At times, the role of military spouse can be a struggle, but being resourceful can help spouses thrive. There are family support programs through the Airman & Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) that offer guidance and tools to help spouses adjust to the military lifestyle. The A&FRC hosts Heartlink quarterly, a military spouse orientation for those new to a military lifestyle. These workshops offer training to military spouses of all branches who have been married five years or less (spouses of five to ten years are welcome to attend and have reported learning new things). Heartlink will cover military culture, traditions, and customs that spouses are likely to encounter. It also discusses the role of military spouse and their support to the mission. At Heartlink, spouses will get introduced to local resources that are there to help with all aspects of military life including raising resilient children, earning a college degree, scholarship opportunities, base resources for couples, health coaching, counseling, coping with deployments, emergency financial assistance, and so much more. Possibly the most important aspect of Heartlink is the opportunity to meet seasoned spouses who have walked this path with success and other new spouses in the community. It is not uncommon for spouses to forge friendships that last well beyond that first duty station. The next Heartlink workshop is on Oct. 14; please contact the A&FRC to sign up for free. Military spouses are encouraged to use the A&FRC as a hub of information. Become a resourceful spouse by checking into the A&FRC shortly after arrival at each new duty station and attend the Tinker Family Orientation. Check the classes and events that are offered at the A&FRC. Job-seeking spouses can use the A&FRC to connect with local job search resources and update their resume through classes and one-on-one resume reviews. Successful spouses are often seen at the deployment briefs with their military member and use the deployment resources available. The A&FRC offers financial classes to help build a family spending plan, savings, and investing. Become a thriving military spouse by using the A&FRC for resources and referrals to help you throughout your member’s career. Successful military spouses also look to other more experienced spouses in their squadron for additional advice and support. Seek out your squadron’s key spouse at each new duty station. The Air Force Key Spouse program is designed to offer peer-to-peer support during deployments and beyond. The program belongs to each squadron’s commander who determines the tempo and direction of the program. Key spouses are selected by commanders through an interview process and are appointed in writing. Those selected attend initial training and continuing education courses offered through the A&FRC to become well trained volunteers ready to assist. Squadron key spouses are an invaluable resource who will contact spouses during deployments as well as send updates on squadron and community events. If you are unsure who your squadron’s key spouse is, please contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center to get connected with this individual. For more information on the Heartlink Military Spouse Orientation, Key Spouse Program, or for general information and referral, get in touch with the Airman & Family Readiness Center at 405-739-2747. Keep an eye out for new and exciting programs to help both military members and their families succeed in their personal and professional life. Airman & Family Readiness Center Spouses welcomed to Tinker by community agencies at the Aug. 5 Heartlink Information Fair. 6 | www.tinkerliving.com 6001 Arnold St. 405-739-2747 Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. No Federal Endorsement of Any Sponsor(s) Intended TINKER LIVING September 2015 No Federal Endorsement of Any Sponsor(s) Intended www.tinkerliving.com | 7 INFORMATION, TICKETS & TRAVEL ITT is a full service travel agency that specializes in vacation travel. ARTS & CRAFTS CENTER Arts and Crafts Spotlight Mary Stone has been making baskets for 23 years. It all began in memory of her paternal grandmother who passed when Mary’s father was just age one. “I wanted to learn to honor my grandmother,” Mary said, “I never thought this would expand into a business.” Mary met Mavis Doering, a fellow member of the Cherokee Nation, who became her mentor. There are two beautiful variations that Mary specializes in. The Cherokee Western Oklahoma basket is made in the round with honeysuckle or reed and it is double-walled which makes it very sturdy. The Eastern Cherokee basket is made with flat reeds or river cane, not in the round. This method was popular before the removal of 1838, but declined as the materials were not common in the Oklahoma Cherokee areas. Both variations are very challenging and can take 8 – 10 hours to complete. Mary recently retired from Program Management after working 31 years on Tinker, and is now offering her classes a number of ways. Two all-day classes are available each month; the Western Cherokee basket class is on Sept. 12 and the Eastern Cherokee basket class is on Sept. 19. Or, students can choose their variation for a two-day session that can be set up with Mary; 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 2 – 6 p.m., Tuesday – Friday. When you sign up for a class with Mary you not only learn a new craft, you also get a history lesson! Arts & Crafts is open Tuesday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. and located in Bldg. 478.
