Most anyone who knows anything about me knows
of my love for gospel music. I suppose it started when
I listened to my dad, Leonard Lawson, singing in an a
cappella quartet. He sang for years with Willis Byrd,
Kate Trent, and Arley Stapleton as the Clinch River
Quartet. They sang in and around Sneedville, in
Hancock County, TN. They weren’t a professional
touring group. They just loved to sing and believed
in what they sang about. They sang at church
appointments, revivals, funerals, and an occasional
radio program with a preacher on Sundays. The good
thing for me was that by listening and watching them
when they practiced, I learned to sing all of the
harmony parts.
My love for a cappella gospel has never left me.
When I was thinking of what to do for our next
gospel CD, I remembered that a good number of
folks have been asking for more a cappella songs. I
already had a number of songs that I wanted to do
with instruments and didn’t want to give them up, so
I decided to record ten with accompaniment and ten
a cappella. There are old and new songs presented
here, and they all have something worthy to say. I
chose “Burden Bearer” as the title song because it’s
my belief that Jesus bore the burden of our sins while
on the cross and stands ever ready to lift from us any
burden of life that may come our way. I sincerely
hope these songs will touch your hearts in a
joyful way.
