Inspired by our patron
Francis of Assisi, we seek to

who hunger for human dignity,
and extending Hospitality to all.

As we enter Holy Week, we encourage you to check the
Holy Week schedule, beginning with Holy Thursday and
continuing through Easter Sunday. These are days of
great power, as we follow Jesus from the evening of his
Last Supper, through his trial and way of the cross, to
the mystery and wonder of the empty tomb. Please be
aware that on Easter Sunday our mass times have been slightly altered.
Check the bulletin and website for full information.
We are drawing close to the end of our 2016 Bishop’s Annual Appeal,
and you can check our progress in the chart below. Last Sunday was
―BAA Sunday,‖ in which pastors call in to the bishop to report each
parish’s progress. We are doing well here at St. Francis, with still a ways
to go to meet our goal. In the coming weeks we’ll have opportunities to
fill out a pledge card for those who have not yet done that. Below are
some words from Trevor Thompson, Director of Pastoral Ministries, on
how St. Francis is connected with the Diocese of Raleigh. Again, if you
have already pledged, we thank you. If not, please consider making
a pledge to this year’s BAA.
―One of the ministries of Catholic Charities supported through the
Bishop's Annual Appeal is Oak City Outreach Center in downtown
Raleigh. OCOC is a place of hospitality for homeless men and
women where they can gather on the weekends to receive warm
meals and fellowship. Often serving as many as 200 people a meal,
this is the only place in Raleigh where one could find a free warm
meal during the weekend.
Catholic Charities has been a leader in emergency food aid in
Wake County through Catholic Parish Outreach Food Pantry, which
provides a week’s worth of groceries to an average of 11,000 per
month. Catholic Charities also has been serving people experiencing homelessness since 2005 through the Support Circle Program
for Homeless Families. With these important ministries and a number of others, including Oak City Outreach Center, Catholic Charities provides services to over 50,000 individuals in Wake County.
Many of our parishioners have served food at OCOC, packed
grocery bags at CPO, and accompanied homeless families with
the Support Circle Program. All of this is possible because of your
generous support of our Bishop's Annual Appeal. Thank you!‖

The Catholic Community of St. Francis of Assisi Celebrates the Jubilee Year
O
ver 100 people participated in our weekly faith
sharing and book discussion series this Lent! Through
prayer, music, talks, and small
group faith sharing, themes of
mercy, forgiveness, kinship,
community, and others were
broken open. Thank you to
everyone who took part, and
especially to our Adult Formation
Team; Becky Cawley, Jenn Fiduccia, Tricia Henry,
Jason Lillis, Kathleen Owen, Mary Lacy Simmons,
Trevor Thompson, and Jim Wahl, for putting
together this wonderful experience. Keep an eye
out for more small group opportunities coming soon!
MISSION: MERCY for
High School Youth
F
A High School Immersion Experience
June 27 – July 1 (overnight)
ollowing our Franciscan tradition of service
and love of our neighbors, teens will have
the opportunity to take part in daily service
projects, meaningful prayer experiences, and small
group reflection and sharing. This weeklong experience will include young adult witnesses, working
side by side with those who face daily challenges,
personal and shared prayer and reflection, creative
practices and processing, and fun and free time with
their peers. Our hope is that teens will grow in
mercy, compassion and love while discovering how
vital they are to the future of our church, and that
they will be empowered to embrace their relationship
with Jesus and live as disciples.
THANK YOU to all who donated clothing,
blankets, books, food, cards, and other items
during our Lenten almsgiving collections.
Your generosity will help thousands in
Wake County in the coming weeks!
Live Mercy
Sheltering the Homeless with us
through WIHN
In
Wake County there are many
families facing homelessness and
thus struggling, on a daily basis,
to even survive. Through our partnership with
Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN),
St. Francis will shelter four of these families
beginning Easter Sunday Mar 27 – April 3.
Help is needed while they are with us. Would
you please bring a meal, help with childcare
or transportation, or be an overnight guest?
You can bring the whole family! Remember
that just your physical presence and
willingness to enter into their life for even
this small period of time, says to that person:
―You matter… you are worthy, and of value,
and deserving of dignity and my time.‖
What a beautiful message for all of us to hear.
There will be representatives in the Stewardship Center after all the masses to answer
questions and sign you up. Or contact
Ron Smith at [email protected]
or call 919-455-7786.
Cost: $150 until March 11; $200 March 12 – April 5
Registration Deadline: April 5

