hope that their story will be told, and that because of that Max's life will be richer. Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten" speaks the same thoughts and also offers hope through the upbeat tempo and repetitious rythyms. This is the fifth selection of this compilation.
