2009 Annual Report Fiscal Year 2009 at the Amon Carter Museum 2009 Annual Report 1 Mission Statement The Amon Carter Museum was established through the generosity of Amon G. Carter Sr. (1879–1955) to house his collection of paintings and sculpture by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell; to collect, preserve, and exhibit the finest examples of American art; and to serve an educational role through exhibitions, publications, and programs devoted to the study of American art. It hardly seems possible that it was almost half a century ago that my brother, Amon Carter Jr., and I had the pleasure of fulfilling our father’s wishes by establishing the museum. So much has happened since then. The collection has continued to expand, and, with it, the museum and its programs have blossomed. This past year was no exception. Despite the difficult economy—we have had to trim our activities like most other nonprofit organizations— the museum enjoyed a wonderful year of acquisitions, exhibitions, and public and educational programs. Such achievements are due in no small part to the dedication of our talented staff and the support of many corporations, foundations, and individuals in our community. Many of you are members of the Council, the Print Guild, and the Stieglitz Circle, all of which assist the museum in adding great works of art to its collection. Others serve on our Visiting Committee, and the Board of Trustees and I are grateful for your encouragement and counsel. In difficult economic times, we know that many people turn to cultural activities, and especially art museums, for emotional and spiritual sustenance as well as connoisseurship. We are pleased that we are able to continue to make the Carter and its programs available to our community free of charge. Letter from the Director By almost every measure, 2009 was a good year for the Amon Carter Museum. Despite the economic downturn and its continued adverse affect on giving to nonprofits, more individuals contributed to the museum last year than the year before. We are especially grateful, for these funds support our education and public programs. The heart of any museum is its collection, and we were fortunate to make stellar additions to ours in 2009. We have long been looking to acquire Edward S. Curtis’ The North American Indian (1907-30, 20 volumes), one of the most complete records of American Indian life ever made. With the assistance of an anonymous donor, we added a pristine set to our collection last year. We were able as well to acquire William Trost Richards’ painting Woodland Glade (1860, front cover), a key addition to our nineteenth-century holdings, and we greatly enhanced our twentieth-century collection with Soap Bubble Set (Lunar-Space Object) (ca. 1950) by Joseph Cornell and Conversation—Sky and Earth (1940, p. 6) by Charles Sheeler. The museum also received a large donation of art from Ruth Carter Stevenson, including works by Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hofmann, and George Rickey. We began our exhibition year with a fresh look at one of the first artists to travel deep into the West, Alfred Jacob Miller. The exhibition then traveled to the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. Our second special exhibition was Barbara Crane: Challenging Vision, a retrospective of the artist's work, which also appeared at the Chicago Cultural Center. We finished with the Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African-American Art: Works on Paper, which the San Antonio collectors generously loaned to both the Carter and the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio. As you know, the museum receives a generous grant each year from the Amon G. Carter Foundation that covers the basic costs of operation, but funding for our outreach, educational, and public programs must be raised each year, and we appreciate your continued support. The museum is open to all free of charge. There is no substitute for seeing great American art firsthand, so plan to visit often as we move forward into our fiftieth year of operation in 2011. Ron Tyler Director 2009 Annual Report 3 Acquisitions From exhibitions and educational activities to publications and research, the Amon Carter Museum’s collection is fundamental to continuing and expanding the museum’s mission. Over the last year, the Carter acquired a number of works that together represent each of its principle collecting areas—paintings, sculpture, works on paper, and photographs. The Carter could not continue to build its holdings without the dedicated support of its members, donors, and friends. The museum’s special membership groups—the Council, the Paper Guild, and the Stieglitz Circle—dedicated their annual dues to acquiring new works for the collection. The Carter extends its gratitude for such generous support not only during 2009—a particularly volatile economic twelve months— but throughout the years. a more intimate, informed, and intellectually rewarding level, and they combine their passions for art and culture with enduring service to the Amon Carter Museum and their community. In 2009, the annual financial support from Council members made possible the purchase of the painting Woodland Glade (1860, front cover) by William Trost Richards. The marvelous landscape was unveiled during the Council’s year-end, black-tie dinner in the museum’s main gallery. The Council This special membership society was created in 1988 to honor Amon G. Carter’s vision as a collector and to provide support