Garaga Adds
Two New Garage Door Models
QUEBEC - To complement the modern and contemporary
designs seen on many new houses or even for more
traditional styles, Garaga is adding two new garage door
model patterns to its range of garage doors, the Vog and
Prestige models.
The Vog and Prestige designs were developed to
coordinate with Novatech’s entry door models.
The Vog model has horizontal, V-shaped lines,
40 inches long embossed on each section, giving a
contemporary look to the garage door. It is well-suited
for both modern and contemporary style houses.
The Prestige model is composed of refined,
rectangular embossed patterns (40.5" x 15") with contours

more traditional architectural styles.
Maxime Gendreau, Director of Marketing at
Garaga notes, “Consulting with consumers and our
network of dealers uncovered that homeowners are
increasingly looking to perfectly coordinate the design
of their entry door with that of their garage door. The
trend is the same for the windows that can be added to
the garage door and the main entry door.”
Gendreau adds, “These two new embossed doors are available for

LAST MONTH'S CASE & ANSWER
Case 25-2:
Case 25-2 ANSWER:
This is an interesting case because it presents
Watching the Competition Too Closely
When Bill was offered the opportunity to take over the daily
operations of GDN Doors from the company’s founder, he was eager to
accept the challenge. Part of Bill’s interest in the position was the fact that
the company had a 40 year history in the region. He felt that he could help
GDN Doors tap into some of the potential that comes with that history.
GDN Doors always made most of their money on commercial
installations and parking facilities, but it quickly became clear that the
owner of the business cared more about the residential side. He loved the
sales volume that it provided. It was also the point of major competition
with a rival door company that was really disliked by GDN Doors’ owner.
And so, Bill wanted to focus on the profit centers of commercial
and parking work, but he was required to spend considerable time and
effort on the much less profitable residential sales side. In general, Bill
was willing to accept this part of the job, but a recent ad campaign by
the rival company has brought the issue to a head. The rival has started
running ads in the local daily newspaper and on two of the local radio
stations. Their tagline “The best garage door company in town” has really
frustrated Bill’s boss.
While Bill is ready to ignore the campaign so that he can
concentrate on the more profitable product lines, he knows that he will be
asked to address the current issue.
How does he follow his view of the company while answering the
calls of the owner?
a problem with
multiple dimensions.
First, Bill has to deal with the immediate issue at hand – responding
to his boss’s concerns over a competitor’s actions -- while maintaining a
focus on his own priorities. Bill finds this frustrating because he sees the
residential competitor as a distraction that is not impacting GDN Doors’
core business. The reality, however, is that we often have to follow direction
from a supervisor, even if we don’t necessarily agree. And it is entirely
possible that Bill is mistakenly brushing aside the residential competition.
So, for example, it is possible that Bill’s boss knows that it is useful to keep
competitive pressure high in the residential sector so that the competitor
has less opportunity to focus on the commercial/industrial work that GDN
Doors finds more profitable.
This case also highlights a longer term issue. It is important that Bill
find a way to bring the ideas of his boss and himself closer together. This can
be done by working to understand his boss’s priorities. It can also be done
by explaining and demonstrating the benefits of Bill’s way of thinking. It is
important to remember that most people do not dramatically change their
line of thinking overnight. Usually, it is best to try for incremental change.
The key for Bill, therefore, is to work through these situations
trying to demonstrate that he is willing to listen to the thoughts of the
company owner. At the same time, he needs to demonstrate that his own
line of thinking has value, and is based on Bill’s own experience. It is,
realistically, this experience that made Bill the logical person to place in
this position.
Case 25-3: A Prospective Customer
As General Manager of
GDN Doors, Bill was responsible
for all aspects of the company’s
operations. As a former installer,
he had spent his early years in
management with the company
focused on service and product
quality,
technician
training,
inventory controls and scheduling.
Once he was comfortable with
that side of the business, he threw
himself into the sales and marketing
side.
While he had no formal
training in sales and marketing,
his technical understanding of
the industry, coupled with a hard
work ethic and likable personality
brought success. His goal in these
sales efforts was not to personally
take over the sales function, but to
understand it enough to be able to
direct the next stage of growth for
GDN Doors.
Bill periodically worked in
the showroom and at home shows
to understand the residential side
of the business. To get a handle on
the commercial side of the door
business, Bill started working with
one existing customer. He also
spent the last four months going
after a major service contract with
a distribution and warehousing
company that GDN Doors had
never dealt with. It was a long and
detailed process that was coming
closer to success when Bill received
the news today that his key contact
at the company had abruptly left the
company.
Bill was worried that all of
the informal discussions they had
had, and the negotiations were now
wasted. Does he need to start the
whole process over again?

