Why sit down and let the world pass you by while the outside is beckoning for you to seize opportunities to experience the beauty of our local parks. Clear Creek Metro Park is approximately anywhere from 5-15 minutes from most Amanda addresses. There you can hike, have a picnic, walk your dog or fish if you have a license. We know the couch can be tempting, especially after we all hibernate for the winter, but just remember that while you're sitting in front of your television, you are missing out on experiencing the vast world, in which beauty and wonder is at every turn. From the beauty of a tree to the deadly grace of a lynx, wherever you go, you are sure to find something to peak your interest. Clear Creek Metro Park is a fun and local place for people of all ages to go and the best part of it is that it's free! All you have to do is bring yourself, potentially some bug spray and then prepare to see something amazing. It is a 5300 acre playground, that adults and children can climb all over. It also boasts over 2200 species of plants and animals. It is also Ohio’s largest state nature preserve. You can also bring your pets so if you have a furry friend, bring them along for the enjoyment and exercise. Looking to canoe or kayak? You can do that too, bring your floaties and put your paddle in, the water's fine. All there is to do is walk and enjoy the things that nature has made and that no man can ever make. The slope of a hill, the colors of a butterfly, or the grace of a white tailed deer are some of the many things that man cannot reproduced in technology. Turn off your phone, and remember the most important thing to do when you visit the park is to have relax and fun – let the nature fill your soul and revive you. You can hear the sounds of birds chirping and the breeze blowing the leaves of the trees. Nature is calling; all you have to do is answer. Spade Nation The State Duals Written by: Landon Roberts The Amanda-Clearcreek varsity wrestling has had nothing but success this season. After clinching the Regional Championship, the Aces earned their spot in the state duals. State duals is when teams compete as a whole, to claim the state title. On Valentine's Day, the Aces took the mat against Mechanicsburg. The two teams were stacked and the level of competition was high. In the end, Mechanicsburg came out on top with a score of 57 to 19. The Aces scored points by means of two pins, one major decision and a decision. The pins were accomplished by Jordan Crist and Dylan Warga. The major decision was accomplished by Jordan Leasure. Mack Smith came up with a decision to finalize Amanda's points. The Aces have a very good consistency with state, as they have been there for the past three years in a row. Now the wrestlers go into the post-season, in hopes to make it to state once more. Jordan is still ranked first and is projected to win it all. The Aces have a bright future in the post-season. A Night of Farewells and Spineless Braves A-C's senior night was filled with tears, as our only senior Samantha Harvey was announced and walked across the court. Samantha Harvey was escorted by her parents and two sisters. She plays basketball and softball and is a varsity letterman in both sports. When asked what Samantha will remember about this season, she responded with, "What I will remember most about this basketball season is the Logan Elm game at home (senior night). I will always remember that game because Jaidee Collins got the winning shot with 2 seconds left on the clock. After the buzzer went off, the whole team dog piled on top of Jaidee. I can honestly say that was the first dog pile I've ever been in. It was the most exciting win I've ever experienced and one I'll never forget." During the game, A-C was tied with Logan Elm and they had the ball. With 2 seconds left on the clock, Jaidee stole the ball and ran the whole court. She was ahead of everyone else and threw the ball. The crowd went wild when the ball made it in the basket, giving Amanda-Clearcreek more points. This made A-C the winner of the game. It was very tense and when the timer ran out of time, the crowds filled the court, cheering. The dog pile consisted of A-C basketball players only. This was the only game in a while that actually had a decent sized student section. When the timer buzzed, the student section went absolutely crazy. They all jumped up and started cheering and chanting. It was incredible only winning by one point because of the guts of one player. We wish you the best Sam, and A-C will miss you. This really was a very memorable game for the parents and the players. NASCAR Returns - Closest Daytona 500 Finish in History Farewell to the Seniors Written by: Cheyenne Reid On