VILLAGE OF UNIVERSITY PARK
DEPARTMENT DIRECTORY
The Parks and Recreation Department would like to let you know that we are very excited
about this up and coming spring/summer season. We have created this brochure with the
intent to keep the community informed of all the activities and programs we plan to implement.
As the new Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, let me say I am truly enthusiastic
about the direction in which this department is headed. We have a great staff that is totally
committed to this village and its residents. We have numerous new initiatives that we plan to
introduce over the next several months, along with some enhancements to our current
programs. Our staff and volunteers are eager to begin working for and serving the community.
However, we do realize that we can only be as successful as the people who participate in and
with our programs… Therefore, we ask that you all come out and get involved.
Please stop by Riegel Farm and get to know us, so we can get to know you and be of better
service to you.
Respectfully,
Robert O. Graham II
Director of Parks and Recreation

increase the number of volunteers while
enhancing all of our programs.

3. Excitement- A youth may join a gang because it looks exciting. After a while, the violence and bloodshed become a normal
part of life and no longer seem exciting. This leads to increased violence to obtain the same level of excitement. Although
violence is a part of gang life, much of gang activity is socializing to relieve boredom.
4. Physical Protection- A youth may join a gang for physical protection from other gangs. Statistics show that 16 percent of
gang members join because of fear. For some children, joining is a form of protection. Along with others in their
neighborhood, these youth feel if they don’t join, they will be a target of violence.
5. Peer Pressure- Some youth join gangs because their friends are gang members. They need acceptance of their peers.
Children who lack parental guidance and support often join gangs to get the attention and the support missing at home.
6. Financial Gain- Another reason youth join gangs is to acquire money. The unemployed rate for teens sometimes reaches
25 percent. Many youth join because they are unable to obtain jobs. These youth normally come from low-income
neighborhoods with few jobs. Many gang members do not believe they have the ability to achieve in school. They feel
they have no employment opportunities or marketable skills.
3. Develop good communication with your child. Good communication is open, frequent, and takes a positive tone. It allows your child to come to
you and to discuss any topic or problem. It does not condemn or put down. Good communication allows you to tell your child you love them.
4. Spend time with your child. Plan activities that the whole family can enjoy. Spend time alone with your child. Expose them to different places
outside of your neighborhood, such as parks, museums, the beach, the mountains, or camping trips. Give them attention.
5. Learn about gang and drug activity in your community. Your local police or the resource officers from school with specific information is another
way to connect.
6. Do not buy or allow your child to dress in gang style clothing. If your child dresses in gang style clothing, they are expressing an interest in gangs
and will attract the attention of gangs.
7. Set limits for your child. At an early age, children need to know the difference between acceptable and unacceptable behavior.
8. Do not allow your child to stay out late or be unsupervised.
9. Do not allow your child to write or practice writing gang names, symbols, or any other gang graffiti on their papers, books, clothes, bodies, walls
or any other place.
10. Participate in the education of your child. Visit your child’s school, meet teachers, and attend parent/school meetings.
11. Participate in the community. Know your neighbors. Organize or join watch groups, such as a neighborhood watch program. Immediately remove
graffiti from around your home. Attend community functions.
12. Develop an anti-gang environment in your home. Express your disapproval of any gang activity and of any family member joining a gang.
13. Be a good example. Become an active, not passive, parent.

2. Family Problems- A youth may join a gang due to problems they have talking with parents or guardians. Lack of
supervision or an abusive relationship can also be contributing factors. Normally, youth who become gang members are
looking for a parent or role model. It is very unfortunate, but gang membership brings about a negative role problem.
Statistics show that 62 percent of youth ages 5-17 believe individuals join gangs to satisfy the need for belonging. The
gang will satisfy a void in their lives. It provides a sense of identity, belonging, power, and protection. The gang can
become his surrogate family.
2. Keep your child busy. Give them responsibilities at home. Get them in after school sports, city recreation, or church activities.
&
1. Family Tradition- A youth may join because other family members are involved in gangs.
1. Discourage your children from hanging around with gang members. Meet your child’s friends. Find out who they are, what influence they
have, and how they and your child spend their free time.

In addition to teaching your child not to swallow water when swimming or playing in the water you can
help keep your child and everyone else healthy in the water if you:

•
Keep your child out of the water when he has diarrhea, pink eye, Hepatitis A, or other contagious diseases.
Don’t let your child in the water if he has an open wound, since it could become infected.
Don’t let your child in the water if he has a draining wound
Don’t share pool or beach towels.
Encourage your child to take a shower or bath before and after swimming.
Encourage your child to wash his hands after using the bathroom, especially if he is going to get back in the water.
Take younger children to the bathroom frequently so that they are less likely to have accidents in the water.
Keep in mind that swim diapers and swim pants are not leak-proof and may seep germs into the water. So check and change
them frequently for your infants and toddlers who aren’t yet potty trained.
• Don’t change diapers by the pool. Instead, take your child to the bathroom to change his diaper and then wash your child’s
bottom well and wash your hands too.
• Cover molluscum lesions with a watertight bandage.

One danger when swimming is that the water can be contaminated with germs. Doesn’t chlorine kill all of the germs in the
water? Chlorine does kill most of the germs, but it can take up to an hour for the chlorine in a properly maintained pool to work.

HEALTHY SWIMMING
When thinking about protecting their kids while swimming, most parents think about using life jackets, swimming lessons and
childproofing their pool. Many overlook the fact that kids can get sick from the germs in the water of pools, lakes, and water
parks. Taking some simple steps can help keep your kids, and everyone else, safe while swimming.
