And so finally the centre piece of 2012 heaves into view and casts its ringed shadow over the city. The Olympics have been the focus of so much attention for the past six years it’s difficult to think of life without them, a bit like pregnancy, or Afghanistan. I have mixed feelings about it, not keen on the dictatorial nature and elitism of the organisation but don’t mind a bit of sport. At the club we assumed there would be a ‘great boon for British business’ so like the rest of the town we looked forward to liberating a few grand from the Coca Colas of this world, but to date we have had no ‘Olympic’ business at all. Indeed the only slice we were to enjoy, a party with Seb and the Prime Minister et al, was cancelled as there was a ‘brand conflict’. Yep that’s right, Ronnie Scott’s is officially too big a brand for the Olympics to handle. Paranoid? Anyway we expect to be busy by default so we are staging a series of classic jazz nights featuring the music of some of the greats played by the cream of the UK jazz scene, thereby dishing out a lot of work to UK jazz guys and gals, paid work I might add - take note LOCOG - and at the same time catering for what may end up being a heavily tourist crowd. We also expect to be very busy for the Late Late Shows, which might be interesting as that’s the only time of day we are allowed to get beer deliveries. (Got to keep the artery free between the Dorchester and the shoe shops). And before and after? Well as ever its musically brilliant, in July Average White Band have sold out already but you can still enjoy legends Pharaoh Sanders, Jimmy Cobb, Take 6, and Stanley Clarke with the Police’s Stewart Copeland as well as a very special evening with Al Jarreau. And after the sports? Roy Ayers, Booker T, Pee Wee Ellis and Seth MacFarlane all drop in so although it may seem as though it won’t, life will go on post ‘London 2012’, rather pleasantly here at the club. Footnote. We are saddened by the premature death of trumpeter and friend of the club Abram Wilson. It’s a plain tragedy.. A diamond among the jewels of Mandingo (West African) music, his music is a sublime demonstration of Africa’s ancient blues. Only his voice can blend Niger and Mississippi river alluvia with such moving authenticity. His unique, inimitable, self-taught guitar technique owes a great deal to his kora influences, but its shades and phrasing also suggest the great bluesmen of the deep American South: Blind Willie McTell, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and others. His latest album Mali Denhou Is out now - he is joined for these rare club dates by percussionist Losseni Kone and fabulous, harmonica player Vincent Bucher, whose playing is influenced by Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson. Superlative Cuban jazz violinist who has worked with the likes of Courtney Pine and Denys Baptiste. He appears here with pianist Al MacSween, bassist Darren Taylor, drummer Michel Castellan percussionist Oscar Martinez and trombonist Rene Alverez. Guitarist, harmonica player and singer Muntu Valdo opens the show. His music is rooted in the blues, mixing African traditions with striking modernity and technical mastery. SUN 8TH: (£20.00 - £28.50) facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 06 www.ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 07 July (cont) FRI13TH - SAT 14TH: MON 9TH: (SOLD OUT) SOLD OU T AVERAGE WHITE BAND (£20.00 - £35.00) URI CAINE Uri Caine (pno), John Hebert (bs), Clarence Penn (drs). Gifted, hugely inventive jazz and classical pianist and composer noted for his innovative use of electronics and for his acclaimed reworkings of Mahler and Bach. As well as leading his own acclaimed bands he has worked with the likes of Don Byron, Dave Douglas,. Sam Rivers and John Zorn. Alan Gorrie (bass/gtr/keys, MD), Onnie McIntyre (gtr/voc), Rocky Bryant (drs), Klyde Jones (Voc, keys, bs, gtr), Fred Vigdor (Sax, keys, voc). AWB are widely regarded as one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music. Though perhaps best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit 'Pick Up the Pieces' the band's strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song-writing, stretching across several gold selling albums and multi- grammy nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records. Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six piece took the influences of their R&B heroes - people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway and others - and developed their own 'authentic' sound which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the US and elsewhere. SUN 15TH: THURS 12TH: (2 shows per night / £50.00 - £70.00) TAKE 6 Ronnie Scott’s is honoured to be presenting this Multi-Grammy awardwinning vocal a cappella super group, drawing on gospel, doo wop and sophisticated jazz-influenced singing groups of mid-century America (such as the Hi-Los), Take 6 have toured with Al Jarreau, appeared with Quincy Jones and their 2008 jazz smash hit ‘The Standard’ featured Roy Hargrove, Jon Hendricks, and Al Jarreau. Used to playing venues many times larger, this is a very rare chance indeed to see a group of this stature in the intimate surroundings of Ronnie’s. