I also appreciate the hours other Friends put in as they could, David Alexander has agreed to Chair the 2013 Book Sale and Dennis has agreed to be his chief “grunt” I will remain on the Book Sale Committee as FOL Treasurer. The FOL will need all the help YOU can offer to make the 2013 Sale the best yet! Jerry Porter Friends of the Library Board of Directors: President: Sherry Estes Vice President: Diana Fulks Treasurer: Jerry Porter Corresponding Secretary: Open Secretary: Open From the Director’s Desk… As this is being written, I am enjoying cool weather and beautiful scenery in Alaska. If you have never been here, I suggest you put a visit on your “bucket” list. Of course, Alaska residents mercilessly tease Texans. They say, “If Alaska were split in half, Texas would be the 3rd largest state in the Union.” I could spend the rest of this column, which is being written by my “ghost writer” ooohh i n g about Alaska, but back to business. Computer training is off to a good start. Attendance is strong at our Basic Computer classes with good attendance at our Internet and E-mail classes. We are still in the development stages of Microsoft Word and Excel and will get those subjects off the ground this fall. The classes are a “work-in -progress”, but we follow a course outline and then “liven it up” by answering participant’s questions. Our Computer Classes will take a summer break as we move into our Summer Reading Program. Many thanks are due our local Rotarian Club who has agreed to pick much of the cost of the program. The Program will run for three weeks prior to July 4th holidays, take a week off, then run for another three weeks after the 4th. Curriculum is varied and is designed to fit Kindergarten through High School aged youth. Please come by and see what’s going on! In addition to all the above, we still have a full Library services schedule, working on enhancing our internet connectivity and speed, guest tours, etc.. Have a great summer! Page 2 Friends News Friends Insider Information !! Sherry Estes was approved at the May General Membership Meeting to assume the role of President of The Friends of the Atlanta Public Library. She recently retired from the Texas Highway Department and was very involved in the 2012 Annual Book Sale, putting in several days and hours in, during, and after the sale. She brings a lot of new energy to the Friends and we all look forward to Publisher: Jerry Porter her help! They are available for research, but can NOT be checked out! The Cass County Gene- alogical Society will meet Tuesday, June 12th, 6:30 p.m., at the Horne Enterprise Building, Pinecrest Drive at South Louise, Atlanta, Texas. We will not have a guest speaker, per se, this month, as it is time for our annual outdoor fest. Rumor has that a Tennessee Great-Grandmother “impersonator” may appear and tell how she braved snow-fall five feet deep while walking uphill both ways to and from school in the Tennessee hills and give her story about how she got to Texas. This is yet to be confirmed! Members and guests are invited to bring a “picnic style” dish, preferably with food (i.e. not just the dish). According to one’s taste or desire, it may be packed in a picnic-style basket, but that is not an absolute requirement. One item that you MUST NOT bring The CCGS Board has been challenged to come up with something unique for the picnic….. But not to worry, it will not be something super exciting like bungee-cord jumping. Have a safe and happy Summer. Kathy are ants, especially the fire-ant kind! 2012 Annual Book Sale The 2012 Annual Book Sale is now history. We were blessed with good weather and good crowds. The Sale’s success was in large part due to the tireless efforts of the volunteers listed on page one. Randy Brockett also helped as much as he could within the confines of his health. Sale revenues were as follows: 1] Book Sales: $1,753.82 2] Sales tax collected: $ 144.68 3] Quilt Club Donation: $ 905.00 4] Thrivent Financial Grant $ 200.00 ——————————————————— Total Revenue $3,003.50 Expenses: 1] signs $ 325.00 2] Sales tax paid $ 144.68 ——————————————————— Net gain on Sale = $2,533.82 During the May General Membership Meeting, several concerns and changes were discussed. Subject to unknown factors that may exist in 2013, the location of sale items… within the Library…. (books, video, audio, etc) will change. A significant group contributing to the suc- cess of the sale was the donation and raffle by the Nimble Thimble Quilting Club and its matching grant from Thrivent Financial. Kenneth Watkin’s mother likewise donated two specialty rugs used as 2nd and 3rd prizes. Volunteers are the key to successful book sales. Will you stand up and be counted in 2013?