Overhead Door Earns ICC Evaluation Service
Listing on StormTite Rolling Steel Garage Door
TEXAS - Overhead Door
Corporation’s StormTite Model
625 Rolling Steel Door has earned
the highest quality of product
review through certification by
the ICC Evaluation Service (ICCES).
The
ICC-ES
listing
provides assurance that the
StormTite Model 625 meets the
International Energy Conservation
Code (IECC) consensus standards
for air infiltration through test
reports, calculations, examination
of product information and
quality control methods.
“Our StormTite Model
625 was designed for thermal
protection,” said Jennifer Malcuit,
rolling steel product manager for
Overhead Door. “Attaining this
recognition is exciting for us,
but also great news for architects
looking for products that meet the
requirements listed on the ICCES website.”
ICC-ES President Shahin
Moinian explains why ICC-ES
Building Product Listings are so
important. “Overhead Door can
now reference the building product
listing to ensure building officials
and the building industry that the
product meets the requirements of
consensus standards referenced in
the I-Codes,” Moinian said.
The company notes that
building departments have a
long history of using evaluation
reports and can rely on the ICCES listing of StormTite Model
625 as a basis for using and
approving this rolling steel door
in construction projects requiring
the 2012 or 2015 IECC code on

NORTH CAROLINA - Entrematic has introduced an architect microsite for
Amarr commercial products called architects.amarr.com. The site is intended
in large part to introduce and inform architects to Amarr commercial products,
Amarr sustainability and Amarr products in LEED case studies.

Canadian Housing
Starts Trend Lower in
January
ONTARIO - The trend measure of housing starts in Canada was
199,169 units in January compared to 203,304 in December,
according to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
The trend is a six-month moving average of the monthly seasonally
adjusted annual rates (SAAR) of housing starts.
“Housing starts trended down across the country with the
exception of Ontario,” said Bob Dugan, CMHC Chief Economist.
“The overall decline is mostly attributable to a slowdown in the
Prairies where the housing starts trend was at a 4-year low in
January. The slowdown in new housing activity coincides with an
unemployment rate that is at a 5-year high in Alberta.”
CMHC uses the trend measure as a complement to the
monthly SAAR of housing starts to account for considerable
swings in monthly estimates and obtain a more complete picture of
the state of Canada’s housing market. In some situations analyzing
only SAAR data can be misleading, as they are largely driven by
the multi-unit segment of the market which can vary significantly
from one month to the next.
The standalone monthly SAAR was 165,861 units in

