Summerville 4 5 STEPHANIE RENEE EMERY--Stephanie, the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Henry Eniery, is 17 years old. She is a senior at Urbana High School where she participates in the UHS choir and girls' volleyball. She is president of the youth choir at Morning Star Freewill Baptist Church where she is a member. Stephanie would like to attend Prairie View A & M College in Prairie View, Texas, where she will pursue studies in either engineering or pre-law. Mr. Darrell Wesley is escorting Stephanie and her father is presenting her. LOURIE ANN EPPS--A 17 year old senior at Urbana High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson V. Epps. Lourie is extremely active in the C-U community as a participant through Douglass Center's women's softball league, senior citizens' dinner program, annual talent and fashion shows and Miss Douglass Center Pageant. At UHS she is on the Student Senate, president of the Black Student Association and served as the BSA's Homecoming Queen. Lourie is a member of Pilgrim Baptist Church and its Pastor's Ensemble choir. She will study home economics next year at Illinois State University. Lourie is being presented by her father and escorted by Mr. Calvin Barksdale. FRANCES DENISE GRAHAM--Frances is the 17 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Kizer, Sr. Frances is very active as a senior at Centennial High School. She is a member of Interserve, the Afro-American Club and a senior leader for physical education. Frances is the advertising manager for the Centinal newspaper and works at Bishops Buffet. She has given her time and efforts to the University of Illinois through their special olympics program. Frances will attend Belleville (IL) Community College and maj or in Engl.ish education. Her father is presenting her and Mr. Columbus McDaniel is her escort. BELINDA GAIL McCLELLAN--Belinda, 17, is the daughter of Mrs. Evelyn McClellan. Belinda is a Central High School senior. A former Pepette at Central, she is now a member of the Future Secretaries Association. Belinda works at both Carousel Hot Dogs and Wag's Restaurants. Belinda will attend Illinois State University and major in social work. She is being presented by Mr. Arthur Johnson, Sr., and her escort is Mr. Greg Ash. 6 7 c PAMELA LEE PIRTLE--Pamela, 17 years old, is a senior at Centennial High School. Pam is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pirtle. She is an avid music enthusiast and sings at Centennial in the A Capella and Chamber Choirs, the Madrigals and the girls' barbershop group. She is a member of St. Luke C.M.E. Church, where she sings and is assistant to the director of the Young Adult Choir and director of the Children's Choir. She has participated in the Illinois Summer Youth Music program and the Illinois State High School Music contests. Pam is also a member of the Business Club, Student Council and treasurer of the Afro-American Club at Centennial. At St. Luke she is secretary of the Sunday School. Pam would like to·enter the field of music education after receiving her degree from Illinois State University. She is being presented by her father and her brother, ~' is her escort. DEBRA L. MITCHELL--Debra, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Mitchell, is 17 years old. She is a senior at Urbana High Scho~l where she is a varsity cheerleader and a member of the Black Student Association. Debra works parttime at Market Place Cinema. She is decising between Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and the University of Houston (TX) as the place she will choose to study psychology/pre-law. Her father is presenting her and her escort is Mr. Tony Pelmore. NINA DENISE PATTERSON--Nina is 16 years old and the daughter of Mr. Willivry Patterson and Mrs. Fannie Patterson. A senior at Urbana High School, Nina is active in the Black Student Association, girls' basketball, the UHS choir, the Home Economics Occupation Club and on the staff of the Rosemary yearbook. She is a volunteer at the Frances Nelson Health Center and has worked with political campaigns. Nina enjoys sports, citing softball as a favorite. She wishes to enter North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro. Nina is being presented by her father and escorted by Mr. Eric Johnson. 8 KIMBERLY DENISE PITTMAN--Kim a senior at Central High School, is 17 years old. She is the daughter of Mr. Clarence J. Pittman of San Antonio, Texas, and Mrs. Jo Lynda Pittman. At Central she is a counseling guide and a member of the Chamber Choir and Afro-American Club. She volunteers her time to both the Empty Tomb and Salem Pre-School. Kim is a member of Salem Baptist Church where she is in the Youth Choir, works with Vacation Bible School and secretary to both the BTU and Sunday School. She works as a cashier part-time at McDonalds. Her hobbies include tennis, singing, roller skating, softball, volleyball and soccer. Kim plans a career in child psychology and plans' to attend Parkland College. Kim's escort is Mr. Charles Hassell, Jr. and Mr. Oscar Gipson is presenting her. 9 MELINDA NADER ROUNDTREE--Melinda is 17 years old and the daughter of Mr. D. W. Roundtree. She is a senior at Urbana High School where she is a member of the Future Secretaries Association. Melinda participates in sports through Douglass Center. LISA LAVERNE THORPE--An 18 year old senior at Urbana High School, Lisa is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Thorpe, Sr. Lisa has been a member of the UHS Black Student Association and their track and basketball teams for women. She has also participated in 4-H, Girl Scouts and park district softball. She has been active in local politics and cites roller skating and bowling as her hobbies. Lisa plans to attend Illinois State University and she will major in either secretarial science or recreation. Her father is presenting her and her brother, Edward, Jr., is her escort. MARIE VIRGINIA SCANTLEBURY--Marie, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scantlebury, is 