INTRODUCTION FOR 2016
Welcome to our 2016 catalogue, this year we have removed those varieties shown purely as text and
included many extra pictures for your enjoyment.
if you do not find what you are looking for we do recommend to you our website
www.qualitydaffodils.com there you will find many more varieties but even this will not show our full
collection which extends to over 2500 different named Daffodils and species.
Ron started the collection as a Hobby 40 years ago and includes those of his own breeding, many of
which have received high international accolades from Horticultural and Professional Societies, these
together with the very best of Breeders from all over the world now make what is reputed to be one of
the most comprehensive collections available today.
Remember if you do not see it, please ask as we may just have a few bulbs.
In addition for many years we have been rescuing and propagating the older Historical varieties that
have stood the test of time, they are far removed from the modern beauties we feature in the catalogue
but do have that natural almost ethereal beauty of their own, many are very rare and some are still only
a very few bulbs.
Our displays around the Country achieved many awards, and we were proud to have been awarded
Royal Horticultural Society Gold Medals at the London show and at Cardiff where we also were
awarded the Best Floral Display.
We wish to thank and acknowledge the photographic skills of ; Clive Nichols, Duncan Donald of Croft
16, Kirby Fong, Carlos Vanderveek, Ian Tyler, who have very kindly allowed us to use some of their
Pictures in this catalogue.
This year we shall be featuring displays at;
The RHS Rosemoor Gardens, Saturday and Sunday 12th /13th March.
Falmouth Spring Flower Show, Saturday and Sunday 19th/20th March.
The RHS London Plant Extravaganza, Friday and Saturday 1st/2nd April.
The Cornwall Garden Society Show at Boconnoc, Saturday and Sunday 2nd /3rd April.
The Southwest Daffodil Group Show at the National Trust garden Trelissick, Saturday and Sunday
9th/10th April.
The RHS Show at Bute Park Cardiff, 15th/16th/17th April.
We look forward to meeting many of you again at these events.
Best wishes for a beautiful and enjoyable Season
Ron, Maureen, Adrian and Sharon

New or First Time Introductions for 2016
We are pleased to include these new varieties, that have been greatly admired by visitors to our trial field when
under number, some are names that have been commissioned by other Daffodil enthusiasts and all have proved to
be strong and vigorous growers.
Burntwood 4Y-R [M]
40/60 (A.Harper)
A beautiful round flower
being only 78cm diameter
and of prefect show
proportions for the
intermediate size classes
lovely bright colours and a
strong grower that stand
well in the field and garden.
£7.50 each
Five Ashes 2W-W [M]
40/60 (N.Burr)
We have be growing this for
several years and has
impressed us with the
strength of growth and size of
flower 118cms, one of the
best from Noels breeding
£5.00 each 3 Bulbs for £12
Peppercorn 6YYW-WWY
[EM] 35/50cm
We first introduced several
years ago and have been
slowly increasing stock, it is a
bit slow but the flower speaks
for itself lovely soft shades
and full of grace.
£10 each
Folkestone Girl 11aY-R [M]
40/60 (J.Pesterfield)
We grow many varieties bred by
June, this is one of the
intermediate size flowers 80cms
that has stood out in the trials
this is perfect for showing and
has a strong stem and foliage.
£10 each
Raj 2O-O [M] 40/60
(C.Postle)
An unusual flower that opens
yellow and with an orange cup
and as the flower matures
develops a lovely shade of
orange in the perianth, only
70cms diameter is another per
intermediate size flower.
£5 each
Gylly Glow 6Y-O [E] 30/50cms
We introduced this last year for the Children of Falmouth, and feel
it fitting that it should be still amongst the newer varieties.
A good example of the cyclamineus section, a good stock permitted
this variety to be planted by the School Children of Falmouth as an
encouragement to plant bulbs for the 2015 show at the Gyllyngvase
Garden in Falmouth and hold a competition to name the flower,
“Gylly Glow” was selected from all the names submitted from all
the names sent in by the schools. 3 Bulbs for £7.50

Division 5 Triandrus Hybrids for exhibition and garden
These delightful varieties of Daffodil are the result of selective breeding
where the species n.triandrus has been introduced into its parentage;
the resulting plants often have 2 or 3 flowers on the stem, and are
amongst the ladies’ favourites in floral arrangements.
These from Division 5. and those of Division 6. are generally much
dwarfer in stature and are ideally suited to the garden or rockery. The
plants are hardy and quite resistant to the windier spot where the
conventional Daffodil often gets broken off.

