Preserving our Stained Glass Windows
Our beautiful stained glass windows need your help.
Originally designed in 1956 by Joseph Tierney of the Church Craft Stained
Glass Co., New York, for the new American Martyrs Catholic Church,
our windows have graced countless sacraments and celebrations.
Now, some of them are bowing, bulging and cracking as a result of
age, proximity to the ocean, and a prior attempt to protect them with a
plexiglass covering. Careful examination reveals that three of the larger
windows need immediate attention.
The "North American Martyrs Window” which depicts the eight
patron saints of our church (photo to left), is the most critical. Facing
south, it is exposed to the sun and heat and has extensive weather
damage, including bulging, bowing and rusting of the cames (the
lead and tin material that holds the individual stained glass together.)
The entire window will be removed and repaired.
The "St. Jude Apostle Window”
facing north, depicts the Patron
Saint of Lost Causes. This window
has several large bulges in the
upper panels which have caused
the glass to crack; light can be
seen at St. Jude’s wrist and the
support bars are separating from
their casings. The upper quarter
of the St. Jude pane will be removed and repaired.
“The past gave them to us
as their gift,
it is our obligation
to preserve them into the future.”
Monsignor John F. Barry
The “Christ the King Window” facing north (photo to right), holds a special position at the entrance
to the Church. It has less extensive damage, but several lower
panels are damaged and will be repaired.
You may notice that some of the smaller windows are also
showing signs of age. While work on these can wait, they too
will eventually need to be restored (as part of this project, we
plan to repair only the “Saint Augustine Window “ on the
south side of the church which has a few small holes in the
upper panels.)
The restoration committee carefully researched stained glass
craftsmen and selected The Judson Studios for our project.
Located near South Pasadena, Judson has more than 116 years
of experience and is one of the world's foremost providers
of hand crafted stained glass. Work has already begun to
remove the panels and transport them to Judson’s workshop.
The estimated cost of this restoration project is $63,000. Your
contribution to support this Stained Glass Resoration would
be greatly appreciated. To donate, make checks payable to
American Martyrs Church and note in in the memo section
“Stained Glass Window Restoration.”
You can also log in to your Faith Direct account, or sign up
with our church code 308, and select “Stained Glass Window
Restoration” to donate electronically.

Ste w ardsh ip Reflections
Next week our Gospel readings move from Luke
Chapter 13 to Luke Chapter 14. The final words we
hear in the Gospel for August are: “For behold some
are last who will be first, and some are first who
will be last.” Next week, Chapter 14 picks up on the
same theme with the parable of guests positioning
themselves at a dinner table.
Our society loves lists. They usually start with
something like: The 10 Richest, The 20 Most Influential,
or a similar phrase. The message of today's Gospel is
'You may be in the top 10 on earth, but unless you are
in the top 10 (or 1,000,000) in service to others, it does
not matter.'
There are strong stewardship messages in this
Gospel. Throughout Jesus' ministry, He stresses the
need for conversion. He calls for us to change, and
that's exactly what's involved in living a stewardship
way of life. We must experience a conversion of mind
and heart to be a true disciple of Jesus and a genuine
steward. The next stewardship point is directly related
to an understanding of “For behold some are last who
will be first, and some are first who will be last.” Jesus
is asking us to do service to others using the gifts we
have. And take note of the word "some". It means that
even if we have much and we share much we may still
be in the top 10.
"Much will be required of the person entrusted
with much . . " Luke 12:48

Respect Life Ministry
GOVERNMENT INTRUSION
…”We are told that the government has no place in the
very private and personal decision of abortion. It is true
that we don’t want the state prying into our personal affairs,
and that sex, pregnancy and abortion are highly personal
issues. Nonetheless, domestic violence, sexual abuse, rape,
incest and murder are also highly personal, and we all
agree that the government must be involved in these to
protect the innocent. The real concern is not whether the
issue is personal, but whether the government will fulfill its
responsibility to protect the right to life of the mother and
her unborn child. Without that fundamental right, all other
rights lose their meaning. Thomas Jefferson wrote: ‘The care
of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is
the first and only object of good government.’ “

When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began
more than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly
in a state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a
place that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go to
be renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace.
We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Be prepared for an emergency
No matter how well you childproof your home or try to
prevent accidents, one of the best things you can do is
prepare yourself for an emergency. To help keep your kids
safe, it's smart to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
and the abdominal thrust procedure (Heimlich maneuver). It’s
helpful to assemble a first aid kit with emergency instructions
and to keep important numbers near your phone such as
poison control office, your pediatrician, your work, and a
neighbor or nearby relative; and as soon as your child is old
enough to know his/her own name and address, teach him
or her to dial 9-1-1 to call for help in case of an emergency.
