March 2016 Newsletter - Hollywood Arts Council
3/22/2016 March 2016 Newsletter - Hollywood Arts Council The heARTbeat of Hollywood March 2016 In this issue: 30th Charlie Awards, Hollywood Chamber Orchestra, and Coming Up in Hollywood This spring marks the 30th anniversary of the Hollywood Arts Council's annual Charlie Awards, celebrating the arts and culture of Hollywood. Anniversaries are appropriate times for reflection, and opportunities to consider some of the past accomplishments of our grass‐roots volunteer organization. Milestones are also convenient times to assess the present and perhaps most importantly, to create a roadmap for the future. For almost 40 years, the nonprofit Hollywood Arts Council has been creating exhibits and festivals, holding arts fairs and hosting community roundtables. We are funded by a small number of grants but mostly donations and membership, so we are firmly planted in the community. Without the support of the residents and visitors along with the businesses and neighborhood organizations of Hollywood, we could not do the work we do. From painting the pull down doors on Hollywood Boulevard with stars from the Golden Age, to hanging artistic banners and preserving murals across the city, we have participated in the revitalization of the area. By commissioning mosaic pathways in the Hollywood & Highland project and presenting free live concerts in the same venue, promoting photography and music through shows and events, hosting poetry slams and curating pop‐up galleries, the Hollywood Arts Council has consistently reinforced the idea that art projects are an important part of the region and the economy. And of course, by engaging teaching artists to construct free arts workshops to elementary school children, kids who otherwise lack exposure to a multitude of cultural activities, the Hollywood Arts Council is investing in the future. So what do the next 30‐40 years hold? As Hollywood expands around us with cranes and new developments on seemingly every corner, we are working with developers and local leaders to push for an arts component in any new project. We are enhancing our position as a coordinating body for the arts, advising businesses and organizations on how arts can enhance their projects while serving the public. We continue to connect artists with programs to beautify our city, bringing art to exciting new venues, partnering with established and emerging clubs, restaurants and retail establishments, and introducing members to these businesses and in turn providing a new customer base. The kids are learning about color mixing and creating their own color wheels. They have been painting to music (mostly jazz) using sound, color mixing, and abstract expressionistic stroke techniques. From that, they are creating stringed instruments from recycled materials to select music using the same painting techniques, and will eventually make music using the instruments they've created.
