Philips technology achieves breakthrough
in linear motors
Researchers at Philips Applied Technologies
have developed a highly innovative technique
that allows standard linear motors to simultaneously provide movement along two axes
rather than along a single axis. In equipment such
as the pick-and-place machines used to assemble electronic printed circuit boards, Philips’
patented NForcer Technology will allow designers to reduce the number of motors and electronic drive modules required as well as simplifying overall mechanical design. This will
result in significantly lower equipment cost. By
reducing the mass of moving parts, it will
also allow designers to produce designs that
achieve higher accelerations and operating
speeds.
World electric power equipment demand
to reach €70 billion in 2011
According to a recent study from The Freedonia Group, an industry market research firm, world
transmission and distribution electric power
equipment demand is forecasted to rise 4.4
percent per year through 2011 to €70 billion. The
largest regional markets for electric power
equipment will remain the Asia/Pacific region
together with North America and Western Europe. In 2011, China will account for a quarter
of the world market. The main product categories
- transformers, switchgear and switchboard apparatus - will register similar growth rates.
Bosch Rexroth acquires Oil Control
Bosch Rexroth has announced its acquisition
of Oil Control Limited in Coventry, UK, a manufacturer and distributor of hydraulic valves, power packs, pressure, flow, motion control valves
and electrical solenoid valves. Effective from
1st January 2007, Bosch Rexroth acquired 100%
of the share capital. Following a period of integration, the trade and business of Oil Control was
transferred to Bosch Rexroth with effect from
1st August 2007 and will operate as part of
the existing Hydraulics division of Bosch Rexroth
Limited. The existing Coventry based operation will be maintained and developed with
the goal of providing the highest level of service to customers
‘Grey market’ for bearings in the UK
Current estimates indicate that the grey market
for bearings accounts for between 12 and 15 percent of total UK bearing sales. Not only does a
growing grey market open up routes for more
counterfeit products to enter the market, it also puts end users and distributors at greater risk
of costly breakdowns, litigation and void warranties. As Des Pattinson from Schaeffler, points
out: “Although the offer price for the bearings may initially look attractive, buyers on the
grey market have to ask themselves what are the
potential hidden costs in terms of product liability and credibility with their customers if the
product turns out to be counterfeit and things
inevitably start to go wrong. These could, for example, be critical bearings on high value machinery in a manufacturing plant. The buyer therefore needs to take into account the cost of any
production downtime if the bearing fails early.”
Extech to be acquired by FLIR
Jerry Blakeley, President and owner of Extech
Instruments Corporation has announced that he
has entered into an agreement whereby the stock
of the company is to be acquired by FLIR Systems
Inc. Extech is a leading supplier of test and
measurement instruments in addition to portable
receipt printers and has an established distributor network covering 90 countries. Known
for an innovative approach to product development, Extech has made extensive use of infrared technology for both measurement and
for communication. Extech holds five patents incorporating IR in measurement instruments. It
was the first company to introduce a portable
printer with IrDA wireless communication.

The MIC01-CL controller can operate 200 nodes in the interface
modules. The internal GSM/GPRS
modem can send SMS- alarm
messages detected by the interface modules. There is also a
connector for microSD memory
card where the user can collect
trend data from various sources.

missing nodes detection, poor
Linet signal quality detection, over temperature protection, etc. The unit can connect up to 20 controllers together to create a large embedded system of networked controlers each controlling up to 200 interface modules. The MIC01-SC can contain 200 condition groups, 30 clock groups, 120 logic groups, 120
PID control groups, etc. Inputs and outputs of these groups
can exist under any controller in this system. With Ethernet base network and Linet subnetworks the user can
spread the system as wide as ever needed.

the voltage classes from 400 through 690V and is available with outputs between 200kW and 1050kW. Combined with frequency inverters they form a coordinated drive system. The N-compact is isolated from the baseplate by means of the oscillation elements at the base
of the motor which have excellent damping properties.
On the one hand, this makes the motor immune to external influences such as vibrations. On the other hand,
this makes the machine independent of the on-site
base plate.

