At Baltimore Washington Medical Center, our mission is to provide the highest quality health care services to the communities we serve. We come to work with a shared goal to make a positive difference in your life and the lives of your family, friends and loved ones. Read what our patients are saying about the care they received at BWMC and the positive impact our physicians, nurses and staff have had on their lives. “ Never would I imagine that I would leave a hospital feeling as though I’d been in a four-star hotel. Each and every staff member whom I encountered, from checking in at the front desk, to ambulatory surgery, through the young lady who pushed my wheelchair out during discharge, treated me with the utmost respect and kindness. — Tresa W. Glen Burnie ” “ The impeccable care I received during my stay at BWMC made such a major surgery so easy for me. My intake nurse calmed my nerves with her great sense of humor and my doctor and his surgical staff were amazing. My room was beautiful and clean and my nurses and patient caregivers bent over backwards for me. — Robyn R. La Plata “ ” The doctors and staff in the emergency department and the critical care unit couldn’t have made me feel more at ease in what was a very trying time. The care I received during my stay was certainly a level of care that far exceeded anyone’s expectations of being a hospital patient. — Thomas R. But thanks to a host of new upgrades — from cutting-edge surgical technologies to more comfortable waiting rooms — Baltimore Washington Medical Center is making the experience as pleasant as it can possibly be. In one of its most extensive efforts to-date, a construction project is well under way that will add 29,255 square feet to the surgical suite when completed in September. Patients will experience the benefits of the new space when portions of it open this spring. Beyond the sheer size of the new suite, it’s what the space contains that will truly make a difference. Familiar Places and Faces Patients arriving for surgery will now check in to one of 33 new prep and recovery rooms. These 4 healthline Spring 2011 rooms are where surgeons greet the patient and his or her family, a nurse runs presurgical tests and an anesthesiologist sets up IV lines. After surgery, the patient returns to the same room for recovery, where he or she meets the same nurse as before. “Previously, patients were prepared for surgery in one area and then sent to a separate recovery room afterward with completely different staff,” says Sue Ward, vice president at BWMC. “With these new rooms, patients will feel more at ease when coming back to a familiar place and seeing a familiar face.” Many of the rooms have windows so patients can enjoy the sunshine or night sky while waiting for or recovering from a procedure. State-of-the-Art Surgical Suites The hospital’s three new operating rooms are designed to accommodate the most state-ofthe-art surgical technologies available. “Because of the new equipment, surgeons will be able to perform procedures they weren’t able to do before, such as removing tumors in the abdomen with minimally invasive techniques,” says Marshall Benjamin, MD, chief of surgery at BWMC. Thanks to a sophisticated spinal navigation system, surgeons can place hardware into a patient’s spine with greater accuracy, expansion update expansion update reducing the risk that they will need additional surgeries. Each new room is equipped with four 52-inch high-definition monitors, enabling the operating team to view the same area as the surgeon for greater efficiency. “The monitors, as well as wireless microphones, will also allow the surgeons to communicate with the pathology department, which is in another part of the hospital, without leaving the operating room,” Dr. Benjamin says. “If the surgeon is doing a cancer operation, for example, he or she can discuss the results of a tumor biopsy and look at the same slide right there in real-time with the pathologist while still in the operating room.” Serene Waiting Room The new waiting room, which opens in September, will double in size and is divided into spaces where family members can either Looking for a physician? BWMC Designated A Cardiac Interventional Center Baltimore Washington Medical Center is proud to announce that it recently received designation as a Cardiac Interventional Center (CIC) by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS). “Being designated as a CIC means that MIEMSS found our cardiac interventional program to be of the highest quality and will allow ambulances to continue to bring cardiac patients to BWMC for treatment,” says Jorge Ramirez, MD, chair of the departments of medicine and cardiology at BWMC. To receive designation, hospitals’ interventional cardiac programs 6 healthline Spring 2011 were thoroughly evaluated and received a site visit by MIEMSS staff. During the review, surveyors cited many strengths of BWMC’s program including: •• Dedicated, experienced staff •• Culture of quality patientcentric care •• Commitment by leadership with a team approach •• Good relationship with emergency medical services •• Received the Mission Lifeline Bronze Performance Achievement Award “This designation is validation that our team-focused interventional program provides high quality care,” says Samuel Yoon, MD, medical director of BWMC’s cardiac catheterization laboratory. “We have a strong team of physicians and staff who are dedicated to the program and truly care for their patients. When you and your doctor share the same priorities for managing your health, you’re more likely to develop a lasting relationship with a doctor you can trust. Ask the Right Questions When choosing a primary care physician, it’s important to find a practice or a doctor whose services, availability and interpersonal approach best fit the needs of you and your family. Are you looking for a doctor who is near your home, is board-certified or has extended business hours? Do you prefer a doctor who treats a wide variety of conditions, including those sometimes treated by specialists? Convenient Care, Same-Day