STATE OF THE HOSPICE
By Martha S. Todd
President and Board Chair
Dear Friends,
No different from 2013, year 2014 brought its own challenges. Sadly, we
lost two additional revered and highly respected PCH Board Members. Both
Jim Cowart and Phil Maffett were taken from us all too quickly. They each
held a special place in the hearts of many and were always there when we
needed their wisdom and counsel. They were men of integrity and their love
for the Peachtree Christian Hospice community mission was unquestionable.
They will be sorely missed. You will see our tribute to these fine men on
the facing page.

On the brighter side, our 2014 Gala was another grand success and our 2014
“Bill Todd Memorial” Golf Classic was the biggest surprise of all – exceeding
our goal by $23,000. I hasten to add, however, we have experienced many
unanticipated expenses in the past year, thus forcing us to make several
rather difficult decisions. With that being said, please do not forget PCH as
you plan your charitable giving for this year.
On yet another “high” note, due to the ingenuity and forward-thinking of
Anne Mancini, our Vice President of Operations, you will read on pages 6-7
about several exciting new programs and “giving” opportunities for our
faithful patrons and any future patrons and donors.
As 2014 drew to a close, we jubilantly celebrated our own
Dr. Hampton Groover, PCH Medical Director, as he received the 2014
Gwinnett Chamber Healthcare Excellence “Physician of the Year” Award
in the Specialist Category. Please join me and the Directors of PCH in
congratulating Dr. Groover on this distinguished achievement, showcased
on page 20.
In spite of the challenges we have faced in 2014, I am pleased to report the
“State of the Hospice” remains excellent! As we move into 2015, please
allow me to encourage all of you to support our upcoming Gala to be held
on April 30th, once again at the historic Atlanta Athletic Club. It will be an
enchanting evening to remember. Please join me in making this year’s event
“Another Grand Success!!!”
My Personal and Heartfelt Thanks to all of you who have given so much, and
God Bless Each and Every One of You in this New Year!

James H. Cowart
September 22, 1931 - August 15, 2014
Jim Cowart, age 83, passed away at his home on August 15, 2014. His career spanned
over 50 years, beginning in 1958 with the forming of Jim Cowart Inc., which was the start
of many residential communities. Jim’s commercial development began with assembling
91 acres on I-285, which is now known as Perimeter Center and marked the beginning of
Perimeter Mall. He generously donated the profits of the Perimeter Center transaction to 38
area churches. This transaction began the business corridor of North Atlanta. Jim devoted
most of his business expertise to projects in North Fulton and Gwinnett County. North of
the Chattahoochee, he developed Royal 400 for more Class A development which would
later become North Point Parkway. He was best known for developing and marketing the
most successful residential luxury communities in North Atlanta. As stated by Brandon
Beach, CEO of North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, “Everywhere you look in North Fulton,
you will find Jim Cowart’s fingerprints.” Further, a long-time supporter of Mercer University
and Life Trustee to the Mercer Board, Mercer University Chancellor Kirby Godsey stated:
“Mercer University would not have an Atlanta Campus today without Jim Cowart’s help.”
Bill Underwood, President of Mercer University, said of Jim, “He was such an important part
of the heritage of Mercer University.”
As a renowned developer and philanthropist, Jim received numerous prestigious awards.
He served on the Board of Directors for Peachtree Christian Hospice and was a very loyal
supporter and major contributor to the Peachtree Christian Hospice mission. Jim was devoted to his family, church, community,
and served honorably in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Linda, three sons, a daughter, a stepdaughter, and 20 grandchildren.
Phillip W. Maffett
May 7, 1924 - May 8, 2014
Phil Maffett, age 90, passed away at Peachtree Christian Hospice on May 8, 2014. He began
his career in 1950 with the Vol T. Blacknall Company. Phil then served as Vice President and
Director of the Hillsman Company of Georgia, a successful carpet company. Later, he joined
Patcraft Industries in Dalton, Georgia, where he served as President of Marketing.
Phil’s life was characterized by a hard work ethic and complete devotion to his family, church,
God, community, and country. He served on the Board of Directors for Peachtree Christian
Hospice and was a generous supporter of its mission. He also served honorably in the United
States Navy during World War II and was deeply involved in many organizations, such as
Peachtree Christian Church, Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity, the Atlanta Union Mission, the Boy’s
High Alumni Association, as well as many others. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was
particularly fond of the great rivers of the South. Phil will be best remembered for his ability
to tell a funny joke or story in the great Southern tradition.