FEBRUARY
Attending the IDA Expo
LAS VEGAS – This April, garage
door dealers and technicians will
converge in Las Vegas for the
2016 IDA Expo. Attending the
Expo is an investment of time and
money, so it is important to think
about what you want to achieve
at the convention. Ideally, this
includes time on the exhibit floor,
in educational workshops and
networking.
The Exhibit Floor
At this year’s IDA Expo in
Las Vegas, there will be 11 hours
available to walk the exhibit floor
and interact with approximately
130 exhibitors. It is a good idea to
use the annual door trade shows
to visit current suppliers. This
allows meeting key people, seeing
new products and discussing
concerns in an informal manner.
Dealers should also visit the
booths of manufacturers and
distributors that they are not
currently
purchasing
from.
This further develops product
knowledge and has the potential
to lay the ground work for future
purchases. Seeing products and
revenue options beyond current
sales provides seeds for future
growth ideas.
Educational Workshops
In addition to the exhibits,
there are a couple of dozen
workshops
and
educational
opportunities at the IDA Expo.
For managers, workshop topics
include
sales,
marketing,
workplace safety and dealing
with the competition. Technicians
and managers can benefit from
technical workshops on topics
such as UL updates, commercial
operators and dock levelers.
These workshops are
generally interactive. This means
that you can ask questions, or
quietly sit back and benefit from
the questions that others ask.
Networking
The IDA Expo is also a
great opportunity to network
with dealers from across North
America and around the world.
While networking opportunities
exist on the exhibition floor, less
formal opportunities also exist.
The Expo also includes three
optional events: a motorcycle
ride through Red Rock Canyon,
the Expo Golf Tournament
and the President's Awards
Banquet. Each of these provides
the opportunity for interaction
between dealers, distributors and
manufacturers.
CANADIAN HOUSING (Cont'd)
January, down from 172,533
units in December. The SAAR of
urban starts decreased by 3.0 per
cent in January to 153,701 units.
Multiple urban starts decreased
by 5.3 per cent to 95,406 units in
January and the single-detached
urban starts increased by 1.0 per
cent to 58,295 units.
In January, the seasonally
adjusted annual rate of urban
starts decreased in Québec, the
Prairies and British Columbia, but
increased in Ontario and Atlantic
Canada.
Rural starts were estimated
at a seasonally adjusted annual
rate of 12,160 units.

Understanding How Homeowners
Make Major Purchase Decisions
By Dave Bussière
I
t is important for business people to
understand how their potential customers go
about making a purchase decision. It allows
a company to adjust their product offering to
respond to that decision process. This column
highlights the consumer decision making
process and how garage door companies can
influence that process to enhance sales.
It is generally understood that consumers go through a series of stages for major purchase decisions. Most frequently referred to
as the Consumer Decision Making Process, it
provides a framework for understanding how a
homeowner progresses towards a potential purchase.
Problem or Opportunity Recognition
Homeowners will often recognize that
they need a garage door system because of their

personal experience with that door. So, for example, the garage door opener is failing. Or the
garage door has too many dents on a steel door,
or small holes for a wooden door. Or maybe the
homeowners realize that the door aesthetics are
reducing the value of their home.
They can also realize that they want to
replace their garage door opener because they
read articles and ads about new features in
openers such as web and smart phone access
and safety features. On the garage door side,
ads and websites can convince homeowners
that an investment in a new garage door or the
addition of windows will enhance the house
value, insulation quality and pride in the aesthetics of the house. Advertising and participation at home shows can help teach people that
the look and functional features of the garage
door matter.
Data Collection and Evaluation
Once homeowners decide that they need
or want to buy a new garage door or opener,
they look for information about alternatives.
Typically this includes web searches for information about purchase options and things to
avoid. It usually includes visits to door companies and home improvement stores. Often,
homeowners also turn to neighbors and relatives to learn from their experiences.
Typically, this data collection stage
includes a search for product specifications,
pricing, installation information, warranty
information etc. Homeowners want to understand what options they have. Because the
purchase of a garage door or opener is an infrequent event, most homeowners will treat
the purchase as a new experience – it will be a
brand new product search.
A door company can influence this
process in several ways.
First, it can make detailed information
available on their website. This can be done
directly through their own website content
or through links to manufacturers’ sites. The
website can also include information on the
door dealer’s installation and service record.
This enhances the manufacturer warranty
data. Pricing data will also help. It is understandable that companies are hesitant to put
firm pricing online, but for infrequent purchases, a consumer may want to know an approximate price range, so as to understand the
overall commitment they are looking at.
Second, a door dealer can influence the
type of data that is being collected. So, for example, it is entirely fair for a door company
in northern areas to stress the importance of
insulation and weather-stripping. This would
lead the homeowner to ask similar informaContinued Page 28

