LGCGreat British Bake Off!
Last week Let’s Get Cooking held its end of term
event. They were asked to
‘bake a showstopper cake’
and boy did they deliver!
Mrs Crump said “It was
defnitely the best Bake
Off we have ever had! The
competition was so tough
because the students
worked incredibly hard
to make such fabulous
cakes!” The competition
involved designing a
British Bake Off book,
baking a showstopper
cake and to show up
dressed in something
British! Prizes were given
to the winners at the end
of the challenge and Mr
Davidson and Mr Sharpe
came to help judge the
winners. The event was so
well supported with a full
room of
parents, brothers and sisters and grandmas!
A wonderful event full of
wonderful students!

Is it a bird?
On Tuesday, the air cadets were given an amazing opportunity to take part in a flying day from RAF Culdrose. We stood outside to watch our cadet students
flying overhead as part of their training! We only managed to catch a glimpse as
they flew off into the distance but we have to say they was flying very well and they
landed safely! The cadets club are constantly broadening their horizons with the
continous opportunities given to them.

Penair Students Win ‘Be The Change’ Award

A BIG congratulations to our students who won the ‘Be The Change School’s award 2016’ at the Eden Project
on 21st March! Fifteen of our students had to come up with their own anti-litter campaign and pitch their idea
to an audience up against many other schools. The students have been given £500 towards their own anti-litter
initiative which they are already eagerly planning along with this rather beautiful award! So proud!
Johnny Wins an iPad mini for 100% Attendance
We are continuing to recognise the efforts that parents are making in order for their children to attend school as much as possible, and to at least reach the minimum school target of 95.2%.
At the end of the autumn term 2015 161 pupils had managed to
achieve 100% attendance for the term. As of Friday 18 March
there were 121 pupils who had achieved 100% attendance. With
the kind support of our Association of Parents and Friends of
Penair School (APFPS), they have donated an iPad mini to Johnny
Ivall (Year 7) who had his name randomly chosen during the Full
School Assembly as one of the 121 pupils who have 100% attendance. Congratulations to Johnny and to all pupils who have
continued to have such high attendance rates. All pupils who have
100% attendance will be receiving a certificate to recognise this
achievement and there were also 630 pupils who have an
attendance over 95.2%.
Easter Hamper Winner!
The winner of the APFPS Easter hamper was Mrs Libby, mother of
Robert in Year 9. She is about to takes home a nice hamper of
chocolate goodies for the Easter vacation in this picture!

Part of the Bronze art award, Year 9 students led a workshop to teach a skill that they had learnt
previously during their Falmouth gallery experience.
GSUS stops off at Penair!
During the last week of term the GSUS live bus was on
site offering our students the opportunity to investigate
the themes of forgiveness, rejection and fear. The bus is
an interactive experience and makes use of the mediums of music, film the bible and a moral dilemma to
engage students with the themes. By the end of the session students have to give advice to the character they
have looked at, followed by a discussion of the decisions made with the youth workers from Kea Church,
Sarah Thrift and Rich Powell. The program was delivered to years 7, 8 and 9 as well as to key stage 4 GCSE
students. The bus travels the country and whilst it has
visited Cornwall before, it has never been at Penair.
This was a fantastic opportunity for our students who
really enjoyed experience. Our thanks go to Sarah and

Sports Update!
Congratulations to James Tucker, Archie Sutton, Connor Ellery, Sam Hitchins and Kyle Wardle who
won the County Rugby Cup with the Truro U16 rugby team for the fourth consecutive year!
Sports Relief Activities!
Throughout the week of the 14th to the 18th March
students from Penair school took part in a range of events
for Sport Relief 2016. Students competed in their school
house teams starting with a different year playing in each
day, starting with the year 7’s on the Monday and
concluding with year 11’s on the Friday. Events included
benchball, basketball, badminton, dodgeball and football
with students paying a £1 donation to Sports Relief to
enter into a team. Spectators were also welcome for a small
donation and students from the school council and year 10
sports leaders were on hand to help collect donations, sell
sport relief wrist bands and officiate games.
The week was a huge success with students raising £120.49
in total. (This is the figure as of Friday 18th. More money
may trickle in!)

Continued Improvements in attendance at Penair for the spring term!
At the end of the end of the autumn term 2015 I was able to report some very good news to you in that
following our OFSTED inspection from June 2015 where attendance was deemed to require improvement, with your support and through the hard work of staff at school we have continued to make considerable improvements in our whole school attendance and that for Pupil Premium children. Once
again, in order to keep you fully informed about your child’s attendance we arranged for a letter to be
sent to the parent of every child at the end of the autumn term to give you some feedback about the
link between your child’s attendance and progress as there is considerable research to that effect. This
has been repeated for the spring term 2016.
At this time last year the percentage attendance for the whole school was 93.51% and that for children
who are deemed ‘Pupil Premium’ was at 88.73%. We continue to be pleased to be able to inform you
that from the start of term in September 2015 until 18 March 2016 the attendance for the whole school
was 95.28% and that for Pupil Premium was 91.77%. This has been graphically represented below.
There continues to be clear improvements of which we are proud and grateful for your continuing
support.
By way of advance warning you will be receiving a template letter that is generated solely on the attendance data for your child for the year to-date. Where there may be specific circumstances regarding
the attendance of your child being below the school target of 95.2% it is highly likely that we are aware
of the details following communications between parents and either the relevant Pastoral Support
Worker and the Director of Learning. The details in the letters follow DFE guidelines. We will also be
sharing some details with you and your children about ‘Encouraging good attendance at Penair’ and
these will appear on the reverse side of their termly assessments.
Once again, without your help we would not have been able to achieve these impressive results on our
own and we are grateful to you all for helping us to get to this position and we know that we can still
improve. The Local Authority supports all schools in the drive to help improve attendance and I previously drew your attention to one of their publications on this matter:

Cornish Summer Camp
Cornish Summer Camp Opportunity For Young People aged 13-16
A fun packed 10 day residential programme planned for July
I am delighted to be able to support this opportunity for young people aged between 13 and 16
to join with their counterparts from Brittany to take part in a Cornish Summer Camp running
at Tehidy Park from 14 to 23 July. The visits and activities will help young people learn about
the culture and history of Cornwall and Brittany and share exciting experiences such as forest
schools, local food, campfire evenings, coastal walks and more.
There will be a selection/preparation afternoon on 9 April, details of which will be sent out on
receipt of the application form signed by the young person’s parent or carer.