His wife, Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Anderson, predeceased him in 2008. Phil was blessed with
four children, seven grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.

Martha Newton, LMSW
Monica Johnson
Social Worker and Volunteer
Coordinator
Director of Community Relations
Monica Johnson joined Peachtree Christian
Hospice in September, 2014 as the Director
of Community Relations. A graduate of
Southern Connecticut State University,
Monica has a background that spans the
marketing gamut. Before moving south, Monica spent almost
10 years working in the Boston area for Reebok International,
managing their Influence-Group Marketing Programs. From
there, she moved to small business and commercial real estate,
guiding marketing functions for such companies as Notre Dame
Academy, Sperry Van Ness, and Grubb & Ellis. Most recently,
she was the owner of a small business that partnered with
Graphic Media, Inc. to launch the international distribution of
the iSign Smart Antenna, a proximity-to-mobile marketing
technology. Monica and her husband, Bob, have been married
for 21 years. They have three children. Robby is a senior in high
school, Joe is a sophomore, and Katie is in 6th grade. Monica
has been an active volunteer in her church, having taught Faith
Formation for 10+ years. She enjoys watching her boys play
football and coaching her daughter’s lacrosse teams. She is
also a competitive tennis player. Monica loves to spend time
fishing with her husband, and cooking for friends and family.
Martha Newton joined Peachtree
Christian Hospice in August 2014
as Volunteer Coordinator and Social
Worker. Martha is a recent graduate of
Georgia State University with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology,
and of the University of Georgia with a Masters Degree in Social
Work. For the past year, she has worked on a home team in the
Gainesville office of Pruitt Health Hospice. Throughout her
schooling, Martha worked with homeless families and families
affected by domestic violence while working for the Salvation
Army and Rainbow Village. In addition, Martha interned at the
Fuqua Center for Late-Life Depression, co-facilitating support
groups for older adults with symptoms of mild cognitive
impairment and developing a Friendly Visiting Program at the
Wesley Woods Towers. This is when Martha truly found her love
for working with older adults and developed her passions in
the social work field. Martha and her husband, Josh, have been
married for three years and reside in Norcross. Martha’s hobbies
include running, hiking, tennis, and traveling.

Jackie Rossell, Dietitian
Jackie Rossell officially retired from Peachtree Christian Hospice after 14 years of service as dietitian. Jackie
enjoyed cooking good, nutritional meals for the patients. She also took pleasure in being part of a team of
professionals that contributed to a greater cause. Her most memorable moments were working with the Meals On
Wheels team, helping with Christmas party celebrations, being asked to make her special tea, and assisting with
the day-to-day activities of caring for patients. Sharing the heartfelt sentiments of all PCH staff, Natalie McNeal,
PCH Administrator, extols, “Thank you, Jackie, for your 14 years of service at PCH! Enjoy retirement and stop in on
occasion to say ‘hello’!”
Rev. Kevin DeCantilon, M. Div. Chaplain
Kevin DeCantilon retired from Peachtree Christian Hospice in August, 2014. He was admired for his exceptional
knowledge of denominational practices and philosophies, tender compassion for PCH patients and their loved
ones, and quick wit. “Kevin pioneered our veterans’ recognition program,” said Natalie McNeal, PCH Administrator.
“His attention to detail and compassionate spiritual care are qualities that made PCH a better place for our patients
and their loved ones.” Kevin’s service and friendship will be sorely missed by all at PCH. We wish Kevin the best of
health and happiness in his retirement.
Spotlight
Chuck Beckman
Area Director for Mercy Music
In the very last hours of life, therapeutic music
can be presented in such a way as to help the
body relax and allow the patient to transition in a
peaceful and stress-free environment.
In Zephaniah 3:17, the Lord declares “He is
in our midst, a mighty one who saves; He
rejoices over us with gladness; quiets us by
His love and He exults over us with singing.”
At Peachtree Christian Hospice, we experience
God “singing” over His children through the
gift of music.
