SOLD OUT! - Royal Scottish Country Dance Society
v o l u m e 5 2 n u m b e r 1 s e p t / o c t o b e r 2 0 1 5 From the Chair by Don MacQueen, Branch Chair Youth Workshop! by Annie Rodier and Kristi Closser Summer is a slow time for the Branch Committee; we don‘t meet in July or August, so there‘s not much to report. But there is some. Sadly, our membership numbers dropped a little below 300 this year. This is unfortunate in its own right, of course, but it also means we get six votes instead of seven at the November Society AGM. Speaking of that AGM, we, that is the SF Branch, devised the Friday night program for the AGM — the program is included elsewhere in this issue. Interestingly, they prefer a program of two 10-dance sets instead of three sets of 5 to 7 dances, as we tend to prefer. Also included in this issue is a nice letter from Senator Barbara Boxer congratulating us on our 50th anniversary. And once again, much thanks to all the volunteers that make this Branch run! From all the organizers of the Santa Rosa Youth Workshop and Ball: thank you to everyone who came and supported (what we hope to be) the first annual event! The vigor and excitement of talented young dancers paired with live music and inspiring teaching. A group of 18 dancers converged in Santa Rosa from all over the Bay Area for workshops taught by Mary McQuilliams and Bruce Herbold. Jigs, reels and strathspeys challenged the feet and brains of the dancers in the ―Snoopy‖ and ―Woodstock‖ classes. In one of the classes Mary taught Mr. Gary Thomas, a great strathspey written by Dwayne McQuilliams, with a ―petronella and rotate‖ figure new to everyone in the room. Bruce later taught a couple of medleys, including the legendary Dancing on Parnassus by Tim Wilson. SOLD OUT! Asilomar Weekend 2015 Dancer Places Completely Filled by Charlotte Greig for Asilomar Weekend 2015 We continue to take applications & registrations from those who do not wish to dance along with applications from dancers who wish to be put on our Wait List. Dancers who have already applied, and paid their $75.00 deposit, or who have contacted Registrar, Julee Montes by email before 3:00 pm Thursday, August 6, 2015 have an Asilomar dancer place reserved for them. The Registration PDF Link went out by email in late July. Applicants should complete and return their registration forms by mail, or may scan them & email a pdf copy to Registrar, Julee Montes by Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Payment in full is due August 18th, 2015. Sometimes applicants drop out for a variety of reasons, and we will endeavor to fill their place with those on our Wait List. If you're a Dancer, and wish to be put on this list, we'll add you in the order in which we receive your Application and Deposit Check. You'll be contacted before your deposit check is cashed to verify that you are still able and want to attend. Deposit checks will be shredded or returned if you are not accepted to attend the Weekend. More details such as application, registration, and merchandise information are all online at asilomar.rscds-sf.org Following the workshops, a number of RSCDS – San Francisco Branch members braved the trip north and joined the youth for an afternoon tea-dance, which included favorites such as 1314, Hamilton Rant, and the Bees of Maggieknockater. The final dance on the program, Reel of the 51st division, coupled with Ron Wallace's spectacular piping, left everyone wishing for more. Thus, the traditional (for the SF branch youth) version of Petronella finished off the day. At one point a class musician pointed out, ―I‘m very impressed; these dancers have an incredible amount of finesse.‖ The combination of great music and dancing made the event memorable for all who participated. We hope that future youth workshops and dances, along with the support of others, will continue the tradition of Scottish Country Dancing and music in the Bay Area! New Dance Book from the International Branch The International Branch released a book of dances this spring. This book, entitled World Wide Weavings, contains fifteen dances written by IB members from all over the world. The dances in this book are the result of an invitation sent to all branch members in September 2013 to submit dances, devised by themselves or other branch members, for inclusion into a book to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the formation of the Branch, which took place in 2004. Many more dances were submitted than could be published in a single collection, so the dances were distributed amongst several groups who tried them out and ranked them, and the rankings were all combined in order to select the dances that appear in this collection. They amply demonstrate the ingenuity and enthusiasm of the membership of the Branch. The book is available on Lulu (http:www.lulu.com) in either electronic or paperback format.. The e-book version costs £3;. the paperback version costs £5. Postage is charged at domestic rates if there is a Lulu print shop in the country where the order is placed. Lulu has ‗bookshops‘ for: USA, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Canada, Australia, Ireland and Switzerland. Photo from Hawaii Branch Website All proceeds from the sales of this book go to the Susi Mayr Fund, which was formed by the International Branch to give support to any dance group or individual in furthering the enjoyment and appreciation of Scottish Country Dancing and its music by any suitable means. 5 R E E L & S T R A T H S P E Y P E R • R S C D S • S A N F R A N C I S C O B R A N C H House Concert to Benefit the Asilomar Weekend Join the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a & Strathspey Society Band for a Reunion Concert/Fundraiser/ Party on Sunday, October 4, 2015, from 1 to 4 pm.