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 08 (£20.00 - £28.50) NATALIE WILLIAMS SOUL FAMILY feat. special guest: SHAKKA SOUL! Blade is always searching for the balance that gives a song a personal story with an outward reaching resonance and his music is as inventive as his stellar drumming. WED 25TH: (£20.00 - £28.50) NYJO Justly revered as a glittering showcase for the country’s best young musicians, many of the current generation of top British jazz musicians have risen through its ranks, often becoming established jazz stars whilst still playing with the band. “This seedbed of young talent - the backbone of session-land - mix up classic swing with cutting-edge modern jazz arrangements with dazzling virtuosity” - Timeout www.ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 11 July (cont) THE RONNIE SCOTT’S CLASSIC JAZZ SERIES FRI 27th JULY - SUN 12th AUGUST In celebration of the London 2012 Olympics, Ronnie Scott’s presents its Classic Jazz Series of concerts Friday 27th July - Sunday 12th August THURS 26TH: (SOLD OUT) T SOLD OU AL JARREAU Al Jarreau (voc), Joe Turano (keys, sax, MD), John Calderon (gtr), Mark Simmons (drs), Chris Walker (bs), Larry Williams (keys). inclusive! Perhaps acid jazz would have emerged even if Roy Ayers had never existed, but it certainly would have sounded different. Scores of DJs, hip-hoppers, acid jazzers, and others have incorporated samples of music created by Ayers into their own work, making his sound an integral part of these emerging musical forms. His status as the godfather of acid jazz, or jazz funk, or whichever label you prefer, represents a second life in the career of vibraphonist and composer Ayers, who first rocked American dance floors in the 1970s with such anthems as “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” and “Freaky Deaky.” Twenty years later, Ayers is as ubiquitous in the dance clubs as he ever was. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 16 MON 20TH - TUES 21ST: (£20.00 - £35.00) WAYNE KRANTZ TRIO Wayne Krantz (gtr), Tim Lefebvre (bs), Nate Wood (drs). Legendary New York based-guitarist and ex-sideman with Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Michael Brecker, Chris Potter, Billy Cobham and many others, Wayne Krantz is a boldly inventive guitarist who in the words of the Guardian: “Joins the impact of a heavy rock power-trio to the harmonic sleight-of-hand and melodic slipperiness of a contemporary jazz band. Krantz is an unflinching adventurer who dislikes repeating himself or imitating others.” He appears here with a powerful trio featuring the brilliant bassist Tim Lefebvre and jazz and rock drummer Nate Wood. www.ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 17 August (cont) SAT 25TH: (£25.00 - £45.00) THE LAURENCE COTTLE BIG BAND: A Portrait Of Jaco WED 22ND - FRI 24TH: (£45.00 - £60.00) BOOKER T JONES Booker T Jones (org, gtr, voc), Darian Gray (drs, voc), Melvin Brannon Jr (bs, voc), Vernon Black (gtr, voc). Ranked in the 100 greatest songs of all time, the number one, millionselling smash Green Onions celebrates it’s very own jubilee this year - 50 years since the 12-bar blues with a rippling Hammond Organ line was recorded by Booker T & The MG’s for Stax. Booker T went on to become one of the architects of the unique Memphis soul sound and over the next decade, Booker T & the MG’s played on hundreds of recordings by artists such as Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and many others, alongside many other titles under their own name. 1971’s Melting Pot was the last Booker T & the MGs album, although as a producer, songwriter, arranger, and instrumentalist, Jones has gone on to work with a remarkable variety of artists, from Willie Nelson to John Lee Hooker, from Soul Asylum to the Roots, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, and Eric Clapton. Still a vociferous groover, Jones plays music from two recent albums, along with MG’s hits and Stax classics. facebook.com/ronniescottsclub twitter.com/officialronnies PAGE 18 To mark the 25th Anniversary of Jaco’s passing, bass guitar virtuoso Laurence Cottle returns to with “Portrait Of Jaco” a big band project that features stunning recreations of the great bassists ensemble pieces. Cottle, like almost every electric bassist who plays jazz, has been influenced by the former Weather Report star’s style that extended the range of Leo Fender’s humble four string bass guitar to include high pitched harmonics, lead melody playing and of course intricate sax-like solos. Yet Pastorius’ musical legacy goes way beyond his groundbreaking chops, and Cottle has created brand new scores that magnify the smallest musical details that often result in tender harmonic flourishes or dazzling multi-layered contrapuntal melody lines. SUN 26TH: (£20.00 - £32.50) THE RONNIE SCOTT’S BLUES EXPLOSION (see 22nd July listing) www.ronniescotts.co.uk / tel: 02074390747 PAGE 19 August (cont) MON 27TH - WED 29TH: (£25.00 - £40.00) PEE WEE ELLIS FROM JAZZ TO FUNK … AND BACK! FRI 31ST - SAT 1ST SEPT: INCOGNITO Legendary James Brown saxophonist and musical director, Ellis alongside Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley was a key component on Brown’s greatest funk bands and composer of such memorably hits as the much sampled ‘In The Middle’ as well as bringing a touch of jazzy sophistication to Brown’s own fearsome grooves. With over 50 years in the business, Ellis is still a formidable performer and he appears here with his powerhouse funk assembly for what will be night of funk grooves and old fashioned R&B as only the great funk masters can deliver. SUN 30TH: (£30.00 - £50.00) Legendary British jazz funk and acid-jazz band, led by Jean-Paul 'Bluey' Maunick, whose jazzy grooves, soulful vocals and funky horn riffs helped open the door for bands such as Jamiroquai and the Brand New Heavies.