for the museum’s painting and sculpture acquisitions program. Council members come to know the museum on 4 2009 Annual Report The Paper Guild Now in its fifth year, the Paper Guild was established to help the Carter acquire important nineteenth- and twentieth-century American works on paper. With the goal of increasing their knowledge about collecting, connoisseurship, and the history of American printmaking, the Paper Guild traveled in 2009 to the Tamarind Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they also visited several printmakers’ studios; attended the Dallas Art Fair; journeyed to New York City for the International Fine Print Dealers Association Print Fair; and toured the private collections of several area print collectors. They also visited the Fort Worth studio of master printmaker David Conn, a former instructor at Texas Christian University. Since its inception, the Paper Guild has made possible the acquisition of five works on paper. The group is responsible for the acquisition of two works in 2009, including Scaffolding (1915, p. 9), a woodcut by Mildred McMillen. It is the first work by that artist to enter the collection. The Stieglitz Circle Established in 2004, the Stieglitz Circle brings together people who are interested in the art of photography and in supporting the museum’s photography acquisitions. Through an annual program of events, Stieglitz Circle members engage with artists, scholars, and art dealers. In addition to their annual print review to select new acquisitions for the collection, in 2009 Circle members enjoyed private dinners with photographers Barbara Crane and Laura McPhee, as well as with video artist Mary Lucier; traveled to Santa Monica for Photo LA, the West Coast photography fair; took a private tour of the Rachofsky House collection in Dallas; and convened in New York City for the annual photography show sponsored by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers. To date, the Stieglitz Circle is responsible for the acquisition of more than two dozen photographs; in 2009, these acquisitions included works by Paul Fusco, Kenneth Josephson, and Joel Sternfeld. London: Iris Editions Ltd., 2009. 2009 Annual Report 9 Exhibitions The Amon Carter Museum curatorial staff organized nine exhibitions in 2009 and hosted three special exhibitions organized by other institutions. The painting and sculpture collection was also rehung in 2009 to integrate works by Frederic Remington into the broader spectrum of the museum’s collection of American art. Thanks to the Jane and John Justin Foundation, the museum opened its new Remington and Russell Study Galleries in 2009. The mezzanine-level spaces were redesigned to make more works of art accessible to visitors. The galleries now include a reading room, a didactic video that helps visitors understand the complex lost-wax method of casting bronze, and recessed art cabinets with deep retractable drawers that house works on paper for study. The museum loaned twenty-six works from its collection to the following sister institutions across North America: Des Moines Art Center; Gilcrease Museum, Tulsa, Okla.; Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebr.; Musée des beaux-arts de Montréal; Museum of Modern Art, New York, N.Y.; Oklahoma City Museum of Art; Portland Museum of Art, Portland, Maine.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, N.Y. Support from the museum’s members makes it possible for the Carter to offer free admission to all of its exhibitions. Special Exhibitions Mary Lucier: The Plains of Sweet Regret November 15, 2008–February 15, 2009 This video installation explored the rapid depopulation of the northern plains, a hauntingly beautiful world of landscape and loss brought into view through music and video. Laced with both melancholy and loveliness, this work by artist Mary Lucier examined the seismic changes that have swept away family farms, ranches, small towns, and rural schools. Mary Lucier: The Plains of Sweet Regret was commissioned by the North Dakota Museum of Art with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Production was funded by Creative Capital and the Rockefeller Foundation. Curated by Laurel Reuter, director, North Dakota Museum of Art. Barbara Crane: Challenging Vision February 14–May 10, 2009 Visitors were invited to think of photography as a vibrant language that extends well beyond realism, where high contrast, overlapping exposures, and limited focus are just as important as acute detail. This is the work of Barbara Crane, whose retrospective exhibition of nearly 200 photographs was on view at the Carter. Barbara Crane: Challenging Vision was organized by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and guest curated by Kenneth C. Burkhart. 10 2009 Annual Report Exhibition The Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African-American Art: Works on Paper June 6–August 23, 2009 This popular exhibition of more than fifty African-American artists included works from the late 1800s to the early years of this century. Drawn from one of the most esteemed private collections of works by African-American artists, this special exhibition featured over ninety works by such luminaries as Elizabeth Catlett, William H. Johnson, and Charles White. This exhibition was organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, California. First Look: Masterworks of American Photography December 5, 2008–June 7, 2009 This was the first time these works—all part of the Amon Carter Museum’s photography collection— have been exhibited at the museum. Taken together, they reflect the diversity and richness of an American visual tradition. Above left: In conjunction with the exhibition The Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of AfricanAmerican Art: Works on Paper, the Fort Worth music ensemble Of Many Colors performed in the museum’s auditorium. 