Bus driver confesses to
horrific murder

21-year-old student was brutally
murdered in Krakow in the early
hours of Saturday morning after
making her way home from a private party.
A second-year history and philosophy
student at the University of Kent, Miss
Zaks, who had both British and Polish
citizenship, had been living and working
in Krakow over the summer.
At around 3am on Saturday she boarded
a 610 night bus but soon found herself
involved in an argument with the driver,
who then attacked her with a hammer.
Her body was later found face down in a
water-filled ditch near a railway line.
44-year-old Miroslaw L. appeared in a
Krakow court to face the murder charges
five days later and admitted attacking the
young student. Police found no evidence of
sexual assault and the victim had not been
robbed.
“The man has confessed to attacking the
girl and leaving her in a ditch, but has said
he didn’t mean to kill her,” said Dariusz
Nowak, a police spokesman.
According to the police and testimony
given by the driver, the two got into a
violent argument when she was the only
passenger left on the bus, possibly because
he had driven past her stop. At some point
they fought and Miroslaw L. apparently
seized what is believed to have been an

emergency hammer from the bus and
struck the student a number of times.
The driver then drove the bus off his
normal route and dumped the body near
the railway line before returning to his
scheduled route. Her body was found by a
passer by later the same day.
Police said the accused had shown
them where he had hidden the murder
weapon. He explained, apparently, that
he carried the hammer, designed to break
bus windows in an emergency, for self
protection when driving night buses.

There had been speculation that
the driver might have faced the lesser
charge of manslaughter but in the end
prosecutors pursued murder charges.
If found guilty, Miroslaw L. faces the
possibility of spending the rest of his life
behind bars.
Grant Pooke, Miss Zaks’ head of her
department at Kent University, described
the girl as an “exceptional” student, while
her Polish parents have flown to Krakow to
help the police with the investigation and
repatriate the body of their daughter.

Warsaw Uprising ‘catastrophe’
Walbrzych corruption deepens
One step from paradise

Leading Civic Platform (PO) politicians
in Walbrzych stand accused of demanding “protection money” by the ex-director
of the Urban Transport Company (MPK),

Wisla Krakow took a giant step towards
qualifying for the first round proper of the
Champions League, with a confident 3-1
victory over Litex Lovech this Wednesday
night. Star of the show was Wisla’s Israeli
playmaker, Maor Melikson, who scored
the first two goals. On Friday the Krakow
team will discover who stands in their way
to the promised land.

“How did it happen that an 80 tonne

a 30-40cm birch trunk is like a twig in

that this caused this entire, powerful 80 tonne

W
hatever your
opinions
on Donald
Tusk are, you’ve got to
award the man a certain
amount of kudos for his
billboard comment.
No matter how pre-planned it was,
claiming he was not the best looking
candidate in his party when asked if
he would appear on posters for the
upcoming elections was a cool move
- albeit it a glaringly obvious swipe
at a certain PM-wannabe whose face
has cropped up around the country
accompanied by the caption “‘Prime
Minister Kaczynski - Time for a bold
decision”.
But Tusk’s attempt at humour will
do little to appease the high level of
political sensitivity still sitting heavily
in the air.
Only this week, the PM was met by
a torrent of boos, jeers and whistles as
he stepped up to lay down a wreath at a
ceremony commemorating those who took
part in the Warsaw Uprising.
Of course I shouldn’t have to mention
that the Warsaw Uprising is a source of
great pride amongst Poles young and
old and is, rightly so, a well-respected
anniversary each year.
So you have to ask what the hell these
people were thinking.
As anyone will tell you, I’m all for giving
politicians the rough ride they deserve.
Whether it be on a high-profile TV debate
or at street level, everyone should have
the right to make their feelings heard. But
there’s a time and a place and a ceremony
to remember those who took part in one
of the country’s bravest and most tragic
battles is certainly not it.
The jeers benefitted no one. Not PM
Tusk, not those who served in the Uprising
and not those who contributed towards
the disturbances. All it did was put an
even sadder slant on an already sad and
emotional event.
“I don’t like looking at myself on posters ...
There are much better looking faces within
Civic Platform.” PM Tusk responds to
questions over whether he will appear on
billboards for the general election.
“Your screams will not change anything.”
Jerzy Miller ignores PiS politician Antoni
Macierewicz’s protests over the recent
Miller report.
Re: Right-wing camp cancelled
Great to see this ONR event was
cancelled. We’ve also seen support dwindle
for Giertych’s Liga Polskich Rodzin and
Mlodziez Wszechpolska. In the future less
and less Poles will support Kaczynski’s
PiS and Rydzyk’s Radio Maryja empire.
Thank God the Polish people are gradually
distancing themselves from far-right hypercatholic ultra-nationalism.