Appointments To provide your family with accessible and convenient care, Bahador Momeni, MD, MBA, Eugenia Robertson, MD, and Jonathan McCoy, MD, of Arundel Physicians Associates, provide primary care in both Millersville and Hanover. Arundel Physicians Associates offers same-day appointments, including Saturdays and evening hours, and offers a wide range of medical services for youths and adults, such as echocardiograms, stress testing and skin procedures. “The best part about being a primary care physician is being able to build lasting one-on-one relationships with my patients and serving as their ‘jack of all trades,’” says Dr. Robertson. Electronic Health Record Enhances Communication To enhance your overall wellness and provide greater access to your doctors, Arundel Physicians Associates uses an electronic medical records system, Portfolio, to keep track of your medical history, note changes in your health and send prescriptions straight to your pharmacy. Patients also have access to log in to the electronic system, known as My Portfolio, so they can see their records, view lab results and even e-mail their doctors. “Portfolio enables us to easily and quickly communicate with our patients, allowing us to track their progress, answer questions, guide their recovery and stay on top of their preventive health,” says Dr. Momeni. When You Find the Right Doctor After selecting a primary care physician, it is important to get regular checkups in addition to sick visits. A yearly physical or consult with a doctor allows patients to develop a relationship with their physician and provide guidance for health maintenance and preventive measures, like mammograms, blood work and cancer screenings. “As primary care physicians, we know every patient is different, so providing the personal, individualized care from year to year is what makes our job exciting and rewarding,” says Dr. McCoy. Tate Cancer Center Expands with Latest Technology This fall, cancer patients at the Tate Cancer Center who need radiation therapy will have access to a new, state-of-the-art linear accelerator. The new Varian Medical Systems’ Trilogy® technology will complement the center’s current technology — the Calypso® 4D Localization System™ (or GPS for the Body®) and the da Vinci® S HD™ robotic surgery system. “Adding this highly advanced equipment to our already cutting-edge technology is exciting,” says radiation oncologist Mitch Oh, MD. “Our patients will benefit greatly. They can stay in the comfort of their community and have access to some of the best technology and an experienced team of specialists.” A linear accelerator is used to administer radiation therapy to treat many types of cancer. The machine offers more options for image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), which targets tumors with a high dose of radiation with minimal effects to the surrounding healthy tissue. SBRT is frequently used for cancers that cannot be treated with surgery, such as some early-stage lung cancers. “The new machine’s technology will also improve precision of radiation delivery and shorten daily treatment time,” explains radiation oncologist Wendla Citron, MD. The Tate Cancer Center, along with its affiliation with the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center, offers the resources of a renowned academic medical institution in a community hospital setting. The center offers comprehensive, coordinated care through a multidisciplinary team approach in which teams of specialists consult on each patient’s case and develop personalized treatment plans. The Tate Cancer Center is open and operating on a normal schedule during construction. For your convenience, free valet parking is available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. To reach the center, call 410-553-8100. 12 healthline Spring 2011 healthy lifestyles Healthy lifestyles Keeping Your Head in the Game The arrival of spring marks the beginning of another outdoor sports season. As athletes of all ages participate in their sport of choice, they are also exposed to several risks, one being injury. More athletes on the playing field means a greater possibility of one experiencing a sports-related injury, such as a concussion. A concussion is an injury to the brain that can cause a variety of symptoms, including memory loss, severe headaches and lack of ability to focus or concentrate. It is usually caused by a blow to the head and most often does not involve losing consciousness. Sports concussions can happen during drills, practices and games. Amiel W. Bethel, MD And, it is important to remember that injuries that occur during practice can be just as serious as those that occur during competition. “The best way to avoid the potentially serious complications that come with sports-related concussions is to prevent them altogether,” says Baltimore Washington Medical Center Neurosurgeon Amiel W. Bethel, MD. “That is why knowing proper technique such as tackling in football is so important, especially for younger athletes.” An estimated 10 percent of all athletes participating in contact sports suffer a concussion each season. Most athletes make a full recovery after a concussion and can return to play after being cleared by their physician. However, repeated concussions can cause permanent damage, and after several concussions, doctors may suggest choosing a different sport. While it is impossible to prevent an athlete from experiencing a concussion, wearing the proper equipment is essential. “One of the most important things to remember is to wear the proper equipment, especially headgear,” says Dr. Bethel. “This is particularly important if you are participating in contact sports like football, lacrosse or even baseball. Recent research has led to better development of athletic equipment, which has led to better protection for participants. We want athletes to have fun while participating in their favorite sports, but safety is always the top priority.” To make an appointment or have Dr. Bethel speak to your team about preventing concussions, call 410-553-8160.
