Come, let us sing for joy to the LoRD; Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and extol Him with music and song." Eddy Atley George, affectionately known as "Porgie.., was born on 2"d June, 1960 to Leoneal "Cook" George and Harold "Pan Handle" Rabsatt. Eddy began his primary education at the Long Look School, which was located in the Long Look Methodist Church Hall, and was later transferred to the East End Primary School (now Willard Wheatley Primary School). He later migrated to St. Thomas in the USVI to fmish his secondary education where he lived with his aunt and his cousin, Andy "Sham Lie". Eddy's first job was at the Frenchman's Reef Hotel in St. Thomas. When he returned home from St. Thomas, he was employed at West lndies Yacht and then at Marina Cay. Over the years, unknowingly, he was mastering skills in the hospitality industry. Subsequently. he ventured into the taxiing business with his uncle Antwin George. He devoted more than half of his life to taxiing. Eddy had a passion for music. He bought a guitar and was literally self-taught. In ~e early stages you could fihd him at home in the evenings just sitting and learning to play his guitar. When he mastered the guitar he started an entertainment band known as "The 3 Amigos". This band was Eddy' s pride. They could be heard weekly entertaining tourists and locals alike, at Conch Shell Point Restaurant and other places. They went to • Jost Van Dyke almost every Saturday night to play. For many years, Eddy performed as a local calypsonian and competed in the annual August Festival calypso shows as "Mighty Porgie". He was not only talented with musical gifts but was humorous and a great stand-up comedian especially acting as a ventriloquist with his puppet shows. It was during his time in St. Thomas with his cousin Andy, that Eddy's passion for football was birthed. He played in a team back then, and we saw his passion, knowledge and understanding of the game blossomed to the point where, in later years, he literally became the person with whom many of his football friends consulted before betting on the Super Bowl or any NFL game. His siblings did not stand a chance with the television when football or, as a matter of fact, any other sport was on. Eddy loved sports, and could watch and talk about it all day, whether football, baseball or basketball. His siblings recall the very early years in primary school when they could not wait to get home from school to watch the baseball world-series from back in the days of the Yankees and the Dodgers. Tension was always high in the house back then, as Eddy was a Yankees' fan and some of the others were Dodgers. For many years, Eddy's favorite football team was the Washington Red Skins. He was privileged to go to one of their games after he was blessed to meet one of the team's owners through his taxiing business. Surprisingly, Eddy later switched his favorite team to the Jacksonville Jaguars after he learnt that one of their players was his name sake. He also liked the Patriots, as he considered it a very good team and admired several of its players. 5 Recently, Eddy developed a social gathering net group with the ''boys" at Fort Hill. They would meet regularly on Sunday evenings to play games and watch sports. Anyone who knew Eddy "Porgie" would agree that he was polite, dependable, humorous, a quiet person with a big heart and full of compassion. He had a heart to serve. He was a man of few words (except when talking sports with his friends, of course), but full of wisdom and understanding. When Eddy spoke, you listened. Over the years, Eddy faced personal challenges with his health but carried his burdens very much by himself. He persevered despite the pain and discomfort. On 16th May, 2015, Eddy's fight was over and the hurting came to an end. We want to remember Eddy "Porgie" today as a life lived. Not in grief that he is no more, but in thankfulness that he was. So, let us remember him today in thankfulness for his love, his kindness, his compassion, his commitment and dedication to family and friends, and for his life of service. "His song has ended, but his melody lingers on". lrving Berlin May His Soul Rest in Peace! 6
