It doesn’t matter whether you’re a regular, weekend, occasional or even first time Seafarer, among these pages you will find excellent company and the ideal holiday at exceptional value for money. HERE’S WHY YOU’LL LOVE SEAFARER TOO: ● We operate modern yachts, all of which are meticulously maintained and many are 2006-2011 models ● Our flotillas are smaller, often 6-8 yachts up to a maximum of 12, whilst our lead crew are hand picked for their experience and local knowledge. ● Whilst we offer an excellent choice of flotillas in varied destinations across 4 countries, we remain a smaller company employing a maximum of 30 dedicated people. ● This means we can offer high quality and a more personal service at great value prices for arguably the best flotilla and beach club holidays on the market. ● All our packages are designed to suit you. Simply tell us what you want from your holiday and we will do the rest. ● You can choose from a selection of fantastic destinations in the warm waters of the Eastern Mediterranean and Caribbean as well as a Worldwide Bareboat Charter selection. ● Your holiday is financially secure as we are fully bonded and ATOL licensed so you can book with total confidence. It all adds up to the perfect holiday afloat – plot your course for adventure now and set sail with Seafarer this summer. If at any time, you require more information to ensure that you get the holiday of your dreams, please do not hesitate to call our experienced and dedicated reservations team. 4 Your summer Seafaring starts here! Seafaring is a way of life for us and our crew. All Seafarer staff are handpicked and professionally trained both in-house and on the water. They will ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience, and share their wealth of local knowledge to guarantee you get the best out of your holiday. SEAFARING FOR BEGINNERS If you’re about to go seafaring for the first time you’re simply spoilt for choice. You can learn to sail with both RYA and pre flotilla courses on offer, whether you join one of our tuition yachts, charter your own yacht complete with private instructor, or start in a more modest way with dinghy and yacht courses at our shore-based beach clubs. Seafaring for Families We love having kids on our flotilla holidays, but we do appreciate they often want things to do other than just sail. Accordingly, during school holidays, on our South Ionian flotilla we have a dedicated kids rep, whilst on all our flotillas we organise events such as beach volleyball and dinghy races, and carry frisbees, beach balls, inflatable sea kayaks and the like to keep them amused. Teenagers can even join the lead yacht for a day. SEAFARING FOR CULTURE VULTURES You’ll be sailing in the wake of history in these beautiful Mediterranean waters and our crew will make sure you have every opportunity to enjoy the local culture by pointing out the sights and sites of interest. We’ll also take in festivals, celebrations and even taverna cooking demonstrations. SEAFARING FOR EVERYONE Seafaring is a way of life for us, but we do understand that this is your well-earned holiday and will do everything we can to make your experience a happy one. That way we hope to get you returning to sail with us summer after summer! 5 6 7 Seafaring in the wake of Homer and Helen The Greeks have been a nation of seafarers since time immemorial – no surprises when large parts of your homelands are either islands or virtually inaccessible by land. Homer referred to these waters as his ‘wine dark sea’, while Helen of Troy was the legendary ‘face that launched 1,000 ships’. And while this Eastern end of the Mediterranean has been both a highway and a crossroads simply for ever, the shores around have provided safe harbour for the travellers and adventurers of history. Today their legacy of picturesque harbours, classic ruins, Byzantine churches and ancient temples is your playground. We have seafaring options in Greece to suit everyone. More adventurous sailors should set a course for the Northern Sporades and Pelion Coast, while those looking for a more leisurely time will enjoy the clement waters cruised by our Saronic Gulf plus North and South Ionian flotillas. The latter coastline plays home to our beach clubs, while Poros and Lefkas are our home ports for our yachting schools. If you fancy sailing on a larger yacht with a professional crew to do most of the work, then join our ‘share a sail’ programmes in the Cyclades and eastern Aegean. Finally we offer ‘bareboat’ charters from a range of bases in the Ionian and throughout the Aegean, including the Sporades, Cyclades or the Dodecanese – the choice is yours. greece SEAFARER