Dorothy Day and granddaughter Martha Hennessy, May 1972
Dorothy Day: A Radical Discipleship of Mercy
April 8, 700-8:30pm, Anthony Hall Founder’s Room
P
ope Francis singled out four ―great
Americans‖ during his speech to
Congress last fall. One of these
was Dorothy Day. Dorothy Day was
a journalist in the early 20th century whose
conversion propelled her to found the Catholic
Worker movement and advocate for the poor.
Her commitment to the Church and her
teachings, the corporeal works of mercy, and
a life of peacemaking is, as Pope Francis
suggested, a radical discipleship of mercy,
and a cause for sainthood.
On April 8, we have a very special opportunity
to hear about this radical disciple of mercy
Dorothy Day from one of Day’s grandchildren
– Martha Hennessy. Martha will share with
us stories of Dorothy Day and the Catholic
Worker movement, and what this radical
discipleship of mercy might look like today.
In this Year of Mercy, we are praying that the
Lord might make us His mercy in the world.
Come and be inspired and challenged by
the example of Dorothy Day.
“It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the
Christian people may reflect on the corporeal and
spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken
our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of
poverty. And let us enter more deeply into the heart of
the Gospel where the poor have a special experience
of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these works of
mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether
or not we are living as his disciples.” Pope Francis
Martha Hennessy, seventh grandchild of Dorothy Day
divides her time between family in Vermont and work
at Maryhouse Catholic Worker. Martha is a retired occupational therapist, and grandmother of seven. She is committed to carrying on the spiritual and social justice legacy
of Dorothy Day. In that vein, she has been imprisoned
protesting war and nuclear power/weapons, the use of
drones, and the torture of prisoners in Guantanamo. She
has traveled to Russia, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan,
and Palestine to understand the effects of war on other
peoples. Martha travels and speaks on the topics of life
and work in community, Catholic Social Teaching, the life
of Dorothy Day, and peacemaking efforts in the tradition
of the Catholic Worker movement.

What a blessing!
Prayer Stations for Lent
I
n our preschool we get to have the unique experience of visits from the Friars. Fr. Steve Kluge
often stops by the playground on his way back
from daily Mass at the chapel; Fr. David has been
a guest reader; and Fr. Steve Patti, our pastor has made
it a practice to visit our preschool classrooms several
times a month to get to know the children better.
Recently, the Discovery Friends experienced one of
these magical visits. When Fr. Steve arrived, he posed
a question to students. He asked, ―What is a Discovery
Friend?‖ To which this class of sixteen four-year-olds
replied, ―We discover things!‖
This particular day, fossils were on the list of the things
to discover, so Fr. Steve stepped right in and helped
explain what a fossil is and how old they could be. He
even shared some of his own experiences with fossils.
The most exciting part was that this conversation about
fossils blossomed into the subject of Lent and Jesus.
At our preschool we encourage Higher Level Thinking in
our classrooms. The children use what they know and
what they have been told and expand their knowledge
by asking questions. The Discovery Friends, according
to Fr. Steve really lived up to their name as they asked
the question, ―Why did Jesus die?‖ Fr. Steve answered,
―Because God loves us so much!‖ One child then asked
―Who did he die for?‖ to which Fr. Steve replied, ―For all
of us!‖ What a perfect Easter message with which to
end the lesson!
We, at the preschool, feel so blessed to have the
presence of all of our wonderful friars in our classrooms,
on our playgrounds and at our events. Thank you
Fr. Steve P., Fr. Steve K and Fr. David for all you
do for our school!