Re: Letter from J.S. in NPE 131
As much I agree with the sentiment of your
letter, I can’t agree with the conclusion! Let
us have the debate in public and see them
defend the indefensible. Only then will we be
able to beat them at their own game.
Your example of the PiS party is a great
example. If they had the chance they would
hide behind a ban, a legal smoke screen.
Better to let them have their ‘day’ and tell us
the rationale behind their weak and foolish
beliefs. This would be educational for the
masses and disastrous for these movements.
Is it stupid to give them a platform? They have
that already, and they use lies, deception and
propaganda on weak impressionable people.
We stop such things by being better,
smarter and clearer.

Kids in shooting PM sacks after Miller Report
shocker
T
T
wo children were shot this week in
separate incidents in the north west
of Poland.
The first case involved a nineyear-old girl from the town of Lobez
(Zachodniopomorskie region) who was shot
in the neck while playing in the back yard.
According to news site TVN24, after the
incident the girl was taken to her parents
by a 50-year-old neighbour who claimed to
be the only witness to the event. She was
then rushed immediately to hospital to
have the bullet removed.
However after finding a gun in his garden,
police have since arrested the 50-year-old
man who has admitted his guilt, claiming
he was simply “shooting at rats”.
The child is said to be in a stable
condition. “She was just playing in her
yard when she suddenly felt a sharp pain
in her neck,” says Miroslaw Rudzinska,
a spokeswoman for Szczecin police. “It
turned out it was a gunshot wound.”
The man now faces three years behind bars.
In another incident, an eight-year-old
boy was shot in the stomach in Gorzow
Wielkopolski (Lubuskie region) although he
is not thought to be in a serious condition.
Police claim the boy was shot by a hunter but
that the shooting was an accident. According
to Artur Chorazy of the Gorzow police, there
is no need to keep the man detained at present.
hree air-force generals and 10 other
senior officers were sacked as heads
continued to roll in the wake of the
Miller report into the Smolensk air disaster.
Speaking at a press conference on
Thursday, defence minister Tomasz
Siemoniak said the government was
reacting quickly to the report that listed
a series of damning failings in air force
procedures and training that contributed
to the disaster.
He also announced that 36 Squadron,
the unit responsible for government and
presidential flights, would be disbanded.
“We are committed to implementing
as quickly and painlessly as possible the
recommendations made in the Miller
report,” he told reporters.
The minister himself took over from
Bogdan Klich, who stepped down after the
report’s publication.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk explained
that those being given the boot had failed
in their responsibilities, and that more
officers would have been sacked, if they
had not already left the service.
“For some people this will be an
earthquake. For others it will be the end
of their careers,” said Mr Tusk, adding that
among those fired was General Czeslaw
Pietas, the deputy defence minister.
The culling of the top brass came as the
latest tumultuous chapter in the reaction to
the report written by a committee chaired
by interior minister Jerzy Miller.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, Law and Justice
leader and twin of the late President
Lech Kaczynski, went on the offensive
against the report, claiming it had many
shortcomings and that his brother had
died as a result of a “political war” waged
against him by the government.
Mr Kaczynski said the war had led to
his brother’s security being downgraded,
and that this was a crucial factor behind
the crash. He also said Donald Tusk should
resign as ultimate responsibility for the
crash lay with him.
Law and Justice (PiS) firebrand MP
Antoni Macierewicz threw more petrol
on the fire by claiming the report had
been translated into Polish from Russian
- rather than the other way round - there
by insinuating the report was Moscow’s
creation.
The heated political reaction to the report
is set to colour the forthcoming election
campaign, with Law and Justice no doubt
hoping to exploit any lingering doubts over
the causes of the crash and any disquiet
Poles may have over the government’s
handling of the accident investigation for
political gain.
After the publication of the Russian
report, which put nearly all the blame
on Poland, the government’s popularity
fell, but latest report may not have the
same affect. Opinion polls show that the
majority of Poles feel that Miller’s inquiry
has got the closest to the truth.