BEACH CLUBS GREECE & TURKEY Back in the eighties and nineties, all you needed for a wonderful holiday was a great beach, some dinghy sailing or windsurfing and a really friendly sea front taverna. Our Beach Clubs in Greece and Turkey offer exactly this simple formula, with unlimited sailing, superb and scenic beach front locations, a pool, a taverna and simple comfortable air conditioned rooms, many with sea view. All our clubs are relatively small with between 40 and 60 Seafarer guests, ensuring a friendly atmosphere and personal service from our well qualified sailing team and hotel staff. We have enough equipment to ensure you can always get out on the water and our experienced sailing staff will rig your craft for you if you wish. There is tuition available for beginners and intermediates as well as pre-flotilla yacht courses. Our smaller beach clubs at Nikiana on Lefkas in Greece and Palmetto at Selimiye (See page 38-39) on the Datca peninsula in Turkey have just 20 rooms, each in the most idyllic of settings and are conveniently close to our flotilla bases for club / flotilla 2 centre holidays. The Ionian beach Club is our top family club during school holidays, boasting extensive grounds and a broader range of facilities such as tennis courts, mini golf and mountain bikes plus a kids club. At all our clubs you can be sure of a warm welcome and the friendly atmosphere and service that only smaller clubs can provide. 8 IONIAN BEACH CLUB 9 PELOPONNESE COAST Set in 10 acres of mature gardens directly on a good beach with stunning views of distant mountains across the gulf. This is definitely 'off the beaten track' Greece. The property also attracts a local Greek clientele giving you a more authentic Greek holiday experience unlike other exclusively British centres, though sailing is offered exclusively to Seafarer guests. At our superb beach side setting we have excellent dinghy sailing and windsurfing equipment at your disposal during your stay. There are great facilities for all the family, whilst use of all the sailing equipment, as well as the tennis courts and swimming pool plus half board meal arrangements are included in the price of your holiday. During school holidays we also operate a free kids club. The Club has 80 bungalow style rooms in total. Within a short drive is the traditional fishing hamlet of Achaia with authentic fish tavernas. The market town of Kato Achaia has a good range of shops. There is plenty to explore in the local area, most notable being ancient Olympia less than an hour’s drive away. CLUB/FLOTILLA For those booking an additional week or two on one of our Ionian flotillas, a transfer to our flotilla base at Lefkas is included. The Beach Club can also be combined with our Saronic Gulf flotilla, though this does involve a longer transfer. beach club IONIAN BEACH CLUB DINGHY SAILING, WINDSURFING & MUCH MORE CLUB FACILITIES On site facilities include the terrace restaurant overlooking the beach, the beach bar with its chic sofas, also a snack bar overlooking the large freshwater swimming pool. The good news is that for summer 2011 we’re turning back the clock and offering just that at Seafarer’s Nikiana Beach Club. Located in Nikiana village on Lefkas island, this small and perfectly formed beach front complex has 20 rooms, a fresh water swimming pool and a family run taverna. Set in a quiet location with stunning scenery, the beach is sand and shingle and it’s a simple, traditional style property where nearly all rooms have either full or partial sea view. However, it is not without proper ‘mod cons’, with en suite shower / WC, a balcony, refrigerator and a TV with satellite channels in every room. Accommodation is offered on a BB basis, since the family run taverna on site is too good to miss, whilst the walk into the village for a good choice of alternatives is an easy stroll. 12 THE WEATHER Daily sunshine is virtually guaranteed. At one extreme you can still discover uninhabited islands and hidden away coves. At the other you have harbour sides full of Venetian charm and sophistication. In between, translucent waters, short passages and clement conditions, ideal for the more relaxed sailor. In the Northern Ionian, sailing from Lefkas over one or two weeks, we take in delightful bays and harbours on the Epirus mainland as well as the beautiful Isles of Paxos, Anti-Paxos with the lush island of Corfu featured in the 2 week itinerary. In the Southern Ionian, sailing from our base at Lefkas we plot a course for the pristine waters of Meganisi and onwards to the sophistication of Fiskardo and the sheer serenity of Aghia Efymia on Kefalonia. Week two takes us via Kastos