February 12, the boys varsity basketball team played Hamilton Township. During that night, they introduced the two senior boys, Lance Clevenger and Jacob Lamb, then they introduced two senior cheerleaders, Sydney Stinson and Sarah Byrd. All four seniors said the aspect they will miss most about basketball or cheerleading is their friends. The game overall ended up being another loss for the boys, but this game was played with a lot of heart and determination for the seniors. The first three quarters, the Aces were in the lead the whole time. The team says the reason the Rangers were able to surpass them, was due to their loss of focus and energy as the game progressed. The Aces did not play as unified or focused in the fourth quarter. They ended up going home with a loss, but it was a night to remember. The checkered flag on the 57th Daytona 500 fell Sunday and it was the closest in the history of the event. For one of the few times, there was no rain, and there was plenty of racing. Chase Elliott took the pole for the race, driving the #24 car, which for the first time since the 90’s was not driven by Jeff Gordon - who has since retired and now commentates on Fox alongside Mike Joy and Darrell Waltrip. The race also was absent of Tony Stewart, who will be missing the first part of his swan song season due to a burst fracture in his back. This means that Brian Vickers had an opportunity to run the #14 car. The racing saw plenty of three-wide high speed action and a controlled chaos that is commonplace at Daytona. Coming to the white flag, Matt Kenseth led in the #20. By turn 3, his teammate Denny Hamlin made a move to the high side. Kenseth tried to block, opening the door for Martin Truex Jr. After a brief three wide in turn four, Kenseth slid borderline out of control and somehow saved the car from crashing. Hamlin and Truex Jr. were door to door: Hamlin – Truex – Hamlin - Truex. They were door slamming and at the checkered flag, Hamlin edged Truex by just a few inches, winning his first Daytona 500 in his 11th try. The Xfinity race saw Chase Elliott winning, edging Joey Logano by only about a car length. In the Truck Series, Johnny Sauter won under yellow, after the “big one” occurred on the last lap. The crash sent Christopher Bell’s #4 up and over, blowover style, it sent him into a dizzying nine barrels into turn one, but everyone was okay. This Daytona 500 weekend was the best one in a long time, as many would say. As the premier series make their way to Atlanta, we log another chapter into the 2016 NASCAR season. T-N-T Tunes, Novels, and Technology Movie Review “The Perfect Guy” Music Review Written by: Madeline Hutchinson The Meaning Behind the Music: Fables of Faubus The Division: PK Zones and Apocalypse, the Best of RPG’s Artist: Charles Mingus Genre: Jazz Release date: 1959 By: Mariah Plagemann This movie will do more than shock you, when an extraordinary guy turns into your worst nightmare. When Leah Vaughn played by Sanaa Lathan breaks up with her long time boyfriend, she begins to see Carter Duncan, played by Michael Ealy. Carter seems like the perfect gentleman, perfect boyfriend, etc., but perfect changes to petrifying when jealousy overtakes all of his actions. Leah then is in a constant battle to Tech Review Written by: Dakota Dillon "Fables of Faubus" is a song written by the late, great Charles Mingus, about the infamous Arkansas governor, Orval Faubus. Faubus's fame came about in 1957, when he used the National Guard to prevent African Americans from attending school. This event ended up taking the public by storm, as it was the first time that southern racism was televised for the entire country. Mingus' song was a direct protest against the Arkansas governor. It was first recorded in 1959, but only as an instrumental. The song was extremely controversial, so the Columbia record label refused to allow the lyrics to be included. In 1960, the song was finally recorded with the lyrics, but due to contractual complications with Columbia, the Candid version was titled "Original Faubus Fables". The vocals feature a call-and-response between Mingus and his drummer, Dannie Richmond. The lyrics include verses such as: "Why are they so sick and ridiculous?