Warsaw Uprising ‘Plastered’ driver kills pedestrian
‘catastrophe’
A
D
onald Tusk and Radek Sikorski
came in for a torrid time as Poland paused to mark the 67th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising, one
of the most hallowed dates in the Polish
calendar.
The prime minister was subject to
whistles and boos as he laid flowers at a
monument for the fallen in a Warsaw
cemetery while the foreign minister came
under assault for describing the Uprising
as a “national catastrophe” on his Twitter
page.
General Zbigniew Scibor-Rylskim,
president of the Association of Warsaw
Insurgents and one of the organisers of
the official ceremonies at the Powazki
cemetery, had called for the dead to
be respected following an outbreak
of booing at last year’s ceremony. But
his words fell on deaf ears when the
prime minister stepped forward to lay a
wreath as a small number in the crowd
made clear that even the memory of the
Warsaw Uprising was not above domestic
politics.
When Law and Justice (PiS) leader
Jaroslaw Kaczynski laid his floral tribute
the same people applauded.
The boos and whistles angered Home
Army veterans and the families of those
who died with one elderly woman calling
it “disgraceful”, while others pointed out
that even during the communist days the
crowds were better behaved.
The underlying political disputes that
marred the Powazki ceremony surfaced
again over Mr Sikorski’s description of
the Uprising as a “national catastrophe”.
Although he later apologised to veterans,
Law and Justice described his comments
as “unacceptable” and claimed he was
“undermining the heroic legacy” of the
battle.
The spats revealed the still deep, and at
times unbridgeable, political divides that
still exist in Poland. Beating a patriotic
drum, Law and Justice politicians view
with askance and suspicion their rivals in
the Civic Platform (PO) camp, regarding
then as untrustworthy and unwilling to
fight for what they regard as Poland’s best
interests.
In return Civic Platform supporters
often regard their Law and Justice peers
as people blinkered by an obsession
with history and the notion that they
are somehow the protectors of a “true”
Poland.
21-year-old woman was arrested
this week for killing a pedestrian
while driving with her leg in plaster.
Lucyna M. lost control of the BMW
in the southern town of Kluczbork and
ploughed into two people. One man, aged
27, was killed while the other aged 26 was
rushed to hospital.
According to reports by TVN, the driver
has no driving license and told police she
had climbed behind the wheel because her
friend was under the influence of alcohol.
She also told authorities she was
pregnant, although this claim has since
been proven to be false.
“We can confirm that the woman
involved in the crash is in fact not pregnant,”
said Lidia Sieradzka, a spokesperson from
the Opole Prosecution Office. “We can
safely rule this out.”
However, it has also been announced that
police found what is believed to be traces
of marijuana in the car. If blood tests show
that the woman had drugs in her system,
the potential prison sentence could increase
from eight years, to a maximum of 12.
The news comes during a week which
has seen an extremely high number of
tragic traffic accidents.
In another incident, two people were
killed on the A2 motorway near the
small village of Giecz on their way to the
Woodstock festival. The driver of the Fiat
Panda and one of the passengers were
taken to hospital after the car collided with
a truck, but the two other passengers (aged
29 and 32) were not so lucky.
Three other passengers were killed and three
more injured during an accident involving a
bus carrying construction workers to their
jobs. The crash took place on Monday morning
in the south-western village of Woliborz and,
according to initial reports, was a result of the
driver falling asleep at the wheel.