12 2009 Annual Report High Modernism: Alfred Stieglitz and His Legacy March 7–June 28, 2009 Modern art photography is widely recognized as being born in the 1910s from the work of Alfred Stieglitz and his handpicked group of artists. Visitors followed the pathway set by Stieglitz and his colleagues in this exhibition of photographs that blended sharp focus, fine printing, and an overt subscription to beauty. African-American Art: Selections from the Amon Carter Museum’s Collection June 6–August 23, 2009 Concurrent to the special exhibition of works from the Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection, this selection from the Carter’s holdings featured prints and drawings by African-American artists represented in the collection. Above right: The Carter holds an extensive number of prints made at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop during the 1960s. The 2009 rotations of these holdings included a series of prints made by the renowned Mexican painter Rufino Tamayo. Masterworks of American Photography: Moments in Time June 19, 2009–January 3, 2010 This sampling of works from the Carter’s permanent collection journeyed through photography’s history and explored the medium’s unique relationship to time. Circle of Friends: Portraits of Artists August 1–November 29, 2009 With the advent of American modernism, artists began making portraits of one another with increasing regularity. Photographers made portraits to document the members of their artistic communities, but in so doing they also created works that embodied their artistic and personal ambitions. Tamarind Lithography Workshop This ongoing exhibition displays a rotation of prints made at the landmark Tamarind Lithography Workshop, which was founded in Los Angeles in 1960 as a means to resuscitate the languishing art of lithography. In 2009 the museum mounted two exhibitions from these holdings: Allen Jones and Nicholas Krushenick: Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Rufino Tamayo: Tamarind Lithography Workshop. Above: The exhibition Views and Visions: Prints of the American West included several rare, nineteenth-century publications from the museum’s library holdings. 2009 Annual Report 13 Conservation and Preservation Central to the mission of conservation and preservation, the Carter’s staff works to ensure that handling, display, or environmental conditions do not damage the irreplaceable works of art in its collection. The Carter maintains an expansive, stateof-the-art conservation lab for the treatment of works on paper and photographs. The museum’s paintings are examined and treated in the conservation lab housed in the Kimbell Art Museum and operated jointly by the two museums. In 2009, the museum’s staff of four conservators treated a total of 9 paintings, 546 photographs, and 20 works on paper. Staff examined and documented the condition of more than 900 additional works toward identifying and prioritizing candidates for treatment. 14 2009 Annual Report Beyond treating and examining works of art, conservators are intimately involved in monitoring and managing the environment of the museum’s galleries as well. In 2009, they used passive samplers throughout the museum galleries and art storage areas to monitor the performance of the museum’s carbon filters, which help keep the air in the museum pollutant-free. Below left: Ogawa passive samplers are used to monitor gaseous pollutant levels in the museum’s galleries and vaults. In 2009, the Carter’s team of conservators used the samplers to perform a comprehensive assessment of the air quality in the museum’s art spaces. Below right: Sylvie Pénichon, conservator of photographs at the museum, uses a stereomicroscope to consolidate the edges of a flaking photograph with a solution of gelatin. Above and Right: Data harvested from examinations with an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer can be used to determine what pigments an artist used in a particular work, reveal technique shifts, and establish a baseline of information about the artist’s materials to help determine a work’s authenticity. Jodie Utter, the Carter’s conservator of works on paper, continued her work in 2009 on a comprehensive elemental pigment analysis of Charles M. Russell’s watercolors. Her research is to be published in 2012 in a catalogue of the artist’s works on paper. 2009 Annual Report 15 Education The mission of the Carter’s Education Department is to create programs and opportunities for visitors and the community to enjoy and learn about American art and the Amon Carter Museum. The museum offers a wide variety of creative, didactic programs that are free, open to the public, and designed to create meaningful connections with visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. With a staff of fifteen, including a team of six professional Gallery Teachers, plus a core of more than thirty docents, the Education Department conducted 149 programs and 780 tours in 2009. More than 19,000 students toured the museum. It was a particularly rewarding year for Sharing the Past Through Art. Now in its third year, the interactive tour serves those who have Alzheimer’s, along with their caregivers. More than 400 people took part in the program in 2009. Participants discuss artists, themes, and exhibitions while using artworks to connect to past experiences. The program was covered by WFAA Channel 8 television and NBC 5, whose affiliate stations across the country, from Alaska to Alabama, ran the story as well. In November, Sharing the Past Through Art was the subject of a three-page feature story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Stacy Fuller, head of education at the Carter oversees the program and has helped educators launch similar programs at the Kimbell Art Museum; the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and the Walker Arts Center. 