Chuck Beckman, Area Director for Mercy
Music, is a Certified Music Practitioner who
plays therapeutic music for our patients.
Chuck’s clinical training allows him to assess
a patient’s condition and play the appropriate
music that is tailored to each patient’s needs
at the time of his visit. Clinical research
reveals that properly applied therapeutic
music consistently lowers a patient’s heart
rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate. By
carefully monitoring a patient, the practitioner
plays and modifies the music as required,
to ensure that the patient benefits from the
session. From respite patients to those who
are actively dying, therapeutic music provides
comfort and encouragement to nearly all
patients in any condition.
Therapeutic music is particularly effective
in helping patients deal with physical pain,
agitation, anxiety, and the emotional stress
that are common among patients facing end-
of-life issues. Therapeutic music creates an
environment where spiritual, emotional, and
physical healing may occur for the patient or
the patient’s family. While music does not
necessarily provide a physical cure, the music
carries a healing presence that allows patients
to relax. In fact, many of our patients fall
asleep during therapeutic music sessions.
To simplify this concept even further,
therapeutic musicians are able to play
music that “tricks” the brain into releasing
endorphins, which helps patients relax and
rest. Tempo and mode are just two musical
factors that practitioners modify to help
soothe their patients. In the very last hours
of life, therapeutic music can be presented
in such a way as to help the body relax and
allow the patient to transition in a peaceful
and stress-free environment.
Regardless of spiritual, ethnic, or cultural
backgrounds, we believe that God has
uniquely designed each of us to respond to
His gift of music. We are pleased to provide
this wonderful gift for our patients and family
members and trust that this ministry comforts
and encourages patients and their families
during their time at Peachtree Christian
Hospice.
“When Chuck
begins playing
music for the
patients and
visitors, the
atmosphere
of serenity is
enhanced. The
day slows down a
lot, and there is
an unquestionable
sense of calmness
that abounds.”
Rev. Larry Connelly, PCH Chaplain

Special Programs
The Heart2Heart Program is comprised of personalized
services that help to impart comfort, compassion, and hope
to our patients and their loved ones.
Patriotic Pinning Ceremony and
Keepsake Quilt
We know veterans have unique end-of-life reconciliation needs
– especially those who have served in wars and conflicts. And
their families have often sacrificed so much. Heart2Heart gifts
permit PCH to honor and thank each veteran who becomes a
patient in our Hospice. With a Patriotic Pinning Ceremony that
includes the presentation of a keepsake quilt and certificate,
Heart2Heart gifts allow us to salute a veteran - one last time.
Memorial Garden Pavers
Peachtree Christian Hospice has been well recognized for the
extraordinary care our dedicated staff provides to patients. It is in
gratitude of this compassion and care that families often wish to gift
a lasting legacy in memory of their loved one. Through Heart2Heart
and with the help of Frankie Stewart, Funeral Director at Tim Stewart
Funeral Home, PCH has begun a Memorial Garden Pavers program.
This program provides a memorial opportunity to comfort families who
long for permanent commemoration of their loved one in the place
they shared their final time together.
Veterans Victory Garden
With the help of Tony Price, Aftercare Director at Tim Stewart
Funeral Home, PCH now participates in the national “We Honor
Veterans” program to honor all veterans who become patients in
our Center. Tony graciously helped conceptualize the building of a
Veterans Victory Garden. Heart2Heart gifts will provide funding to
build it and pay tribute to the countless number of veterans who
have served our country. This serene corner of our grounds will
provide a special retreat of solace and beauty to honor those who
have served.
Heart2Heart Jewelry
Designed by the Gem Shopping Network, the Heart2Heart Pendant and Lapel Pin are made of
Sterling Silver, and available in different sizes. Thanks to P.J. Lynch, longtime friend of PCH and
former CEO of the Gem Shopping Network, and Claudia Hassell of the Gem Shopping Network,
these beautiful pieces have been made available for purchase to honor the memory of loved
ones. And for each pendant or pin purchased, Gem Shopping Network donates $25 to Peachtree
Christian Hospice.

Our Community
Has a Heart for Hospice
Notre Dame Academy , 9-Year PCH Partner National Charity League Expands
Their Service to PCH
Notre Dame Academy has
been a service partner
with PCH for nine years.