Con artist caught
A man from Bialystok has been arrested for
fraud after cheating an OAP out of PLN 20,000.
According to Fakt, 23-year-old Piotr K.
contacted 76-year-old Krystyna of Lublin
claiming to be her son and that he need to pay
compensation to victims for an accident he
had caused in order to avoid jail.
After transferring her life savings and borrowing
more to make up the figure, Krystyna realised
she had been conned and contacted the police.
Upon arrest, Piotr K. confessed to the crime and
it has since been revealed that he has been
involved in at least 18 similar cases.
The man now faces time behind bars.
Critical head injury
A teenager is in a critical condition after leaning
out of a travelling train window and hitting his
head on a sign next to the tracks.
According to Gazeta Wyborcza, the 18-yearold was making his way to the Przystanek
Woodstock festival with a group of friends
when the accident occurred.
“His friends immediately stopped the train
and the man was taken to hospital in an
ambulance,” said Andrzej Borowiak, a
spokesman for Wielkopolska police. “The
incident occurred shortly after the train left
Poznan station and at present we still don’t
know exactly why he leaned out the window.”
Mr Borowiak added that the man was not
under the influence of alcohol.
Election date announced
President Komorowski officially announced
this week that the upcoming Polish general
elections will take place on October 9.
Urging all those eligible to vote to do so during
a press conference, Mr Komorowski stated “We
will be applying for a number of new solutions
for this election to ensure as high a turnout as
possible. We will be making it easier for people
with disabilities and for those living abroad
too.”
In addition to this, the President also added
that he would not be actively campaigning on
behalf of ruling party Civic Platform (PO).
Pilgrims injured in car accident
Eleven people were injured this week when a
car drove into a group of pilgrims in the south
of Poland.
Reports state that the accident occurred in
the small village of Dolna while the group were
making their way to the Jasna Gora Monastery
in Czestochowa - August being a month which
witnesses over 250,000 descend upon the holy
city from all across the country.
In total, 11 people were taken to hospital, three
suffering serious injuries, the rest from bruises
and shock.
Marzena Grzegorczyk, a spokesperson for
Opole police, told TVN that the 59-year-old
driver was not under the influence of alcohol
at the time of the accident.

A bit of lightning relief
A
couple from the south of Poland
are thanking their lucky stars after
their house was struck by light-
ning.
Apolinary and his wife Janina, both
56-year-old farmers from the village of
Goloszyce, were asleep when the lightning
bolt struck their home, smashing windows
and destroying their furniture.
According to daily Fakt, the couple are
just thankful to be alive. “We still can’t
quite believe what has happened to us,”
says Janina. “It a miracle and we just thank
God that we are still here.”
With a storm raging outside, the pair
finished their dinner and went to bed, with
their daughter and granddaughter asleep
in the next room.
However the family was soon woken up
just after midnight, as lightning struck the
farmhouse causing the couple to literally
fall from their beds.
“Looking at what is left of the house and
our belongings, it’s incredible we all survived,” Janina continues.
The lightning bolt struck the chimney,
destroying a partition wall and ruining
most of their electrical appliances such as
the television, microwave and refrigerator.
“Right away I called the fire service,
but there was nothing they could do
as there were no fires at all,” adds her
husband. “What makes it even more
amazing is that the house is made of
wood!”
Six years ago the couple’s barn was destroyed in similar circumstances when it
was hit during a storm, but this time they
are even more thankful.
“The only things that weren’t ruined were
these,” says Janina, holding up framed images of Jesus Christ. “They dropped from
the walls, but like us they survived.

know I’m setting off a bomb,” Zarzecki told
reporters from Super Express.
Zarzecki is not the only one to inform
prosecutors of possible corruption. The
current MPK managing director, Andrzej

the company’s accounts. Kosior was recently
appointed director by the city’s commissar,

Szelemej, though, denies any such

The company’s financial situation was a

Chamber of Control and the Tax Inspection
Authority, and they found nothing.”
Allegations have also reached the
Central Anticorruption Bureau (CBA),
who received an anonymous tip-off that
funds had been paid directly into the PO
election budget. “Yes, there is a witness and
he did testify to that effect. The matter is
being looked into by the Wroclaw office,”
a CBA worker told Gazeta.pl. Kruczkowski
described it as, “Some kind of science
fiction.”
A

Vikings were
rescued by workers at a resort in the
town of Police after
their longboat sank
late on Tuesday evening. The Vikings,
who are actually German, were sailing in
their boat to an annual gathering of Viking
enthusiasts held on the nearby island of
Wolin. However, their replica longboat was
upturned by a high wave and all their possessions washed overboard. The craft then
began to sink and the crew were rescued by
workers from a nearby holiday resort.
Gabriela Gilun, a resort worker, told
reporters that the two men and one woman
were in dire straits. “They had absolutely
nothing left, not even clothing. They were
in their swimming costumes. We organised
some dry clothes and food for them.” One
of the castaways required medical attention
for a gashed leg, but after a brief visit to
hospital was released.
The resort workers then got together
and managed to drag the sunken longboat
onto land. “Everyone was involved,
managers, lifeguards, the lot. Some of their
possessions were beyond saving, others,
like the clothing, we were able to dry out,”
continued Ms Gilun.
Despite the setback, the intrepid Vikings
were determined to continue on their way