and Kalamos to Ithaka and the stark beauty of the Dragoneras before returning to Lefkas. Each island has its own unique allure as part of the patchwork Ionian experience. You can swim in iridescent waters, explore timeless villages set amongst olive groves and vineyards, and indulge in the tastes and flavours of native Greece in traditional tavernas and lively bars. It’s a wonderful fusion of ease and adventure. SAIL & STAY The verdant island of Lefkas and neighbouring Meganisi are still more popular with locals than foreigners which ensures you can still find authentic local cuisine. From here our first week normally takes us north via Epidavros, with its fabulous amphitheatre, to visit the floating fruit and veg boats in the pistachio and pottery port of Aegina town. En route we drop anchor at sleepy Perdika, Korfos and Vathi. Week two finds us south of Poros in the mythical and sheltered waters of the Argolic Gulf visiting Hydra, rich in local art where cars are banned and donkeys rule the road. Onwards to historic Nauplion, with its imposing castle and Venetian quarter. We then slow things right down for the final few days cruising around the delightful fishing ports of Astros and Ermioni. We usually hold our beach party on the island of Spetses, then a day's free sailing before returning to Poros – make sure you don’t miss this ancient volcanic island’s neo-classical wrought iron balconied buildings, all multi-coloured doors and shutters marching up the hillside. SAIL & STAY Poros plus the neighbouring islands of Hydra and Spetses offer a wealth of choice for a two-centre holiday. Another possibility is to combine this flotilla with the Ionian Beach Club, though requiring a longer transfer. The proximity of the historic city of Athens, with it's unique and spectacular ancient monuments, great shopping and cosmopolitan nightlife, presents an ideal opportunity to take in some history and culture. Simply call us to discuss your requirements. greece ITINERARY SARONIC GULF & PELOPONNESE DEPARTING EVERY SATURDAY FROM APRIL TO OCTOBER - 7 OR 14 NIGHTS THE AEGINA ROUTE Sat Fly UK to Athens and transfer by hydrofoil to Poros for embarkation. The small islands here are beautiful with sandy beaches, wooded headlands and pretty villages. It’s a ‘must see’ area for Greece lovers with ‘must sail’ waters for more experienced crews. From our homeport on Skiathos we take advantage of fresh sailing winds heading west to the more sheltered Gulf of Volos to visit Paleo Trikeri and historic Pegadi in the lee of the Pelion peninsula and Amaliopolis. Next we visit the splendour of Evia and Orei where an ancient Acropolis still guards the harbour. Our route back to Skiathos stops off at one of the areas famed beaches, Koukounaries. The Sporades cruise plots a course around relatively undiscovered islands such as Alonissos with its scenic harbours at Patitiri and Steni Vala or beautiful Skopelos, a traditional hillside harbour town. The beaches are simply lovely and the scenery is stunning. SAIL & STAY If you were going to design a Greek holiday island from scratch, it would almost certainly end up looking like Skiathos. At one end you’ll find the main town harbour full of bobbing boats, waterfront restaurants, shops and villas. At the other end are the sands of Koukounaria – beaches so extravagant in their beauty they’re almost mythical. In between you’ll discover pine clad hills, hidden coves, out of the way tavernas. The word ‘idyllic’ doesn’t do it justice. We can organise a second week ashore with a choice of hotels from 3-5* as well as private villas and apartments. The neighbouring islands of Skopelos and Alonisos are quieter and delightfully authentic. The Pelion peninsula offers even more choice on the mainland. greece ITINERARY NORTHERN SPORADES & PELION DEPARTING EVERY FRIDAY FROM MAY TO OCTOBER - 7 OR 14 NIGHTS THE PELION ROUTE Fri Fly UK to Skiathos and transfer to the harbour for embarkation. Sat Paleo Trikeri – after a morning briefing sail to this sleepy fishing harbour, great for hill walks in this little island’s interior. Welcome punch party. Sun Amaliopolis – time to explore the gulf and a leisurely swim stop before anchoring for the night. Mon Pegadi – a quaint fishing harbour with authentic tavernas. Be sure to explore the ruined tower of Achilles. Tue Orei – sail to the north coast of Evia island and visit this lively little resort with its ancient Acropolis guarding the harbour. Wed Koukounaries – we sail east towards Skiathos and famous Koukounaries, a fantastic beach backed by a pine forest and a low key resort. Thu Our two-week flotilla commences two days of independent sailing, whilst one week