Division 8 Tazetta Hybrids for exhibition and garden
Characteristics of Section Tazetta clearly evident: usually three to twenty flowers to a stout stem; perianth
segments spreading not reflexed; flowers usually fragrant.
These plants are the result of many years of breeding and can really be divided into two types. They are with the
exception of "Minnow" all quite big plants, some do have very tall stems and foliage. The first kind are more of the
true N.Tazetta species in form. As the species is generally found in warmer regions of Southern Europe and the
Mediterranean. They are somewhat tender and do require a hot dry summer period to perform at their best,
however they are well worth trying, when each stem could have up to 15 or 20 highly scented florets. The second
group or kind is the "Poetaz", these are slightly different in style and have fewer florets, and the scent is an
admixture of the N.Tazetta and that of the N.Poeticus from which these hybrids have been derived. It is the
poeticus part that makes these much hardier and withstand our winters as well as any other of daffodil.

Division 9 Poeticus Hybrids for exhibition and garden
These flowers have been commonly called the "Pheasants Eye" and indeed
they have been bred from the old species, however these varieties are far
superior in form and colour, and bloom when most other Daffodils have been
long finished. They are best picked young as the sun does affect the lovely
colours if left out. They are without exception all highly scented. The plants like
to be planted in good soil that never completely dries out, this helps to keep
them cool. Set the bulbs slightly deeper than normal and leave undisturbed.
New bulbs may take a season to settle, but are well worth their place in the
garden.

Division 13 The Species and Wild Forms Daffodils for exhibition and garden
I have been acquiring these for many years and have obtained much pleasure from them, particularly those grown
in the alpine house. The species always seems to resent being moved about, but once settled are a joy to see in
naturalized surroundings. Some are not available in very large quantities.
I believe them all to be true to name, but like many there seems to be some considerable variance of form; they
are however named as sent to me or have been grown from seed.

Historical Varieties
For many years it has been one of our passions to collect and preserve for the future Daffodils of bye gone years.
Today we have many of the varieties that are often seen in the old Gardens and around Churches and the
bordering hedges of the market gardens in the late 1800s and early 1900s, these and many others now form an
important part of our collection some stocks are still very small and some are still under assessment to ascertain
the correct name.
We are pleased to offer the varieties we list here, we believe to be true to name or have been confirmed by
other very knowledgeable enthusiasts.

PLANTING GUIDE FOR BULBS
DAFFODILS
Please note Daffodils are not edible
On arrival keep the bulbs dry and cool in an airy place until
ready to plant.
The species and short Tulips can be left in the ground from
year to year, but the Tall Hybrid Tulips do need to be lifted
annually.
The ideal aspect is in full sun or light shade; avoid the windy
aspect unless you are planting the dwarf or miniature
varieties.
HYACINTHS
Please note Hyacinths bulbs can sometimes cause irritation
to the skin,
All should be planted as soon as possible after receipt and
certainly before the end of October as bulbs can start to
deteriorate, the ground should be moisture retentive but
with good drainage, Daffodils do not like to be completely
water logged.
These bulbs must be kept cool and dry until ready to plant,
September to October is best, some bulbs are available as
prepared bulbs for forcing, this a special preparation given by
the producers and will flower before Christmas, but generally
bulbs are supplied in their natural state to flower early in the
spring.
Plant at a depth of 3 times height of the bulb this can be at
least 15 to 20 cm on top of the bulbs depending on the size
and variety and with a space equivalent to 2 or 3 Bulbs, they
can then be left for several years to develop, closer planting
is fine but you will need to lift and divide much more often.
Avoid fertilizers with a high Nitrogen content as this will
cause soft growth and encourage softness and susceptibility
to fungal disease, use a general fertilizer with high Potash,
spread this at planting time and give an annual top dressing in
the autumn.
After flowering remove the dead flower heads this prevent
seed setting and will direct the energy to the bulb, please let
the foliage die back naturally, as the leaves produce the
energy to produce next years bulb and flowers.
Daffodils in pots or containers can be a joy to see in the
Conservatory or Greenhouse, use a good quality bulb fibre
or compost and plant the bulbs only just below the surface,
do not allow the pots to dry out at any time, you will need to
keep a careful eye on them during the growing season, keep
the pots in a cool dark spot or outside in a sheltered spot,
bring them into the open once the bulbs are sprouting, avoid
too much heat as this can over force the bulb and could cause
the flower to abort.
Please ensure the pots are kept moist throughout the Winter
and most important protect them from freezing as the roots
and or the base plate of the bulb can separate and growth will
be stunted and the bulb die and rot away.
Once the flowers are over, you can transplant them direct
into the garden and allow them to die back naturally; they
may take a season to get back to full vigour.
TULIPS
Keep these dry and cool until you are ready to plant, the best
time to plant Tulips is during October and November in a well
drained situation with full light they will tolerate light shade.
Plant around the 10 to 12 cm deep and 10 to 12cm apart, if
you need to add fertilizer do this at planting time and again as
soon as the flowers have faded, high potash general fertilizer
is best.
Remove the seed head as soon as the flower has finished and
collect the fallen petals from the surrounding soil, allow the
foliage to die back completely then lift the bulbs and store in
a cool, dry and airy place.
78
They are ideal for planting in Bowls and Pots and must never
be allowed to become waterlogged, as this does cause the
bulbs to rot.
Planting in the garden choose a light sunny spot and set the
bulbs 12-15 cm deep and 20cm apart if potting you can plant
them almost touching for the best effect.
Top dress generously with a good high potash fertilizer, and
again during the growing season, Hyacinths need to be well
fed to perform at their best.
After flowering allow the foliage to die back completely bulbs
can be left in the ground for another year but it is best to lift
annually.
ALLIUMS
Keep bulbs dry and cool until ready to plant, they prefer an
open sunny aspect with rich well drained soil, plant 10-20 cm
deep the bigger bulbs deeper than the small varieties, top
dress with a good general high potash fertilizer when planting
and again each Autumn.
The foliage often turns brown at the tips at flowering this can
be trimmed and removed; generally leave the foliage to die
back naturally.
FRITILLARIA
Plant these as soon as possible in the Autumn 5-10 cms deep
and 15-20 cms apart in an Dappled light or slight shade, avoid
very hot and dry situations, a good rich but well drained soil
is best, but these bulbs should never become waterlogged as
they will rot
Top dress with a good general fertilizer at planting, and again
each autumn.
IRIS
Plant these as soon as possible in the Autumn in full sun and
a well drained situation, the dwarf varieties should be 10 cm
deep and 10 cm apart, they can be left undisturbed for best
results, top dress annually with a good general fertilizer.
MUSCARI
Keep cool and dry until ready to plant, choose a full sun to
light shade situation and well drained, plant 10-12 cm deep
and 10 cm apart top dress with a good general fertilizer
annually, they are best left undisturbed.