/ Two, four, six, eight/ They brainwash and teach you hate/." Mingus was not typically a political protester, as he put all of his effort into his music but he did use his voice to take a stand against unjust situations. He even stated, "I just write tunes and put political titles on them. Fables of Faubus was different though - I wrote that because I wanted to." I highly recommend listening to both the instrumental and lyric versions of this song. The Division is a game that takes place in a disease-ridden New York City. This disease is a Smallpox, which was passed around by money. The entire city is put on quarantine, and you are an agent that is trying to save the city. You can have skills that you can upgrade and also weapons such as sniper rifles, LMGs or shotguns. There is a PVP area called the Dark Zone, where you can get better weapons, armor and other objects. This game is only in Beta Test right now, but will come out shortly. This game is for Xbox one, Playstation 4, and PC. You cannot cross reference systems, this means you can’t play people on Xbox One if you have a Playstation 4. This game is for those who like GTA and other games. This game is rated RP and is a multiplayer RPG. 5/5 get away from him and keep herself along with the ones closest to her safe, but can she succeed? The film is heart pounding, suspenseful, and all too real. The roles are played flawlessly and the cast is spot on, also without seeing the previews, this film will flip you upside down and leave you wondering how and why? Definitely worth the time, would recommend watching it. 5/5 Stars Book Review Written by: Dakota Dillon Silas Marner : A Classic Silas Marner by George Elliot is a classic and an intriguing book about a hermit that has experienced a lot of life trauma due to his being different than others in society, yet he still has heart. It all began when as a child, Silas Marner was framed for a murder that his friend actually committed, and then he was thrown out of his community and was forced to move. He moved to a community where he could start fresh and no one knew him. While one day he was working at his weaving loom, a little girl came into his house. Unbeknownst to Silas, this little girl’s mother had just died. Once he knew this, he decided to take care of the girl. The next thing he knows, the entire town likes him and becomes friends to him. This book is heartwarming and touches the hearts of even the coldest hearted people. 5/5 The Random Ace Life Hacks Written by: Jessica Hall & Madeline Hutchinson Life Hacks.org The Health Detective Written by: Jade Cunningham Coronary Artery Disease The Creek Chic Written by: Katie Roark & Mariah Plagemann Makeup Masterpiece **Sorry boys, this article is only for the ladies; however, tune in to next month for both the boys and girls latest fashion trends.** For all you ladies wearing makeup out there, or even the ones wanting to wear makeup but don't know how…we have written an entire article to help you paint your masterpiece that sits on your shoulders - your face. Every girl is beautiful in her own way, but sometimes it's fun to enhance features, to make them even more extravagant than they already are. Therefore, these simple tips and tricks to help to bring out and pop out the best features. Contouring: Put a little bit of bronzer (or darker foundation) on the deepest parts of your face and lighter makeup on the highest point of your face. For example, I put bronzer underneath my cheekbones starting at my hairline and a highlighter on the highest part of my cheekbone (just below eye area, at top of cheek) to enhance them. You can do the same for your nose, forehead, lips, and even sometimes your collar bone. However, there is a certain way of applying your lowlights and highlights according to your face shape and also where you are applying it. Fortunately we have provided some pictures to help guide you through your journey of more sophisticated makeup. Always remember to be careful and limit yourself. Over doing your contouring can make your face look oddly proportioned or unnatural. Also, check your makeup in different types of lighting, such as a window, bathroom lighting, and fluorescent lighting, as it changes the appearance created. Obviously wearing makeup can take away from the natural aura of your face, but be sure to not overdo it, keep you looking like…you. Stay true to who you are, but don't be afraid to try new things. After all, that is the main reason for this column. To keep you on top of fashion and trends and help you enhance the true you. So ladies, get out there and experiment with your makeup! Ages that are usually affected the most are around 40-60 years old and older. This disease cannot be cured, but treatment may help. The most common symptoms to have would have to be a faster than normal heartbeat (heart palpatations) or shortness of breath. Self treatment can also help as well. Some take an anti-inflammatory such as aspirin (Ecotrin). Changing one’s lifestyle can also help prevent Coronary Artery Disease, for example: physical exercise, not smoking, weight loss and a eating low fat diet. Prescriptions that can be made for this disease are: blood thinners which are Clopidogrel (Plavik), channel