The instruments are supplied with Niton Data Transfer
software, a suite of data management utilities that
allows users to produce certificates and reports, and monitor or operate the instrument remotely from a PC or
PDA. The software also enables users to document test
results, and guarantees the quality and integrity of
the data produced. The instruments operate on the principle of x-ray fluorescence.

the transport and conveyer technology, the
machine manufacturers require that the
transport elements are
cleaned at regular intervals. This work requires
an easy-to-handle lock
connection for the
opening and closing of
the often very long belts. With a system on the basis of
Alpha linear ZS belts, such locks can now be realised. The
characteristic lies in the handling and flexibility with regard to belt width, lock length and number of individual belt fingers, which are cut with a water jet. All
these parameters can be adjusted. Due to the simplicity of this connection, even small quantities can be
manufactured cost-effectively. In order to guarantee a
stability of the locks that is adjusted to the basic belt,
these connectors start from the timing profile AT 10 and
the smallest thread M3. Further measurements, e.g. profile H, T20 and AT20, are also available on request.
The MR03 radio transmission module is a designed to convert the
information transmission medium
from the cable transmission with RS232 and RS-485 into a wireless in the
radio channel, in the non-licensed
band 869.4 - 869.65MHz with an
output power of 500mW. The module finds applications in systems
where is no technical possibilities
to lay a wire to connect devices
in a wire system. In such a case, it
is applied as a bridge which partially conducts the transmission in the
radio way. The operation range
of the module is 1.5 km in average
and depends on the terrain configuration and the kind
of applied antenna. Accessible working modes allow to
the individual communication of a pair of modules
(point-point mode) and the broadcasting communication (point - many point mode). Changes of parameters,
necessary to a correct module work, are carried out by
means of the configuration program.

The CPV10 Ex-i, is an intrinsically safe version
of the CPV10 valve terminal designed specifically
for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, in
accordance with ATEX
equipment category 2
(Gas Zone 1). It can be
mounted in close proximity to the pneumatic actuators and drives that it controls,
resulting in short tubing lengths, which are essential for
efficient short cycle time operation. It is particularly suitable for automation systems employing decentralised
control schemes. The valve terminal can accommodate
up to sixteen 3/2-way valves, and offers a wide variety
of valve functions. All the valves feature solenoid actuators to ensure that only low voltages and energy levels can occur; they are rated for 0 to 10bar operating
pressure and can handle flow rates as high as 400
litres/minute. The valve terminal uses a novel pneumatic multi-plate connector, which simplifies installation in
IP65-rated control cabinets.

double latching MGPU 019
will withstand a side load
of over 22kg in the locked
position. The MGPU 019
comprises a permanent magnet surrounded by two
coils with a locking pin projecting from each end of the
armature. It operates by momentarily energising one
coil to engage the pin and then energising the second
coil to reverse the process. Power consumption is extremely low as the permanent magnet provides the latching
effect, which holds the armature at either end of the
stroke. Installation and connection has been simplified through the MGPU 019’s standard Molex electrical
socket being moulded into the frame of the solenoid,
which has also been designed to provide choice of
mounting arrangements. The plug locks in place thereby speeding assembly time and preventing unintentional disconnection.
The InSpec blender
controller is a new 3term PID controller,
launched to provide
solution for twostream controlled rate
or 'wildstream' blending and analyzer trim
applications. Designed
to optimise blending performance, it has a simple user
interface with operator prompting and 'hot-keys' to display key parameters or alarms. A display has 12 configurable scrolling front display items including indicators
that can be configured to show any variables during the
blend process. Twenty user-defined recipes can be configured and stored for instant recall and recipes may also be entered on demand. Batch delivery optimisation
includes a self-tuning algorithm to 'learn' the blender
piping configuration and ensure accurate blended
batch quality. This instrument is a closed loop ratio
controller offered with a series of factory set or retroactivated 'options' to enhance functionality for different system types and application complexities.

The new
Han 70 A
module
accommodates two
power
contacts
with axial
screw termination,
and is rated for voltages of up to 1000V at 70A. Although this module has a high electrical power rating,
it is only half the size of the existing 100A module. The
axial screw terminal is suitable for wires from 6 to 22 mm2
(AWG 8 to 4). Termination requires no special tools: a 2.5mm
hexagonal key is all that is required to make a safe and
reliable electrical connection. The new module also features finger-safe male contacts protected by an additional plastic cap. This enables safe connection solutions in
applications where the power could be present on both
the male and female side of the connector. It fits into a
highly flexible range which allows users to assemble

The LD-100 detector is a portable device detecting leaks in all types of gas
installations (natural gas, LPG, etc.).
It is used to inspect in-house gas installations, as well as gas installations in multiple industrial facilities. Flexible probe

Bionics is the application of methods and systems found in nature to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology. This transfer of technology between lifeforms and synthetic constructs is seen as increasingly desirable since evolutionary pressure typically forces natural systems to become highly optimised and efficient.