This year’s 6th grade
students have spent
much time collaborating
with PCH staff to learn
about hospice and to
decide how they could
best support our mission.
Their efforts were greatly
appreciated by all. The
students worked hard as they organized a snack drive to stock our family
centers to help keep families comfortable while here. They later provided
large baskets full of home-baked goodies adorned with well-wishes
for the staff and families. And December brought beautiful music, as
students visited PCH singing Christmas carols in the family rooms.
“Students really enjoyed making these
cards for the staff and the families, and I
believe they all now have a special place
in their hearts for hospice!”
Ms. Kelsey Harper,
Notre Dame Academy, 6th Grade Teacher
2014 Gwinnett Great Days of Service
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers who participated
in the Annual Gwinnett Great Days of Service held at PCH on Saturday,
October 4. We had 24 dedicated volunteers who worked hard to lay 200
bales of pine straw around the Hospice Center. Due to the efforts of these
wonderful volunteers, the landscape looked vibrant with the fresh layer of
ground cover, which is especially important at our Center as it contributes
to the serenity that our patients and their families desire at such a difficult
time in their lives.
2014 marked the second
year that the Dunwoody
Chapter of the National
Charity League selected
PCH as their Service
Partner for 11th grade girls.
And their contributions
are numerous!
Each
month
patients
and
their families benefit
from their generosity,
as the girls decorate
wreaths to festively adorn
each patient room. Plus, they charitably organize monthly
donations of snack foods for staff and families, candy for the
front desk, and Kleenex and registration bags. On November
9, they hosted a Staff Appreciation Luncheon for those who
were on duty that day. It was a very busy day, but the staff
members were able to find a few minutes away from patients
to enjoy Honey Baked Ham with homemade sides and
cookies. And, as continued evidence of their graciousness,
on November 23, the family areas at PCH were transformed
as the National Charity League decorated the Christmas trees.
The Dunwoody Chapter of the National Charity League has
been wonderful to PCH, and we are truly grateful that they
have chosen PCH as their service partner.
City of Duluth Surprises PCH
The loss of an associate inspired City of Duluth employees, Leslie
Ward, Beth Reeves, Kent Graham, Maggie Waddell, and Teresa
Lynn to ensure that every patient door at PCH be adorned with
a beautiful wreath to perpetuate the serenity that so classically
defines PCH. “PCH staff, patients, and families are deeply
grateful for the extraordinary thoughtfulness,” said Martha Todd
of the beautiful wreathes that were made and gifted by these
wonderful City of Duluth employees.

Staff Celebrates
its Commitment to Hospice
Appreciation Tea at Christmastime
A tradition at Peachtree Christian Hospice is to host a
Christmas Tea in appreciation of the dedication the trained
volunteers and others in the community so graciously
provide. As in years past, long-time volunteer Cheri
Lawson magnificently decorated the reception area and
dining room. Those in attendance enjoyed the exquisite
Christmas ambiance and the beautiful musical talents
of the Honorable Bucky Johnson, Mayor of Norcross, his
wife, Janet, and Jan Appling. Thereafter, a lavish buffet
of treats, punch, and tea was served. Later, all were
surprised when two Duluth police officers dropped off an
abundance of food for the staff and families!
Christmas with the Staff
14th Anniversary Staff Ice Cream Party
The staff celebrated Christmas together, enjoying a catered
lunch followed by a Secret Santa Gift Exchange.
2014 Staff Retreat
In October, Peachtree Christian Hospice celebrated its 14-year
anniversary with an Ice Cream Party for the staff. Pictured above
are Natalie McNeal, Administrator; Karen Sytsma, Admissions Nurse;
Anne Mancini, VP of Operations; Dr. Hampton Groover, Medical
Director; and Martha Todd, President and Board Chair.
In September, 2014, the staff of Peachtree Christian Hospice and PruittHealth
Hospice attended an off-site retreat to launch its participation in “We Honor
Veterans,” a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization
(NHPCO). In collaboration with the Department of Veterans Affairs, the program
recognizes the unique needs of America’s veterans and their families, and trains
hospice staff on how to accompany and guide them through their life stories
toward a more peaceful ending. The program was graciously facilitated by Tony
Price, Aftercare Director at Tim Stewart Funeral Home. And we offer a special
thanks to Frankie Stewart, Jeremy Watkins, and Tony Price, all of the Tim Stewart
Funeral Home, for offering the use of their spectacular Georgia Cremation facility
to host the retreat, as well as for their generosity throughout the year in bringing
lunches, treats, and other wonderful surprises to the PCH staff.