clients return to Skiathos with the prospect of a lively night out. Fri Arrivals & departures. Two-week flotilla on independent sailing – explore the South Pelion Coast or southern Skopelos then rendezvous at Patitiri on Alonissos. THE SPORADES ROUTE Fri Arrivals and departures in Skiathos – two week flotilla continues free sailing. Sat Patitiri – Capital of Alonissos and an enchanting and timeless harbour. Sun Peristeri or Pelagos – a chance to escape and explore uninhabited islands. The perfect venues for our fortnightly beach party. We can also organise tuition from Poros in the Saronic Gulf. Our Courses... Alternatively you can choose to charter one of our tuition yachts exclusively for your own party and we can provide a live-aboard instructor for an RYA course or pre-flotilla training – it’s a great way to combine a holiday and sailing course for friends or the family. Some nights we meet up with the flotilla for social events, and after one week’s training many guests progress to skippering a yacht in the flotilla in week two. Courses on our tuition yachts include continental breakfast and light lunch plus fuel, port dues and taxes. Tuition with private charter does not include any catering, fuel and mooring, costs of which are extra. THEORY COURSES AND MILE BUILDERS - During the winter we offer shore based theory courses in the UK including day skipper theory, coastal skipper/yachtmaster theory, RYA marine VHF radio course. PLEASE ASK FOR DETAILS. 32 33 Seafaring on the Turquoise Coast The word ‘turquoise’ is often associated with these coastal ‘Turkish’ waters – a translucent iridescent shimmering mirage of blues that constantly changes. The colour comes from the bright sunshine bouncing off the golden sands and rocks in shallow coves – this is a fabulous part of the world to explore, and many chose to return again and again. Get a little offshore and the cruising can become more challenging – with the reward for an exhilarating day on deck coming in the shape of dinner and drinks in a solitary ‘lokanta’ in an idylic secluded anchorage inaccessible by road, and so typical of this tranquil and unspoilt region. Our home ports are Orhaniye, Marmaris and Gocek. Our alternating one or two week itineraries – the Lycean, Carian and Hisaronu Cruises can be booked for either one or two weeks with alternating embarkation in Marmaris Orhaniye or Gocek giving the possibility of one way flotillas or the chance to go ‘intercontinental.’ Our Gokova two week flotilla also has intercontinental possibilities, crossing from Asia Minor to Europe in the form of the Greek island of Symi, as well as exploring off the beaten track. Bareboat charters operate out of Mamaris and Gocek for the Lycian Coast or Bodrum or Orhaiye for the Gulfs of Gokova and Hisaronu. We have limitless Sail and Stay choices, and also offer Gulet cruises through our Small Ship Adventures brochure. For Sail & Stay, try our Palmetto Beach Club at Selimiye with unlimited dinghy sailing and windsurfing. turkey LYCIAN & CARIAN FLOTILLAS THE TURKISH COAST With home ports at Marmaris, Orhaniye and Gocek, we offer plenty of choice on our Lycian, Carian and Hisaronu flotillas, and the departure date you choose will determine your heading and route. The Lycian flotilla cruises to the south and east between Marmaris and Gocek taking in Fethiye en route. The Carian route heads north and west sailing the coast between Marmaris and Orhaniye including Bozburun and Datca. Our Hisaronu and Gokova ‘intercontinental’ flotillas sail from Orhaniye exploring the coast further north with the opportunity to visit Symi in Greece, crossing between Asia Minor and Europe. Whether you sail South East or North West you’ll be on a voyage of discovery along a coast dotted with pine-wooded fjords and secluded anchorages set amongst the romantic ruins of ancient civilisations. 34 35 THE WEATHER Sailing Conditions are reliable with north-westerly winds Force 24, occasionally 5-6, from late morning to late afternoon. St Vincent & Grenadines Flotilla Our flotilla is based in Blue Lagoon on the main, and largest of the islands, St Vincent. The island is steeped in history and rich in cultural heritage, much of which can be seen when strolling around the capital, Kingstown. St Vincent is also the home to the oldest botanical gardens in the western hemisphere, and a descendant of one of Captain Bligh's breadfruit trees can be found, brought to the island on HMS Bounty. During your Caribbean flotilla holiday around these islands, you'll visit Mustique, Bequia, Union Island and the Tobago Cays to name but a few of the breathtaking islands that make up this tropical paradise. From snorkelling