An engineered manta ray
Analysis of various types of movement
through water has established that rays are
perfectionists in submarine “flight” and
gliding. The up-and-down motion of their
flanks in water closely resembles the flapping of a bird's wings in the air. This wavelike movement perfectly combines maximum
propulsion with minimum energy consumption. The streamlined form lends
graceful movement to the manta ray, in particular, and makes it a veritable submarine acrobat.
Aqua_ray is a remote-controlled fish with a water-hydraulic drive unit: its form and kinematics are modelled on the movement patterns of the manta ray. Bionic fluidic muscles
serve as actuators. These largely consist of hollow elastomer tubes with integrated woven aramide fibres. When the fluidic muscle is filled with air or water, its diameter increases and it contracts longitudinally, giving rise to smoothly flowing elastic movement.

propulsion and control unit. The Fin Ray Effect is a construction that is derived from the
functional anatomy of a fish's fin and imitates almost perfectly the mode of propulsion
executed by the natural model.

tion comprising a helium-filled ballonet and a flapping-wing drive mechanism. Its extremely light design enables it to almost hover in the air by means of the buoyant force
of the helium ballonet, floating through a sea of air just as the manta ray does in water.
The propulsion is effected by a flapping wing mechanism. The wing module, which
can be moved up and down by a servo drive unit, has a structure that makes use of
the Fin Ray Effect described above. This structure consists of two alternating pressure
and tension flanks flexibly connected by ribs. When one flank is subjected to pressure,
the geometrical structure automatically bends in the direction opposed to the force
applied. A servo drive unit pulls on the two flanks longitudinally in alternation, thus
moving the wing module up and down.
The structure is supplemented by a torsionally resistant central spar developed by Rainer Mugrauer. Mounted to its exterior end is a servo drive unit that enables the flapping wing to rotate about its transverse axis, so that Air_ray can fly backwards. The
pitch elevator is also designed as a Fin Ray structure driven by a servo unit. The Fin
Ray Effect is now also being used for the first time in automation: with the bionic material gate from Festo, seven different components can be simultaneously sorted in
one single operation.
Airic’s_arm
How can technology be used to contrive a
movement device which comes as close as possible to the human model in terms of overall
concept, technical design and bionics?
Airic’s_arm is a robot arm with artificial bones
and muscles. A total of 30 muscles move the
bone structure which, as with our own arms,
consists of ulna and radius, metacarpal and finger bones, a shoulder joint and a shoulder bon.
The bones were designed on computer and
are grown in a three-dimensional polyamide
structure using a state-of-the-art laser sintering process. The muscles are already
found in industry al applications under the name of fluidic muscles. When a fluidic
muscle is filled with compressed air, its diameter increases and it is simultaneously shortened.
This artificial muscle has immense starting power, and its dynamic behaviour is similar to that of a human muscle. Its greatest advantage over its human counterpart is
that when contracted, it requires no further supply of energy. A weight once lifted
can thus be held in any position indefinitely by Airic’s arm. With this technology, the
forces applied and the muscle's rigidity can be precisely metered. This is effected with
very small, highly innovative proportional valves based on piezo technology. The tensile forces and the contraction of the individual muscles are measured by pressure and
length sensors. A mechatronic unit then regulates the pressure distribution within the
system, allowing movements that closely approach the action of human muscles in
terms of kinematics, rapidity, force, but also refinement.
Coordinating all these actuators is only possible using the most up-to- date mechatronic systems and software available. Movements which we humans carry out subconsciously, or even in a reflex action, still require a great amount of effort using computer-supported control and regulation. Extending the sensory range of Airic’s arm,
e.g. by means of cameras or tactile perception elements, would be conceivable in the
future along with further developments in designing a back, hip, neck etc.
Pure mechatronics: Sky_liner and Airmotion_ride
Flying a kite calls for a great deal of skill. With the Sky_liner project, Festo is demonstrating that a kite can be controlled fully automatically by means of mechatronics,
and is thereby forging a link to its key field of competence: automation by means of
flowing air.
Sky_liner comprises a configuration
of two dual-line kites, each controlled by a mechatronic unit.
These kites are thus no longer
flown by hand, but automatically operated from indoors with
servo motors and artificial wind.
Each line is coupled to a DMSP
pneumatic muscle from Festo,
which contracts and thus "shortens" the line to counteract this
movement of the kite. The bionic construction Airmotion_ride enables highly diverse driving and flight simulations to be realised in combination
with mechatronic systems. A parallel-kinetic hexapod structure with six fluidic muscles creates a realistic impression of driving and flying.