Former Commander of the USS Benfold, and author of It’s Your Ship
Mike Abrashoff is at the center of one of the most remarkable
modern day stories of organizational transformation. At the age of
36, the Navy selected Mike to become Commander of USS Benfold.
At the time he was the most junior commanding officer in the Pacific
Fleet – on a ship that was plagued by low morale, high turnover
and abysmal performance evaluations. Few thought
that the ship could improve - yet 12 months later the
ship was ranked #1 in performance – using the same
crew. People were amazed and the lesson was clear
– leadership matters and culture is everything.

IDEA Two-Day Technical Schools
Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28, 2016
After a successful launch in 2013 of a two-day school for experienced technicians, IDEA is once again offering them for the 2016
IDAExpo, running two concurrent schools on Wednesday and Thursday, April 27-28, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The two-day Rolling Steel/Rolling Steel Fire Door course will be presented along with a two-day school on Commercial
Sectional Doors, run at the same time.
The classes are intended for experienced technicians and are not hands-on training courses.
Although attendees are not required to be enrolled in IDEA certification programs, the schools are ideal as pre-examination
classes, and testing for related IDEA certification designations will be offered at the conclusion of the second day.
The exams offered for attendees who wish to earn certification at the conclusion of their selected school, are: Commercial Sectional
Door Systems Technician Certification, Commercial Rolling Door Systems Technician Certification and Rolling Steel Fire
Door Technician Certification.
Important Notes:
• To register for either of the twoday schools, use the IDAExpo
Registration Form, whether or
not you intend to sit for one or
more certification exams at the
conclusion of the school.
• To attend either of the schools
and also sit for one or more
certification exams, you must
apply for the certification
program(s) through IDEA. Visit
www.dooreducation.com, and
apply normally. Indicate on the
IDEA Certification application
form that you intend to take your
exam at the “Two Day School.”
• Individuals will be permitted to
take only the exam related to
their chosen school. IDEA staff
will notify all school attendees of
the time and location of postExposition testing availability.
• Fully registered Expo attendees
may attend all or any portion of
either two-day school, as with any
other educational programming
taking place at the event.
However, testing is not available
to anyone who has not applied
for the certification examination in
advance of testing.
• Individuals will be permitted to
apply for certification on-site,
but full payment is required
before being allowed to sit for an
examination.

NORTH CAROLINA - Entrematic
recently opened its 80th local

the company refers to as a “Door

located in Rogers, Arkansas (near
Springdale).
“The opening of our 80th
Door Center in Springdale is a
milestone for our company and
comes on the heels of the opening
of a Door Center in Des Moines
earlier this year. The openings
are part of our strategic plan to
serve the growing demand for
residential and commercial doors
in the Midwest market,” Corey
Layman, Entrematic senior director
of operations said. “And we’re not
finished yet. We plan to open two
additional Door Centers in other
parts of the Midwest later this
year.”
“As with all of our Door
Centers, the new Springdale Door
Center will provide outstanding
service for door dealers in the
region,” he added. “Our ability
to provide local support to door
dealers, in turn, enhances their
ability to serve customers in the
region. That’s a win for everybody.”

Retirement Marks End of an Era
MISSOURI - Delden Garage Doors said goodbye to long-time employee
Dave Morino, simultaneously marking the end of an era in the garage
door industry. Morino retires after four decades of impeccable skill and
customer service.
Morino was the go-to guy in the Midwest when it came to repairing
electronic boards for garage door lift systems. He was well known and
respected within the garage door industry.
In 2014, Morino gave his one-year notice of retirement after
experiencing health issues. His retirement went into effect at the end of
December 2015.
“We offered his service to customers as a courtesy. Having
someone with Dave’s knowledge provided virtually exclusive value to our
company,” said Denise Dahms, President of Delden Manufacturing Co.
“He was an important component of our service.”