Ser vant Leader
The Scott Hudgens
“Good and Faithful Servant” Award
It is because of the wisdom and vision of Mr.
D. Scott Hudgens, Jr. that Peachtree Christian
Hospice exists. He saw and understood
the crucial need for a facility like Peachtree
Christian Hospice. He had the insight to
recognize numerous needs in the community
and the desire and resources to satisfy them.
It was with an unselfish heart and spirit that
he gladly contributed millions to his beloved
community. Though a successful developer,
his business insight translated with the
greatest of ease into visionary philanthropic
ventures.
Over the years, he contributed much to
the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. During his
final years, he concentrated most of his
attention on Gwinnett County by unselfishly
funding the Gwinnett Children’s Shelter, the
Jacqueline Casey Hudgens Center for the
Arts, the Hudgens Family Special Care Center
at Annandale Village, the Hudgens Center at
Gwinnett Health System, Rainbow Village,
and Peachtree Christian Hospice. The list of
organizations touched by Scott Hudgens’
generous heart is endless.
Scott Hudgens was also a patriot to his
country. Just prior to his death, the Federal
Government accepted his donation of 750
acres of property for the Veterans’ Cemetery
in Cherokee County.
A longtime friend stated it best: “Scott
Hudgens enjoyed finding out what was
needed and seeing that need fulfilled; that
was just the way Scott operated.”
The Scott Hudgens “Good and Faithful Servant” Award is
presented on an annual basis to an individual who has
exhibited an unselfish spirit of caring for other people and a
genuine interest in the community.

The Scott Hudgens
“Good and Faithful Servant” Award
presented to Neil L. Pruitt, Jr.
Neil L. Pruitt, Jr. is the Chairman and
Chief Executive Officer of Norcross-based
PruittHealth. His unparalleled focus on
the delivery of quality health care brings
him national attention as shown by his
Congressional appointment in 2013 to the
Commission on Long-Term Care, a panel
of 15 members charged with development
of plans for a comprehensive, coordinated,
and high-quality system ensuring longterm care for older adults and people with
disabilities. He is the Immediate Past Chair
of the Board of Governors for the American
Health Care Association, Vice Chair for the
Georgia Board of Regents, Chair of the
Board of Trustees for the University System
of Georgia Foundation, a Board member of the Georgia Regents
Health System, a Board member of the PruittCares Foundation,
Chair of the Georgia Regents Health System Audit, Compliance
and Enterprise Risk Management Committee, and a past Chair of
the Georgia Health Care Association.
He joined UHS-Pruitt Corporation, recently re-branded
PruittHealth, in September of 1997 as Project Manager where
he oversaw the grant writing for Title III programs and other
grants offered by the State of Georgia. He was an Assistant
Administrator in an affiliated metro-Atlanta skilled nursing
facility, later assuming the position of Executive Director for
UniHealth Solutions. Under his leadership, UniHealth Solutions
was reengineered from a case management company for
commercial patients into an entry point for patients into the
continuum of services offered by the PruittHealth family of
providers that is now known as PruittHealth Care Management.
Since his appointment as Chief Executive Officer in 2002, Neil has
expanded and diversified PruittHealth, while
strengthening its financial structure and
significantly improving its service delivery
capabilities throughout the Southeast.
With 14 home health agencies, 29 hospice
agencies - including one inpatient hospice
facility, 89 related skilled nursing and
rehabilitation centers, five assisted living
communities, one independent living
community, six pharmacies, and one
medical supply company, the PruittHealth
family of providers offers rehabilitative,
home and community-based, and medical
supply services. During the past 12 years,
Neil has undertaken quality improvement
initiatives that have included renovation
projects within the skilled nursing and rehabilitation centers
and a customer service program that ensures all patients and
families are recognized and treated as respected and valued
clients.
