As we roll on from our liturgical high point of Easter to Pentecost and then finally back into the realm of ordinary time, it is a good moment to reflect on our Christian lives, especially looking at our prayer lives. The source and summit of our faith is the Eucharist and, at the minimum, we are required to attend to this source and summit once a week. We gather as a community to worship the Triune God and climb the mountain to Calvary once again, always remembering that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is exactly that -- a holy sacrifice -- and much less a community “meal.” When we gather each Sunday for Mass, we need to be reminded of what is truly being offered. We do offer the bread and wine to God in order to be changed into the body and blood of Jesus Christ, but in a real way, we offer ourselves. We offer our intentions, our hopes, our dreams, our struggles and our very core as human beings. In order to make our offering fully, we should take some time to recollect ourselves before we enter into the holy of holies and engage fully in the sacrifice of the Mass. Each one of us, ordained, religious or lay faithful, needs that period of quiet prayer to commune with God prior to the celebration of the liturgy. It makes no sense to enter a sporting event without warming up our muscles and stretching our bodies. It makes even less sense to enter into the highest act a man can do, the celebration of Holy Mass, without a proper sense of recollection and preparation. At the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we encounter Christ, we receive Christ, and we are changed. We fail to appreciate the awesomeness of the encounter that will happen and has happened at Mass when we make our Church into a rowdy meeting place of persons rather than a temple of God. I personally have always been moved by the pious soul praying the Rosary before Mass or just simply kneeling before the living God pouring out their lives to Him who makes all things new. From our Associate Pastor My House is a House of Prayer Let us foster a sense of silence at all times in our Church, remembering who resides in that golden tabernacle, and truly offering ourselves at each and every Mass. The celebration of Holy Mass is as valuable as the death of Jesus on the cross. ~ Saint Thomas Aquinas If we really understood the Mass, we would die of joy. ~ Saint Jean Vianney In Christ’s peace, Father Andrew 3 Altar Society Altar linens this week will be cared for by Janet Loehr. Brian McNamara 5 Jubilee Year of Mercy The Book of Psalms contains many beautiful verses of mercy which we have seen these past few months. The word “mercy” speaks about God's love and care for us. As we pray Psalm 145 during this month of May, let us come to truly believe in this great love and care that God provides for us. Psalm 145: I Will Praise Your Name (David Haas) Refrain: I will praise your name, my King and my God. I will praise your name, my King and my God. I will give you glory, my God above, And I will bless your name for ever. Every day I will bless and praise your name for ever. The Lord is full of grace and mercy, Who is kind and slow to anger. God is good in every way, and full of compassion. Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord, And let all the faithful bless you. Let them speak of your might, O Lord, the glory of your kingdom. The Lord is faithful in word and deed, and always near, His name is holy. Lifting up all those who fall, God raises up the lowly. Sunday, May 15, 2016 “[A] reflection of God's own reality shines out in the human person, in every person, whatever the stage or condition of his life.” — Pope Benedict XVI, Address of February 27, 2006 (www.goo.gl/4Bj3ss) © 2006 Libreria Editrice Vaticana Used with permission. 6 Jubilee Year of Mercy Jubilee Year of Mercy ... What is God trying to tell you at this time in your life? Are you facing a closed door? Where is God leading you? Are you resistant to the change? Are you afraid of taking the next step?