around the corals in crystal clear waters to dining on exquisite seafood and exotic local fruits, you are guaranteed to experience the sailing holiday of a lifetime. caribbean ITINERARY ST VINCENT & THE GRENADINES DEPARTURES EVERY OTHER SATURDAY FROM 12 DECEMBER TO 10 APRIL - 14 NIGHTS 14 Day Flotilla Sailing Itinerary Day 1 Arrivals and transfer to our flotilla base in Blue Lagoon, St Vincent for embarkation and welcome punch party. Turquoise bays and palm-lined sandy spits contrast with volcanic peaks. THE WHITSUNDAYS 74 emeralds scattered off the coast of North Queensland. This enchanting national park is sheltered from the ocean by the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea. Temperatures range 75° to 85° while the trade winds are generally easterly. THE SEYCHELLES An exquisite archipelago of 110 islands in the southern Indian Ocean, almost uninhabited except for the main island of Mahe. These islands are renowned for the richness of their flora and fauna. Yacht charter is a relatively recent arrival, temperatures average between 75° to 85° and the trade winds are usually easterly. 49 CLASSIFICATION OF VESSELS We have divided our charter yachts into Premier and Club fleets. Our Premier fleet features the latest models (generally less than 3 years old) with up-tothe-minute specifications. Our Club fleet consists of slightly older models and some locally built yachts. These are maintained to the same high standards, but are more economical to charter. Sailing Yachts Our selection encompasses classic cruising sailboats, cruiser-racers and catamarans. These range from 28 to 61ft, and can accommodate two to twelve passengers in comfort. Makes and models vary according to destination. There is generally a balance of French, American, and locally built yachts. Motor Yachts A modern motor yacht fuses spaciousness and style with the exhilaration of cruising at greater speeds. We feature cruisers capable of accommodating up to nine passengers crewed Crewed CHARTER You have your own private yacht and to enjoy the experience you can take a turn at the helm – or not lift a finger. Your skilled crew will endeavour to arrange everything based on the activities, places and cuisine you enjoy most. Larger vessels are airconditioned. Additional facilities may include a swimming platform, a jet ski or ski boat and even a Jacuzzi. Each is unique and we have a fabulous choice: MOTOR YACHTS The power, panache and panoply of watersports equipment make a crewed motor yacht a particularly appealing proposition. SAIL CRUISERS Revel in the romance and timeless elegance of life on board a thoroughbred sailing vessel. MOTOR SAILERS or Gulets Sail-assisted motor vessels are especially popular in the Aegean and Adriatic. These traditionally built wooden yachts combine traditional charm with modern comforts. Child discounts are limited to one child per full fare paying adult. QUALIFICATIONS & SAILING EXPERIENCE Skippering a flotilla yacht is immensely enjoyable and relatively easy, particularly during the summer months when winds are steady and the weather reasonably predictable. On flotilla, the short passages between anchorages mean that willing helpers onboard will not become bored or restless. Skipper qualification requirements vary between countries and though not always required, we recommend that the skipper has an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) as a minimum, which is equivalent to the RYA Day Skipper practical qualification. In the Saronic Gulf or Ionian Isles in Greece, formal sailing qualifications are generally required though in these two more moderate areas, verifiable experience may be sufficient (we will advise at the time of booking). If you have only limited previous sailing experience possibly gained by dinghy sailing at local club level or perhaps acting as an occasional crew member on a cruising/racing yacht, we recommend you enroll on one of our pre flotilla or RYA training courses, either pre departure, or in resort. Crews sailing from other bases such as The Sporades in Greece, The Dalmatian coast of Croatia or the coast of Turkey on flotilla or bareboat charter, can expect more challenging sailing. Therefore formal qualifications plus a higher degree of sailing experience and navigational knowledge are usually required. In the absence of qualifications, a resumé of your sailing experience backed up by a reference from a recognised sailing club may be accepted in Greece or Turkey but not in Croatia. The larger yachts require skippers with experience of handling yachts of a similar size and an internationally recognised qualification such as Coastal Skipper or higher may