He has placed special emphasis on creating a patient-centric
corporate culture which empowers partners (employees) to
deliver the highest possible quality of care through an upscale
consumer experience. Through these efforts and achievements,
Neil has successfully positioned PruittHealth as a leader in the
provision of post-acute and senior living services.
Neil is a devoted husband to his wife, Mebane, the proud father
of three wonderful children, and a strong proponent of family
values.
Is it any Wonder that the Peachtree Christian Hospice Board is Extremely Proud to Present
Neil L. Pruitt, Jr. The 2014 Scott Hudgens “Good and Faithful Servant” Award
For His Many Important Contributions to Improving National Health Care.

The Piedmont Bank was founded by a group of local business professionals who believe our community needs a bank that is committed to serving
the needs of businesses and residents of our community. Through the leadership of Monty Watson, CEO and Chairman, and the distinctive
services offered by The Piedmont Bank, they have successfully differentiated themselves from their competitors by the way their experienced and
professional staff and bankers deliver their services to the community. They hold to an old-fashioned and currently uncommon belief that banking
remains a people business, premised on personal relationships appropriate to a healthy banking relationship.

Physician of the Year
Dr. Hampton Groover, Peachtree Christian Hospice Medical Director
Recipient of the 2014 Gwinnett Chamber Healthcare Excellence Award
Physician of the Year / Specialist Category
Peachtree Christian Hospice is proud to announce that Dr. Hampton Groover is the recent recipient of the
2014 Gwinnett Chamber Healthcare Excellence Award as “Physician of the Year / Specialist Category.” Hampton
Groover, MD, has served as the Medical Director of Peachtree Christian Hospice since late 2003. Board certified in
Internal Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care, Dr. Groover is an expert at providing acute symptom management
and palliative care services to terminally ill patients. This expertise, coupled with an extraordinary bedside manner which includes spending unparalleled quality-time with patients and their families, consistently enables well informed,
end-of-life decisions.
“We have been very blessed to have Dr. Groover serve as our Medical Director for the past 11 years,” said Martha Todd,
President and Board Chair of Peachtree Christian Hospice. “He is an exceptional talent and his compassion for patients
and their families is the hallmark for which he and the entire PCH staff have become known. We could not be more
proud of him, and we are thrilled to see him receive this important recognition.”
The Gwinnett Chamber Healthcare Excellence Awards program recognizes excellence and innovation, and honors local healthcare organizations
and professionals who have made an impact on healthcare in the community through their concern for patients, their research and inventions, and
their management skills. This year’s awards were presented on December 4th before over 300 healthcare leaders throughout Gwinnett County at the
awards dinner at Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta.
About Dr. Groover
Dr. Groover’s background includes teaching and administration, as well as
practicing in the areas of internal medicine, geriatrics, hospice, long-term care,
wound care, and hospital-based palliative medicine. He has broad experience both
in the U.S. and overseas, and has been a speaker and educator in a wide array of
specialties: geriatrics, hospice, wound care, dementia, pain treatment, osteoporosis,
ethics, healthcare regulations, end-of-life issues, and psychotropic pharmacology
for neuro-behavioral symptoms in stroke, brain injury, and dementia.
With an extensive and accomplished career, Dr. Groover has served in varied
capacities: homecare and assisted-living physician; skilled nursing facility director;
long-term-acute-care hospital physician group director; and the founder and
director of Atlanta Medical Center’s Palliative Medicine Program. He has also
presided as chairman of the Ethics and Pain Management Committees at Atlanta
Medical Center. He is a wound consultant of 20 years, and is currently the Hospice
Peer-Reviewer for the Medicare and Medicaid Peer-Review Organization in Georgia.
After pre-med studies at the University of California, Irvine and the University of
Georgia, Dr. Groover attended the Medical College of Georgia. He then spent his internal medicine residency, including a year as Chief Resident, at
Atlanta Medical Center. During training, he was a logistics coordinator and a physician at Hippocrates Free Clinic in Atlanta. He continued forward to
become Geriatric and Palliative Section-Chief at Atlanta Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Training Program for 18 years, and the Clinical Internship
Director for Mercer Medical School’s Marriage & Family Counselor Program from 2010 to 2012. In addition, while serving as chairman and medical
director of a non-profit palliative training group, he oversaw training and certification of the 2005/2006 national Ethiopian nursing classes, and
directed training for Ethiopia’s first certified hospice in the city of Harrar.