S
tudents in Ms. Canning’s religion class created
prayer stations during the Lenten Season that
they shared with students who visited their
classes. The goal of the stations was to help
them and those who visited their stations, grow in their
faith, and draw closer to God. Each team of students
selected projects that were meaningful to them.
The prayer stations included:
Prayer for the World — a world map where visitors
could write prayer requests on popsicle sticks to place
on the area of the world they wished to pray for.
Prayer Knots — where visitors identified worries in their
lives, then tied a knot in a string, thought about how to
solve the worry, then untied the knot.
Growing Closer to God through Play Doh — the visitor
shaped out of Play Doh the thing in their life that was
taking them away from God. When finished, they
smashed it and prayed that God would come into their life.
Plant a Seed — visitors plant a seed and over time they
can watch it grow like their faith.

Welcome to Palm Sunday!
J
esus arrived into the
city riding on a donkey
while the crowds
praised his entrance
by scattering palm branches
before him and shouting
―Hosanna.‖ The crowd was
celebrating Jesus’ arrival as
a victorious Prince of Peace.
Each year, I am struck on this
Palm Sunday weekend by the
crowds. I am in awe about
crowd mentality. When I think
about large crowds, some of
my first memories were in my
college days. Moving from the
cornfields of Illinois to the delta of Mississippi, I quickly learned
the ropes at the collegiate level during the Ole Miss Football
games with a pure display of Southern crowds. From the ―Hotty
Toddy‖, the Wave, Grove tailgating, and Southern hospitality
abound, I conformed to the crowd.
Crowds can be scary too. How about that first concert crowd?
You know that feeling of herding cattle as you move through the
turnstile. You can’t move in the direction you want. If the crowd
was moving one way …so were you. I wonder when those large
crowds turn to destructive mobs. I wonder when the individuals
lose their sense of self-awareness and catch a mob mentality.
The crowds in Jerusalem would have been interesting, perhaps
even scary, to be part of as well. You see, these same crowds
had just laid down palm branches to celebrate Him. These same
people would, in the next few days, would cry out for His death.
They became a mob in a week.
Have you heard that crowd of noise in your life? Do we join the
crowd or step out of the crowd and take a stand for what we know
is true? Do you lead the crowd or do you follow in the crowd?
What do you think about a good crowd? Think of the good that
crowds can accomplish … benefit concerts or sporting events,
walks/runs, protests, radioathons, sit-ins, or rallies. When people
work together for a good cause for the same movement, good
does become the movement.
We should brace ourselves for the crowds this week. Let’s go
with the movement and be a good crowd of people. Let Jesus
draw your closer this season through the crowd. I would love
to see everyone that is here today bring a friend to one of our
celebrations this week. Each of us who are followers of Jesus
should lead two or more people to Jesus. I would love to see
these buildings filled with crowds every day as we will be filled
on Easter Sunday. Let’s be a crowd.

Band of Sisters
Mary the Untier of Knots
In the 1980’s, prior to Pope Francis
becoming the leader of the Catholic
Church, he picked up a postcard from
a German Chapel of a painting of Mary
entitled Wallfahrtsbild. Since then, he
has had a special devotion to Mary the
Untier of Knots. The Band of Sisters
invites you on Tuesday, May 10 to
Avila Retreat Center in Durham from
9:30am to 2:30pm, where Joan
Rose, Minister of Faith Formation at
Our Lady of Lourdes Parish will lead
prayer and reflection on Mary the Untier of Knots. The $40 registration fee
includes lunch and all materials. Seats
are limited, so please register today
at tinyurl.com/maryuntier. If you need
further information, please email

Young Adults Trip to St. Francis Inn
Join other young adults on a trip to
Philadelphia to volunteer at St. Francis
Inn, a setting for volunteers to grow in
faith, love, and hope by serving the poor
and working for social justice. Based on
the Gospel message to express love in
action, it provides an environment that
fosters service to the marginalized, personal and interpersonal development,
spiritual growth, and an active prayer life.
Join us for an information meeting about
this trip on Sunday, March 6, at 4:30pm
in the Anthony Hall Conference Room.