be required, though in general an ICC qualification is widely recognised and accepted. In all cases original certificates should be taken with you. Should you have any concerns regarding the suitability of a particular holiday, yacht or cruising area, then please call our knowledgeable reservation staff, who will be pleased to discuss and advise on the options available to you. To help verify the crew experience, the lead named person making the booking should complete the Sailing Experience section on the booking form and include passport details. Seafarer cannot accept responsibility for expenses incurred by you or any 51 liability, should a person in authority (flotilla skipper or port authorities) deem it necessary to provide a professional skipper for safety or legal reasons to assist you in sailing the chartered vessel during your holiday. EMBARKATION AND JOINING INSTRUCTIONS If you are taking flights arranged by Seafarer, on flotilla, the transfers to the yacht base will be provided. However, if you are making your own travel arrangements then the yacht location and our agent's contact details will be provided to you with your travel documents. You can usually embark your charter yacht by or shortly after 18:00 hrs. The yacht will have been cleaned and will be presented to you in a seaworthy condition with a full inventory of equipment, full tank of fuel, water, gas and bed linen. Towels are not always provided onboard. Further details on what to pack, check-in procedures and itinerary info will be provided with your travel documentation. Disembarkation is by 9 am. ITINERARIES The Flotilla itineraries shown in this brochure are intended as a general guide. Our flotilla skippers are responsible to act with the the safety and comfort of all persons in mind, as well as to protect the yachts and equipment on flotilla. They are permitted to vary the itinerary sailed if in their opinion the weather or operating conditions make this necessary. YACHT INVENTORIES RESPONSIBLE TRAVEL Our yachts are thoughtfully designed and comprehensively equipped with an inventory specifically chosen for Mediterranean sailing holidays. Aboard each yacht your will find: Adult and children size life jackets, life harnesses, an inflatable dinghy (outboard available at supplement), pilot book, navigation charts and equipment, cooking utensils and a full set of bed linen. Fitted to each yacht are: Shower with hot water, deck shower, Bimini hood, an electric fridge, a radio/CD player, GPS and VHF radio. Most yachts are equipped with depth, log and wind instruments. The inventory and specifications described within this brochure are given as a general guideline and a fair representation of the yachts and their equipment available from Seafarer Cruising & Sailing Holidays and our suppliers or agents. Specifications may change from one supplier to another. If confirmation of specific equipment is required on a particular boat we will be pleased to provide this in writing. At Seafarer we endeavour to respect the natural environment in which we sail as well as the laws, people and culture of our host countries. On this basis our staff will advise on issues such as avoiding pollution through use of appropriate eco friendly detergents on board our yachts, correct use of holding tanks and disposing of litter responsibly. We will also encourage you to conserve water which is an increasingly scarce resource in these communities and sail rather then motor, whenever possible. We will advise on local regulations you should be aware of. Note: Whilst we endeavour to ensure that all flotilla yachts have holding tanks, on some bareboats or extra yachts hired in to our flotillas, this cannot be guaranteed. This may especially apply in Croatia due to initiatives aimed at encouraging marina use. Yacht crews are encouraged to use marina or shore facilities wherever possible. Croatian marina charges range from £1-£1.50 per foot per night and most provide hot showers, toilets, and a reception with currency exchange, water, fuel, shore power, shops bar and a restaurant. In Greece and Turkey marinas are less common and mooring charges are considerably lower or often simply not charged. Additionally, we actively promote the history and culture of our host countries and endeavour to contribute to the local economy and communities. For example we try to make use of local suppliers and materials wherever possible, support local events as well as support local conservation initiatives. In this way we are hopefully doing our part towards the common goal of ensuring that these beautiful and largely unspoilt areas are there to be enjoyed by future generations.