blocker which is Amlodipine (Norvasc), heart medication that's nitroglycerin under the tongue (NitroQuick). There are medical procedures that can be used for Coronary Artery Disease such as: Coronary Artery bypass surgery, coronary stent, and angioplasty. Written by: Jade Cunningham, Anthony Briednebaugh, & Cassie Whaley Samantha Butterbaugh Having graduating in 2014, Samantha Butterbaugh, 19 going on 20, had a cumulative G.P.A of 4.2 after finishing her senior year. Sammie was involved in cross country, indoor and outdoor track, and was also inducted into National Honor Society. Not only this, but she was heavily active in church, including youth group activities and Sunday school. As she was growing up, she had always wanted to be a math teacher, however, somewhere along the way Sammie was injured while playing sports. During recovery, Sammie had to go through physical therapy. While in the process, Sammie's eyes were opened to what being a physical therapist was like, which hooked her into pursuing something within the spectrum of helping others recover. Today, Sammie is attending Cleveland State University, pursuing audiology and speech therapy because after beginning college, she realized that her dreams as a child weren't exactly what she wanted. She’s currently enrolled in a standard medical class, double majoring in Health Science and Speech and Hearing. One major hardship along the way was her study habits because she never really needed to study while in high school. A turning point for Sammie was receiving her lowest G.P.A of 3.6 as a high school student, which made her realize that studying is a must. Going into college though, a huge transformation was going from depending on her parents, to being fully independent. Sammie included, "There isn’t really a transition, more or less a, “Boom, you’re an adult.” The first couple weeks of high school are smooth and easy, but in college it’s an immediate jump and a fast pace to your first exam." Using skills she's learned in college, Sammie is currently an alternative media editor, editing text books for people with visual and auditory impairment, so that they're able to comprehend and learn the material they're studying. Always pushing her to do her best, despite their differences, her high school and college cross country coaches helped Sammie to reach her "life goals". Her role models were her parents who showed her what a good work ethic was like and showed her the light of God, which helped her transform her life. Currently, Sammie enjoys her job and is planning to go to Grad school in hopes of getting closer to her career. Sammie wants to get married, but first she wants to improve at cross country. All-in-all, Sammie has been a great leader for high school students to follow, and a great candidate for the AC Alumni column. Her best adviced to us is, “Just make sure to not take the easy way out and always be involved. Make sure to get good grades too, because it definitely helps in the long run.” Featured Aces Writer Mikayla Patterson Theatre Lara Peters ARTIST Written by: Madeline Hutchinson Shaleigh "Micah" Morris Q: "How long have you been involved in the AC Drama Club?" BREAKING NEWS Zika Virus Begins to Ravage the US Written by: Shelby Chapman & Kris Ryan This is NOT the next Ebola virus, but it is by no means good. The Zika virus has infected millions in Brazil and has started making its way to other countries. "So what is the big deal?" you ask. The pregnant women who have been infected with this have given to birth to many babies with birth defects as a result. The symptoms of this virus are a rash, red eyes, and joint pain in addition to a fever. This is a disease spread via mosquito bites and unprotected sexual activity. It is rare in the USA, and has relatively short infection period, but the effects on pregnant women is why this is such a big deal. There is no actual vaccine for this virus, aside from just trying to treat the fever and pains. The odds of this becoming a US pandemic are slim, but real. Stick to your guns and be sure to practice proper hygiene because it could lead to something other than Zika. Spring Fun I was rushing to get out of the house because I was running late for school, and I remembered that I didn't Snapchat my boyfriend back. At a stop sign, I decided to take a snap, but before that I was prettying up. As I was, I realized my friend was RIGHT BEHIND ME. She later tweeted about it and tagged me in it… I tried to dress up really nice one day in 8th grade. I decided to wear a peach colored dress. Little did I know though, that you could see right through it and see my butterfly underwear that I had on. It was the worst day I've ever had. Horoscopes Warning!