Amarr Introduces
New Colors to
Collections
NORTH CAROLINA - The Amarr Lincoln LI3000 and Hillcrest HI3000
insulated residential garage doors are now available in two new solid
colors: almond and terratone plus three dual directional woodgrain colors:
golden oak, walnut,
and mahogany.
The
color
additions to LI300
and HI300 mean that
both the Lincoln and
Hillcrest collections,
single-, double-, and
triple-layer, will be
available in a total of
nine popular colors.
“The addition of the five new colors to the Lincoln LI3000 and
Hillcrest HI3000 match the colors offered in the Lincoln LI1000/LI2000
and Hillcrest HI1000/HI2000 single- and double-layer constructions
introduced last year,” said Entrematic vice president of marketing Vickie

MARKETING (Cont'd)
tion from other potential suppliers.
Finally, a company can
educate a consumer on what to
avoid. Generally, it is best if this
is kept as factual and non-promotional as possible. So, if you are
the only door company in town
that sells pink doors, you will look
biased if you try to tell the homeowner that their supplier needs to
sell pink doors. It's fine, however,
if you stress that your company
has 24 hour service and that you
believe that round-the-clock service is important.
Post Decision
Assume that the product,
installation, warranty and pricing
information are so strong that you
get the sale. That is a step to success, but does not complete the
full process. Post-purchase satisfaction is as important as any step
in the process.
The door, opener and accessories are ordered. Do they ar-
rive on time?
The installation is complete. Was the interaction between
the homeowner and the installation team positive? Was the work
area cleaned afterwards? Were the
homeowners shown how the full
system worked?
These may seem separate
from the purchase decision, but
the final stage of the consumer decision making process is how consumers talk about the purchase after its completion. Word-of-mouth
is a powerful tool – and it can be
positive or negative.
Conclusion
For major, infrequent purchases like buying a garage door
and/or garage door opener, homeowners will generally dedicate
substantial time and effort in making a purchase decision. A company that understands the stages that
the homeowner goes through can
influence those stages and increase
sales.

QUESTION 1:
I have a garage door opener and
apparently I need to adjust the
door open force control.
I see a reference that this
potentiometer may be on the
unit's control board.
My question is how do I
get to the control board? I think
I may need to remove the outer
cover of the unit - any hints on
that to avoid removing too many
screws or the wrong screws?
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1:
If there isn't an explicit access
hole for this purpose, usually you
can just pull the metal/plastic
cover off of the opener (so you
can actually see the mechanism
as it is in operation). The screws
are usually fairly obvious along
the edge of the case.
Often, the adjustment
actually has a (crude) "knob"
-- little more than a plastic
shaft -- that pokes out of a hole,
somewhere. (Of course, be careful
where you have your hands while
the unit is plugged in; you'd be
annoyed if your wife pulled up
the driveway while your hands
were inside and commanded the
opener!)
Keep one of the remotes
in your pocket so you can test
the setting while still on the
ladder. You'll quickly grow tired
of climbing down, walking over
to the wall mounted pushbutton,
then climbing back up, etc.
If the opener does not also
have a limit switch (often inside
the mechanism) to determine
"full up" (and/or "full down"),
it could rely on that circuitry to
stop the opener at its end of travel
-- not just when it encounters an
obstruction, etc.
So, be sure you verify
complete correct operation for
the entire open and close actions;
be ready with your hand on the
power cord (most just plug into