16 2009 Annual Report The department’s distance learning program flourished in 2009. The live, two-way audio and video broadcasts bring the museum to classrooms across the country. Focusing on the Carter’s collection, the programs engage students and teachers with museum staff in discussions and activities exploring the intersection of art, history, culture, language arts, and science. In 2009, the department conducted 162 broadcasts to a total of 429 schools, reaching a total of 15,164 individuals. The distance learning program went international in 2009 as well, serving middle-school and secondary students in Alberta, Canada. The Education Department’s Teaching Resource Center (TRC) is a lending library of free resources on American art, history, and artmaking techniques. The TRC is also a regional distributor for the National Gallery of Art’s extension programs. Nancy Strickland (left), the museum’s distance learning and docent program manager, engages children’s author Patricia MacLachlan in the galleries during a distance learning broadcast. Research The lending library provided 755 loaned resources and 1,464 digital images for 10,726 teachers and students in 2009. The following pages show a comprehensive list of Education Department programs offered in 2009, along with attendance figures. For more on these ongoing programs and new offerings from the museum, visit cartermuseum.org. These activities, cultivated across the museum’s departmental spectrum, are intrinsic to the institution’s mission. Library The Amon Carter Museum library is a research destination for the study of American art. The facility houses 50,000 volumes; a general archive; subscriptions to more than 130 periodicals; rare, illustrated volumes from the past two centuries of American publishing; and 14 million primary source documents through the Smithsonian Institution’s Archives of American art. The library’s expansive reading room, which offers free Wi-Fi service, is available to visiting scholars, students, and the general public. In 2009, library staff fielded nearly 5,500 research queries and processed 365 new items into the library collection. The library transitioned as well to a paperless checkout process that now dovetails with the museum’s integrated library system with Texas Christian University. Beyond this, the library staff organized two exhibitions in the reading room in 2009, both of which featured rare volumes from the collection. Aaron Carico, PhD candidate in American studies at Yale University, was the library’s Davidson Family Fellow for 2009. The fellowship provides support for scholars working at the doctoral or post-doctoral level to research topics in the history of American art that relate to objects in the museum’s collection. Carico began his research appointment on July 13 and 20 2009 Annual Report delivered his public lecture on August 14 entitled Portrait as Still Life: Slavery, the Politics of Realism, and William Harnett’s Attention, Company! Publications The Amon Carter Museum actively publishes books that support its mission, collections, and exhibitions. During the museum’s nearly fifty years of operation, the Publications Department has produced almost 190 books. In 2009, the department published The 100 Best Illustrated Letters of Charles M. Russell (Fort Worth: Amon Carter Museum). The Fort Worth Business Press noted that “the [book’s] crowning touch is a removable facsimile letter, complete with envelope, which lends the dreamlike illusion that one has received a piece of correspondence from the Great Man himself.” The Amon Carter Museum’s Web site received 202,841 unique visits in 2009, a 19 percent increase from 2008. This rise was in part due to the museum’s 2009 launch of RemingtonAndRussell. org, a comprehensive e-publication on the work of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Made possible by the Jane and John Justin Foundation, the site offers hundreds of photographs of the two artists, biographical timelines, didactic videos, bibliographies, teaching resources, and every work by Remington and Russell in the museum’s collection—some 400 objects. The site was awarded a Silver Medal by the Texas Association of Museums. For the catalogue Intimate Modernism: Fort Worth Circle Artists in the 1940s (Fort Worth: Amon Carter Museum, 2008), the museum was awarded the Gold Medal and named Judges Favorite by the Texas Association of Museums in their 2009 Wilder Awards competition. The book was also awarded the year’s Publication Award by the Center for the Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art. The museum’s exhibition catalogue Sentimental Journey: The Art of Alfred Jacob Miller (Fort Worth: Amon Carter Museum, 2008) was recognized in the Western Historical Quarterly (spring 2010) for its “excellent production values. In an era when quality