Atlantic Woodworker's Association AWA Newsletter January 2012 7129 Morningside Dr., Halifax. Nova Scotia, B3L 2E5 Volume 30 Issue 01 Next awa meeting JANUARY 10 TH 2012, AT 7 PM Our first meeting of 2012 will take place on the 10th January at 7 pm. We will meet at our regular meeting place, Kent in Dartmouth. This meeting will be a show and tell of any new tools you received for Christmas. Also if you are working on any project you are working on or maype have a item you would like to share. The Christmas Event, 2011 Our Christmas social meeting at Lee Valley was with-out a doubt, a pleasant and meaningful event. We are very greatful and thankful to Lee valley for providing a room, and hosting this event. Many thanks should also go out to all our members who brought so many mouthwatering goodies to eat.. This event was, a time to bring toys that our Receiving, Ross and Brenda of the Salvation Army members had made. It is inspiring to see the number of toys that always arrive for distribution to needy children. Those members who had made toys, were given a chance to show them and give a little description of its construction and finish used. The hat was passed for those who were unable to bring a toy, an oportunity to share. We receved a generous $75.00. Ross and Brenda of the Salvation Army were guests at this meeting and were very appreciative to receive both the cash and toys to help fill their Christmas boxes. They also enjoyed being at the meeting and hearing how the toys were made, and meeting those who made them. We know from seeing these wonderful toys that there will be some very happy children Christmas morning. A demo of a new compact, complete shop unit just in, was presented by Kevin of Lee Valley. I wonder if any of our members got a unit for Christmas. ---Stan Salsman Some weeks ago I was helping at the Salvation Army Food Bank. A woman walked by with a small child holding a wooden car. I thought I recognized the style and asked her if I could see it. Underneath was written “ART SNOW 2004”. She informed me that she received it in 2004 as part of our Christmas Toy program and since then it had been passed down to her youngest 2 year old. Two older children had previously owned and played with it. She expressed pleasure at receiving our toys and told me how the children had enjSoyed them. This brought home to me several points—1--we do good work for a good cause —2--our work is enduring—3--our work is appreciated—4—Art Snow made great cars, --5—we probably should put our names on our toys. Gene Nurse Atlantic Woodworker's From the Library This large list of great, new books and videos have been donated by our book benefactor, our library lavisher, our reading renderer, our, well, our good friend and AWA member, Graham McCulloch. Graham has been more than generous over the years with donations of books and videos. As always, the next time you see him give him a big thanks for his support! Now, just because we do get a lot of the latest releases from Graham it doesn't mean that we can't add other books and videos to the library too. We do have a small budget for this. So, if you have a suggestion please let me know what it is and we can look into it. Finally, this coming meeting will make it four months since our last meeting at Kent's. This means that ALL books and videos that have been borrowed need to be returned.