MARCH 2016
THIS MONTH'S QUESTIONS
QUESTION 1: Accessing board to adjust down force
QUESTION 2: Remote won't work
an outlet in the ceiling) as an
"emergency stop."
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 2:
If you drop the bulb cover (white
plastic), you may see how to drop
the power head cover. It could be
just a snap-in type with minimal
screws.
QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3:
I'd be essentially 100% certain it
(and the limit switch adjustments)
will be accessible without
removing the cover. Look for
access holes with a shaft or as
another said even an external shaft.
If no printed markings, certainly
would expect an indicator like
an arrow of differing width
indicating higher/lower force or
the like.
QUESTION 2:
My garage door opener works
with the wired door button, but
I have two remotes with good
batteries that won't program. It's
seven years old. Suggestions?
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 1:
Did the remotes ever work? There
are a couple of different protocols.
QUESTION 2, RESPONSE:
Yes, but over the last six or so
months the primary became
intermittent. I've never used the
other one.
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 2:
Presumably, you have just one
door? i.e. don't have a second
opener on which you can test the
remote?
Is it a remote that handles
three doors? If so, have you tried
programming buttons other than
the "first"? i.e. in case the actual
"button" has worn out?
Are you getting any tactile
feedback from the button? i.e.
does it have the same "click" and
"feel" as the others?
Have you tried erasing all
the codes from the opener? i.e. is
the problem in the remote or in
the opener?
Does the opener do
anything when you attempt the
programming sequence? i.e. does
it "see" that you've activated the
remote (even if it is rejecting the
programming operation)?
Is the antenna wire visible
in the opener?
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 3:
My garage door opener never
quits working. I either lift the
door up, or pull it down, and my
hands always work!
I've never had a power
door opener, but I believe they
have a switch on the motor device
to change the frequency. That's so
the neighbor's remotes don’t open
your door. Maybe that switch got
bumped and needs to be reset.
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 4:
That was old-fashioned when I
got an opener in about 1996. That
one had 12-position DIP switches
on remote and opener to set the
code. Later, they went to "rolling
codes" and the opener would learn
the remote.
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 5:
My garage door opener never
quits working either, except when
she goes to visit her mother.
QUESTION 1, RESPONSE:
No second opener. Erased all codes
and then tried the "learn" process

again with no luck. I get no light
flash or click. Antenna visible.
Tried several times moving it
around with no improvement.
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 6:
This is a long shot but my garage
door openers act very stupid when
they have CFL or LED bulbs in
them.
Maybe
try
it
with
incandescents?
QUESTION 2, ANSWER 7:
Owner’s manual will help. No
manual? Download one. Ones
with limit switches are pretty old
models. New ones are either done
with adjusting pots or by software
pushing couple switches. Even
motor is DC driven (small but
more torque). Remote also is now
spread spectrum rolling code -even syncs with your car.
QUESTION 2, RESPONSE:
I took the CFL out and replaced it
with an incandescent, solved the
problem of that light not working
properly, but didn't improve
anything else. I'm pretty much
of the opinion that something
on some circuit is broken which
probably means it's beyond my
repair expertise.
I'm thinking of going to
the big box and getting a new
universal remote to try.

SCHWEISS DOORS (Cont'd)
needed all the headroom he could
get for a sidewall door. “For this
new door, hydraulic with the selfsupporting header and new wraparound hinges was the way to go,”
he says.
The Schweiss one-piece
hydraulic door, measuring 29.1 x
14 feet, was installed in October
2015 on an existing woodframe
shed that houses two semi-trucks
and other equipment.
Schweiss doorframes are
designed with double push tubes
that are tied directly into the wraparound hinges that connect both
vertical push tubes directly to the
header tube. The company notes
that the advantage of double push
tubes is that forces of hydraulic
cylinders are evenly distributed to
the doorframe and the wrap-around
hinges.
“There have been hydraulic
doors with hinge welds that failed,
literally tearing off the doorframe
and destroying the door,” Schweiss
says. “Our design team provided a
more durable wrap-around hinge
with grease zerks that are accessible
without removing the top rubber
seal.”
Hoese
says
the
combination of durability and
simple maintenance sold him on
the hydraulic door with the easyto-grease hinge from Schweiss
Doors.