signatures have been
gathered for a petition to halt the privatisation of the Lotos
Group, the Gdanskbased oil refiner, and sent to the Marshall
of the Sejm. The petition was organised by
the Legislative Initiative Committee (KIU),
supported by the Law and Justice (PiS) party. In order for a private petition to require
the attention of parliament, it must gather
over 100,000 signatures, something KIU
has massively exceeded.
Krzysztof Steckiewicz, the legal
representative for the KIU told reporters,
“It wasn’t easy. Very few people signed up
initially. Only once we made a desperate
appeal via the media did things start
moving. The appeal was especially picked
up on by Radio Maryja and TV Trwam,
and it was mainly thanks to them that the
lists of signatures began to avalanche.”
Once the Marshall receives the petition,
he will have three months to prepare a
bill on it for voting. “We’re hoping the bill
will receive its first reading during this
parliament,” said Steckiewicz. The final
decision regarding the group’s privatisation
is expected to be taken during the next
parliament, around the turn of the new
year.
No train to Hel
S
trike action looms on regional train services in the Gdansk area it was announced
this Thursday. The strike could affect holidaymakers in the region as it will make it much
more difficult to reach popular locations like
Hel or Malbork from the Tri-city. The strike is
set to begin on August 10 and will form part
of similar action across the country. Leszek
Mietek, leader of the Confederation of Rail
Unions, told reporters, “We’ve been asking
for negotiations and a “Round Table” for ages,
and we’ve just been ignored.”
Bitter harvest
A
14-year-old boy was in a serious condition in hospital in Gdansk this
Wednesday after riding his moped into an
oncoming combine harvester. The boy was
riding along a country lane at high speed,
with his mother riding pillion behind him.
The moped raced round a corner directly
into the path of the harvester.
The boy’s condition was so bad he was
flown to hospital by helicopter, the mother
was taken to Tczew by ambulance. Police
are investigating the incident.

Dangerous crossing
L
odz police are investigating an incident in which a woman was killed
on a pedestrian crossing this Thursday
when she was hit by an HGV. The driver
of the lorry apparently didn’t even notice
anything, and was only stopped by witnesses, who caught him at the next junction.
It appears the truck, driven by a
48-year-old man from Garwolin, was
filtering left on the “green arrow”
system, but failed to spot the woman who
was on the pedestrian crossing, which
also was on green, at the same time. The
HGV apparently drove straight over her
without stopping, killing her instantly.
The driver was not drunk at the time of
the incident.

Swiss franc causes panic
P
olish home owners who have taken
out loans in the Swiss franc have
been left with their hearts in their
mouths this week as exchange rates went
through the roof.
According to TVN24, the current
value of the franc (around PLN 3.74) is
the highest it has ever been against the
zloty causing fears amongst those with
either loans or mortgages taken out in
the currency.
Statistics released earlier this week point
out that total retail sales throughout the
country had risen by 7.4 percent due to low
inflation.
However calls from foreign markets for
the Swiss National Bank (SNB) to step in
and help will most likely fall on deaf ears as
an attempt to intervene last year resulted in
a loss of around CHF 21 bln.
“Of course there are similar calls this
time round for intervention,” states Marek
Rogalski, an analyst at investment and
finance firm DM BOS.
“You can see a clear change in the
franc and many are of course wondering
whether or not there has been any
intervention by the SNB to reduce it. But
of course, there’s no evidence,” says Rafal
Wojda of TVN.
Food exports fruitful
N
ew statistics show that Poland’s
food exports are up compared
with the same time last year, despite the recent E. coli-based fruit and
vegetable dispute with neighbours Russia.
According to Dziennik Gazeta
Prawna, analysts have estimated that
Polish food producers will have sent
approximately PLN 58.5 bln worth of
food to foreign countries by the end of
the year.
At present, the amount of food
send abroad is already 15.6 percent up
compared with the same time in 2010.
The paper states that increased food
prices around the globe will contribute
towards Poland seeing a higher return in
profits.
It went on to add that since joining
the European Union seven years ago,
the country’s food market exports have
tripled with around two-thirds of its
food produce being sold to fellow EU
members.
Part of the reason for this, according
to analysts, is Poland’s ability to compete
in the market due to its prices for poultry
products being around 40 percent cheaper
than the EU average.