For two decades, the term nanotechnology has been primarily associated with an R&D race spanning the public and private sectors. But nanotech is now shifting from discovery to
commercialization, creating sustained competitive advantage for companies. This transition – and a path for businesses and investors to harness it – is the focus of Lux Research’s

Key findings from the study’s content include: Nanotechnology is completing a 20-year transition from lab to market,
matching a historical pattern previously seen in fields like
plastics and biotech. More than €33 billion in products sold

Nasdaq trough was 0.36%. Within that group, however, select individual companies showed annualized increases of

Controllers (RTSC) can control up to four individual
motors simultaneously.
Based on the C166S V2
core, the high-performance RTSC products integrate a microcontroller (MCU) that combines the
strengths of a 16-bit C166 core for the peripheral control with the computing power of a digital signal
processor (DSP). Operating at 80MHz and one cycle
per instruction, all devices deliver 80MIPS. Flash capacity is up to 768 kilobytes (KB). Existing software
can be easily reused with this new family. The XE166 family integrates an embedded voltage regulator, various
clock sources, brown-out detection and watchdog. The
powerful peripheral set includes up to four capture compare units to drive an electrical motor, two synchronizable analog-to-digital converters and a wide range of
interface options. To improve safe application operations,
an effective error-correction coding (ECC) technology
has been implemented.
The QM spindle series consists of over 50 models divided into four families covering a range of tightening
torques from 3 to 2,500Nm. Their modular configuration enables users to select the required torque output,
type of drive (square drive size, output length) and mounting arrangement. The spindles are made up of two
main sections, the mechanical section (motor, gearbox, and torque transducer) and the electronic pod
(tool communication board). The latter is protected
from vibration, and can be positioned separately from
the spindle body to suit the space available for the
application. The QM spindle range can be piloted by Insight IC Module or Display controllers, whatever their
torque ranges. Thanks to the ICS Multisync software, users

magnetic sensing delivers reliability in applications too

The Framo Morat MINI
linear actuator uses coaxial motor to achieve the
required stroke in minimum space. The units are
manufactured in stainless steel, IP65 rated, ATEX
95 explosion-proof certified. The range of electric motor driven actuators comprises five basic sizes with body diameters range from
60 to 128mm. A choice of 3-phase, single-phase AC or
24V DC drive motors are available. Stroke lengths range
from 100 to 800mm, stroke speeds between 0.5 and
181mm/s and stroke force of up 26,000N. A number of
features ensure reliable operation even in extreme
conditions such as heat, dust and moisture. These include
a thermally protected motor, life time lubrication and
integral safety switches. This reliability is complemented by economical operation, low maintenance and a long
service life. It can be specified with a choice of mounting and connecting arrangements and is easily interfaced
with an existing controller. Special stroke lengths and
other custom features are available.

The TranSphere Wireless solution reduces

As an alternative, two CF memory modules or one CF

dual optics system allowing a quick, easy yet reliable measurement down to very low dew points. Together with
the inbuilt sample gas temperature compensation, the
features add up to a highly sensitive, responsive yet stable system. The device is available with a viewing microscope enabling the user to inspect the mirror surface
during the measurement process. The meter uses a
modern Dynamic Contamination Correction System
(DCC) to achieve optimum measurement performance
at all times. This system re-balances the optics to compensate for any reduction in the light intensity due to
contamination of the components in the optical path.
The Digital-IO Extender Set
transmits up to four switching signals over a two-conductor multimode glass fiber
optic cable. Already routed
glass fiber segments can be
easily used for signal transmission. Transmission is fully independent of other data and network infrastructures and features signal
transit times well under a
millisecond. A transmission
distance of up to 3.8 km is possible depending on the
glass fiber type. Because of their low bandwidth and the
large voltage swing, digital I/O signals are inherently less
sensitive to external noise than for example serial data signals. Nevertheless, some applications demand a transmission process that is completely resistant to noise
disturbances impinging on the transmission line. Glass
fiber cables meet these requirements, while also offering the benefit of galvanic isolation to any level between
the connected components.