16 years old. Marie is a Centennial High School senior. She is active at Centennial in Interserve, the Musical Pit Orchestra, VISTA, the Afro-American Club, the Pep Club and the Spanish and National Honor Societies. In the C-U community, she is involved with the Girl Scouts, National Academy of Arts, Job Ed Corps and Champaign County Youth Symphony. Gamma's purpose is to promote and encourage young ladies of highschool age to further their education at an institution of higher learning; be it· professional, technical, religious or vocational. Through this community service they aid in better citizenship, eivi.c pride, cultural enrichment and the development of character. PATRICK TYLER is a junior at Urbana High School. He is vice present of the junior class and president of the high school choir. He enjoys sports and board games. She resigned in 1979 to marry her Cotillion escort, Edward Thorpe, Jr. She and Edward moved to Texas as he was enlisted in the armed services. After a year and a half away they have recently returned to Champaign. SANDRA JEAN HERRON--Sandra graduated from the University of Illinois in 1979 lvith a Bachelor of Arts degree. She majored in political science with minors in sociology and economics. She relocated to Austin, Texas and is now working for the Texas State Comptroller's Department. Sandra would like to return to school to obtain a degree in law. GINA lL~NETTE JACKSON--Gina attended the University of Illinois until 1976 where she became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. In 1976 Gina joined the U.S. Army, completed her basic training in Maryland (was) was assigned to Germany. She was stationed there until April 1980 and made the rank of sergeant. Her next orders were for El Paso, Texas where she was stationed until recently. Gina is again in Maryland, this time receiving specialized training. KAREN JEAN HITE--Karen is presently employed as a secretary to the Director of Leisure Studies at the University of Illinois. She resides in Champaign. . She has also attended the University of Illinois and Parkland Colleze. In 1979 she married Tyrone Cook, her cotillion escort, and they reside in Urbana. Romona is employed as an Accountant I for the University of Illinois in accounts payable. She plans to attend Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas this fall for law school. KAREN YVETTE HILSON HAYES--Karen is a graduate of Illinois State University in Normal 1vith a B.S. in social work. She is employed with Unit School District #116 (Urbana) in their Adult Education Department. She is involved in retention services, assistine adults with their education. Karen married Conrad S. Hayes in 1980 and they reside in Urbana. HELONEE JOE BRADLEY--Melonee attended Parkland College until 1973 majorine in broadc~st communications. She received her FCC third Class Broadcasting License in 1978. Helonee resides in Champaign and has resumed her studies at Parkland, this time an electronics major. Her goal is to become an electrical engineer. She is now attending Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. Karin is' majoring in nutrition and will receive her bachelors degree in December. At OSU she has been placed on the Dean's Honor Roll for two of three semesters. In PHILLIPA NORHAN BENNIE OLIVER VICKIE LE1HS TRACYE MICHELE RAWLS--Tracye attended the University of Illinois until 1979. She is now residing in New Jersey, not far from the "Big Apple". She worked in New York City during the day while studying dance at night. This effort was eventually rewarded as Tracye received a scholarship to study with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. She aspires to become a choreographer. She was a member of the President's Scholars Program and received scholastic honors. In the academic years of 1978 and 1979 Charisse received certificates for Meritorious Achievement in Academics awarded by the Black Affairs Council. She received a scholarship from SIU-C for her internships at Burnham and Carle Hospitals. She attended Parkland College in 1979 and 1980 picking up a few courses and receiving a merit award for Outstanding Progress and Achievement. She was on the President's List at Parkland and she is listed in the current edition of "Host Outstanding Young Homen of America". Charisse is presently in Hashington, D.C. attending Howard University. She is the mother of one son and expects to receive her B.S. in physical therapy in 1982. RN10NA GAY SUGGS--Ramona is presently a senior in business administration at Illinois State University in Normal. She is a member at ISU of the Inter~ denominational Youth Choir and president of the Black Awareness & Action Committee of l<Tatterson Towers. In 1979 Ramona was selected as Miss Black ISU and she placed first in the 1980 Homecoming Talent Competition. Ramona eventually plans to receive an MBA with an emphasis in finance. ~HNETTE \JILLIS--Vlinette is completing her senior year at Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. She is majoring in speech pathology. At TSU she is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the Martial Arts Club, the Theatrical Players Guild and the National Student Speech & Hearing Association. She resides in Urbana and is employed at Commercial Bank as a customer service representative. The bank is involved in a tuition reimburseme: nt pr~gram, so Handa is now only three hours away from receiving her certiflcate ln banking. She is a musician and choir director at Mt. Olive Baptist Church. Wanda plans to conti~ue her career in banking and has goals to become a song writer and recording artist. BRENDA D. BENTON--Brenda is a sophomore at the University of Illinois as a biology/premedicine major. She is a member of the Alpha Angel Club and has served as a tutor in English, Math and Rhetoric for both the Upward Bound and Educational Opportunities Programs at the University of Illinois. Brenda is employed as a financial aid counselor. She plans to attend medical school after graduation.