Dr. Groover has received two American College of Physicians Scientific Achievement Awards for education and scientific presentations. And he was
an Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia through the Atlanta Medical Center Resident Training Program, where
he received the Annual Teaching Excellence Award for best clinical teacher. Dr. Groover was also awarded the Department of Defense Patriot Award
for civilian employer support to the National Guard and Reserve.
The Joy of
Planned Giving
and Receiving
WHAT IS PLANNED GIVING?
PLANNING POINTS
Planned giving is as simple as (1) making a charitable gift, and (2)
saving taxes. It establishes a way for a donor to provide for family
members while also remembering a charitable organization, such as
Peachtree Christian Hospice. Also, planned gifts often reduce taxes
for the donor.
• Speak to a Legal or Fiscal Advisor (notary, lawyer, financial planner,
accountant) for help in choosing the type of planned gift that meets
your needs and those of your family.
While it comes in many forms, a planned gift is a donation usually
resulting from financial, tax, or estate planning. Key components of a
planned gift are:
• It is a means by which anyone, of any financial means, may make a
considered choice about the disposition of their personal assets.
• It is immediate or deferred (even after the death of the donor).
• It reflects the philanthropic desires and objectives of the donor.
• It takes into consideration the donor’s motivation (personal, family, and fiscal).
Whatever the amount considered, your planned gift is important to
the beneficiary!
HOW DOES A PLANNED GIFT BENEFIT
PEACHTREE CHRISTIAN HOSPICE?
A planned gift provides concrete and lasting results, leaving a legacy
for the donor and providing long-term funding for Peachtree Christian
Hospice in order to administer the comfort and support services to
patients with life-limiting illnesses, as well as to their loved ones.
TYPES OF PLANNED GIFTS
• A Bequest in a Will or Trust is the easiest and most common way
of making a planned gift that can take the form of a set amount of
money or a percentage of an estate, a specific asset, or the special
naming of Peachtree Christian Hospice as a beneficiary.
• Gifts of Life Insurance and Retirement Accounts are equally as
easy to make by naming Peachtree Christian Hospice as a beneficiary.
• Gifts of Real Estate, Appreciated Property, and Tangible Personal
Property often allow the donor to avoid capital gains taxes while
gifting assets to Peachtree Christian Hospice.
• A Life Income Gift such as a pooled income fund, a charitable gift
annuity, or a charitable remainder trust, provides you or Peachtree
Christian Hospice, as the designated beneficiary, with income for life in
exchange for your gift.
• Read Your Will or Trust and Review the Beneficiary Designations
of your retirement accounts, as well as check on the beneficiaries and
current coverage amounts of your life insurance policies. If you want
to make changes to your will or trust, contact your lawyer, and also
your accountant and financial advisor, if appropriate. Your lawyer can
modify your will or trust or write a new one; the administrator of your
retirement plan can change beneficiary designations; your insurance
broker can make changes you want to your policies. They’re there to
help — together, you and they can get it done!
• Consider Gifts of Property, such as a collection of memorabilia or
shares of stock, and remember to amend those bequests if you have
recently sold or disposed of those items.
Always a Wise Change: Add a Gift to Peachtree Christian Hospice
When reviewing your estate plans, please include a bequest or other
gift to Peachtree Christian Hospice on your list of changes to be made.
A gift through your estate is an ideal way to support us and allows
the Hospice to keep on giving to others. It also provides maximum
flexibility in your planning and does not affect your assets or cash flow
during your lifetime.
Also, if you want to leave money to Peachtree Christian Hospice, it
may be wise to make the bequest from your IRA so the full value of the
gift is transferred tax-free upon your death (and your estate receives
a charitable deduction).

Peachtree Christian Hospice is committed to giving the best possible care to patients with a life-limiting illness, and to ensure they are
surrounded by kindness. This care is extended to their families and loved ones by a professional staff who lend emotional and spiritual
support as well. The PruittHealth Hospice Staff and the Peachtree Christian Hospice Board of Directors are a group of Christian men
and women dedicated to continuing this mission and maintaining a beautiful and loving place of rest, comfort and hope to individuals
at a most difficult time in their lives.