in printing is often overlooked,” the review read, “it is a pleasure to read and handle a book in which every page is laid out with care and attention to detail…. This text sets a high standard and, one hopes, presages a more pervasive commitment on the part of American museums to innovative scholarship and its quality publication.” Over the course of the year, the department produced about 150 printed pieces (including ads, press releases, rack cards, invitations, brochures, signage, etc.); edited more than 800 labels; provided the museum’s graphic design; maintained the museum’s Web site; produced two issues of the members’ magazine, Program; and compiled the 2008 Annual Report. Top: The reading room in the museum’s library offers free Wi-Fi to visitors. Bottom: The homepage of RemingtonAndRussell.org, the museum’s comprehensive Web site on the work of Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell. Launched in 2009, the site was awarded a Silver Medal by the Texas Association of Museums. 2009 Annual Report 21 Professional Presentations, Programs, and Offices Stacy Fuller, head of education, was elected to serve on the board of directors for the Museum Education Roundtable (MER), an international organization dedicated to enriching and promoting the field of museum education. Fuller also presented two sessions at the Texas Art Education Association’s annual conference in San Antonio: Focus on Great American Artists: The Nineteenth Century and Using Photographs to Build Interdisciplinary Connections. She presented two sessions, one with educators from the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, at the National Art Education Association’s annual conference in Minneapolis. Katherine Moloney, the museum’s teaching resources coordinator, served as leader of the Informal Educators of Fort Worth, an organization of area educators in informallearning environments who share best practices in museum education. Moloney also served as a guest lecturer for the University of North Texas School of Information Sciences graduate class on distributed librarianship and was elected chair of the Texas/Oklahoma Chapter of the Visual Resources Association. 22 2009 Annual Report Jessica May, assistant curator of photographs, participated in the scholarly panel American Studies Outside the Academy during the annual meeting of the American Studies Association in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She was also a guest lecturer at the School of Art at Texas Tech University and participated in the photography panel One Medium, Three Views at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas. Left: The new Remington and Russell Study Galleries, made possible by the Jane and John Justin Foundation, were completed in 2009. The mezzanine-level spaces include more than seventy works by the two artists, along with a small library of related books, a didactic video explaining the complicated lost-wax casting process, and computer stations featuring the related Web site RemingtonAndRussell.org, the most comprehensive site available on the two artists. Sylvie Pénichon, conservator of photographs, presented at The Care and Handling of Photographs in Your Collection, a one-day workshop for members of the Collection Managers Committee Group of the Texas Association of Museums; the workshop was hosted by the Carter. Pénichon served as an instructor at two weeklong courses in 2009 as well. The first, Collaborative Mellon Workshop in Photograph Conservation: Conservation Issues in Contemporary Photography: 20th Century Color, was hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. The second, Color Photography, was at the International Post-graduate Course in Photograph Conservation at the National School for Conservation in Mexico City. Pénichon was also elected Chair of the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation (FAIC) Photograph Conservation Collaborative Workshops Advisory Committee; this committee plans and organizes photographic conservation workshops as part of a $1 million endowment grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. John Rohrbach, senior curator of photographs, was invited in 2009 to review artist portfolios for Review LA, among the foremost art fairs in the country. In addition to serving as in-house curator for Barbara Crane: Challenging Vision, he hosted a lecture by the photographer at the annual conference of the Society for Photographic Education, the principal professional group for photography professors at the university level. Rohrbach also authored an article on photographer Pete Turner for the magazine Color ( January 2010). Rick Stewart, senior curator of western painting and sculpture, supervised the museum’s 2009 scholarly symposium held in conjunction with the exhibition Sentimental Journey: The Art of Alfred Jacob Miller. Miller was the first Anglo artist to journey into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. Panelists including John Mack Faragher (Yale University), Jennifer Greenhill (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign), Kenneth Haltman (University of Oklahoma), and Director Ron Tyler discussed Miller’s work within the broader contexts of American Indian imagery, western humor, and sentimentalism. 2009 Annual Report 23 Honor Roll of Contributors Fiscal Year 10.1.2008 through 9.30.2009 The Amon Carter Museum deeply appreciates the contributions and gifts received from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and our many devoted members and friends.