Jazzy coin wins snazzy prize
A Polish coin dedicated to famed jazz musician and
composer Krzysztof Komeda has been awarded the title
of the world’s most beautiful coin.
The prize was given at Italy’s famed ‘Vicenza Numismatica’
competition and, according to the official website, was
handed out due to both its aesthetics and the message
it sends out.
The silver coin was designed by Roussanka
Nowakowska and produced by the Mint of Poland
which states it was chosen due to its “romantic
portrayal of the pianist”.
Decline in car sales
Car sales dropped by 5 percent last month in Poland according
to a new report by motoring research experts Samar.
The statistics, published in daily Gazeta Wyborcza, show
that since January this year, 160,500 new passenger cars
have been sold throughout the country - almost 6 percent
down on last year.
However, the month of February did see a slight increase in
the number of newly registered automobiles - 1.4 percent.
“The uncertain economic situation coupled with a weak
exchange rate against the euro has largely affected the
demand for new cars,” said Samar.

Going Green
I
f you are in the position where you have
money to invest right now, one area that
you should consider investing in is green
or sustainable energy funds
Renewable energy is currently on
everyone’s agenda, with industries
ranging from auto manufacturing to
construction and real estate to leisure all
striving to find more sustainable ways to
operate.
You only have to read the real estate press
and see the constant reference to “green”
buildings and LEED certification to see the
impact on that particular sector.
To be honest, it doesn’t even really
matter whether you believe that climate
change is a result of our actions or not. The
fact is that the people signing the cheques
do believe it (or at least they want to be seen
to believe it).
Because renewable energy will only
continue to advance (and traditional
sources of energy will likely become
more expensive), it is in an investor’s
interest to invest in companies that
are creating or utilizing this form of
energy. These companies will be more
likely to have cost efficient operations
and will be able to rapidly grow and
expand.
The fact of the matter is that in the next
few years, renewable energy companies
and those utilizing their services have
the potential for sizeable investment
returns.
These
companies
will
become
economic power houses driving both
national and local economies by
providing jobs and cleaner products to
consumers. If you think that this sounds
unrealistic, think of where Amazon was
only 10 years ago.

ring on the dancing

the ice bucket and grab
yourself some bunting.
This, as they say, is it. I’m
off. After a year of filing columns for the New Poland Express
while busily writing and researching God
knows how many city guides across Poland, the time has come to get back to the
day job: being Editor-in-chief of In Your
Pocket. There’s a new-look website to develop, a new mobile application to implement and more new Pockets than I can
keep up with. Duty calls, and so - having
put in place two very good writers - this
will be my last NPE column.
Given that the two new writers we now
have in Poland (both of whom had to pass
our notoriously difficult selection process,
whereby we send them to a city in Belarus
nobody can spell with no instructions, no
money and see what happens) have been
in place for a couple of months now, it is
clear that as fresh-faced newbies they have
far more interesting things to say about
Poland than a jaundiced old hack whose
seen it all, and then some, such as myself.
They will also of course have the advantage
of actually living in Poland: my trips,
though frequent, are always far too short
to ever really get my teeth into something.
No sooner have you researched a guide
than its time to go home again.
So without placing too much pressure
on our new editors, I think we can all
be sure that they will be able to come up
with something a little extra each week
above and beyond what I have been able
to. Expect far more by the way of tips as to
what’s new and hot (or what’s crap and to
be avoided) from all over Poland. As you
will no doubt come to realise, being an
In Your Pocket writer means spending a
great deal of time on the road.
So that’s just about it from me. I will still
(alas for some...) be making regular visits
to Poland, a country I have grown to love
and hate in just about equal measure. But
before I do sign off, two quick personal
opinions which will probably get me shot
in a few places...
1. My favourite Polish city is Wroclaw,
by a country mile. If you’ve read Wroclaw
guides over the past year or so (or indeed
paid attention to this column) you will
know why.
2. My least favourite thing about Poland
remains the inability of so many people
living in this country (and I deliberately
refrain from saying Poles: many, many
other nationalities living here are just as
guilty) to form an orderly queue.
So there, I’ve said it. On that bombshell,
you’ll hear not another word from me.