CES-AR-C makes it
possible to monitor
several safety guards
at once. Up to 20 devices can be included
in one switch chain.
Consequently, the
safety switch is particularly suitable for systems in which a large number of
safety guards need to be monitored, but it can also be
used as a very compact individual switch. The small
housing accommodates a read head and an evaluation
unit. When used in a switch chain, the individual switches are connected with each other by means of plug connectors. The end of the chain is connected to a safety
relay or a safe PLC, for example. The CES-AR-C features two safety outputs and pulsed signals for integrated short circuit monitoring. Two LEDs indicate the system status and facilitate diagnosis. The switch can be

Brembo is a well-known brand in the field of components for the automotive industry worldwide. Following a recent production reorganization plan, the company decided to build a new factory in Curno, near Bergamo, a 15,000m2 building. Here, some production units
are located: the departments for mechanical machining and for the assembly of braking systems and wheels
for motorbikes, and racing team for the development
and production of brakes for cars and motorbikes,
hosting mechanical operations, quality controls, assembly, testing and experimentation units.
Compressed air distribution
In the new building, the network of parallel distribution lines for compressed air and lubricating-cooling oil
serving the machining centres at Brembo has been
created using the modular piping systems AP and HBS
by Teseo.
The compressor room is equipped with two 132kVA screw
machines and a filtering and drying system. Each machine delivers 22,860 l/min at 7.3 bar operating pressure.
The plant equipped with Teseo products is connected
to the outlet pipe of this room, and through a 4-inch
feeding column (consisting of a HBS 110 pipe), flows into the main circuit, also based on pipes with the same
diameter. The main circuit runs along the walls of the
entire building for a total length of 500m. Several
cross lines with 2” diameter (made of HBS 50 pipes) intersect with the main circuit, simplifying the connection
to machines. These secondary lines have a total extension of 1,000m and are hanging from the ceiling supported by steel ropes.

“The plant was installed in different stages during the
transfer of equipment from the old to the new production site,” says Giorgi. “We needed to commission the
NC working center very quickly as soon as they reached
the new destination, and we found a perfect solution
with Teseo’s HBS and AP pipes.” Once a machine was
positioned, the engineers drilled holes into the distribution lines, pre-assembled the drop columns at ground
level, and finally connected to the network with suitable connection plates. “Each extension, addition of extraction points or modification for the installation of new
machines can be carried out very quickly, with consequent
reduction of machine downtime and lower labour
costs,” underlines Giorgi.
A traditional plant made of iron, even if zinc-plated, is
subject to oxidization and rusting, so that you have to
treat air with filters. Due to the poor quality of circulating air, it is necessary to replace filter cartridges and
to carry out frequent maintenance. “An aluminium
plant is not subject to oxidization caused by air condensate, i.e. rust, so it does not contaminate air flowing
through the plant, reducing costs deriving from this factor,” adds Piergiorgio Giorgi. Thanks to the high quality of distributed air, all equipment supplied by the
plant benefit from an extension of operating life with
constant performance over time.
Higher yield, lower waste
An extruded aluminium pipe has a very smooth internal surface, which ensures higher flow rates and lower load loss as compared to traditional galvanized iron
pipes. Some tests have shown 30% higher rates in HBS
pipes as compared to a standard iron pipe with the same
internal diameter. In practice, this translates into higher flow rates with identical power consumption for
the generation of compressed air, or if you prefer, lower power consumption to achieve the same performance
as iron piping.
The patented coupling system with O-ring seals for
the AP and HBS fittings ensures perfect tightness and
the dramatic reduction of plant leaks. “This feature allows reducing air consumption related to leaks, which
is common in traditional plants with threaded couplings,” concludes Giorgi. A market survey within the
European Union reveals that this is a key issue for industrial air distribution plants to optimize air generation costs.
Inside the building, compressed air is used in different
ways, first of all to feed machining centres, where it is
required to clean the tool-holding spindle and to operate different machine units. This requires high flow
rates in short time to remove metal chips and dirt, in order to ensure proper assembly and high-quality workpiece machining. Compressed air is also used to supply
the tools for workpiece deburring. The latter are highspeed grinding wheels supplied with compressed air, for
which it is essential to have clean fluid and no rust or
oxide. Finally, compressed air is necessary for the testing benches of calipers, requiring a high flow of clean
air to ensure the optimal operation of pneumatic devices like cylinders and valves.