Horticultural Classification
Whether of wild or cultivated origin, once a selection has been distinguished by a cultivar name it should be assigned to Divisions 1 - 12. Daffodils
distinguished solely by botanical name should be assigned to Division 13.
Notes
1. The characteristics for Divisions 5 to 10 are given for guidance only; they are not all necessarily expected to be present in every
cultivar assigned to those divisions.
2. Divisions 12 and 13 are not illustrated owing to the wide variation in shape and size between the flowers involved.
DIVISION 1
TRUMPET DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
One flower to a stem; corona (trumpet) as
long as, or longer than the perianth segments
(petals)
DIVISION 2
LARGE-cUPPED DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
One flower to a stem; corona more than
one-third, but less than equal to the length of
the perianth.
DIVISION 3
SMALL-CUPPED DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
One flower to a stem; corona not more than
one-third the length of the perianth
segments.
DIVISION 4
DOUBLE DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
One or more flowers to a stem, with
doubling of the perianth segments or the
corona or both.
DIVISION 5
TRIANDRUS DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
Characteristics of N.Triandrus clearly evident:
usually two or more pendant flowers to a
stem; perianth segments reflexed.
DIVISION 6
CYCLAMINEUS DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
Characteristics of N.cyclamineus clearly
evident: one flower to a stem; perianth
segments significantly reflexed; flower at an
acute angle to the stem, with very short
pedicel (neck).
DIVISION 7
JONQUILLA AND APODANTHUS DAFFODIL
CULTIVARS
Characteristics of Sections Jonquilla or
Apodanthi clearly evident: one to five (rarely
eight) flowers to a stem; perianth segments
spreading or reflexed; corona cup-shaped,
funnel-shaped or flared, usually wider than
long; flowers usually fragrant.
DIVISION 8
TAZETTA DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
Characteristics of Section Tazetta clearly
evident: usually three to twenty flowers to a
stout stem; perianth segments spreading not
reflexed; flowers usually fragrant.
DIVISION 9
POETICUS DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
Characteristics of the N.poeticus group:
usually one flower to a stem; perianth
segments pure white; corona very short or
disc-shaped, usually with a green and/or yellow
centre and a red rim, but sometimes of a single
colour; flowers usually fragrant.
DIVISION 10
BULBOCODIUM DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
Characteristics of Section Bulbocodium clearly
evident: usually one flower to a stem; perianth
segments insignificant compared with the
dominant corona; anthers dorsified (ie
attached more or less centrally to the filament
and style usually curved.
DIVISION 11
SPLIT CORONA DAFFODIL CULTIVARS.
Corona split - usually for more than half its length
a). Collar Daffodils
Split-corona daffodils with the corona
segments opposite the perianth segments; the
corona segments usually in two whorls of
three.
b). Papillon Daffodils
Split-corona daffodils with the corona
segments alternate to the perianth segments
usually in a single whorl of six.
DIVISION 12 - OTHER DAFFODIL CULTIVARS
Daffodil cultivars which do not fit the definition of any other
division
