The arena of sports has also been influenced by these milestones and accomplishments. In tribute to the ladies of sports, who leave it all out there on the court, field, ring, track or mat, we highlight and celebrate a few stars that shine in the Milky Way of our much loved sports universe. They are daughters, sisters, wives, mothers, aunts, role models, mentors, authors, volunteers and just inspiring and phenomenal women. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee and she’s all woman. Laila Ali, more than a pretty face and the daughter of the beloved and famed Mohamed Ali, set the boxing world a blaze and a chattering. This five foot 10 inch boxer with a 70.4 inch reach caught the eye of boxing fans when she won eight fights in a row. Many fans wanted to see her face the daughter of George Foreman, Freeda Foreman or the daughter of Joe Frazier, Jackie FrazierLyde. Well destiny was met on June 8, 2001. The match was dubbed the Ali/Frazier IV in reference to their fathers’ famous fight trilogy. Laila and Jackie’s match made payfor-view history. It was the first pay-for-view match between two Black women. Ali’s boxing record to date stands at 24 wins in 24 matches. She had 21 wins by knockouts. That’s right, no losses! Laila was named by the International Boxing Association, the Women’s Association and the International Woman’s Boxing Federation as a Super Middleweight Champion. Currently, she was just named as the Women’s Sports Foundation incoming president. She will serve a twoyear term as an official spokesperson, and will help shape strategic direction and development initiatives for the organization. The Women’s Sports Foundation is a national charitable educational organization dedicated to advancing the lives of girls and women through physical activity. Balancing work and home life, Laila and her husband Curtis Conway, a former National Football League (NFL) wide receiver, have their hands full with their four children (he has three from a previous marriage), and they are expecting their second together. Who knows maybe there’s a third generation boxer in the making? Laila Ali To Serve With Love - Colorful and noisy beads bobbing on plaited braids turn the stately and quiet tennis world on its ear in 1994, when Venus Ebony Starr Williams turned professional. Long gone are the innocent giggles of yesteryear replaced by the hard hitting serves, feverish scramble of intense court running hustle and great tennis play. Venus and Serna, while recently plagued by or fighting off injury, have certainly made their mark in the who’s who of tennis. Venus was first ranked World number one in singles on February 25, 2002, becoming the first African-American to achieve that rank in the open era; which began in 1968. Since 2002, Venus has been ranked World number one in singles on two additional occasions by the Women’s Tennis Association. She is currently the reigning champion in women’s doubles at the French Open. 4 BSTM She has 21 Grand Slam wins on her resume. This accomplishment is more that any active women’s tennis player other than her younger sister Serena. She has won seven Grand Slams in singles, twelve in women’s doubles, and two in mixed doubles. Additionally, during that time, she won two Gold Medals in singles and doubles in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She again won a Gold Medal in the 2008 Olympics in doubles. Students that do graduate are having a more difficult time finding universities they can afford—and where their culture is appreciated. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have served the social, cultural and educational needs of America’s young men and women for the last 170 years. Their rich traditions and academic excellence have produced thousands of leaders in the fields of business, medicine, politics, law and sports. Yet, many students across the United States are unaware of the significance and relevance of these great institutions. That’s why Black Educational Events has created HBCU Today, a comprehensive guide to our nation’s HBCUs. HBCUs are producing the highest number of AfricanAmerican Ph.D.s per capita and, according to Grambling University President Horace Judson, at a time when the United States is falling behind China and India in producing engineers and scientists, universities like Grambling have tailor-made their missions to be on the international stage. Quality HBCU educational experiences are found not just in large, well-endowed private schools like Howard, Hampton or Tuskegee. From North Carolina A&T to Grambling State University, there are strong HBCUs across the country. Many of these state schools were created as “land grant” institutions after the Civil War to educate freed slaves. Today, although their missions have broadened, schools like Florida A&M, Prairie View A&M, Jackson State, Texas Southern University, and Alabama State University still carry the proud HBCU name and traditions. o Detailed profiles of all 104 HBCUs, including full-color campus photos and up-to-date contact information o A full listing of scholarship resources and black college tours o Over 300 hundred pages of information, including notable HBCU graduates and HBCU trivia o The glaring reality is that without the role and function of HBCUs, the landscape of America would be quite different. Had it not been for the desire of Heman Marion Sweat and a rejection letter from the University of Texas Law School, there would not have been a Texas Southern Law School. Had there not been a Dr. Benjamin Mays at Morehouse, there might not have been a Martin Luther King, Jr. Our nation’s 104 HBCUs are having an impact beyond just educating young people—they are having a tremendous economic impact on the communities in which they are located. That’s why HBCU Today is committed to spreading the awareness of these great colleges and universities to minorities across the country. Overviews of programs offered at HBCUs, including Florida A&M University’s School of Journalism and Howard University’s School of Divinity o A step-by-step guide to applying for college o Articles on the history and relevance of HBCUs from award-winning Washington Post writer Hamil Harris and former USA Today sportswriter Michael Hurd o A geographic HBCU locater for quick and easy reference o Full-color reproductions of artwork from The Kinsey Collection, one of the most notable collections of African-American art For more information on HBCU Today and how to purchase, go to www.HBCUToday.net ST.
