Developing Leaders
to Strengthen Our Community
2014-2015 YEARBOOK
Letter from the Executive Director
Dear Leadership Jacksonville alumni and friends,
The cover of our 2014-15 Yearbook displays art from Jacksonville’s gallery of Art in Public Places. Each piece adds
to the cultural landscape of our city and those pictured are scattered through unexpected places: the Riverwalk
in Riverside, Jacksonville Public Library Downtown Branch, the Baseball Grounds, the Jacksonville Children’s
Commission building in the eastside, and a Police Athletic League center on the northside. Our public art is
diverse and helps us to establish a visual identity for Jacksonville. The art builds a sense of pride in each community.
Our art is an asset. During my first year as your executive director I have seen clearly that one of our greatest
community assets is the LJ alumni body. Like the Art in Public Places you are diverse. You are scattered in
unexpected places. The work that you do as leaders in your communities makes them better because of your
leadership, vision and action. With support from what you have received in your Leadership Jacksonville programs,
you are out in the community doing incredible things and you continue to give back by supporting the LJ programs
that keep the pipeline of new leaders coming.
Thank you for all of the good that you do for your many communities – you are an asset and you make LJ an
ever-better organization. Together we are Developing Leaders to Strengthen our Community.

Letter from the Board President
Since our founding in 1976, thirty-seven presidents have guided
Leadership Jacksonville to become an organization of over
3,500 adult, college and high school graduates who are actively
improving the quality of life in their communities. As our 38th
president, I am honored to lead an organization made strong
through the work of our alumni and brightened each year by the contributions of new
graduates.
This yearbook highlights Leadership Jacksonville’s many impactful programs. Each
year our programs are reviewed and improved so they continue to meet leadership
needs in Northeast Florida. When you see the participants and look at the program
calendars, you are assured that we continue to attract and prepare current and future
community trustees.
A testament to Leadership Jacksonville’s mantra of continuous improvement is the now
five-part Jacksonville Legacy Series. If you haven’t already, visit our website and view
any of the award-winning series segments including the soon to be added sixth episode
featuring former Mayor Jake Godbold.
In addition to producing our many programs and events, the staff and 2014-2015
Board of Directors are focused on three key areas: creating a forward-thinking
Strategic Plan, finding new and engaging ways to maintain a close connection with our
Alumni—all while ensuring we Reach into our diverse community to ensure all areas
are represented. We welcome your participation, feedback and support as Leadership
Jacksonville continues to strengthen leadership in Northeast Florida.

Jacksonville Legacy Series
In this ongoing video series, community leaders share insights into
their passions, challenges and inspirations—and the legacies they
leave behind. Each installment is a treasure, rich with historical
detail and context, for future generations to discover.
The most recent additions to this growing library focus on the lives
and work of Robert Shircliff and Delores Barr Weaver. Previous
participants have included Dr. Frances Bartlett Kinne, Alton
Wendell Yates and the Honorable Frederick H. Schultz. As an
ongoing project, the Jacksonville Legacy Series requires long-term
funding from individual and corporate sponsors.

Produced by Lindsey Films, the videos are edited for airing on WJCT-TV and are available for viewing on both Leadership
Jacksonville and the station’s websites. Longer unedited clips by topic are also archived on our website, leadershipjax.org, and on
our YouTube channel.

Leadership Jacksonville
Class of 2015
From its opening reception in May to the closing
retreat a year later, Leadership Jacksonville (LJ)
engages and strengthens Northeast Florida leaders.
Along the way, participants explore the complex
and interconnected dynamics of urban society, with
emphasis on major areas of community concern. The
program develops a network of forward-thinking
community trustees with the knowledge and insight to
make a difference.
LJ proactively seeks applicants who represent the
broadest possible cross-section of the community in
terms of gender, race, age, income level, occupation and
other factors. Through a highly competitive selection
process, teams of LJ alumni evaluate applicants for
a combination of key criteria—including leadership
skills, community involvement and a commitment to
invest the time and energy required to complete the
program.
Since 1977, experienced alumni and staff members,
skilled in adult development activities and group
facilitation, have crafted the LJ program. Program
Coordinator Barbara Moulding participates in
planning and provides staff support for the Leadership
Development Team and Selection Committee.

CLASS OF 2014
Youth Leadership Jacksonville Class XXV
Initiated in 1989, Youth Leadership Jacksonville (YLJ) prepares
outstanding high school juniors to take their places as responsible, ethical
leaders committed to active community involvement. The year-long
program accepts approximately 56 students each year from accredited
participating high schools in Baker, Clay, Duval and St. Johns counties.
Through an ambitious schedule of retreats and focused full-day
programs, YLJ gives students a thorough grounding in the workings of
government, criminal justice, human services, diversity, arts and business
in Northeast Florida. Students have opportunities to interact with
leaders and learn methods and skills for addressing ongoing community
issues. Program goals: to develop mutual trust and respect with their
peers throughout the region, build community awareness, understand
contemporary issues and develop effective leadership styles.
School principals may submit up to six candidate applications each year.
Students apply in their sophomore year and are interviewed by teams
of Leadership Jacksonville alumni. Applicants demonstrate excellence
in a variety of ways including student government, academics, athletics,
the arts, youth organizations and community service. YLJ participants
are chosen with specific emphasis on creating classes that reflect a broad
cross section of the community in terms of gender, race, culture, schools,
neighborhoods and experiences.
Youth Leadership Jacksonville XXIII
Scholarship Recipients
Youth Leadership Jacksonville (YLJ) alumni are fortunate to have access to
a robust scholarship program that adds dimension to their YLJ experience.
Thanks to the Meninak Club of Jacksonville and The Community
Foundation for Northeast Florida, YLJ alumni have opportunities to
compete each year for six $5,000 scholarships to defray the cost of collegelevel education.