A new ESFP (Electrical Small form Factor Pluggable) device creates a programmable electrical interface, STM1
of a pluggable type,
that is completely interchangeable with
similar optical devices. The compact module includes a CMI coder and decoder, a circuit for automatic synchronisation, a circuit
giving protection from ESD electrostatic discharges
and an EEPROM memory for the identification and
the features of the module. In addition to the SDH-level line functionalities (bit rate at 155,520Mbps), the new
transceiver also allows the integration of a series of I/O
applications. It is economical both for applications on
mixed optical/electrical boards and also on boards
where a high number (>8) of SDH or PDH channels
are required. In addition to handling the flow of data,
a set of reliable functionalities monitors the signals
and sensing of alarms (LOS: Loss of Signal).

to activate small and big magnetic surfaces.

with a high power anti-static EMC filter,

waterproof motors are constructed with
a special resin material which seals the motor, maintaining the internal electrical parts
completely waterproof, even in presence of chemical substances, like detergents. The waterproof motors, ranging
from 0.37 to 15kW and from size 71 to 132,
represent a good solution to high degree
of rain and humidity situations. The tropicalization and painting of the rotor
shields it from the risk of oxide formation.
A wide range of air-reservoirs for pneumatic circuits manufactured according
to European Directive 97/23/CE, can be supplied, on request, with the Declaration of
Conformity to Directive ATEX 94/9/CE,

The family of high temperature pressure transmitters
utilize a new and innovative sensing technology. The high
temperature capability makes this type of transmitter
ideal for the plastics industry. The product family consists of two series: the I Series for extrusion applications
and J series for injection molding applications. The
unique sensor materials and packaging construction yields
a device which can perform accurately and reliably in
processes up to 350°C. The modular structure eases installation and allows the user to locate the electronics
in the most practical location.
These connectors have been
designed with
a spring mechanism so that
they can be
blocked inside
the plastic housing of the connectors, in line
with the standard DIN 41612 Type M. The coupling between male and
female inserts, therefore, takes place automatically by
means of the mating of the plastic connectors. It is
possible to carry out multiple matings, up to 6 inserts
at the same time. Different straight or right-angled modules are available, suitable for the most common types
of cable and they can be assembled with the normal tooling in use for connectors of this series. Other versions
foresee an exit with attachment to the printed circuit
and can be welded at the same time as the terminals
of the DIN connectors. The interface of these inserts is
standardised.

Realimp measures loop impedance (Zg) in a precise, reliable and repetitive way. The estimated short circuit current, processed and displayed by the instrument, verifies the suitability of the relevant protection device
against overcurrent. In order to get the best accuracy,
the instrument has a high test current (200A max) with
a 0.1mΩ resolution. An important feature of Realimp
is the forced ventilation system of the internal resistors
used to generate the test current, necessary to obtain
a better measurement stability.

The Montrac system, implemented by Triom, transports vehicle light components
from the warehouse to different processing stations. Three tracks, some with
bypasses, provide the fast transfer of parts. In the warehouse, different components are laid onto the shuttles of the Montrac system. Each shuttle is identified by a unique ID number which allows defining the processing stages
downstream and the route that each Shuttle will follow through the plant.
Montrac is a transport system with a modular concept. The self-moving shuttles run along the maintenance-free monorail track with speeds of up to

quire pneumatic operation. Power is supplied directly through the rails, while
communication between shuttle and rail occurs via infrared. The Montrac
line implemented in the Triom factory is 250m long, with 18 shuttles. It transports loads weighing up to approx. 8 kg. The design cycle took 4 weeks, the
installation took 10 days.
A key factor for the selection of the Montrac system was its excellent antistatic property which, besides reducing wear dramatically, protects the parts
from dust. This way, Triom could eliminate the use of dust-repelling guns. The
decision was based on two key factors: the antistatic properties of Montrac and
the system availability of above 95%. As an effect, the company has reduced
scraps by 80% and achieved return on investment in just eleven months.
For Triom, it was also important to avoid any risk in case the operators should
touch the monorail or the shuttles: Montrac is totally safe in this aspect, as it
operates at low voltage. Another asset of the Montrac system is its low power consumption, as much as 20 times less than equivalent systems.