One step from paradise
W
isla Krakow took a giant step towards the first round proper of the
Champions league with a confident
3-1 victory over Litex Lovech this Wednesday
night. Star of the show was Wisla’s Israeli playmaker, Maor Melikson, who scored the first two
goals. Victory in the next two-leg match would
mean a Polish team playing in the Champions
League for the first time in fifteen years.
Not that Wisla are very Polish at the
moment – with a Dutch manager and a
raft of foreign players, only two members
of Wednesday’s team were actually Polish.
But fans won’t care if the side play like they
did this week. The result was never really
in doubt, as Wisla picked up from their 2-1
win in Bulgaria. The extra cushion of two
away goals calmed nerves, and in Melikson
Wisla have a player to treasure.
The Israeli scored the first after a smart onetwo with Malecki, spanking the ball past the
helpless Lovech keeper. Early in the second
half Melikson struck again, beating a defender
to the ball and racing clear. The Lovech keeper
got the ball first, but upended Melikson and
the referee bought it. Melikson’s penalty
was quite something – a bewildering run up
leaving the keeper flat-footed.
Lovech pulled a goal back after 68
minutes, a free-kick pinging around
the Wisla area till it landed in front of
Bodurov, who slotted home. But soon after
the visitors were reduced to ten men, and
Wilk’s 84 minute goal wrapped things up.
Elsewhere, Poland’s European quest
continued with Slask Wroclaw and
Legia Warszawa completing ties against
Gazientepspor of Turkey and Lokomotiv
Sofia of Bulgaria. Legia made it through to
the next round with a 0-0 draw at home to
the Turkish side.
Holding the advantage in the tie,
following their away win last week, Legia
played a risky game, defending till the
final whistle. It almost backfired, when
the Turks missed a glorious chance in the
dying seconds, but 0-0 was enough.
Meanwhile, Slask were in the Bulgarian
capital following the draw in Wroclaw last
week. The match was far more open than
the first tie, with Slask creating the clearer
opportunities. But after 90 minutes, the
match was still deadlocked.
In extra time Sofia had good chances, but
Slask went even closer and had a shot cleared
off the line with the keeper beaten. In the end, it
came down to penalties with Wroclaw getting
the result they deserved, the excellent Kelemen
saving two shots to send the Poles through and
complete a victorious week in Europe.
Wisla Krakow will face Apoel Nicosia in
the final eliminating round of the Champions
League, while in the Europa League Legia face
Spartak Moscow and Slask Rapid Bucharest.
From Zakopane to Zakopane
T
he Tour de Pologne reaches its climax this Saturday after spending
the last week winding its way from
Warsaw down to the Tatras. The current
leader in the general classification is Peter
Sagan, following Thursday’s stage which
covered 200km in four loops around Zakopane. The real killer stage, though, is on
Friday, taking in the mountains around
Bukowina Tatrzanska, which will probably
decide the winner.
The main focus of interest on Thursday’s
stage was in points for the top climber, with
the specialists going away on the uphill
sections, but being reeled in by the peloton
before a real breakaway could be established.
With 5km to go, the peloton was all together
and so the stage came down to the sprint
finish. Roman Feillu tried to get away with
500m to go, but Sagan came roaring back at
him, overtaking the Frenchman with 50m to
go and completing an ultimately easy win.

Piszczek banned till February
Poland’s right back, and star of the Bundesliga,
Lukasz Piszczek has been banned from playing for the
national side for six months following his conviction
several months ago for involvement in a match-fixing
scandal. Piszczek decided to accept the verdict, rather
than appeal and face it being extended even further.
The ban is a major blow to Franciszek Smuda as he
attempts to prepare for Euro 2012.
The ban goes back to a game between Zaglebie (at
the time managed by Smuda) and Cracovia in 2006
which the players agreed to play for a draw as it
benefited Cracovia. Piszczek was a junior member of
the squad and didn’t play in the game itself, but he did
take the money on offer.
This leaves Smuda’s first choice back line reading as
follows: Piszczek, suspended for 6 months, Arboleda,
no passport, Perquis, no passport and Boenisch, out
injured for almost a year.
It’s England!
Poland drew England in their World cup qualifying group for
Brazil 2014 in Zurich last Saturday. For those of a superstitious
nature, it can be observed that England failed to qualify for
the World Cup in 1974 (at the hands of the Poles) and in
1994 (twenty years later), and so in 2014...
Those of a more statistical bent will rely on the fact that
Poland have won only once in eleven meetings with
England, losing seven.
Ex-Poland international Marek Citko, scorer of a goal at
Wembley in 1996, has already weighed in with the opinion
that, “England only has one world class player these days,
and that’s Rooney. Lampard and Gerrard are past it.”
