Barry was a long serving member of the College community and in his capacity as Head of Physics and Science Co-ordinator personified the academic rigour, thirst for knowledge and healthy scepticism required in all great scientists. It is therefore very fitting that the award goes this year to an outstanding science student, Sophie Cooper. This award does perhaps bear a little introduction as you may wonder who David Atherton is and why he is sponsoring an award for the ‘most worthy’ student. David was a pupil at Winstanley’s predecessor, UpHolland Grammar school. He then served the college as an economics teacher, head of department and senior manager for over forty years, making him the college’s longest serving member. It was for this reason that we asked David to sponsor an award. He chose ‘the most worthy student’ award because of a rather poignant local story from the First World War. UpHolland Grammar School gave an annual medal to ‘the most worthy’ student, which in 1913 was awarded to Joseph Diggle. When in 1918 Joseph Diggle was killed on active service in France, his family returned the medal to the school and asked that it be kept in his memory. David is keeping this memory alive by sponsoring the award and this year’s deserving winner is Mabel Shen. Students at Winstanley College have many opportunities to excel in their academic studies, sporting and enrichment activities. The Governors’ award for academic achievement recognises both academic ability and the potential to excel combined with an effective balance between enrichment and other interests. The winner of the Governors’ Award for Academic Achievement is Kayleigh Gibson.
