Don’t do it! Don’t go on the monkey bars if you can not reach the first bar. The aims included…. ∗ To develop the children’s social and play skills ∗ To enhance levels of physical activity ∗ To encourage healthier lifestyles ∗ To make good use of the school grounds ∗ ∗ ∗ ∗ Throughout the past few years we have consulted with the children, Play Leaders, School Council, staff and parents to review and develop the good practice. With all their contributions we aim to continue to improve the quality of play within the school. Part of the outside provision includes the Large Apparatus in the large playground area. We know how much the children enjoy using the apparatus and we know the health benefits for the children from using such equipment. We would like to share some health and safety information with you regarding the safe use of the equipment. The teaching staff and Play Leaders aim to ensure the safety of the children during the school day and during lunchtime. However, we also know how much the children enjoy using it after school. During these times we look to you, the parents for support and advocate that you monitor the use of the equipment by your child with the safety rules in mind. ∗ ∗ Do it! Children are not allowed to be lifted to reach any of the equipment by adults or other children . Chin up Bars - A maximum of two children are only allowed to use the bars at one time. They are only to be used for chin-ups, not climbing on top of. Children are to only use the bars if they can safely reach. Monkey Bars – One child can only use the bars at one time, the children queue from the large playground side, no children are allowed to run through or under the bars while they are in use. Camouflage Net, Bridge & Walking bars A maximum of four children can only use the pieces of equipment at one time. Children must be supervised by an adult on the play equipment at all times No ball games or tag games can be played in the area. NO RUNNING Do swing across with both hands and arms. Do grip with both hands and feet on the starting bar before swinging ‘Top Five Tips’ For using the Monkey Bars Safely 1. The child must be tall enough to play on the monkey bars - they must be able reach and grip the first monkey bar tightly whilst standing on the starting bar. 2. The children must use the bars for swinging across to the end using hand and arm strength - they must not hang upside down. 3. Only one child must use the bars at one time. 4. Children must queue from the playground side to use the equipment. 5. Children must use both hands to move across the monkey bars (not to hang one handed during the crossing). Do step on the last bar before getting off. Do have only two people doing chin-ups at one time.
